shlāw aḥaī lā nāsh neqbōl: ba-ṣlōthā ʿal bar zāwgāh.

Cease, my brothers: let no one hold a complaint, in prayer, against his companion,

w-lā nāsh tūv nashlem ḥavrēh: la-thbaʿthā b-ʿedān raḥmē.

and let no one hand his fellow over again to vengeance, in the time of mercy.

lā teqrōn rūghzā b-d-īnā: b-hāw ʿedānā d-ḥūsāyā.

Do not call down wrath into judgment, in that time of forgiveness.

lā neʿhadh nāsh ʿal ḥavrēh: sakhlūtā bēyth shūvqānā.

Let no one recall his companion's folly, in the place of forgiveness.

shvōqw a(n)tōn w-neshbōq l-khōn: mraḥmānā aykh d-alepkhōn.

Forgive, and it shall be forgiven you: be merciful, as he taught you.

elā shābaqat aykanā: ḥāyrat d-tesav shūvqānā.

If you have not forgiven, how do you expect to receive forgiveness?

shāvōqā hādē qʿā lākh: da-shvōq l-aḥūkh w-eshbōq lākh.

The Forgiver cries this out to you: forgive your brother, and I will forgive you.

b-kul d-w-kā māran qadhmā hāw: w-hārkā ḥrāyā sām napshēh.

In every place our Lord is first, but here he set himself last.

d-mā da-shbaqīt a(n)t la-khnāthākh: hāydēyn āp hāw neshbōq lākh.

For when you have forgiven your fellow, then he too will forgive you.

Car quand tu auras pardonné à ton compagnon, alors lui aussi te pardonnera.

qadhmāyā sāmākh d-tehwe: b-hān pūqdānā d-shūvqānā.

He has set you first to stand in this commandment of forgiveness,

d-teʿbadh shūvqānā l-ḥavrākh: w-hāydēyn neshbōq sakhlūtākh.

that you should grant forgiveness to your companion, and then he will forgive your folly.

ethraḥam wa-mraḥem nā: ḥūn l-aḥūkh w-enā eḥnākh.

"Have compassion, and I will show compassion; have mercy on your brother, and I will have mercy on you.

shrī rūghzā da-l-wāth ḥavrākh: d-āp rūghzī eshre da-l-wāthākh.

Loose your wrath toward your companion, that my wrath too may be loosed toward you."

l-tarʿūthā qashesh māran: b-pūqdānā men qūrbānā.

By commandment, our Lord set reconciliation before the offering.

b-(h)ī d-emar d-zel ethraʿā: w-ken tā qarev qūrbānākh.

In that he said: "Go, be reconciled, and then come, offer your gift."

En cela qu'il a dit : « Va, réconcilie-toi, et ensuite viens offrir ton don. »

l-ḥūbā qashesh men devḥā: wa-l-shaynā men ṣlāwāthā.

He set love before sacrifice, and peace before prayers.

l-tarʿūthā d-nāshā aqdam: men tarʿūtā d-māwhavtēh.

He set the reconciliation of man before the acceptance of his own gift:

l-w-qdam lam raʿā l-aḥūkh: w-ken mqarev a(n)t qūrbānākh.

"First," he says, "be reconciled to your brother, and then you shall offer your gift,

« D'abord, dit-il, réconcilie-toi avec ton frère, et ensuite tu offriras ton don,

d-ḥasīr a(n)t malā l-w-qdam: w-hāydēyn teḥshōv yūthrānākh.

for what you lack, fill first, and then reckon your gain.

ettshīgh l-w-qdam men rūghzā: w-ken dābaḥ a(n)t tāwdītā.

Wash yourself first of wrath, and then offer up your confession,

aykh pedtā l-bash tarʿūtā: w-hāydēyn mkahnat l-alāhā.

put on reconciliation like a robe, and then serve God as a priest."

hānā pūqdānā mshaynā: sām lan māran ba-sīmā.

This peace-making commandment our gentle Lord set for us,

wa-ḥnan b-ʿedān ṣlāwthā: l-rūghzā d-nēte qārēynan.

and we, at the time of prayers, call wrath to come.

mā da-khnashnan da-nṣale: rūghzā b-reṭnā masgēynan.

When we gather to pray, we multiply wrath with grumbling,

w-nāsh nāsh ʿal ḥavrēh qābl: d-nūrā nasep ba-khnātēh.

and each one complains against his companion, adding fire to his fellow.

mḥayqīn tarʿē d-bēyth qūdshā: wa-mzīʿīn āp pāthōrā.

The doors of the sanctuary creak, and even the altar-table shakes.

b-hāw ʿedānā d-tarʿūtā: methḥazyā b-ʿeldvāvūtā.

In that very hour of reconciliation, enmity is seen;

En cette heure même de réconciliation, l'inimitié se montre ;

l-bēyth qūdshā rehṭat ʿelat: rghīzūtā l-wāth akthānē.

wrath ran and entered the sanctuary, together with the accusers,

d-tesrōḥ ʾūrḥā qdām raḥmē: d-nāpqīn d-nasōn napshāthā.

to block the way before the mercies that go forth to heal souls.

ḥadh lāṭ ḥavrēh da-ʿqōrayhī: ḥrēnā mqaṭregh la-khnātēh.

One curses his companion, to root him out; another accuses his fellow;

L'un maudit son compagnon, pour le déraciner ; l'autre accuse son prochain ;

ḥrēnā b-ʿedān rūḥāpā: l-aḥūhī mashlem la-thbaʿthā.

another, at the time of the Spirit's hovering, hands his brother over to vengeance.

kāhnā mathqen qūrbānā: w-sakhlā mṭayev qūṭrāgēh.

The priest prepares the offering, and the fool readies his accusation.

kāhnā qārē l-shūvqānā: w-hāw qārē lēh la-thbaʿthā.

The priest calls for forgiveness, and that man calls for vengeance,

l-nūrā d-nāpqā l-d-w-kāyā: aspūh rghīzē ba-ḥdādē.

and to the fire that goes forth for cleansing, the wrathful add fuel against one another.

qvūlyā w-reṭnā men kldūka: ḥyāqā d-tarʿē men kul gab.

Complaint and grumbling from every place; a creaking of doors on every side.

teshmeshtā d-rāmā ʿbadhnāh: maṣūthā ksīthā klyōm.

We have made the service of the Most High a hidden contention every day.

klnāsh men ḥavrēh mbagan: l-manīū nehwe shūvqānā.

Everyone slanders his companion: to whom shall forgiveness go?

ṣāyrāthā d-tarʿē khylān: kmā shāḥqīn l-hēyn naṣāyē.

The hinges of the doors are worn thin, how the quarrelers grind them down!

b-ʿedānā d-nāḥēth māran: d-la-ghvīltah nḥase da-ḥṭāt.

At the time when our Lord comes down, to pardon his creature that has sinned,

mqarvīnan lēh qūṭrāghāyn: d-rūghzā b-raḥmē nḥalep lan.

we bring him our accusations, that he should exchange mercy for wrath toward us.

b-ʿedān qūdhshā d-zādēq (h)wā: d-khlnāsh ʿal ḥavrēh nevʿe.

At the holy hour when it was right that each should plead for his companion,

bēh sagyē d-lā hāwnā: qābalīn hānā ʿal hānā

in it, many senseless ones complain, this one against that one.

mʿāwkhīn ʾ(n)tōn lāh l-māwhavtēh: d-ḥanānā men ṣēdaykōn.

You hinder his gift of grace from reaching you.

da-shnā d-nāpēq men rāwmā: layt lēh athrā ba-rghīzē.

For the peace that comes forth from on high has no place among the wrathful,

elā shwēyn ʾ(n)tōn ḥadh ʿam ḥadh: aykan neshtayan ʿamkhōn.

unless you are at peace, one with another — how shall peace be made with you?

hālēyn emar (h)wā māran: l-hāw da-b-ʿayhī da-ndhūn d-īnēh.
