On Faith [...]

Sur la foi [...]

haymānūtā zamentanī: d-ethbasam men tūqānēyh.

Faith invited me, that I might delight in her provisions,

ʿal pāthōrāh asmekhtanī: w-ādshē d-rūḥā sedhrat lī.

At her table she made me recline, and courses of the Spirit she laid out for me.

neqlat ʾūrḥā d-maʿlānēyh: d-shapyāīth erdē ʿamāh.

Made smooth was the path of her approaches, that I might walk with her plainly,

shvīlā trīṣā albekhtanī: d-lā ephe b-thāwshā sanyā.

A straight path she set me on, lest I stray into an ugly maze.

ʿelath ʿamāh l-āwānēyh: w-la-ʾthrā d-nāwḥā ethmaṭīth.

I entered with her into her chambers, and reached the place of rest,

wa-ḥzēyth lāh kul tūqānīn: da-mṭayvīn lāh la-zmīnēyh.

and I saw all the preparations made ready there for her guests.

ḥzēyth ʿūmrāh da-mṣbath lāh: b-shaynā w-ḥūbā w-āwyūtā.

I saw her dwelling, adorned with peace and love and concord,

w-pethghāmē da-nvīūthā: d-aykh teshwīthā mkhīkhyn lāh.

and the sayings of prophecy spread beneath her like a couch.

ḥzayth da-ḥrīpā agānāh: wa-ḥlāp ḥamrā d-mā malyā.

I saw her basin was bitter, and instead of wine it was filled with blood,

wa-ḥlāp la-ḥmā sīmā lāh: shladā meṣʿath pāthōrāh.

and instead of bread laid out, a corpse in the middle of her table.

ḥzaytēh la-d-mā w-estardhēth: w-la-shladā w-ghūnḥā aḥdanī.

I saw the blood and was terrified; at the corpse, dread seized me,

w-remzat lī d-akhōl wa-shlī: w-eshtaī shavrā w-lā tmalel.

and she signaled to me, "Eat and be still; drink, child, and say nothing."

ʿbadtanī rēshā ba-ḥlōlāh: w-d-w-kthā rāmthā yehvt lī.

She made me chief guest at her feast, and gave me a lofty place,

Elle me fit convive d'honneur à son festin, et me donna une place élevée,

w-emrath lī d-ba-ʾghrā ṭāvā: katar ṣēdaī wa-plōḥ ʿamī.

and said to me, "For a good wage, stay with me and labor at my side."

mezgat lī kāsā d-ḥūbāh: w-ḥe(n)kaī d-ībesh ethragī.

She mixed for me a cup of her love, and my dry palate craved it.

sheqlēth w-eshtīth men ʾīdyh: ḥlāp ḥamrā d-mā qadīshā.

I took it and drank from her hands — instead of wine, holy blood.

tḥēyth rēshī sāmat kenpāthāh: w-aykh la-ḥsīlā samekhtanī.

Beneath my head she placed her wings, and reclined me as one held dear,

w-qarbat lī paghrā wa-d-mā: w-emrat lī d-sav ethbasam.

and she brought me body and blood, and said to me, "Take, and delight."

leḥshat lī ʿal pāthōrā: qaṭīnāthā w-patayāthā.

She whispered to me at the table subtle words and plain,

w-qālē rḥīmē zemrat lī: da-b-qīnāthāh ethpargh.

and beloved strains she sang to me, that in her melodies I might be delighted.

et elle me chanta des accents chéris, afin que je me délecte de ses mélodies.

gareghtanī aykh da-l-shavrā: w-shageshtanī aykh yalūdhā.

She made me long, as for a child, and stirred me, as an infant,

w-aleptanī d-aykan āwdē: b-thūqānē d-sāmat qūdmaī.

and taught me how to give thanks for the provisions she set before me.

ḥāwyātanī paghrā qṭīlā: w-sāmat menēh bēyth sepwāthī.

She showed me the slain body, and placed a portion of it between my lips,

wa-qʿāt lī ḥabīvāīth: da-ḥzī mānāw d-ākēl a(n)t.

and cried out to me tenderly, "See who it is you eat!"

et me cria tendrement : « Vois qui tu manges ! »

āwḥedtanī qanyā d-rūḥā: wa-thbaʿtanī d-arme ʾīdā.

She put in my hand the reed pen of the Spirit, and required that I set my hand to it.

w-sheqleth ketabath āp āōdīth: d-hānā paghrā d-alāhā hāw.

And I took it, and wrote, and confessed: that this body is God's.

hākanā tūv āp kāsā: sheqlēth w-eshtīth ba-smākhāh.

So too, also, the cup: I took and drank as I reclined at her side.

wa-mḥānī men kāsā rēyḥā: d-hāw paghrā d-ekalēth menēh.

And from the cup there struck me a scent — of that body I had eaten.

w-(h)ī d-ethamrat ʿal paghrā: d-hānā paghrā d-alāhā hāw.

And what was said of the body — that this body is God's —

(h)ī tūv emrat ʿal kāsā: d-hānā d-mēh hāw d-maḥyānan.

the same she said again of the cup: that this is the blood of him who gives us life.

hālēyn klhēyn ḥāwyātanī: haymānūtā ba-smākhh.

All these things Faith showed me as I reclined at her side,

w-shadartanī d-epōq akhrez: shrārā w-qūshtā ba-b-rīthā.

and sent me forth to go and proclaim truth and verity to creation.

nepqath emrēth men da-ḥzayth: w-shemʿēth lī mamllā ḥrēnā.

I went out telling what I had seen, and heard another kind of talk —

d-men sagyēē methmalal: klnāsh l-w-qbal reʿyānēh.

spoken by the many, each according to his own mind.

ḥzaytēh l-ʿālmā da-mdhwadh: wa-mmalel marāḥāīth.

I saw the world in turmoil, speaking recklessly,

shbaq gēyr mamllā d-pūrqānēh: wa-mʿaqev ʿal kasyāthā.

for it had abandoned the account of his salvation, and pried into hidden things.

mīth alāhā āw lā mīth: da-mmallīn nāshā shemʿēth.

"Did God die, or did he not die?" — such talk of men I heard.

« Dieu est-il mort, ou n'est-il pas mort ? » — tel propos des hommes j'entendis.

māwtēh parqah la-b-rīthā: wa-mshalīn henōn en mīth.

His death had saved creation, yet they were asking whether he died.

ḥadh āmar lā (h)wā nāshā hāw: ḥrēnā nāshā mānē lēh.

One said, "He was not man"; another reckoned him a mere man.

w-men melē d-hānā wa-d-hāw: npal ḥeryānā ba-mṣaʿthā.

And from the words of this one and that, contention fell among them,

dāwdhūh l-arʿā ḥerḥā: ba-hpākhātā d-melayhōn.

they trampled it down to the earth in confusion, with the twists of their words.

shbaqīw da-nshabḥūn l-hāw da-praq: w-qāmw bāṣēyn d-aykanā mīth.

They gave up glorifying him who saved, and stood probing how he died.

trēyn ʿeqārē marīrē: d-īʿāw wa-sleqīw hapkāīth.

Two bitter roots sprang up and grew, twisted from the start,

wenōn da-l-ḥūh l-nāshūtā: w-armīw sedaqē b-ʿēdātā.

and these vexed mankind, and cast rifts into the churches.

nesṭōrīōs w-ʾūṭīkē: henōn dāwdhūh l-mashmaʿthā.

Nestorius and Eutyches — these trampled underfoot the true teaching,

elā ʾītāwhī alāhā: mītē aykan maḥe (h)wā.

Unless he was God, how did he give life to the dead?

w-elā da-hwā ba-rnāshā: l-qavrā aykan ʿāal (h)wā.

And unless he became man, how did he enter the tomb?

ātwātēh mkarān l-aynā: d-lā māwdē bēh d-alāhā hāw.

His signs put to shame the one who does not confess that he is God,

w-mūkākēh bāsar l-aynā: d-ṭālam lēh d-lā hwā nāshā.

and his lowliness rebukes the one who denies that he became man.

wa-rkev ʿal ʿīlā shīṭā: w-ezdayaḥ men īlūdē.

He rode on a lowly colt, and was hailed by children.

aynā d-āmar d-lā ʾītāwhī: alāhā d-men alāhā.

He who says that he is not God from God —

Celui qui dit qu'il n'est pas Dieu né de Dieu —

shemshā b-apāwhī rāq lēh: d-ʿal nāshā lā ḥāshēkh (h)wā.

the sun spits in his face, for it would not have darkened for a mere man.

w-aynā d-āmar d-lā tle (h)wā: ʿal gāghūltā b-hadāmē.

And he who says that he did not hang bodily on Golgotha —

rūmḥā d-da-pnēh bāsrā lēh: da-b-gabā d-besrā ʿevrat.

the lance that pierced his side rebukes him, for it passed through a side of flesh.

lāw paghrā d-lāw alāhā hāw: tle (h)wā b-qaysā da-ṣlīvā.

Not a body that was not God's hung on the wood of the cross,

w-lā alāhā d-lā gūshmā: ḥāsh (h)wā ʿal gāghūltā.

nor was it God without a body who suffered on Golgotha.

ḥashē w-kēbē w-maḥwāthā: alāhā ba-pgar saybar.

Sufferings, pains, and blows — God endured them in the body,

w-sāhdīn lan mayā wa-d-mā: da-rdāw menēh ʿal qaysā.

and water and blood testify to us, which flowed from him upon the wood.

elūlā mīth ba-khyānan: may menēh lā ethāw.

Unless he died in our nature, water would not have come from him,

w-elā ḥaī (h)wā b-ʾīthūth: d-mā menēh lā rādē (h)wā.

and unless he was living in his being, blood would not have flowed from him.

w-men mīthā d-mā lā nāpēq: āplā men ḥayā mayā.

For from a dead man blood does not come out, nor from a living one, water;

Car d'un mort le sang ne sort pas, ni d'un vivant, l'eau ;

māran dēyn ḥaī (h)wā kad mīth: may wa-d-mā rdāw menēh.

but our Lord was living while dead — water and blood flowed from him.

lāw men rūḥā rdāw mayā: āw men paghrā d-mā nbaʿ (h)wā.

Not from the spirit did water flow, nor from the body did blood spring,

men alāhā da-mgasham: d-mā w-may rdāw shawyāīth.

but from God incarnate, blood and water flowed together.

haymānūtāh d-ba(r)th nūhrā: d-lā ʿūqāv hākan ʾītēyh.

The faith of the daughter of light is thus without complication:

d-men avā w-men ba(r)th nāshā: ḥadh yādhʿā lēh l-īḥīdhā.

that from the Father and from the daughter of man, it knows the Only-Begotten to be one.

ḥadh b-rā gmīrā da-mshamlaī: men avā āp men maryam.

One perfect Son, complete, from the Father and also from Mary;

Un seul Fils parfait, accompli, du Père et aussi de Marie ;

avā yaldēh alāhā: wa-b-thūltā aykh ba-rnāshā.

the Father begot him as God, and the virgin, as man.

men avā w-men ba(r)th nāshā: ḥadh hāw ba-l-ḥōdh d-lā pūlāgh.

From the Father and from the daughter of man, he is one alone, without division;

Du Père et de la fille de l'homme, il est un seul, sans division ;

gmīr klēh b-alāhūtēh: wa-ghmīr klēh b-nāshūtēh.

complete wholly in his divinity, and complete wholly in his humanity,

mekā w-mekā methhayman: ḥadh yaldā yḥīdāyā.

from here and from there, he is believed one, an only-begotten offspring.

d'ici et de là, il est cru un, un rejeton unique.

hāw d-īlīdh (h)wā men avā: rūḥānāīth d-lā paghrā.

He who was begotten of the Father spiritually, without a body,

lēh yeldat paghrānāīth: emā b-thūltā b-tedhmūrtā.

him did the virgin mother bear bodily, in wonder.

en teṭlōm alāhūtēh: avā mbagan men rāwmā.

If you deny his divinity, the Father cries out from on high,

w-en lā tāwdē b-nāshūtēh: b-thūltā rāghzā b-ghāw ʿūmqā.

and if you do not confess his humanity, the virgin is angered from the depths.

lēh emar avā b-rāshīth: neʿbedh nāshā ba-d-mūtan.

To him the Father said in the beginning, "Let us make man in our likeness";

À lui le Père dit au commencement : « Faisons l'homme à notre ressemblance » ;

w-bēh ḥeshat ṭūvānīthā: kad yāldā lēh b-āpartā.

and in him the Blessed One travailed, when she bore him in Ephrathah.

hāw d-eshtadar men avā: hāw ethīledh men karsā.

He who was sent from the Father, he was born from the womb,

w-hāw d-ethīledh men karsā: hāw ettlī ʿal gāghūltā.

and he who was born from the womb, he was hung on Golgotha.

shūvhārāh d-ʿēdtā hānāw: d-alāhā mīth ba-zqīpā.

This is the Church's glory: that God died on the cross,

lāw ba-khyānā d-ʾīthūtēh: elā b-paghrā d-ʾnāshūtan

not in the nature of his being, but in the body of our humanity,

alāhā gēyr ba-khyānēh: d-neṭʿam māwtā lā maṣyā.

for God, in his nature, cannot taste death;

car Dieu, dans sa nature, ne peut goûter la mort ;

w-da-ṣvā da-nmūth ethgasham: wa-ṭʿem māwtā b-ṣvyānēh.

but he who willed to die became incarnate, and tasted death by his own will.

w-lā māwtā methqarav (h)wā: ṣēydh alāhā d-lā paghrā.

And death would not have drawn near to God without a body,

d-elū lā ḥzāyhī da-mgasham: mestaradh (h)wā d-neqrōv lēh.

for if it had not seen him incarnate, it would have shrunk back from approaching him.

maḥram aynā da-mpalegh: alāhūtā men paghrā.

Accursed is he who divides the divinity from the body.

nhaymen bēh d-lā pūlāgā: aykanā d-haymenīw da-mkē.

let us believe in him without division, just as the sleeping ones believed.

elūlā d-ashrūhī mītē: d-alāhā hāw w-bar alāhā.

Unless the dead had confirmed him, that he is God and Son of God —

lā ḥāēyn (h)wāw ba-ḥzātēh: kad ettaḥtī ṣēdayhōn.

They would not have lived by the sight of him, had he come down to them;

Ils n'auraient pas vécu à sa vue, s'il était descendu vers eux ;

hā gle shrārā aykh shemshā: ṣdāwhī nerhaṭ ḥabīvaī.

behold, the truth is revealed like the sun — let us run to him, my beloved,

d-ṭāv men ḥūbā da-plīgē: ba-da-mūth ṣāwtā d-sharīrē.

for better than the love of the divided is the obedience of the truthful.

narpe ḥeshkā l-bar ḥeshkā: wa-b-nūhrā neḥlōṭ napshan.

Let us leave darkness to the child of darkness, and mingle our soul with light,

d-lā nekhpōr ban mā d-ātē: hāw rabā d-rāʿāwāthā.

lest he deny us when he comes, the great one of shepherds.

nelbōkh ʾūrḥā da-thrīṣē: w-shapyāīth nerdē b-ghāwāh.

Let us take the way of the upright, and walk smoothly within it,

d-lāwānā d-men īmīnēh: d-bar alāhā tmanaʿ lan.

that it may bring us to the chamber at the right hand of the Son of God.

lā nhe ḥavrē l-rashīʿē: ʾūṭīkē w-nesṭōrīōs.

Let us not be companions of the wicked, Eutyches and Nestorius;

Ne soyons pas compagnons des impies, Eutychès et Nestorius ;

lā nerḥam lan yūlpānhōn: d-sam māwtā kse b-melayhōn.

let us not love their teaching, for deadly poison is hidden in their words.

aynā d-rāḥēm la-shrārā: men gavyā tōmā nēlap.

Whoever loves the truth, let him learn from Thomas the chosen,

d-kad gāsh da-pnēh da-b-rā: qʿā lēh d-a(n)t hāw mārī w-alāhī.

who, when he touched the side of the Son, cried out to him, "You are my Lord and my God."

talmīdē ḥnan da-shrārā: lā nāsh narpe tūlmādēh.

We are disciples of the truth; let no one abandon his discipleship;

Nous sommes disciples de la vérité ; que nul n'abandonne son discipulat ;

l-ʾūrḥā da-shlīḥē ʿalnan: b-ʿeqvāthhōn terdē reghlan.

we have entered the way of the apostles — in their footsteps let our foot walk.

b-rā lā nezʿar men d-ʾīthwhī: wāylēh l-aynā d-mazʿar lēh.

Let the Son not be diminished from what he is; woe to him who diminishes him.

hāw b-rabūtēh methghāe: wa-d-vāṣ lēh meshtanaq.

He exults in his greatness, and whoever searches into it is tormented;

Il exulte dans sa grandeur, et quiconque la sonde est tourmenté ;

lā men shūvḥā methītar: w-lā ba-b-ṣāthā methbaṣar.

he is not increased by glory, nor diminished by inquiry,

d-aykh d-ʾīthāwhī hākan ʾīthwhī: ṭūv la-d-raḥmēh da-khyāīth.

for as he is, so he is; blessed is he who loves him purely.

mā d-methgalyā mēthīthākh: alāhā da-hwā nāshā.

When your coming is revealed, O God who became man,

Quand ta venue sera révélée, ô Dieu qui es devenu homme,

ʾūṭīkē w-nesṭōrīōs: henōn nshanōn l-ghēhanā.

Eutyches and Nestorius will be driven away to Gehenna,

w-tamān nṭapōn la-ḥdhādē: wāyā b-ḥeshkā ba-rāyā.

and there they will spit at one another — woe! — in the outer darkness,

w-nerqūn b-apē da-ḥdhādē: ʿal d-amraḥw ʿal rabūtēh.

and they will spit in one another's faces, because they were insolent toward his majesty.
