tayāvā d-ḥadī l-ʿīrē: the lī mnātā b-ḥūlṭānēh.

The penitent, who gladdens the Watchers, let there be for me a share in his company.

w-ʿam kul d-ettwī ʿal napshēh: tashwēynī d-eḥze teshbōḥthākh.

And with all who have repented for their own souls, make me worthy to see your glory.

d-ʿal ʿatīrā w-lāʿāzar.

On the rich man and Lazarus.

Sur le riche et Lazare.

ʾw meskēnā wa-ṣrīkhā: ḥamsen bāh b-meskēnūtākh.

O poor and needy one, endure with patience in your poverty,

w-lā nethraʿam reʿyānākh: ʿal alāhā bārōyākh.

and let not your mind grumble against God your creator.

etdamā l-hāw lāʿāzar: makhvā āp ḥādhōrā.

Liken yourself to that Lazarus, the afflicted, the one covered with sores,

d-meskēnūthā w-marʿūtā: krīkhān (h)waī lēh tartayhēyn.

for poverty and sickness both were wrapped around him,

d-saybar qalīl ʾūlṣānā: b-ʿūbēh ettnīḥ d-avrāhām.

who, having borne brief affliction, found rest in the bosom of Abraham,

wa-d-varekh (h)wā l-alāhā: ʿal wa-shrā b-gāw pardaysā.

and who had blessed God, entered and dwelt in paradise.

ḥūr bēh b-hānā lāʿāzar: ʿal tarʿēh d-hāw ʿatīrā.

Look at this Lazarus, at the gate of that rich man,

d-methyaav (h)wā l-partūtē: d-nātarīn (h)wāw men pāthōrēh.

who longed for the crumbs that fell from his table.

kalbē mlaḥkhīn (h)wāw shūḥnāwhī: w-hāw mwdē (h)wā l-alāhā.

Dogs licked his sores, and he gave thanks to God,

d-āp en hāw kpen wa-mṭarap: l-kalbē tehwe savʿūtā.

for even though he himself was hungry and tormented, it was the dogs who had their fill.

hākanā gēyr āgar (h)wā: hāw lāʿāzar naṣīḥā.

For thus indeed was that renowned Lazarus rewarded,

d-ṭāv hāw hānā kūrhānā: d-menēh nābaʿ ḥūlmānā.

for good was this sickness, from which health springs forth.

myatar lī hān ʾūlṣānā: da-khse b-ghāwēh b-w-sāmā.

Better for me is this affliction, in which delight lies hidden,

ṭāv lēh l-paghrā d-nethqapaḥ: wa-l-napshā d-teḥash qalīl.

better for the body to be afflicted, and for the soul to suffer a little,

bī neshtabaḥ alāhā: w-ehwe ṭūpsā la-ṣrīkē.

in me let God be glorified, and let me become an example to the needy,

da-b-khūrhānē w-ʾūlṣānē: nehwōn ʿāhdīn mūlkānē.

that in sicknesses and afflictions they may keep remembering the promises.

elū gēyr yāhēv (h)wā lī: hān ʿatīrā men ṭūbēh.

For if this rich man had given me from his abundance,

ḥāwbath kalbāwhī pāraʿ (h)wā: d-tarsīth enōn men shūḥnaī.

he would have paid the debt of his dogs, whom I nourished from my own sores.

sagī gēyr bāsar nā lēh: da-khmā pathyā yaʿnūtēh.

Greatly indeed do I scorn him, for how vast was his stinginess,

d-ḥāar (h)wā bī da-shdē nā: aykh abīdhā ʿal tarʿēh.

who looked at me cast down like one lost at his gate,

w-lā prash (h)wā da-nshadar lī: āpen qalīl tūrsāyā.

and did not resolve to send me even a little nourishment.

enā dēyn mā da-ḥzēytēh: mḥēyth enēyn apaī b-arʿā.

But I, when I saw him, struck my face to the ground,

d-lā nasbar lēh ʿālōvā: da-l-mēkhūltēh ḥāar nā.

lest that grasping man should suppose that I was gazing at his food.

aplā gēyr elū shadar: shāqēl (h)wēyth men ṭāvātēh.

For not even if he had sent, would I have taken from his goods,

da-l-mā kaī āwkel enēyn: l-ṭāvātēī da-l-wāth maḥe kul.

lest I thereby consume the good things I have stored with him who gives life to all.

lā (h)wā gēyr meṭul da-b-ʿēyth: partūtē men pāthōrēh.

For it was not because I desired crumbs from his table —

tasbar lākh ʾō shāmōʿā: da-l-pūnāqāwhī bāʿē (h)wēyth.

do not suppose, O hearer, that I sought after his delicacies.

ba-d-mūth kalbā ṣābē (h)wyth: d-eḥe b-ʿālmā ʿāvōrā.

Was I willing, like a dog, to live in this passing world?

d-ʾīth hāw ʿālmā ba-nyāḥā: wa-b-hāw bāʿēynī d-ethbasam.

For there is a world of rest, and in that world I desired to find delight.

kmā dēyn nehwe reʿyānēh: d-hāw ʿatīrā meskēnā.

How poor, then, must the mind of that rich man be,

wa-khmā nehwōn ḥūshāvāwhī: w-lebā qashyā d-ṣenʿātēh.

and how hard his thoughts, and his heart hardened by his own devices?

kmā sagī (h)wā ʿūhdānēh: wa-msharar (h)wā b-b-īshūtā.

How great was his vigilance, and how set he was in wickedness,

d-āplā meṭʿā ṭāʿē (h)wā: w-sāʿar ṣēydh nāsh ṭābāthā.

that not even by mistake did he err and do good to anyone.

ṭāv lī d-qalīl ethqapaḥ: b-ṭūrāpē wa-b-nesyōnē.

Better for me that I suffered a little, in trials and temptations,

w-ehwe ʿthīdhā wa-ḥlīṣā: qdām hāw yāwmā d-pūrʿānā.

and that I be ready and prepared before that day of recompense.

d-en āzal nā l-shūnāqā: hā mnapaq nā b-ʾūlṣānē.

For if I must go to torment, behold, I have already paid it out in afflictions,

w-enhw d-manʿēth la-nyāḥā: hā ettnīḥēth men ʿamlā.

and if I attain to rest, behold, I have already rested from labor.

lā dēyn hāwē ṭālōmā: alāhā l-kul men d-alīṣ.

God is not unjust to anyone who is afflicted,

āplā mahme ba-sīmā: men men da-ʿlāwhī tūkhlānēh.

nor does the Gracious One neglect anyone whose trust rests on him.

tābar hāw gēyr āp ʿāṣv: w-hwyū mase mā d-māḥē.

For he it is who breaks and also binds up, and he it is who heals when he strikes,

l-meskanā mqīm men ʿaprā: wa-l-vāyāshā men qeqltā.

he raises the poor from the dust, and the wretched from the dunghill.

hwyū da-mmīt āp maḥe: w-maḥeth la-shyōl āp maseq

He it is who kills and also gives life, who brings down to Sheol and also raises up —

ʿal hānā kēyth tūkhlānā: nsaybar klnāsh ʿāqāth.

in this trust, then, let everyone endure their sorrows,

w-emathī d-ātāyā mardūthā: nehwe pārēsh lēh d-ʿādhrā (h)ī.

and when chastisement comes, let each discern that it is given to help.

lā (h)wā gēyr ba-ṭālāīth: ʿābēdh hālēyn alāhā.

For not in vain does God do these things,

ʾlā d-neḥze en mqāwe: ba-rnāshā ṣydh mardūtēh.

but so that he may see whether a person perseveres under his discipline.

bāʿēynī menākh mārē kul: shadar bātarī wa-d-ba-raynī.

I beg of you, Lord of all: send after me and lead me,

da-ʿshen lēh ʿlaī ʾūlṣānā: d-napshā w-paghrā shawyāīth.

for affliction of soul and body alike has grown heavy upon me.

l-paghrā gēyr qaṭlēh kapnā: wa-l-napshā kul nesyōnīn.

For hunger has killed the body, and every trial afflicts the soul,

wa-l-ḥadh ḥadh men hdāmē: kēvā d-napshēh ālēṣ lēh.

and each single limb is pressed by the pain that is its own.

ba-rnāshā nā ḥalāshā: w-qānēṭ nā men sāṭānā.

I am a weak man, and I fear Satan:

seek me out.

cherche-moi.

da-l-mā b-ḥadh men eskēmīn: ethraʿam ʿal mardūtākh

lest in some way I grumble against your discipline,

w-āwbedh klhōn marhāṭaī: da-qnēyth enōn b-ʾūlṣānaī.

and lose all my racing, which I have gained through my afflictions,

w-ēbadar āp yūthrānaī: d-kanshēth enōn men ḥashaī.

and scatter also my gains, which I gathered from my sufferings.

aylelīw gēyr klhōn garmaī: āp hdāmaī hā qāʿēyn.

For all my bones have wailed, and my limbs, behold, are crying out,

d-ʿal aynā lam tūkhlānā: hālēyn kēbē sābēl a(n)t.

'On what trust, then, do you bear these pains?'

« En quelle confiance donc supportes-tu ces douleurs ? »

enā dēyn ḥadīth enōn: ʿal ʿūdhrānēh da-ḥnānākh.

But I gladdened them concerning the help of your compassion,

da-mraḥmān hāw alāhā: w-menshēlī dānaḥ pūrqānēh.

for God is merciful, and suddenly his salvation dawns.

ashtadarw dēyn malakē: w-ṭaʿanūhī menshēlī l-lāʿāzar.

Then angels were sent, and suddenly they carried Lazarus away,

w-āwbelīw sāmūhī ba-ghnōnā: b-ʿūbēh d-avūn avrāhām.

and led him and set him in the bridal chamber, in the bosom of our father Abraham.

ʾthḥlem men kūrhānāwhī: w-ethḥaīl men nesyōnāwhī.

He was healed of his sicknesses, and strengthened from his trials,

w-arwaḥ lēh men ʾūlṣānā: w-ethbasam men ṭūrāpāwhī.

and found relief from affliction, and took delight after his torments.

ethasīw klhōn kēvāwhī: w-ethḥatamw klhōn shūḥnāwhī.

All his pains were healed, and all his sores were sealed shut,

ethqaṭarw klhōn garmāwh: da-msharēyn (h)wāw hadāmāwhī.

all his bones, which had been loosened, were knit together,

ʿraqīw menēh klhōn ḥashāwhī: wa-praqīw menēh kul qenṭāwhī.

all his sufferings fled from him, and all his fears departed from him,

w-ethḥadath ba-d-mūth neshrā: w-ethʿalam āp ethʿashan.

and he was renewed like an eagle, made young again, and strengthened.

lāʿāzar aḥdēh tahrā: d-aykan ba-ʿgal eshtaḥlap.

Wonder seized Lazarus, at how swiftly he was transformed,

w-sharī (h)w la-mshabāḥū: l-alāhā ʿal ṭaybūtēh.

and he began to glorify God for his grace.

hākanā gēyr āmar (h)w: b-rēshā d-khlāh teshbōḥtēh.

For thus he spoke, at the head of his whole song of praise:

māwda nā lākh ḥanānā: d-shāmaʿ a(n)t la-d-qārē lākh.

'I give thanks to you, gracious One, for you hear whoever calls upon you;'

en meskēnā hāw ʿātar bākh: w-en ḥādhōrā hāw mamlekh bākh.

if he is poor, he grows rich in you; and if he is covered with sores, he reigns in you;

S'il est pauvre, il s'enrichit en toi ; et s'il est couvert de plaies, il règne en toi ;

w-enhw da-snīq mettagar: w-enhw da-ṣrīkh meshtartaḥ.

and whoever is in want grows wealthy, and whoever is needy is set at ease.

enhw da-skal ba-khyānēh: hāwē nevʿā ḥakrīmā.

Whoever is foolish by nature becomes a source of wisdom,

w-en hedyōṭā hāw methḥakam: w-hāwē mḥakem la-ḥrānē.

and if he is simple, he grows wise, and becomes one who makes others wise.

enhw da-b-ṣīr āp maslaī: b-ʿelthākh klnāsh sāgēdh lēh.

Whoever is small, even despised, on your account everyone bows to him,

w-en ʾītāwhī ḥasīr ṭōhmā: ʿamākh hāwē ʿenyānēh.

and if he lacks lineage, his company comes to be with you.

en ʾītāwhī mabūʿ mūmē: mathhar nāshā ba-ḥzātēh.

If he is a fount of blemishes, people marvel at the sight of him,

wa-b-ʿeltēh klnāsh yāhēv: teshbōḥtā l-alāhūtākh.

and on his account everyone renders glory to your Godhead.

ʿatīrā en ḥāar bākh: ʿamākh medam lā bāʿē.

If a rich man looks to you, he seeks nothing besides you,

w-en ʾīthāwhī mrē nekhsē: l-d-īlēh hāwē nūkhrāyā.

and if he owns possessions, he becomes a stranger to what is his own,

w-en ʾīth ʿabdē sagyēē: ba-d-mūth ʿavdā meshtaʿbadh.

and though he has many servants, he is enslaved like a servant,

w-aynā d-ʾīth lēh klmedam: aykh ḥādhōrā methḥashaḥ.

and he who has everything makes use of it like one covered with sores.

ṣayāmā bākh methpaṭam: w-ʿanwāyā l-wāthākh sābaʿ.

In you the faster is fattened, and in you the poor one is filled,

ʿīrē w-shāhrē āp ʿāmlē: l-wāthākh nāḥīn men rahṭā.

the watchers, the wakeful, and the laborers rest in you from their race.

enhw da-khpen sābaʿ bākh: w-enhw da-ṣhe rāwaz bākh.

Whoever is hungry is filled in you, and whoever thirsts rejoices in you,

w-enhw da-shre b-ʾūlṣānā: ʿānēyt hāw lēh klʿedān.

and whoever dwells in affliction, you answer him at every moment.

āp enā mrī da-shdē (h)wyth: aykh zevlā l-apaī arʿā.

I too, my Lord, who was cast down like dung on the face of the earth,

d-lā keprēth bākh b-ʾūlṣānaī: hā aytītānī la-nyāḥā.

because I did not deny you in my afflictions, behold, you have brought me to rest,

w-da-ḥdhīth l-w-qbal mardūthākh: ettnīḥēth ʿal pāthōrākh.

and because I rejoiced against your discipline, I have found rest at your table,

wa-d-lā ḥalpēth shūlṭānākh: sabaʿtānī men pūrqānākh.

and because I did not exchange your authority, you have filled me from your salvation,

wa-d-qablath kul ʾūlṣānīn: pelṭth men kul shūnāqīn.

and because I received every affliction, I have escaped every torment,

wa-d-reḥmēth meskēnūthā: peghʿat lāh bī malkūthā.

and because I loved poverty, the Kingdom has come to meet me.

kad shalem dēyn bāʿūtēh: hāw meskēnā da-ʿtar (h)wā.

When that poor man who had grown rich had finished his prayer,

arīm ʿaynāwhī men rūḥqā: wa-ḥzā b-nūrā l-ʿatīrā.

he lifted his eyes from afar, and saw the rich man in the fire,

w-shāmaʿ (h)wā lēh kad gāʿē: w-methḥanan (h)wā l-avrāhām.

and he heard him crying out, and beseeching Abraham,

d-shadar la-b-rākh lāʿāzar: d-narwaḥ lī men yaqdānā.

'Send your servant Lazarus, that he may give me relief from the burning.'

āmar lēh dēyn avrāhām: l-hāw ʿatīrā rashīʿā.

But Abraham said to that wicked rich man,

Mais Abraham dit à ce riche méchant,

d-paḥtā hāw rabā ba-ynātan: āp ʿūmqā d-lā mestayakh.

'A great chasm lies between us, and a depth that cannot be crossed.'

kmā dēyn nehwe bēyth ʿaynāwhī: d-hāw ʿatīrā ḥalāshā.

How feeble, then, must have been the sight of that rich man,

d-lā ethkaḥadh kad shāl: d-lāʿāzar narwaḥ (h)wā lēh.

that he did not hesitate to ask that Lazarus give him relief!

kūḥādā gēyr tākēv (h)wā: w-shūnāqā yatīr menēh.

For denial pressed upon him, and torment even more than that,

qām lēh ba-ynāth tartayhēyn: kad bālaʿ men tartayhēyn.

he stood between the two, swallowed up by both,

amsar dēyn ʿal kūḥādā: d-nethpaṣ men shūnāqā.

but he chose denial, that he might be delivered from torment,

w-shaqlāh (h)wā l-behtath apē: d-nethpalaṭ men ʾūlṣānā.

and he accepted the shame of his face, that he might escape the affliction.

lā dēyn ya(h)v lēh avrāhām: d-qabel (h)wā lēh ṭābatēh.

But Abraham did not grant it to him, for he had already received his good things,

w-aykh d-ahmī men meskēnē: bāʿūtēh lā eshtamʿat.

and just as he had neglected the poor, his own prayer was not heard.

sharī (h)wā dēyn ʿatīrā: bākē w-ālē w-mettanaḥ.

Then the rich man began weeping, wailing, and groaning,

wa-mḥareq (h)wā āp shenāwhī: b-gāw ḥeshōkhā ba-rāyā.

and gnashing his teeth also, in the outer darkness.

sharī (h)wā la-mbakāyū: napshēh meṭul ʾūlṣānēh.

He began to weep for his own soul, on account of his affliction,

w-hākanā tūv āmar (h)wā: ba-b-khāthā āp ba-ḥnaghtā.

and thus again he spoke, with weeping and with groaning:

wāylī da-ʿbarw kul ṭūvīn: w-naqpūnī hāsh kul ʾūlṣānīn.

'Woe is me, that all my joys have passed away, and now all afflictions cling to me!'

What I gained has not stayed with me, nor is it left behind after me,

da-hvā w-sēmā pāēsh lēh: w-enā ba-l-ḥōdh meshtanaq.

gold and silver remain, and I alone am tormented.

l'or et l'argent demeurent, et moi seul suis tourmenté.

Do not be, O rich men, like the one who hoarded for years,

l-ʿallāthā ʿbadh setārā: wa-shdā napshēh b-adūghā.

who built storehouses for his crops, and gave his soul over to ease,

The poverty of the prophets, and the want of the apostles —

Great indeed is poverty, exceedingly, to one who is discerning,

The poverty of the apostles is of will, and not of nature;

La pauvreté des apôtres est de volonté, et non de nature ;

the poverty of Lazarus is of nature, and not of will.

If the poor man by nature triumphed by not grumbling,

kmā nērav shūvḥēh d-aynā: da-b-ḥērūtēh methmaskan.

how much greater will be the glory of the one who makes himself poor in his freedom?

Consider Job the contender, who did not rejoice that his possessions were many,

d-apgaʿ bākh meskēnūthā: da-ṭmīrā bāh malkūtā.

who has brought poverty to meet you, in which the kingdom lies hidden.

shmayānē kul mā d-hāwēyn: w-arʿānē kmā d-ʾītayhōn.

The heavenly beings, everything they are, and the earthly ones, however many they are,

w-da-thḥēyth arʿā wa-b-kul d-ūkh: nāwdōn akh(ḥ)dhā l-alāhā.

and those beneath the earth, and everywhere, let them all give thanks together to God,

taḥtāyē ʿam ʿelāyē: paghrānē ʿam rūḥānē.

those below together with those above, the bodily with the spiritual,

meskēnē āp ʿatīrē: mītē w-ḥayē wa-d-ātēyn.

the poor together with the rich, the dead and the living and those still to come.

nēmrūn klhōn shawyāīth: b-rīkhū men kul da-ʿbadh kul.

Let them all say together: 'Blessed above all be he who made all,

da-l-meskēnē lā ṭālēm: ṭūrāpē d-ʾūlṣānayhōn.

who does not cheat the poor of the reward for their afflictions,'

w-aynā d-ṣābē da-nrakev: aykh da-l-napshēh b-w-yāā.

And whoever wishes to obtain comfort for his own soul,

teshbōq ḥāwbāwhī kēnūtā: w-tetel ḥayāwhī tyāvūtā.

let righteousness forgive his debts, and repentance grant him life,

w-neʿōl neḥdē b-hāw athrā: d-aylēyn da-shparw l-alāhā.

and let him enter and rejoice in that place kept for those who pleased God,

w-tamn nehwe b-w-yāēh: w-netṭaʿyān āp ʿāqātēh.

and there let his comfort be, and let his sorrows too be forgotten.
