meṭʿā dēyn ṭāʿēyn shavrē: b-ṭīmē w-saklē ḥavrayhōn.

Children truly err, led on by the foolish and senseless, their companions,

kīsēh msapeq shēdānā: w-da-ywā menēh lā ʿāqar.

his purse supplies the sorcerer, yet the demon is not uprooted from him by it.

b-haymānūtā hāw metṭardīn: shēdē w-shekhnē men nāshā.

It is by faith that demons and indwelling spirits are driven out from man,

wa-ṣlōthā w-ṣāwmā rādēp: rūḥā ṭanptā aykh da-khthīv.

and prayer and fasting pursue the unclean spirit, as it is written.

lā tāwbedh shavrā māʿaykh: d-lā nāpaq da-ywā menākh.

Destroy not the child within your inward parts, lest the demon not go out from you.

ṣūm ṣalā w-āwdā w-haymen: d-lā mqāwe rūḥā l-wāthākh.

Fast, pray, confess and believe, that the spirit may not remain with you.

lā teghhan bēyth ḥarāshē: w-lā teṭʿe ba-spar ṭūlqē.

Do not incline toward the house of sorcerers, and do not go astray by the book of enchanters,

l-b-ōkh gāwsā ba-shmā rabā: w-maḥlem lākh ba-d-mēh ḥayā.

take refuge in the great Name, and he will heal you with his living blood,

da-mhaymen kul hāwē lēh: wa-d-vāʿē sagī meshkaḥ.

for whoever believes, all things become his, and whoever seeks finds much.

pthīḥū tarʿēh d-ḥanānā: l-aynā d-qārē ba-ṭnānā.

Open is the door of mercy to whoever calls upon it with fervor.

ʿalʿālēh d-zēpā qeṭrat: ʿal kul rēsh ʿaprā zelḥat.

the whirlwind of falsehood has raged; upon every head of dust it has poured out,

rūḥā da-ḥṭīthā nepqat: wa-b-qeṭmā l-khlnāsh ṭemrate.

the wind of sin has gone forth, and in ashes it has buried every man.

ba-ʿrōrā arʿā selqat: wa-l-ʿal men kul ethpashṭat.

In tumult the earth has risen up, and above all things it has spread itself out,

w-hā ṭmīrīn bāh wa-ḥnīqīn: b-ṣpthāh klhōn ʿāmōrēyh.

and behold, buried in it and choked, in its grief, are all its inhabitants.

aykā eṭshe men ʿāūlā: d-men kul d-ūk hā ḥābṣ lī.

Where shall I hide from injustice, for from every place, behold, it presses upon me?

Où me cacherai-je de l'injustice, car de tout lieu, voici, elle me presse ?

l-aykā ezal men nekhlā: da-l-kul d-epne pāgaʿ bī.

Where shall I go from deceit, for wherever I turn, it meets me?

Où irai-je loin de la fourberie, car partout où je me tourne, elle me rencontre ?

l-yamā neḥtath hāw arʿanī: l-yavshā selqēth eshkaḥtēh.

I went down to the sea — it met me there; I came up to dry land — I found it there,

l-ḥūrbā nepqath lā aghhīth: da-ḥṭāhē mlēyn ba-b-rītā.

I went out to the wilderness, I did not escape: sins fill all creation.

aykh sāwqā b-khlnāsh ḥālēdh: w-aynā d-ḥaī menēh sāq.

Like a fading thing it wastes away upon every man, and whoever lives is worn down by it,

en nāsh mīth lēh ezdadaq: w-thūv men ʿāūlā lā sāaq.

if a man dies, he is set free, and no longer is he worn away by injustice.

napshātā b-sāwqā ḥāyn: w-ʿam sāwqā b-ʿāūlā ḥlyṭān.

Souls live amid this wasting away, and with it they are mixed with injustice,

mīth ba-rnāshā ethḥarar: men sāwqā āp men rūshʿā.

when man dies, he is set free from this wasting away, and also from wickedness.

men ʿāūlan āp men rūshʿan: ʿāṣōbē hwāw dāʿōrē.

From our injustice and from our wickedness, helpers have become those who bind up wounds,

w-āsāwtā d-ʿūdhrānē: hā maqnēyn lan swgāpānē.

and the remedies meant for our help, behold, now bring upon us harm.

b-paghrē d-nāshā hā meshtʿēyn: aykh da-b-mānē d-lā ḥashḥū.

With the bodies of men, behold, they make sport, as with vessels of no use,

b-besyānhōn wa-b-nekhlayhōn: ʿābadīn mūmē b-sagyēē.

with their contempt and with their deceits, they inflict blemishes upon many.

āsyā d-sāʿar wālīthā: bar gabā d-nūhrā ʾītāwhī.

The physician who does what is fitting is a son of the side of light,

w-ʿam ḥeshōkhā methkatash: da-b-vāvātā lā neshrē.

and he struggles with darkness, that enmities may not settle in.

āsyā mhīrā ba-shyāpē: rādhp ḥeshkā men ʿaynē.

The skilled physician, with salves, drives darkness from the eyes,

wa-b-zāwʿā w-ḥashā ʾīthāwhī: d-b-īrath nūhrā lā teḥshakh.

and he is caught up in trembling and pain, that the pupil of light may not go dark.

yaʿnā dēyn ba-nkhīlūtēh: mʿadrānā l-ḥeshkā hāwē.

But the ostrich, in its cunning, becomes a helper to darkness,

wa-shyāpā krīhā mqarev: d-nerdāōp nūhrā men ʿaynā.

and it offers a harmful salve, to drive light away from the eye,

w-bar ḥaylā d-ḥeshkā ʾīthāwhī: āsyā d-khḥal b-īshāīth.

and it is a son of the power of darkness — the physician who anoints wickedly,

d-nedhḥōq nūhrā men ʿaynā: w-neʿōl ḥeshkā w-naqen bāh.

that it might drive light from the eye, and darkness enter and nest within it.

men ʿāūlā l-kul d-ūkh ʿerqath: wa-b-kul d-w-kā peghʿēth bēh.

From injustice I fled to every place, and in every place I met it,

men yamā w-yavshā seʿṭth: d-etev w-ba-qnōmī ethbaqe.

from sea and from dry land I turned away, that I might sit and examine my own self,

w-kad manʿēth da-b-napshī ēḥūr: w-ethbaya men kul da-ḥzēyth.

and when I came to look within my soul, I was astonished at all that I saw,

wa-shlaḥtāh l-khlāh tēbēyl: d-la-l-mēnā da-qnōmī esmōkh.

and I stripped off all the world, so that I might rest at the harbor of my own self.

ḥzēyth bī d-mūtā da-shrārā: w-eskēmā d-dāmē l-qūshtā.

I saw in myself the likeness of truth, and a form that resembled honesty,

But my mind was judging me, and quietly it was saying to me:

Mais mon esprit me jugeait, et doucement il me disait :

reʿyānī b-apaī lā nāsēv: ṣevyānī bātarī lā ʿānē.

My mind shows no partiality toward me; my will does not side with me,

in his judgments he resembles God, who shows no partiality toward his own self.

l-waī ba-b-rīthā pāhē (h)wēyth: d-lā sagīīn sūrḥānaī.

Would that I had gone astray only in the created world, that my sins were not so many,

w-lā mā da-pnēyth ṣydh āwānī: pūshāḥā rabā npal lī.

ḥzēyt da-mḥalaṣ qenyānēh: wa-thrīʿ wa-shdē benyānēh.

I saw that its possessions were stripped away, and its structure breached and thrown down,

stripped was the soul of its glory, and stolen was the holy treasure.

Thieves stripped it and had their fill, and just as they wished, so they plundered me,

anīdhūhī l-ʾīlān paghrā: w-atarw pērāwhī men sāwkāwhī.

they shook the tree of the body, and knocked its fruits from its branches,

ntar men ʿaynā kūḥādā: w-ghūmdā ḥlāpāwhī āwʿī bāh.

sharpness of sight fell from the eye, and a film grew in it instead,

ntar qūshtā men leshānā: w-īʿat bēh da-gālūtā.

truth fell away from the tongue, and falsehood was fixed within it,
