mran ṭaʿnē īqīrē: shqal enōn men talmīdhāwhī.

Our Lord took the heavy burdens from his disciples,

w-āp ṣptā yūqrā rabā: shrāh men ṣāwrā d-talmīdhāwhī.

and anxiety too, a heavy weight, he loosed from the neck of his disciples.

la-ḥmā d-yāwmā ktav l-hōn: aykh malkā l-ḥaylāwātēh.

The bread of the day he prescribed for them, as a king does for his troops,

d-beskhm d-malkā netal: apsōnyāthā l-palāḥāwhī.

that, after the manner of a king, he might give rations to his laborers.

da-ṣlōtā d-ʿavdāwhī nāwrev: b-la-ḥmā d-yāwm ahgī nōn.

That he might enlarge the prayer of his servants, he instructed them by means of the daily bread,

d-shēlāthā d-nakpē nnaṣaḥ: b-hān pūqdānā sʿar enōn.

that the petitions of the humble might prevail, with this commandment he formed them.

d-tehwe ṣlōthhōn amīnā: ṭʿīnā pērē d-vāʿūtāh.

that their prayer might be constant, bearing the fruit of its own petition.

pqadh l-hōn d-la-ḥmā d-yāwm: hwaytōn shālīn ba-ṣlōthā.

He commanded them, concerning the bread of the day, to ask for it in prayer,

d-shelathhōn tehwe ṣīthā: w-mapqā zyntā men gazēh.

that their petition might be heeded, and draw out favor from his treasury.

w-galyūth apē neʿbedh lāh: d-meshtamʿā w-lā mettshīṭā.

and let it act with boldness, that it may be heard and not despised.

aynā d-methyaʿan shāal: ṣaʿrā ʿābēdh la-ṣlōtēh.

He who prays half-heartedly brings shame upon his own prayer,

d-hāpākā men traʿ yāhōvā: kad lā ṭʿīnā sheltēh.

for he turns back from the door of the Giver, since his petition carries no weight.

shāal īʿnā w-lā nāsēv: d-lā shel aykan d-ethpaqadh.

The sluggish one asks and does not receive, because he did not ask as he was commanded.

markan rēshāh da-ṣlōtēh: d-lā ṣalī aykh d-ethkarzat.

The head of his prayer hangs low, for he did not pray as it was proclaimed.

sharīrān nēyn da-khthīban: wa-b-pārōshē methyadaʿān.

True are the things that are written, and known to the discerning.

shlāthhōn da-b-pūrshānā: lā nāpqān d-lā māwhavthā:

their petitions, offered with discernment, do not go out without receiving a gift.

shal menēh aykh ḥakīmā: d-ydaʿ hāw km ḥāshaḥ lākh.

Ask of him like a wise man, for he knows how much you need.

qōsh b-tarʿēh aykh d-alpākh: wa-ḥzī d-ʿānē w-pātaḥ lākh.

Knock at his door as he taught you, and see that he answers and opens to you.

qrīwhī men aykā d-ʿānē lākh: d-lā the lāē d-lā yūthrān.

Call to him from where he answers you, that you may not grow weary without profit.

b-ʿī menēh aykh d-emar lākh: w-yaqar apē d-vāʿūtakh.

Seek from him as he told you, and give honor to your petition.

ṣalā lēh aykh da-rsham lākh: d-la-ḥmā d-yāwmā netal lākh.

Pray to him as he prescribed for you, that he give you the bread of the day.

Prie-le comme il te l'a prescrit, qu'il te donne le pain du jour.

w-akhōl kul yāwmā b-yāwmēh: pērā d-ʿābadā bāʿūtākh.

and eat, day by day, the fruit that your petition produces.

en ṣalīt aykh yṣōpā: lēh mṣaʿrat aykh da-l-b-īshā.

If you pray like one full of anxious care, you insult him as though he were evil,

wa-ṣlōthākh aykh maslaytā: ba-thraʿ mran methḥashbā.

and your prayer is reckoned, at the door of our Lord, as a thing despised.

w-en ṣalīt aykh sharīrā: lēh mnaṣḥat aykh da-l-ṭāvā.

But if you pray like one who is faithful, you honor him as one who is good,

w-a(n)t methḥashbat aykh ʿavdā: shmīʿā w-ṣīthā qdām mārēh.

and you are counted as a servant, heard and attentive before his master.

en teshal pārōshāīth: māwhavthākh ātayā b-zavnāh.

If you ask with discernment, your gift comes in its own time,

wa-ṣlōthākh nāṣḥā b-pērāh: d-lā estaraq qeryānāh.

and your prayer shines in its fruit, for its recitation is not empty.

l-taʿlē neqʿē ʾīth l-hōn: w-maṭllā l-ʿāwpā da-shmayā.

The foxes have their holes, and the birds of heaven their shelter,

w-lī w-lākh emar bar mārākh: layt athrā l-mesmakh rēshan.

but to me and to you, the Son of your Master said: there is no place to lay our head.

mais à moi et à toi, le Fils de ton Maître a dit : il n'y a pas de lieu pour reposer notre tête.

ḥlaṭ napshēh b-hādē ʿamākh: d-nesav ḥashā d-ghūzāyākh.

He has joined his own soul with you in this, that he might share the suffering of your exile,

wa-d-lā tʿīqākh akhsenyā: hwā lēh ḥavrā b-ṭūrāpākh.

and, that exile might not grieve you, he became your companion in your wandering.

lā lākh ʾīth athrā w-lā lī: sav ṣlīvākh w-tā bātarī.

Neither have you a place, nor have I: take up your cross and come after me.

la-b-shēh l-ghūzāyā ʿamākh: da-nbayākh men karyūtā.

He clothed himself with exile along with you, that he might comfort you in your sorrow,

lā lākh ʾīth ba-ytā w-lā lī: ethlāwā lī waḥī ʿamī.

Neither have you a house, nor have I: join yourself to me and live with me.

Tu n'as pas de maison, ni moi non plus : attache-toi à moi et vis avec moi.

tā bātarī wa-hwī lākh mēnī: w-aykā d-ettnīḥ nāaḥ a(n)t.

Come after me, and be mine; and where I find rest, you too shall rest.

en nāṭar a(n)t pūqdānaī: āp āvī sagī rāḥēm lākh.

If you keep my commandments, my Father also loves you greatly,

Si tu gardes mes commandements, mon Père aussi t'aime beaucoup,

w-enā w-avā ātēynan: w-ʿābadīnan bākh āwānā.

and I and the Father come, and make our dwelling in you.

lā tetʿīq āplā lam lī: ʾīth athrā d-bēh esmōkh rēshī.

Do not grieve, for I too have a place where I may lay my head.

la-rdīpā d-meṭul ḥūvēh: b-hādē melthā mlabev lēh.

The persecuted one, for love's sake, he encourages with this word,

lā (h)wā b-mapaqtā aḥaī: d-men athrā l-athrā ba-l-ḥōd.

It was not, my brothers, merely a departure from one place to another,

methmalyā melthā d-emar: d-sav ṣlīvā w-tā bātarī.

the word he spoke is fulfilled: Take up the cross and come after me.

lā (h)wā b-shūḥlāpā d-ʿūmrā: d-men d-w-kā l-d-w-kā nshane.

It was not a change of dwelling, that one should move from place to place,

elā b-shūḥlāpā d-hāw: men b-īshāthā l-ṭābātā.

but a change of being, from evil things to good things.

lāw d-athrāwāthā nḥalep: tābaʿā lan meltēh ba-l-ḥōdh.

It is not that we should change places that his word demands of us alone,

elā d-reʿyānē rpayā: nḥalep b-ṭābē wa-rhayā.

but that we should exchange slack minds for good and eager ones.

lāw b-shūnāyā d-men ʿūmrā: taqenmeltā d-ṣvyānēh.

It was not by removal from a dwelling that the word of his will was fulfilled,

alā b-shūnāyā hānā: d-men ṣaḥnūtā l-da-khyūtā.

but by this removal: from foulness to purity,

da-ʿyādē b-īshē neshbōq: w-d-w-bārē d-kayā nēḥōdh.

that we should abandon evil customs, and hold to pure ways of life,

w-men ʿvādē d-ʿāūlā narḥeq: w-vāthrēh nēzal da-shrārā.

and keep far from deeds of wickedness, and walk after truth,

men ḥemtā w-rūgzā neʿrōq: w-ʿeqvāthā d-ḥūbā neṭar.

that we should flee from wrath and anger, and keep to the paths of love,

men b-ʿeldvāvūtā neprōsh: w-kar d-ʾīthāwhī shaynā nēzal.

that we should separate from enmity, and go where peace is found.

kad narḥeq nāsh men ṭōhm: nethraḥaq āp men ʿāūlā.

When a man removes himself from his kin, let him also remove himself from wickedness,

hānāw d-ba-thrēyn eskēmīn: anīḥ melthā wa-nṣaḥ bāh.

This, then, in two manners, is the word that gave rest and triumphed in it.

nehwe nūkhrāyā l-aḥāwhī: wa-l-reʿyānē shāghōshē.

let him become a stranger to his brothers, and to disturbed minds.

hānā gmīrāīth malī: d-sav ṣlīvā w-tā bātarī.

This he fulfilled perfectly: Take up the cross and come after me.

w-da-mshane men yādhōʿāwhī: lā tūv nerne d-qenyānāwhī.

and he who departs from his acquaintances should no longer think of his possessions.

d-nāpēq men athrā nepōq: āp men ṣpthā d-sharyā bēh.

Let him who goes out from a place go out also from the care that dwells in it,

ʾīth hāw shrārā ba-mshīḥā: wa-mhayman men rab ba-ytākh.

There is more truth in Christ, and he is more faithful than the steward of your house.

n l-rab ba-ytākh mhaymen a(n)t: l-mārēh d-ba-ytākh lā yatīr.

If you trust your steward, do you not trust the master of the house even more?

The king has stamped a measure and given it to you, yet you ask as though nothing had been stamped.

If you bring the king's measure, you receive that from his treasury,

You have brought a measure of sloth, and he does not give to you in that measure.

By the measure that you carry, you are not found to be a laborer of the king.

b-kaylā nūkhrāyā da-ʿlaykh: d-lāw ba-ytāyā (n)t māwdaʿ a(n)t.

By the foreign measure that is upon you, you show that you are not a member of the household.

nūkhrāyā shāal sagī: w-ḥādhōrā bāh ba-d-mūtā.

A stranger asks for much, and is troubled in like manner,

lā teshal aykh ḥādhōrā: men ba-ytā d-yārtā a(n)t bēh.

do not ask like one troubled, from the house in which you are an heir.

l-ḥem yāwmā paqdākh d-teshal: da-nsīmākh ʿam ba-ytāyē.

He has commanded you to ask for the bread of the day, that he may set you among the household,

w-a(n)t shāl a(n)t sagīā: d-teḥshōv napshākh nūkhrāyā.

but you ask for much, as though you counted yourself a stranger.

hāw ḥashbākh ʿam ba-ytāyē: w-a(n)t shālat aykh nūkhrāyā.

He counts you among the household, yet you ask like a stranger.

hāw ba-b-nayā ḥāshēv lākh: w-a(n)t methnakhrēyt ḥalāshā

He counts you among the sons, yet you, weak one, make yourself a stranger.

hāw maqep w-a(n)t marḥeq a(n)t: mḥaleṭ lākh w-a(n)t pārēsh a(n)t.

He draws near, and you draw away; he joins himself to you, and you separate yourself.

hāw b-ghāwāyē ḥshav la-ḥmākh: w-a(n)t bāʿēyt aykh ba-rāyē.

He has reckoned your bread among the inner things, yet you ask as one outside.

(y)dhīʿān enēyn shēlāthā: d-ba-ytāyē wa-d-nūkhrāyē.

Known are the petitions of the household and of strangers,

w-men shēlāthhōn methyadhʿīn: gāwāyē men ba-rāyē.

and by their petitions are the insiders distinguished from the outsiders.

l-nūkhrāyā kmā d-nāsh netal: b-ḥadh ʿedānā nāsēv hāw.

To a stranger, however much a man gives, he receives it all at one time,

yārtā gēyr wa-b-rā d-ba-ytā: l-ḥem yāwmā shāal ba-l-ḥōdē.

but the heir and the son of the house asks only for the bread of the day.

lā teshal aykh nūkhrāyā: kad ba-ytāyā ḥshīv a(n)t lēh.

Do not ask like a stranger, seeing you are counted a member of his household;

Ne demande pas comme un étranger, alors que tu es compté chez lui de sa maison ;

shal aykh yrtā mzōnā: d-ywm b-ywmēh men mārākh.

ask, as an heir, for your food day by day from your Lord.

nehwe la-ḥmākh da-b-nayā: w-shārūtākh da-b-naī ḥērē.

Let your bread be that of sons, and your feast that of free men's sons,

ʿavdā gēyr sagī bāʿē: w-la-ḥmēh la-ḥmā hāw nūkhrāyā.

for the servant asks for much, and his bread is the bread of a stranger.

l-ʿatīrā yāhv masge: alāhā w-thūv methyaʿan.

To the rich man God gives abundantly, and yet he is discontented,

l-pārōshā la-ḥmā d-yāwmā: w-lā bāʿē lēh yatīrā.

but to the discerning man, the bread of the day, and he asks nothing more.

ʿatīrē aykh nūkhrāyē: sagī nāsbīn w-thūv bāʿēyn.

The rich, like strangers, receive much and still ask for more,

l-pārōshē aykh d-la-b-nayā: la-ḥmā d-yāwmā wa-thkhīlīn.

but the discerning, like sons, are content with the bread of the day.

w-la-mḥār en ʾīth lākh ḥayē: b-hōn shāl a(n)t wa-d-la-mḥār.

and if you have life for tomorrow, in that ask also for tomorrow's.

nēte mḥār w-en ḥaī a(n)t bēh: shāl a(n)t bēh māzōnā.

Let tomorrow come, and if you are alive in it, ask in it for sustenance.

qūm ʿal yāwmā wa-b-ghāwēh: shal sūnqānā d-ḥāshaḥ lākh.

Stand upon the day, and within it ask for the need that serves you.

b-rīkhū d-ʿam ḥayē d-yhēv: āp sūnqānhōn hāw yāhv.

Blessed is he who, along with the life he gives, also gives their need,

w-māwhavtēh rāhṭā d-thāwdaʿ: b-saybārtā l-khlhōn ḥayē.

and his gift hastens to make itself known, through sustenance, to all living things.
