men ṭaybūtā meshtadar: kūrhānā qdām ʿūndānā.

From grace is sickness sent, before the departing,

d-netal apthā l-ḥaṭāyā: da-nraʿe la-thyāvūtā.

that it may give the sinner room, to incline toward repentance;

pour donner au pécheur un répit, pour qu'il s'incline vers le repentir ;

d-nahpekh lebēh men ʿāūlā: wa-nsīmīh b-zadīqūthā.

that it may turn his heart from iniquity, and set it within righteousness.

d-neshqōl reʿyānēh d-nevsōr: l-hālēyn zavnē d-maʿwel (h)wā.

that his mind may take up to condemn those times in which he did wrong;

pour que son esprit se résolve à condamner les temps où il fit le mal ;

nargash d-ātē tvōʿā: wa-ntaqen lēh ḥūshbānā.

let him perceive that the exactor comes, and make ready for him a reckoning.

nedaʿ da-qrev shalīṭā: wa-nṭayev lēh qūrbānē.

let him know that the Ruler draws near, and prepare for him offerings;

qu'il sache que le Souverain approche, et qu'il lui prépare des offrandes ;

kūrhānā ātē d-naʿhed: ʿāūlā da-sʿar sagīā.

Sickness comes to call to mind the iniquity that he did in abundance,

bēh ḥāzyā napshā ʿāūlāh: d-lā ḥzātēh kad ʿanyā bēh.

in it the soul sees its own wrong, which it did not see while it was busy with it.

hāw manhar hāwnāh d-teḥze: b-īshāthā da-ṭmīrān lāh.

It is that which lights the mind, to see the evils that are hidden from it,

w-maksā la-khrīhā ʾūrḥēh: da-b-ḥūlmānā mdēsh (h)wā.

and uncovers to the sick his path, which in health he trod down heedlessly.

kūrhānā spar ʿwhdānē hāw: d-b-īshāthā d-mestaʿran ban.

Sickness is the record of remembrances, of the evils that are wrought in us,

hāw pātaḥ edhnā d-seʿrat: marāḥūtā b-ḥūlmānā.

it is that which opens the ear, that recklessness had shut in health.

hāw yhv l-pūm d-mwdē: ba-ḥṭāhē d-neshtavqūn lēh.

It is that which gives the mouth to confess, the sins that it may be forgiven.

bēh metdkar nāshā ʿvādhwhī: d-lā nethʿashnūn reshyānāwhī.

By it a man is reminded of his deeds, lest his intentions grow strong.

hānā shavṭā d-ʿūdrānā: makes mkhāwen mārōdē.

This rod of help chastises and instructs the rebellious,

da-nnapeṣ menhōn ʿāūlā: d-ba-ḥṭāhayhōn lā nēz(l)ūn.

that it may shake iniquity out from them, so that they may not walk on in their sins.

hādē ʿaynā d-b-w-ḥrānā: wālē d-tehwe l-marāḥē.

This eye of testing belongs, of right, to the reckless.

d-vāh neḥzōn mūmē d-napshā: w-nethḥapṭūn ʿal ḥūlālāh.

that by it they may see the blemishes of the soul, and be roused to care for its healing.

ʾīth sakhlā d-hākan āmar: d-vātar zavnā tāav nā.

There is a fool who says thus: 'After a time I shall repent,'

w-napshēh b-savrā tālē lāh: d-māṭē ʿdamā l-saybūtā.

and suspends his soul on hope, that he may reach even to old age.

tyāvūtā b-rūḥqā aqīm: w-zalīlūtā men qūrbā.

He set repentance far off, and wantonness near;

Il a mis le repentir au loin, et la débauche près de lui ;

sūrḥānē b-qūrbā shamesh: w-sām kēnūtā b-shūwdāyā.

he served sins in what is near, and set righteousness in a promise.

ʾīth marāḥā d-methḥashav: d-ʾīth bēh d-neḥṭe w-da-nthūv.

There is a reckless one who thinks that in him is room both to sin and to repent,

w-palegh zabnē la-ḥṭīthā: wa-yrānē la-thyāvūtā.

and he has divided the seasons: some for sin, and others for repentance.

sāmh l-māwtā men rūḥqā: w-la-thyāvūtā l-khā menēh.

He set death far off, and repentance close beside him,

w-qarev shāṭyūtā ṣdāwhī: d-ba-srīḥūtā nhalekh bāh.

and brought folly near to himself, that in wantonness he might walk.

la-thyāvūtā emar zelī: qāwāī lī l-wāth saybūtā.

To repentance he said, 'Go; wait for me until old age.'

l-tamān ātē nā b-mūmaī: w-bēkhī men ʿāūlā sāḥē nā.

'There I will come with my blemishes, and by weeping wash myself from iniquity.'

b-ḥarthā d-yāwmaī katarī lī: w-hāydēyn l-wātēkhī ṣāēv nā.

'At the end of my days wait for me, and then I will come to you.'

ethparge ba-ʿlaymūtā: ekhōl pērē d-ṭalyūtā.

'Let me take my pleasure in youth; let me eat the fruits of boyhood.'

l-shāṭyūtā gḥekh w-emar lāh: ywmn ʿamēkhī bāsēm nā.

He laughed toward folly and said to her: 'Today I delight in you.'

Il a ri à la folie et lui a dit : « Aujourd'hui je me délecte de toi. »

tā b-zmrēkhī apṣaḥīnī: da-b-ʿenynēkhī ṣbē nā.

'Come, gladden me with your song, for in your company I delight.'

hālēyn sakhlā w-zalīlā: b-gāw tarʿītēh methrane.

These things the fool and the wanton one ponders in his mind,

w-avʿedh wa-shdā men ṣedāwhī: l-nakhpūtā wa-l-taqnūtā.

and he drives away and casts from beside him modesty and rectitude.

shaqlēh l-kaylā d-yāwmātēh: w-ba-mnāwāthā mparesh lēh.

He takes the measure of his days, and divides it into portions:

b-hālēyn yāwmē ḥāṭē nā: wa-b-hālēyn meshtaḥlap nā.

'In these days I sin, and in these I shall change.'

« En ces jours-ci je pèche, et en ceux-là je me changerai. »

karyā (h)ī rūḥēh d-ṣrīkhā: lā tepsōqīh b-thūhāyākh.

Faint is the spirit of the destitute; do not cut it off by your delay.

zʿōryā (h)ī napshēh b-ʾūlṣānā: lā tāwḥar men ʿūdrānēh.

His soul is brought low in distress; do not hold back from his help.

ba-ṭīl (h)wā men zedaqāthā: ʿālmā zavnā sagīā.

The world was idle from acts of charity for a long time,

w-ʿal hādē emar māran: d-hav la-snīqā d-shāl lākh.

And concerning this our Lord said: 'Give to the needy who asks of you.'

lā teshtāwdē d-yāhv a(n)t: d-thūv beṭlānā tēḥōdh lākh.

Do not promise that you will give, and then let idleness seize you again.

aykh pāʿlā ʿvādhā ḥāwā: d-ʿedān aghrā neṭav lākh.

Show yourself a laborer at the work, that at the time of wages it may go well for you.

shūwdāyā l-bar men karmā hāw: wa-b-gāw karmā pūlḥānā.

A promise stands outside the vineyard; within the vineyard is labor.

lā tēmar lī d-ʿābēdh a(n)t: ḥbar beṭlānā hāw shūwdāyā.

Do not tell me that you are doing it; a promise is the companion of idleness.

b-ʿakh alāhā tyāvūtā: lā teshtāwḥar tetal lēh.

God has need of repentance; do not delay to give it to him.

shalākh napshā mṭakastā: d-lā tūhāyā qarev lēh.

Your well-ordered soul asks of you that you bring it without delay.

b-pūqdānā rhīvā radhpākh: d-ba-ʿgal taseq qūrbānākh.

With an urgent commandment he pursues you, that quickly you offer up your offering,

kad tārēv wa-msarhev lākh: d-la-d-shāl lākh lā tekhle.

while he presses and hastens you — do not withhold it from him who asks of you.

hānā pūqdānā ḥpīṭā: da-nqadashākh menshlī bāʿē.

This urgent commandment seeks to sanctify you at once,

Ce commandement zélé cherche à te sanctifier aussitôt,

w-lā marpe lākh d-teshtāwdē: tyāvūtā la-ḥrēyn zavnā.

and does not allow you to promise repentance for another time.

ywmān lam qālēh teshmaʿ: w-lā tqashe l-margāzūtēh.

'Today,' it says, 'hear his voice, and do not harden yourself against his provocation.'

hān qālā hākan marhev: d-yāwmn nqarvākh l-alāhā.

This voice thus urges: that today he may bring you near to God.

psaq enōn zavnē qdhāmaykh: d-ba-ʿvādhā nqīmākh d-teplōḥ.

He cut off the seasons before you, that by deeds he might set you up to labor,

w-pasqēh l-shūwdāyākh da-mḥār: d-yāwmān nēkhōl men pērayk.

and cut off your promise of tomorrow, that today he might eat from your fruits.

shūwdāyē lam d-īlī enōn: d-qayām nā w-lā ʿābar nā.

'Promises,' he says, 'are mine, for I am steadfast and do not pass away;

« Les promesses, » dit-il, « sont miennes, car je suis stable et je ne passe pas ;

lākh dēyn d-teʿbedh paqedtākh: d-ḥayē d-yāwmā mshakan a(n)t.

but to you it is commanded to act, for you grant life only for a day.'

d-eshtāwdē b-shūlṭānī sīmā: d-ḥayā nā w-lā māath nā.

'For it is within my power to promise that I live and do not die.'

lā tethle b-savrā l-mārākh: da-b-savrēh tlēyn kul da-hwāw.

Do not make your Lord depend on a mere hope, for on his faithfulness all that came to be depends.

shūwdāyā kēyth d-alāhā hāw: mqāwe w-pāraʿ shūwdāyāwhī.

The promise, then, that is God's endures, and he fulfills his promises.

d-ba-rnāshā dēyn sūʿrānā hāw: d-lā tdīl da-mḥār d-īlēh hāw.

But as for man, this is his business: that tomorrow is not his own — only today is his.

ḥadh men shāōlē ḥshōbayhī: l-pūqdānēh hāw qadīshā.

Reckon yourself one of those who ask, in view of that holy commandment of his:

napshā d-khīthā d-shāl lākh: d-lā ʿūwākhā qarev lēh.

the pure soul that asks of you — bring it aid without delay.

rhīv hāw b-raḥmāwhī da-nqadesh: l-ḥaṭāyē ba-thyāvūtā.

He is urgent in his mercies, to sanctify sinners through repentance,

w-men ramshā ṣābē d-khlnāsh: nzāwedh napshēh b-ṭābathā.

and from the evening of life he wishes that everyone provide his soul with good things.

l-medam da-l-wāth alāhā: rāhṭ lā tsīm tūhāyā.

Toward what belongs to God, run — set no delay.

la-thyāvūtā w-zedaqāthā: lā tēte b-īdh shūwdāyā.

To repentance and to acts of charity, do not come by way of promise.

kul da-b-shūwdāyā nāpal: (h)ī rashītēh beṭlānā (h)ī.

Everyone who falls into promising — its very beginning is idleness.

ḥnānēh mtakes d-alāhā: men d-meshtāwdē l-alāhā.

God's mercy rebukes whoever makes mere promises to God.

la-d-ʿārēq ṣēydh alāhā: ptaḥ lēh tarʿā w-shadarayhī.

To him who flees from God, open the door and send him back;

À celui qui fuit loin de Dieu, ouvre-lui la porte et renvoie-le ;

l-wāth mārēh rāhēṭ ʿavdā: d-rōsh lēh ʾūrḥā d-nēzal bāh.

the servant runs toward his master — clear for him the road that he may walk in it.

la-bebayhī wa-ʿbar ʿamēh: d-hāw d-ʿārēq men alāhā.

Encourage him, and go along with him, he who flees from God,

w-ba-rekayhī aykh da-nmanaʿ: w-neghmōr l-ʾūrḥā d-mapaqtēh.

and bless him, that he may arrive, and complete the road of his going forth.

ʿāwālā b-īdh shūwdāyā: athrā mapte l-b-īshāthā.

The wrongdoer, by means of promise, opens a place for evils;

Le méchant, par le moyen de la promesse, ouvre une place aux maux ;

l-ṭāvtā marḥeq sām lāh: d-nehwe zavnā l-sanyātēh.

he sets goodness far off, that there might be time for his hateful deeds.

men qdām b-īshtā da-mshamesh: la-thyāvūtā shādē lāh.

Before the evil that he still serves, he casts repentance away,

wa-l-shūwdāyā d-pathyūtā: shāql ʿāūlā d-neʿshan bēh.

and to a loose promise wrongdoing clings, that it may grow strong by it.

arʿā rabtā yāhv lāh: l-zīzānā d-marāḥūtā.

A great field he gives over to the tares of insolence.

b-sūʿrānē d-zadīqūtā: nhe l-khōn savrā ḥalāshē.

In deeds of righteousness, let there be hope for the weak,

d-hānāw shūrā d-thūkhlānā: ba-ʿvādā ṭābē nēḥōdh.

for this is the wall of trust, that one holds fast by good deeds.

mhīrūth ṣevatē mardūthā: l-hānā mwbedh ḥezwānā.

The skilled adornment is discipline; this, spectacle destroys.
