qenṭēh tamān netṭalaq: āp sūrādēh nethkapar.

Let his dread there be dispelled, and his terror too be effaced.

w-nāwdē l-ṭāvā ʿal raḥmāwhī: wa-l-bar ṭāvā ʿal ḥayāwhī.

and let him give thanks to the good one for his mercy, and to the good one's son for his life.

shlem d-ʿal mraḥmānūtā w-ʿatīrā w-lāʿāzar.

Finished is the memra on mercy, the rich man, and Lazarus.

d-īlēh d-ṭūvānā mrī ʾīsḥāq

which is of the blessed Mar Isaac,

qui est du bienheureux Mar Isaac,

tā l-āsyūtā tayāvā: l-wāth āsyā d-ba-ʿgal mase.

Come, O penitent, to healing, to the physician who heals swiftly.

Viens à la guérison, ô pénitent, vers le médecin qui guérit vite ;

lāw nūghrā d-zavnā bāʿē: ṣevyānā mṭayvā shāal.

He does not ask for length of time; he asks only for a ready will.

lāw men sagī qenyānā: hāwyā zedhqāthā w-elā lā.

Not from great possessions does almsgiving come, or else it would not exist at all.

w-āplā b-nūghrā sagīā: d-ḥayē hāwyā tyvūtā.

Nor does the repentance that gives life come through a long span of time.

b-ḥadh shāmōnā ʾīth athrā: d-zedaqātā nāsh nerhaṭ bēh.

With a single small coin there is room for a man to hasten to almsgiving,

wa-b-ḥadh yāwm ʾīth pūrsā: da-thyāvūtā tshakhlel bēh.

and in a single day there is occasion to perfect repentance.

ḥāwyākh gēyr da-mraḥmānā hāw: w-āsyūtā ba-ʿgal yāhēv.

For he has shown you that he is merciful, and gives healing swiftly,

b-(h)ī d-emar lākh ba-nvī: d-yāwmānā b-qālēh teshmaʿ.

in that he told you through the prophet, that today you will hear his voice.

w-apīsākh da-b-ḥadh yāwm: maṣyā d-tehwe tayāvā.

And he has persuaded you that in a single day it is possible for you to become a penitent,

men hādē da-qrā qūdmayk: d-yāwmānā b-qālēh teshmaʿ.

from this, that he read out before you, that today you will hear his voice.

reʿyānā mṭayvā mqabel: b-zedaqātā w-ba-thyāvūtā.

A ready mind he accepts, in almsgiving and in repentance.

lā (h)wā b-kaylā d-pālaḥ nāsh: elā b-kaylā d-ṣābē nāsh.

It is not by the measure that a man labors, but by the measure that a man wills.

lāw da-khmā hāw rahṭākh ḥāar: elā da-khmā hāw ṣvyānākh.

He does not look at how great your running is, but at how great your will is.

meṭul hānā wa-l-sābē: ʾīth tyāvūtā mshamlaytā

Therefore, is there a repentance perfected also for the aged?

lā (h)wā tyāvūtā d-ʿamlē: l-sābē shapālē eshtakhḥat.

It was not a repentance of toils that was found for the feeble old,

elā tyvūtā d-hāwyā: b-ṣvyānā mṭayvā d-nāshā.

but a repentance that comes through a ready will of man.

b-hādē tyāvūtā nṣaḥ (h)wā: gayāsā ʿal rēsh qaysā.

By this repentance the thief triumphed, at the head of the cross,

aykā d-layt athrā l-ʿamlē: haymānūtā kaleltēh.

where there was no room for toils, faith crowned him.

w-lā ba-ṣrat medam hādē: d-lā ṣām nūghrā w-lā ṣalī.

Nor did it lessen anything, that he had not fasted long, nor prayed long,

d-ṣvyānā mṭayvā qarev: b-haymānūtā w-ethqabal.

for he offered a ready will in faith, and was accepted,

wa-hwā qadhmā b-tayābē: w-rēshā w-b-w-khrā d-athlēyṭē.

and he became first among penitents, and the head and firstborn of the athletes,

da-rnā mernā b-pūqdānā: w-eshtabaḥ b-haymānūtā.

[...] in the commandment, and was glorified through faith.

arbʿīn shnay ḥṭā ʿamā: b-da-b-rā w-aṭnēh ba-ptakhrē.

Forty years the people sinned in the wilderness, and provoked him to jealousy with idols,

wa-thyāvūtā d-akhrez lēh: b-ḥadh yōm alpēh d-gamar lāh.

yet the repentance he proclaimed to it, in a single day he taught it to fulfill.

b-mashmaʿthā da-b-ḥadh yāwmā: eshtāwdī lēh tyāvūtā.

By a proclamation of a single day, he promised it repentance,

b-hānā nīrā qalīlā: d-yāwmānā b-qālēh teshmaʿ.

with this light yoke: today you will hear his voice.

d-meshkaḥ da-b-ywm nasēykh: b-hādē melthā badhq lākh.

That he is able to heal you in a day, by this word he has shown you,

w-da-mṣyt hāw āp d-tethase: b-ḥadh yāwmā āp ḥāwī lākh.

and that you too are able to be healed in a single day, this also he has shown you,

d-ḥadh enōn ḥaylē hālēyn: d-yāwmānā b-qālēh teshmaʿ.

for these are one and the same power: today you will hear his voice.

w-ḥṭāyā b-ywm d-tāav: lā tetdkar lēh sakhlūtēh.

and the sinner, on the day he repents, his folly shall not be remembered against him.

w-ba-thrayhōn ḥadh shūwdāyā: eshtāwdī āsyā d-raḥmē.

And to both of them one promise the physician of mercies made,

wa-b-ḥadh yāwm yāhēv hāw: tyāvūtā l-nāshā d-askelīw.

and in a single day he gives repentance to those who have erred.

w-lā raḥīqā āsyūtēh: b-hādē qrāytā māwdaʿ lākh.

and that his healing is not far off, by this call he makes known to you,

wa-d-lā māwḥar manhar lākh: parṣōpēh b-hādē ramzākh.

and that he does not delay to shine his face upon you, by this he has signaled you.

w-lā emar lākh zel yāwmān: w-la-mḥār tā w-shābēq nā lākh.

He did not say to you, go today, and tomorrow come, and I will forgive you;

Il ne t'a pas dit : va aujourd'hui, et reviens demain, et je te pardonnerai ;

d-ʾīth hāw b-gazēh sūnqānākh: lā mtahē lākh ʿal tarʿēh.

for your need is in his treasury, he does not make you wait at his door,

w-āsyūthā mle pūqdānēh: w-lā mwḥar kad mase lākh.

and healing fills his command, and he does not delay when he heals you.

athrā gēyr rabā ya(h)v lākh: b-hādē melthā d-emar lākh.

For he has given you great room, by this word that he spoke to you,

d-tethlabav tte tesav: āsyūtā men ṭaybūtēh.

that you should take courage, come, and receive healing from his grace.

ḥadh yāwmā lam tā w-asēykh: qarā lākh āsyā d-tayābē.

come today, he says, and I will heal you; thus the physician of penitents has called you,

ḥadh ywm qāwā ṣdaī: w-pāraʿ nā d-khlhōn ywmaykh.

one day remain with me, and I will repay you for all your days.

He approaches as to a friend, and finds him an evil enemy,

da-b-khūrhānēh d-ḥalāshā: hāw d-nettagar methparas.

for by the sickness of the weak one, he schemes how he may profit.

āsyā da-shmā lā rāḥēm: bar zāwgā l-kēvā hāwē.

The physician who does not love a good name becomes a partner to the sickness,

āp men raḥmē ḥasīr hāw: w-lā b-ṭīl lēh ʿal yūlpānā.

he is lacking even in mercy, and does not trouble himself over his craft.

He is a judge of sicknesses, yet how to render judgment he does not know,

d-aykh da-l-shavṭā rādhōyā: meshtalmīn lēh marāḥē.

for as to a scourging rod, the reckless are handed over to him.

en l-āsyā d-hākan nākēl: yāhbat lēh paghrākh d-nasēywhī.

If to a physician who deceives thus, you have given your body to be healed,

kmā kēyth l-alāhā tqarev: krīhūtākh ʾō tayāvā.

da-b-ṣvʿā d-raḥmē tesav: āsyūtā d-lā ḥāshat bāh.

so that by the finger of mercy you may receive a healing that does not hurt.

nāqshīn lāh gallē l-nūrēh: wa-mnaṭar lāh d-lā tēqadh.

the waves dash against his fire, and he watches over it so it not go out,

ṭmīrā b-yammē gāwzaltēh: w-lā maḥesh lāh d-w-ʿākhā

hidden in the seas is its glow, and he does not fear that it be quenched

wa-d-ḥayē mṭarpē neshkaḥ: b-thūqpēh d-yamā methḥayal.

and that he may find tossed life, in the very strength of the sea he takes courage.

b-mapūltā d-ʿaṭlā la-mqām: bēyth qyāmā bāʿē bāh.

In a fall that is impossible to withstand, he still seeks within it a place to stand,

w-ʿal rēshēh d-māwtā sāḥē: da-l-ḥayē d-rāḥēm nadhrekh.

and upon the very head of death he swims, that he may attain the life he loves.

b-hānā nḥūr tayāvā: d-ḥayē d-zavnā mnaṭar (h)wā.

Let the penitent look on this man, who guarded only a temporal life,

āp a(n)t ḥamsen da-thpaṣe: men māwtā d-ḥāwbē ḥayaykh.

you too, endure, that you may deliver your life from the death of sins,

w-lā nehwe da-mshāwḥar lākh: men lewyā da-thyāvūtā.

and let nothing delay you from the company of repentance,

d-ḥadh ywm wa-ḥdhā shāʿā: en teshkaḥēyh ḥadhththākh.

for one day, and one hour, if you can find it, will renew you,

d-yatīr men mā d-qalīlā: ḥṭīthā d-tesrōḥ marāḥē.

for greater than a small thing is the sin that the reckless indulge in,

d-l-īlā menāh ṭaybūtā: tathqen enōn tyāvūtā.

yet lighter than it is the grace that repentance can set right for them.

reʿyānā rāḥēm ḥayē: mʿādh hāw d-neshwar ʿaṭlātā.

A mind that loves life is accustomed to leap over impossibilities,

wa-d-lā sābar lā māṭ: āpen qashyān shwārātēh.

and it does not suppose that it cannot arrive, even though its leaps are hard.
