nesṭōrīōs b-ʾūlṣānēh: neqʿe w-nēmar d-alāhā ʾ(n)t.

Let Nestorius, in his affliction, cry out and say, "You are God."

w-men tashnīqēh ʾūṭīkē: nāwdē da-hwayt ba-rnāshā.

and from his torment let Eutyches confess that you became man.

w-lan da-ḥzaynākh akhwātan: w-haymenn bākh d-alāhā ʾ(n)t.

And we, who have seen you like ourselves, and have believed in you that you are God,

ḥsōkh lan men (h)ī gēhanā: da-nṭīrā l-kul da-khpar bākh.

spare us from that Gehenna, kept for all who have denied you,

d-aykh talmīdaykh asharnākh: w-akhwāthhōn haymenn bākh.

for like your disciples we have confirmed you, and like them we have believed in you.

b-kenpayhōn mārī nestatar: b-yāwmā rabā d-mēthīthākh.

Under their wings, my Lord, let us be sheltered, on the great day of your coming,

wa-d-qabeln malpānūtēh: d-thōmā shlīḥā kārōzākh.

we who have received the teaching of Thomas the apostle, your herald;

nous qui avons reçu l'enseignement de Thomas l'apôtre, ton héraut ;

bāʿūtēh tqūm b-apayn: mā d-ātayt b-shūvḥā d-avūkh.

may his prayer stand before us when you come in the glory of your Father,

d-āwdīnan tamīmāīth: kad lā b-ṣynan rabūtākh.

for we have confessed in simplicity, while not searching out your greatness.

neshtwe b-raḥmē la-ḥnānākh: w-nāwdē lākh ʿal ṭaybūthākh.

May we be found worthy, by mercy, of your compassion, and give thanks to you for your grace,

wa-b-hāw yāwmā nezmar lākh: teshbōḥtā b-qālā rāmā.

and on that day we shall sing to you glory with a voice lifted high,

w-la-ʾvūkh ʿamākh shawyāīth: wa-l-rūḥqūdhshā b-khlʿedān.

and to your Father together with you equally, and to the Holy Spirit, at every season.

lāw ḥdatā (h)ī haymānūtan: lā nḥadthīh ba-hpākhāthā.

Not new is our faith: let us not renew it with reversals.

lāw sharwāyā hāw yūlpānan: lā nqarev lēh ʿūqāvā

Not novel is our teaching: let us not bring scrutiny to it.

lāw ḥadhthāīth eshkaḥnāyhī: l-alāhā d-nedhrōsh nevṣywhī.

Not newly did we find him, God, that we should search him out and examine him.

akhmā d-ʾītāwhī (h)wā ʾīthāwhī: lāw ʿam zavnē mashtaḥlap.

As he was, so he is; he does not change along with the times.

aykā pgaʿ bākh shūrāyēh: d-terhaṭ bātar shūlāmēh.

Where has his beginning met you, that you should run after his end?

d-mūtēh aykā ḥazyā lākh: da-b-shūālāwhī sābēkh a(n)t.

Where have you seen his likeness, that you tangle yourself in questions about him?

āwdā d-gavlakh men ʿaprā: lā tʿaqev d-aykan ʾītāwhī.

Confess that he formed you from dust; do not inquire how he is.

sghōdh lēh d-parqakh b-īḥīdēh: lā tevṣe d-mānāw yaldēh.

Worship him, who redeemed you by his Only-Begotten; do not examine what his birth is.

lā teprōʿāyhī hapkāīth: ḥlāp ṭaybūtā marshūtā.

Do not repay him backwards, contention in place of grace.

b-tāwdītā qadhem apāwhī: w-lā tdūsh tarʿēh ba-b-ṣāthā.

Go before his face with confession, and do not tread his door with inquiry.

sīm lākh nīshā d-teshbōḥtā: d-lēh ḥānyā haymānūtā.

Set for yourself the mark of praise, for to him faith is fitting.

lā teshdē ba-b-rā ḥashē: da-ghne hāw menākh b-ʾīthūtēh.

Do not cast sufferings upon the Son, whose being is hidden from you.

lā mṣyt d-teprōʿ māwhavtēh: āplā teṭlōm ṭaybūtēh.

You cannot repay his gift, nor can you deny his grace,

w-da-l-shūvḥēh lā sāpēq a(n)t: lā teḥbōṣ ʿal ʿūqābēh.

and since you are not sufficient for his glory, do not press on with inquiry into him.

rebō pūmīn en teqne: ʿdakēyl d-w-gā ʾ(n)t ṣydh sharbēh.

Even if you gain ten thousand mouths, you are [...] beside his matter,

Si tu acquérais dix mille bouches, tu serais [...] devant son mystère,

w-kad teʿōp lākh tāwdīthā: en ṭālōmā ʾ(n)t men yādaʿ.

and though confession comes easily to you, who knows if you are a denier?

ʿal (h)ī da-b-rākh māwdē a(n)t: āw la-d-parqākh pāraʿ a(n)t.

Do you confess him as Son, or do you repay him who redeemed you?

Confesses-tu qu'il est ton Fils, ou paies-tu de retour celui qui t'a racheté ?

d-gavlakh men kaī āwtartāyhī: wa-d-parqākh men īqartāyhī.

Him who formed you, how then have you profited him? And him who redeemed you, how have you honored him?

ṭalmūh hākēyl marāḥē: l-(h)ī da-b-rā wa-l-(h)ī da-praq.

The reckless have therefore denied both that he is Son, and that he redeemed.

w-da-ʾykanā b-dā hā bāṣyn: wa-b-mānā praq hā bāʿēyn.

and how [...], behold, they search; and by what means he redeemed, behold, they seek.

lā ākapīn ʿal pūrqānā: elā d-nevṣōn d-aykan hāw.

They are not concerned about salvation, but only to examine how it is.

lā māwdēyn ʿal ṭaybūthā: elā dārshīn da-b-mānā (h)ī.

They do not confess the grace, but dispute by what it is.

l-bakhw shūālē qāṭōlē: da-nʿaqvūn lā (h)wā d-nāwdōn.

They have taken up murderous questions, to investigate, not to confess.

npaqīw bātar yaqīrāthā: kad zālīn men mākāthā.

They have gone out after weighty matters, departing from lowly things,

hā mshaalīn la-ghnīḥāthā: wa-mhapkhīn la-d-ḥīlāthā.

behold, they question hidden things, and turn over things fearful.

mīth alāhā āw lā mīth: mshalīn yāwmān ḥerḥāyē.

"Did God die, or did he not die?" the contentious ask today.

« Dieu est-il mort, ou n'est-il pas mort ? » demandent aujourd'hui les querelleurs.

zgēīr a(n)t leshānī men hādē: lā tesḥe lākh b-gāwzaltā.

Restrained are you, my tongue, from this: do not burn yourself in the blaze,

d-māwtā hāw hānā shūālā: da-l-sagyēē shōʿīthā hāw.

for this question is death, which has been a byword to many.

hpākhtā (h)ī hādē d-ḥanpūthā: w-la-ghmīrē lā methbaʿyā.

This is a reversal of impiety, and is not sought by the perfect.

sharbā hāw da-mdīl gūdāpā: wa-d-hārēgh bēh mestagap.

It is a matter that drips blasphemy, and whoever ponders it is harmed.

ʿeltā (h)ī d-eshkaḥ sāṭānā: d-naṭʿe bāh la-d-hāms bāh.

It is an occasion Satan has found, to lead astray by it whoever dwells on it.

nūrā (h)ī d-ākalā kasyāīth: wa-d-mahpekh lāh ṭālq bāh.

It is a fire that consumes secretly, and whoever turns to it is destroyed by it.

gūrāghā hāw da-b-shūālā: l-khāpōrūtā qārēv nāsh.

It is a snare, by which, through questioning, one is drawn near to denial.

ksēyn pethgāmē wa-ḥthīmīn: ashedh w-emar gavrīl.

"Hidden are the words, and sealed," Gabriel testified and said,

w-lā pasheq lēh l-dhānīēyl: aydā d-nēlap ṣābē (h)wā.

and he did not explain to Daniel what he wished to learn.

kad eshtaal nūrānā: lā ṣvā d-netal pūshāqā.

When the Fiery One was asked, he did not wish to give an explanation,

elā b-kesyā yaqar (h)wā: l-tashʿīthā malyath tahrā.

but in secrecy he honored the story full of wonder.

rghīgh (h)wā hānā da-mshael: w-sagī shvīḥ (h)wā d-meshtaal.

Eager was the one who asked, and greatly renowned was the one asked,

w-da-d-ḥel (h)wā men hān sharbā: b-kesyā yaqar hāw ḥāthmā.

and he who stood in awe of this matter, in secrecy honored that seal.

kad shūālā l-ḥōdh qarev: dānīēyl aykh da-nʿaqev.

When Daniel offered only a question, as one who would inquire,

wa-shmaʿ (h)wā da-khsēyn enōn: pethghāmē wa-nṭar shethqā.

and heard that the words were hidden, he kept silence.

melthā d-yeqrat ʿal ʿīrā: hā mzalīn lāh dārōshē.

The word that was too weighty for the Watcher, behold, disputants belittle it,

and the matter Daniel did not examine, behold, the reckless wear it down.

kad eshtaal malakhā: b-shethqā rheṭ (h)wā nestatar.

When the angel was asked, into silence he ran to be sheltered,

w-ḥāwī da-khsēyn pethghāmē: d-lā tūv neshmaʿ shūālā.

and showed that the words are hidden, so that the question would not be heard again.

w-armī ḥātmā ʿal sharbā: d-lā nebzūnāyhī shūālē.

and set a seal upon the matter, lest questions plunder it,

d-aykh hānā ḥāthmā zādēq: d-narmōn sāprē ʿal seprē.

for it is right that such a seal as this should scribes set upon books,

wa-nyaqrūn sharbēh da-b-rā: akhmā d-yaqrēh gavryēl.

and that they should honor the matter of the Son, as Gabriel honored it.

hāw malpānā nūrānā: kad eshtaal lā pasheq.

That fiery teacher, when he was asked, did not explain,

d-nehwe ṭūpsā la-d-malep: d-lā neḥbōṣ ʿal kasyāthā.

that he might be a pattern for the teacher, not to press upon hidden things.

w-en malakhā rūḥānā: pūmā d-qadīsh ba-khyānēh.

And if the spiritual angel, whose mouth is holy by nature,

shethqā gvā lēh ʿal hādē: d-lā npasheq (h)wā l-dānīēyl.

chose silence in this, not explaining to Daniel,

The story concerning God they recount in bodily terms,

l-pūrqānā d-ḥarar ʿamm: shḥīmāīth meshtaʿēyn lēh.

and the salvation that freed the peoples they discourse on plainly.

mshalīn kad lā da-ḥīlīn: mpashqīn kad lā ratīthīn.

They ask without fear, they explain without trembling.

Ils interrogent sans crainte, ils expliquent sans trembler.

shāmʿīn kad lā methrahbīn: b-khlhēyn sagī gūmdānīn.

They hear without being alarmed, being in all things very presumptuous.

kyānāīth meshtaʿēyn lēh: l-sharbā d-ʿīrē lā gashūhī.

They discourse naturally on a matter that the Watchers did not touch,

pakīhāīth tānēyn lāh: l-melthā mzīʿath la-khrōbē.

lightly they recount the word that moves the cherubim.

a(n)t lāw hākan shāmōʿā: lā teshtargal aykh hālēyn.

gar shethqā d-haymānūtā: w-lā nzīʿūnākh shūālē.

Dwell in the silence of faith, and let not questions move you.

shmaʿ a(n)t māwtēh d-alāhā: lā tṣūtāyhī ba-rāyāīth.

You hear of the death of God; do not listen to it in an outward way.

ḥyzī d-hāw māwtēh nūḥāmā hāw: w-qeṭlēh rabā pūrqānā hāw.

See that his death is resurrection, and his slaying is great salvation.

māwtā mīth bēh b-maḥyānā: lāw gēyr hāw ḥav men māwtā.

Death died in the Life-giver, for it was not he who was overcome by death,

w-ḥashē b-ḥashēh eshtanaqw: d-kad lā ḥāsh ethnagadh.

and sufferings were tormented in his suffering, for while he did not suffer, he was scourged.

hewyū gēyr ḥashā d-ḥashē: d-ḥashīw bēh ḥashē d-lā ḥāsh.

For he became the suffering of sufferings, in whom sufferings suffered though he did not suffer,

w-ḥashē da-sbalīw ḥāshōshē: henōn ḥashē sbalīw menēh.

and the sufferings that sufferers endured, those very sufferings endured from him.

aḥshēh l-ḥashā kad bālaʿ: mḥā l-kēbē kad methnagadh:

He made suffering suffer while he swallowed it; he struck pains while being scourged,

he slew death while dying; he did all things while being scorned.

mmītānēh d-māwtā hāw mwtēh: w-maḥshānā d-ḥashē ḥashēh.

The killer of death is his own death, and the tormentor of sufferings is his suffering.

ashīm lēh l-ḥashā b-neghdāwhī: w-ḥashā d-nakēywhī lā eshkaḥ.

He set suffering at naught in his own scourging, and suffering could not harm him.

(h)ī da-ṣvā w-mīth lāw māwtā: d-ḥayē b-māwtēh madhnaḥ (h)wā.

That he willed and died was not death, since by his death he made life dawn.

lū qṭīrā da-b-rēh (h)wā: ken māwtā meshtamah (h)wā.

If it had been forced upon him, then it would be called death.

ṣvā wa-sʿar aykh alāhā: d-khlmā d-vāʿē pshīq hāw lēh.

He willed and did as God, for whom whatever he wills is easy,

wadh ṣevyānēh eshtamlī: lā (h)wā d-ḥashē hāw sūʿrānēh.

and since his will was fulfilled, his act was not one of imposed suffering.

elū gēyr ṣvā (h)wā da-nmūth: w-lā eshkaḥ ṭāv ḥāēsh (h)wā.

For if he had willed to die and been unable, then indeed he would have suffered,

The Life-giver went up to the cross, and the dead were raised at his voice,

at his suffering creation trembled, and the world learned that he is the Creator.

b-māwtēh ḥāwī d-lā māēth: d-āp kad mīth ḥayē palegh.

By his death he showed that he does not die, for even while dying he dispensed life.

b-hādē ʿālmā ethḥakam: d-lā mthōm ḥāēsh alāhā.

By this the world grew wise, that God never suffers.

manīū mpīs (h)wā hākanā: d-alāhā lā māyōthā hāw.

Who could have so persuaded us that God is not mortal,

akhmā d-hāw māwtēh alef: d-ḥayē sghīw bēh l-māyōtē

as that very death of his taught, that life increased through it for mortals,

d-lā māath hāw alāhā: hāydēyṣ nāsh lā yādaʿ (h)wā.

that God does not die? this no one knew until then.

que Dieu ne meurt pas ? Cela, jusque-là, nul ne le savait.

b-māwtēh hāw alep hādē: d-lā mṣ māwtā qārēv lēh.

By his death he taught this: that death cannot come near him.

w-en nāsh ṣābē d-neṣṭanaʿ: w-neshre l-hālēyn d-āmar nā.

And if anyone wishes to be clever, and to refute what I say,

nehwe yādaʿ d-āp d-īlēh: pshyqān enēyn la-shrāyā.

let him know that his own words too are easy to unravel.

lāw ba-d-rāshā w-ḥeryānā: methqaymā haymānūtā.

Not by disputation and strife does faith stand firm,

d-mashmaʿ edhnā (h)ī wa-d-ḥūbā: d-lā ʿūqāvā wa-b-ṣāthā.

for it is a hearing of the ear and of love, without inquiry and examination.

enā gēyr lāw ba-d-rāshā: hālēyn aytīth la-mṣʿthā.

For I have not brought these things into the midst by way of disputation,

w-lāw ḥeryānā aʿīrēth: b-hālēyn da-thnāt haymānūtī.

nor have I stirred up strife by these things which my faith has recounted.

lāw da-hpākhāthā (h)ī melathī: d-b-w-rā pshīṭā (h)ī wa-b-rīrā.

My word is not one of reversals; it is a plain and clear well,

āplā ṣnīʿīn pethgāmaī: ba-d-lā mlīlīn ḥūshābaī.

nor are my words crafty, since my thoughts are not devious.

b-nesyānā gēyr yalepātāh: d-hādē ʿādhrā ṭāv men (h)ī.

For by experience I have learned that this helps more than that:

d-nesgōdh nāsh kad lā bāṣā: w-lā nʿaqev kad lā sāpaq.

that one should worship without examining, and not inquire when one is not able.

pshīṭūtēh d-shemʿōn eghbe: w-lā mlīlūtēh d-bar da-yṣān.

I have chosen the simplicity of Simon, not the eloquence of Bar Daysan.

lā yādhōʿā neqrōnānī: w-vāṣāōyā lā eshtamah.

Let them not call me a knower, nor let me be named a searcher.

nor is his death ordinary to me, by which the nations turned back from error.

lāw ḥayāvā mīth ḥlāpayn: zakāyā b-qeṭlēh parqan.

No guilty one died in our stead; the innocent one saved us by his death,

d-mā yaqīrā eshtapaʿ: w-aḥī l-gensā d-ḥayābē.

precious blood was poured out, and gave life to the race of the guilty;

un sang précieux fut répandu, et donna la vie à la race des coupables ;

ḥayv mwtā en māath: (h)ī d-īlēh pāraʿ ba-l-ḥōdh.

If one liable to death dies, he pays only his own debt,

w-en ʿal d-askel methnagadh: mānā mahne la-ḥrānē.

and if he is scourged because he erred, what benefit is that to others?

zakāyā ʿal l-bēyth d-īnā: w-zakī l-ādām ḥayāvā.

The innocent one entered the house of judgment and acquitted guilty Adam,

(n)bārā sleq la-ṣlīvā: w-pakhrāh ʿamēh la-ḥṭītā.

maḥyānā nḥeth lāh la-shyōl: wa-ʿraq māwtā men qūdmāwhī.

The Life-giver went down to Sheol, and death fled from before him,

ḥaylthānā l-qavrā ʿal (h)wā: w-tabar mūkhlē d-avdānā.

the Mighty One entered the grave, and broke the bolts of destruction;

le Puissant entra dans le tombeau, et brisa les verrous de la perdition ;

shalīṭ ʿal kul mīth da-ṣvā: wa-ḥyā tūv aykan da-b-ʿā.

Sovereign over all, he died as he willed, and lived again as he wished.

shalīṭ nā ʿal napshī emar: āp d-esvīh āp d-esīmīh.

"I have power over my own life," he said, "both to take it up and to lay it down;"

w-mārēh d-ʿālmā b-gāw paghrā: kad lā ḥāsh ethnagadh.

and the Lord of the world, in the body, was scourged while not himself suffering;

et le Seigneur du monde, dans le corps, fut flagellé sans lui-même souffrir ;

d-paghrā enōn gēyr ḥash: āp māwtā d-paghrā ʾīthāwhī.

For sufferings belong to the body, and death too belongs to the body,

w-lā ḥāshāōshā b-ḥāshōshā: b-ḥashēh l-ḥashā maḥesh lēh.

and the impassible one, in the passible, through its suffering brings suffering upon it;

et l'impassible, dans le passible, par sa souffrance lui inflige la souffrance ;

lā māyōthā b-māyōthā: b-māwtēh l-māwtā mbaṭel (h)wā.

The immortal, in the mortal, by its death was abolishing death,

qabel ḥashē b-yadh paghrēh: d-naḥe l-ʿālmā b-lā ḥashēh.

He received sufferings through his body, that he might give life to the world without its suffering,

d-ʿal zarʿēh gēyr d-avrāhām: shalīṭ māwtā yadhīʿā (h)ī.

For that death has power over the seed of Abraham is known,

wa-d-paghrā tūv māyōthā hāw: āp hādē d-lā ḥeryānā (h)ī.

and that the body too is mortal -- this too is beyond dispute;

et que le corps aussi est mortel -- cela aussi est hors de dispute ;

wa-d-napshā l-ʿal men māwtā (h)ī: lā nāsh sārēv ʿal hādē.

And that the soul is above death, no one denies this,

Et que l'âme est au-dessus de la mort, nul ne le nie,

w-da-khyānāh lā ḥāshōshā hāw: klnāsh yādaʿ ba-shrārā.

and that its nature is not subject to suffering, everyone knows this in truth.

mā dēyn da-ʿnadh ba-rnāshā: lā āmrīn d-mīth lēh paghrēh.

But when a man departs this life, they do not say, "his body has died,"

w-kad pelgēh lā ṭʿem māwtā: mīth plān tānēyn yādhōʿāwhī.

though half of him has not tasted death, his acquaintances say, "So-and-so has died";

bien que la moitié de lui n'ait pas goûté la mort, ses proches disent : « Untel est mort » ;

mshalmānāīth tānēyn lēh: l-māwtā bātar parṣōpā.

Fully do they attribute to him death, according to the person,

ʿal paghrā d-mīth ba-shrārā: w-ʿal napshā d-lā mthōm ḥeshate.

concerning the body which truly died, and concerning the soul which never suffered at all;

au sujet du corps qui est mort en vérité, et au sujet de l'âme qui n'a jamais souffert du tout ;

hākanā qabel neghdē: kyānā d-memthōm lā ḥāash.

Thus the nature that never suffers received scourgings,

these things which are not proper to his nature he received by his own will,

wa-b-ḥūbēh saybar enēyn: d-ʿal mārūtēh nethamrān.

and in his love he bore them, that they might be spoken of concerning his lordship;

et par son amour il les supporta, pour qu'on les dise de sa seigneurie ;

hālēyn da-hwaī la-zʿōrāwhī: sām enēyn ʿal parṣōpēh.

The things that befell his little ones, he set them upon his own person,

w-ḥashā d-qabel ʿal paghrēh: aykan d-īlēh lā nemnēywhī.

and the suffering he received upon his body — how shall we not count it as his own?

sāpqān hālēyn d-tanīnan: l-haymānūtā da-pshīṭē.

These things we have recounted suffice for the faith of the simple.

Turn back to your soil, O clod; do not hold forth about your Fashioner.

gīnā kyānākh lā teṭʿe: wa-l-mārē kyānē tevṣe.

O self, do not forget your nature, nor pry into the Lord of natures.

O dust, offspring of the earth, do not dispute the Offspring of the Father.

The waves passed me from one to another, and I found myself in the midst of the sea;

Les vagues m'ont porté l'une à l'autre, et je me suis trouvé au milieu de la mer ;

w-men da-nbagh bī ʿūhdānā: d-aykā ʾītaī ethgashshēth.

and when recollection sprang up in me, I groped to find where I was.

elpā hwāth lī haymānūthī: d-lā nṭabʿūnānī shūālē.

My faith became a ship for me, that questions might not sink me,

wa-b-ḥēpā ʿamāh ʿebarēth: b-shethqā ba-l-mēnāh nāḥēth.

and swiftly I crossed with her, in silence coming to rest in her harbor.
