ṣvūtā d-hāwyā ba-ḥnānēh: hwyū b-ʾīdhāwhī sāʿar lāh.

Whatever comes to pass through his mercy, he himself works with his own hands;

Ce qui arrive par sa compassion, c'est lui-même qui l'accomplit de ses mains ;

w-aydā d-shavṭā (h)ī da-mḥōtā: b-ʾīdā d-ʿabdē mayte lāh.

and whatever is a rod of chastisement, he brings by the hand of servants.

saybar shavṭēh ḥalāshā: d-bēh yālap a(n)t ḥekmātēh.

Bear his gentle rod, by which you learn his wisdom,

w-bēh qārbā w-methḥazyā lākh: b-ṭīlūtēh d-ʿal tarbītākh.

for by it his care for your upbringing draws near and is shown to you.

īdaʿthā d-alāhūtā: ethgahnat ʿal beryāthā.

The knowledge of the Godhead bowed down over creation,

d-tesav ḥāwrā w-dhemwātā: la-shkhḥtā da-b-naynāshā.

that it might take on likeness and forms, for the understanding of mankind.

ḥekhmthā mārath ḥermāthā: neḥtat ṭārat ʿal ʿesbā.

Wisdom, mistress of hidden things, came down and dwelt upon a plant,

w-ba-predatā d-ḥardlā ṣārat: taḥwīthā ʿal malkūtā.

and in the mustard grain it painted a likeness of the kingdom.

en tnē nā āp enā: melthā d-ʿālmā l-benyānā.

If I too should tell a tale of the world, for edification,

lā tgaḥekh bī talmīdā: da-l-benyānākh emarth.

do not laugh at me, disciple, for I spoke it for your edification.

syā mashdē hāw reʿyānēh: w-ʿal ṣevwāthā ṣāyāthā.

The physician casts his mind even upon filthy things,

w-marshep madʿēh ʿal ʿaprā: d-āsyūtā l-shūḥnā nkanesh.

and lets his understanding creep over dust, that he may gather healing for the sore.

āp malpānā hākanā: aykh āsyā pṭīn da-nʿadar.

The teacher too, likewise, is quick as a physician to help,

w-methḥashaḥ hāw b-kul yadaʿān: d-neshkaḥ nāwtar l-shāmōʿē.

and he makes use of every kind of knowledge, that he may find profit for his hearers.

ḥekhmath āsyā lā gāʿṣā: men ndhīdhūtā d-ʿeqārē.

The physician's wisdom does not shrink from the foulness of roots,

ṭāyārā (h)ī āp ṣydh saryūtā: d-tarwaḥ napshā d-alīṣā.

it ventures out even to what is rotten, that the soul of the afflicted may find relief.

āp malpānā mṭīr hāw: tarʿītēh ʿal kul sharbaīn.

The teacher too is watchful, his mind bent upon every kind of matter,

w-ṭāʿēm qālē nūkhrāyē: d-netal menhōn l-w-bāvā.

and he tastes foreign words, that he may give from them encouragement.

l-pōēyṭā d-ʿālmā ṣātth: kad mwrev la-b-thūlūtā.

I listened to the poet of the world, as he extolled virginity,

wa-ḥdhīth d-āp ʿal ba-rāyē: rabā gvīthā da-b-thūlē.

and I rejoiced that even among outsiders, great is the chosen state of virgins.

la-ʿlaymā ḥadh shāmaʿ (h)wyth: b-ḥadh men yāwm kad zāmar.

I was listening to a young man, one day, as he sang,

men dēyn lam sathranī wa-b-nānī: wa-b-thūlā mendrēsh ʿavdanī.

'Whoever, it is said, has torn me down and rebuilt me, has made me a virgin once more.'

w-emrēth lēh d-hādē b-ʿāthākh: l-wāth īshōʿ hāw meshtakhḥā.

And I said to him, this request of yours is found with Jesus;

Et je lui dis : cette demande que tu fais se trouve auprès de Jésus ;

tā l-wāth īshōʿ w-nehwe lākh: aykh m da-shel sepwāthāk

come to Jesus, and it shall be for you as your lips have asked.

ḥārēth bēh d-āp hāw ʿlaymā: rāḥēm hāw la-b-thūlūthā.

I saw in him that even that young man loved virginity,

d-pūrshānā (h)ī myatrā b-arʿā: w-rēshāyā āp ba-shmayā.

for it is a state more excellent on earth, and foremost also in heaven.

men hānā qālā d-sheʿyā: pērā nakhpā qeṭpēth lākh.

From this song of amusement I have plucked for you a chaste fruit,

aykh d-men ʿeqārē ṣāē: mayte āsyā ḥūlmānā.

just as from foul roots the physician brings healing.

hānā klīlā gdalīw āwsheṭīw: mzāwgē l-rēshā da-b-thūlē.

This crown a paired couple wove and held out, for the head of virgins,

d-d-īlhōn (h)ī rēshānūtā: b-āghōnā da-b-thūlūtā.

for theirs is the primacy, in the contest of virginity.

l-hāw kēyth da-zmar nāpaq lēh: pāsharnā ʿal shealātēh.

To him, then, who sang, I went forth to resolve his question,

d-lā ʾīth b-ʿālmā nāsh da-mṣe: d-nestōr nāshā wa-d-nevne.

that there is no man in the world able, to tear down a man and build him anew.

ḥadh hāw d-sātar wa-d-vānē: wa-mḥadhth la-b-naynāshā.

One alone tears down and builds, and renews mankind,

mshīḥā da-b-maʿmōdītēh: ʿābēdh b-thūlē men sābē.

Christ, who by his baptism makes virgins out of the aged.

tāw l-wātēh ʾō nāshā: d-nestōrkhōn wa-d-nevnēykhōn.

Come to him, O mankind, that he may tear you down and build you up;

Venez à lui, ô hommes, pour qu'il vous détruise et vous rebâtisse ;

tāw ḥōthw qabelw ba-mʿīnēh: ḥadhthūthkhōn wa-b-thūlaykōn.

come, go down, receive at his spring your renewal and your virginity.

w-aynā da-zmīrā (h)wāth lēh: hādē zmīrtā da-ʿlaymē.

As for him for whom this song of the young men was made,

w-lā sedrat lēh ba-ʿvādh: d-nehwe b-thūlā aykh da-shel.

it did not command him, in deed, to become a virgin as he had asked.

tā l-wāth hāw da-d-l-īlā lēh: d-nestōr nevne wa-nḥadhth.

Come to him for whom it is easy, to tear down, build up, and renew,

wa-nshaḥlep la-b-naynāshā: men saybūtā l-ṭalyūtā.

and to change mankind, from old age to youth.

lāw kad ṭām hadāmē: ʿābēdh b-thwlē men d-afrīw.

Not by testing the body's members does he make virgins of those who have already borne fruit,

elā kad ṭām napshā: b-shūwdāyā d-qadīshūtā.

but by testing the soul, in the promise of holiness.

aykh ʿaynā d-pethḥat wa-ṭpāt: w-lā methrashyā d-ethpathḥat.

Like an eye that opened and closed, and it is not remembered that it opened,

hākanā (h)ī āp b-ʿīlūtā: mā d-pānyā l-qadīshūthā.

so also is a wedded woman, when she returns to holiness.

lā methbaṣrā d-ethbaʿlat: lā methrashyā d-ezdāwgat.

She is not diminished for having been married; it is not remembered that she was joined in marriage;

Elle n'est pas diminuée pour avoir été prise en mariage ; on ne se souvient pas qu'elle fut unie en mariage ;

mḥatmā lāh haymānūtā: wa-mḥadtā bāh b-thūlūtā.

faith seals her, and virginity is renewed in her.

marā d-da-hvā en nēḥōdh: hedyōṭā lā bānē bēh.

āplā enā la-zmārā: swe (h)wēyth d-melathī esōkh bēh.

Neither did I, out of desire for the song, wish to blend my speech with it,

aykh da-l-belʿam eḥadatēh: d-ʾḥadē bēh b-thūlūtā.

as it seized Balaam — virginity seized me by it.

men dēyn lam sathranī wa-b-nānī: wa-b-thūlā mendrēsh ʿavdanī.

'Whoever, it is said, has torn me down and rebuilt me, has made me a virgin once more,'

hānā reʿyānā ʾīt hāw: āp l-ḥashīshē b-kul eskēym.

this thought exists, even among the wretched, in every guise —

ap aynā da-b-saybūtā: b-pūrshānā l-rūshmā neqrōv.

even one who in old age, with discernment, draws near to the seal,

w-neshtāwḥar ṣēydh zūwāghā: w-hāydēyn nēte l-thūlmādā.

and holds back from marriage, and then comes to discipleship.

mā d-ḥāzē gūdā d-nakpē: w-ethbaqī āp ba-b-thūlē.

When he sees the company of the chaste, and looks also upon virgins,

w-estakal mā d-ethqadash: da-b-thūlūtā rēshāyā (h)ī.

and understands, once sanctified, that virginity is the foremost state,

hāydēyn āp hāw shāqēl lēh: reʿyānā l-mēmar hākan.

then he too takes up, the thought, to say thus:

men dēyn lam sathranī wa-b-nānī: wa-b-thūlā mendrēsh ʿavdanī.

'Whoever, it is said, has torn me down and rebuilt me, has made me a virgin once more,'

d-erhaṭ (h)wēyth ba-b-thūlūtā: w-eshwe l-da-rgāh ʿelāyā.

that I might run in virginity, and attain to its high rank.

wa-b-hānā ḥashā meshkaḥ: d-neqne melthā myatartā.

And in this longing he is able, to acquire an excellent word,

w-(h)ī da-ʿbartēh ʿam zavnāh: ba-thwāth napshā meshkaḥ lāh.

and that which passed him by with its season, he finds again through repentance,

w-(h)ī d-āwbedh ṣēydh ṭalyūtā: qānē lāh men saybūtā.

and that which he lost in youth, he gains from old age.

sagyēē b-naī reʿyānē: ʾīth lāh l-hādē d-ezdamrat.

Many are the offspring of thought, that this song, once sung, has given rise to —

āp ba-qyāmā qadīshā: āp b-hāw gabā d-zūwāghā.

both in the holy covenant, and in that other state of marriage.

āp l-avīlē en nehwe: pāwshā qalīl b-ʿamlayhōn.

Also to mourners, should there come, a little respite in their labors,

āw men yūqrā d-saybūtā: nethbaṣrūn d-w-bārayhōn.

or from the weight of old age, their toil be lessened,

hāydēyn methalṣīn l-meshal: ḥlāp māwtā ḥēyl ṭalyūtā.

then they are compelled to ask, instead of death, the strength of youth,

d-maḥvīn enōn yūthrānē: d-kēnūtā ṭāv men māwtā.

for the gains of righteousness are dearer to them than death.

ḥakīmā b-reghlēh kātav: ṭāv men ʾīdā d-hedyōṭā.

A wise man writes with his foot, better than the fool writes with his hand,

wa-b-shentēh mzīʿ ḥadthāthā: aykh da-b-ʿamlā d-qeryānā.

and in his sleep he stirs up new things, as though by the labor of reading.

mlīlā (h)ī ʾīdēh d-yādhōʿā: ṭāv men pūmā d-hedhyōṭā.

Eloquent is the hand of a man of knowledge, better than the mouth of a fool,

w-ṭāv men leshānēh d-sakhlā: b-remzēh mmalel ḥakīmā.

and better than the tongue of the foolish, the wise man speaks by his nod.

āp l-ʾīdēh melthā ʾīth lāh: wa-l-ʿaynēh āp tūrgāmā.

Even to his hand belongs speech, and to his eye also, interpretation;

Même à sa main appartient la parole, et à son œil aussi, l'interprétation ;

b-hadāmē da-d-lā melthā: meltēh rāhṭā wa-mpīsā.

in members that have no speech, his word runs and persuades.

da-mīkhūtēh nahīrā (h)ī: men ʿīrūtā da-ḥrānē.

His sleep is brighter, than the wakefulness of others,

d-mā da-d-mekh ʿāal māēsh: matlē ksayā da-b-seprē.

for when he sleeps he goes in and gathers, the hidden parables that are in books.

men da-rdē b-ʾīdēh mmalel: b-remzēh mpīs aykh da-b-pūmā.

Whoever is trained speaks with his hand, and persuades with his nod as with his mouth,

wa-b-hadāmā d-lā mmalel: melthā mamllā d-īdaʿthā.

and in a member that does not speak, the word of knowledge speaks.

hākanā b-qāl pōēyṭā: b-zalīlā wa-b-lā nakhpā.

So too in the voice of the poet, in the frivolous and shameless,

eshkrḥat d-tezmar īdaʿthā: yūlpānā d-qadīshūtā.

knowledge found a way to sing, the teaching of holiness.

lā mthōm dāmkh ḥakīmā: w-aykh d-lā dāmkh lā māath.

The wise man never sleeps, and as one who does not sleep he does not die;

Jamais le sage ne dort, et comme il ne dort pas, il ne meurt pas ;

ʿīr hāw b-shentēh w-lā shālē: w-ḥaī hāw b-māwtēh w-lā bāṭal.

he is awake in his sleep, and does not rest, and alive in his death, and does not cease.

ʿal saklē shākanā shenthā: d-layt l-hōn zāwʿē da-b-ʿāthā.

Sleep dwells upon fools, for they have no stirrings of inquiry,

ʿal ḥakīmē lā shākatā: d-layt l-hōn shelyā b-yūlpānā.

but upon the wise it does not dwell, for they have no rest from learning.

madʿēh d-saklā w-ḥasīrā: men paghrēh l-d-ūkh lā nāpēq.

The mind of the fool, and of the deficient, does not go out from his body to any place;

L'intelligence de l'insensé et du déficient, ne sort de son corps vers aucun lieu ;

mā da-mṭāt shenthā l-paghrēh: hwā lēh mīthā d-lā zāwʿē.

when sleep reaches his body, he becomes for himself a corpse without motion.

layt menēh wa-l-bar medem: d-ʿam paghrēh d-mekhw ḥūshāvāwhī.

Nothing exists beyond him, for with his body his thoughts too have gone to sleep,

l-ḥakīmā dēyn lā ṣāyādā: da-mkūtā aykh da-l-sakhlā.

but for the wise man sleep does not lie in wait, as it does for the fool.

ʿadh methkanshā ydaʿtēh: men beryāthā neghhat lāh.

While his knowledge is being gathered in, from creatures it shines forth for him,

w-ʿadh methḥamlīn ʿenyānāwhī: men penyāthā nehrat lāh.

and while his discourses are being brought together, from every region it grows bright for him.

d-nehpōkh l-esṭūkhsē mārʿē: d-ṭalyūtā d-pāgat menēh.

that he might turn back the failing elements, of the youth that had slipped from him —

men dēyēn lam sathranī wa-b-nanī: wa-b-thūlā mendrēsh ʿavdanī.

'whoever, it is said, has torn me down and rebuilt me, has made me a virgin once more' —

nūrā d-ṭalyūtēh deʿkath: wa-da-tethgāwzal shāl (h)wā

the fire of his youth had gone out, yet was he asking that it be kindled again?

ḥaylēh qadhmā bāʿē (h)wā: lā d-neplōḥ bēh kēnūtā.

His former strength he was seeking, not that righteousness might labor by it,

elā d-nethne wa-nshamesh: rghīghāthā da-praḥ menēh.

but that he might renew and give service to, the desires that had flown from him.

b-meltēh ḥzēytēh l-reʿyānēh: w-qālēh aksēh b-gāw edhnaī.

By his word I perceived his intent, and his own voice condemned him in my ears,

d-ba-srīqūtā tenyānūth: methyaav (h)wā d-netdabar.

for in emptiness a second time, he longed to be led.

ba-ʿlaymē ḥar (h)wā d-ʿīrīn: paghrayhōn la-rghygāthā.

He looked upon young men whose bodies were alert, to desires,

b-hādē ʾttzīʿ wa-shel (h)wā: yāwmāthā da-b-thūlūtēh.

by this he was stirred, and he asked for, the days of his virginity.

tayāvā dēyn mā d-shāqēl: da-b-hādh melthā nethḥashaḥ.

But a penitent, when he takes up, this word to make use of,

ʿal ḥaylēh b-w-khrā nāhēgh: d-lā (h)wā l-mārā rēshīthā.

He broods over his firstling strength, that was not given as firstfruits to its Lord,

mā da-b-ʿā b-ʿūthqēh da-nṣūm: w-layt bēh ḥaylā ba-d-sāvā hāw.

when in his frailty he desires to fast, and there is no strength in him, being old,

mā d-ʿīr b-ḥūbā reʿyānēh: wa-b-ṣīr ḥaylā b-hadāmāwhī.

When his mind is awake in love, but strength is diminished in his limbs,

w-vāʿē d-neʿbedh lēh zwādē: w-ethkarī lēh ʿedānā.

and he wishes to make provision for himself, but the time has grown short for him,

d-ʿalīw men bāthrēh la-b-rīthā: w-yatīr menēh ezdadaqw.

who came after him into the world, and were justified more than he.

d-tarʿīthā mḥapṭā men l-ghāw: w-ʿānyā men l-bar ṭalyūtā.

For the mind is roused from within, but youth, without, is spent,

da-praq lēh ḥaylēh menēh: b-shedhlā d-ḥāwā w-ethbaṣar.

for his strength was cut off from him by the guile of Eve, and it was diminished.

men tamān mshare l-mevʿā: aykh tāwrā ḥaylēh w-āmar.

From there he begins to seek his strength, like an ox, and says,

men dēyn kaī sathranī wa-b-nānī: wa-b-thūlā mendrēsh ʿavdanī.

'Who then has covered me and built me up, and made me a virgin once more?'

« Qui donc m'a couvert et m'a bâti, et m'a fait de nouveau vierge ? »

b-hānā dēyn ḥashā da-qne: meshtāwtap ʿam rāhōṭē.

But in this passion which he holds, he shares with the runners,

w-hāwē ḥavrā ba-thwātēh: la-b-thūlē wa-l-qadīshē.

and becomes, in his contrition, a companion to the virgins and the saints.

Before your times grow short, young man, prepare provisions for yourself,

ʿadh ʿānēyn lākh hadāmaīkh: ʿbedh lākh athrā b-malkūtā.

while your limbs still answer you, make yourself a place in the kingdom.

ʿadh ʿādhrā lākh ṭalyūtā: gdhōl lāh klīlā l-saybūtākh.

While youth still helps you, weave a crown for your old age,

The harsh region of your course, cast it behind you while you are still awake,

āwānā d-shaynā w-nāwḥā: arpā l-zavnā d-saybūtākh.

d-mā d-layt ʿamlē l-ṭalyūthā: tāʿshā w-lāyā saybūthā.

For when youth leaves no labors done, old age toils and grows weary,

b-shūqē dāmkīn ḥādhōrē: d-layt ʿūthrā layt ʿīrūthā.

In the streets sleep the wanderers, who have no wealth and so have no watchfulness,

shāhrīn ḥērē b-qayṭōnē: da-l-ghzā l-we sūrādā.

the well-born lie awake in their chambers, for dread attends treasure.

ʿal ʿaprā mashkbā nīḥā: w-ʿal āmelē ṭūrāpā.

Upon the dust is a restful bed, but upon soft couches, torment,

qne klmedem ʿatīrā: w-layt lēh nyāḥā d-meskhnā.

The rich man possesses everything, yet has not the poor man's rest.

ḥādhōrā dāmēkh wa-thkhīl: d-marīdh hāw men gayāsē.

The wanderer sleeps in confidence, for he is safe from robbers,

pārdā shentēh w-metṭarap: d-shūrtāḥā mzīʿ qanāyāwhī.

His sleep flees and he is troubled, for prosperity disturbs its owners,

qārē l-wātēh ʿīrūtā: d-teṭar manyā d-ītar lēh.

it calls watchfulness to itself, to guard the sum that is left to it.

A vigilance he had not yesterday, today he gains, and does not sleep,

and at every moment he casts out his hand and gropes for his purse, to see if it still stands.

wa-b-kul maṭartēh d-lelyā: dāḥēl hāw men taḥlūṣā.

and through every watch of the night he is afraid of violent seizure,

wa-ʿdamā d-ṣaprā nedhnaḥ: mrīs hāw lebēh ba-shkhāḥtēh.

and until morning dawns, his heart is troubled over what he has found.

men karsā ba-rthā gūshmā (h)ī: w-men shāwpā napshānīthā.

From the womb the egg has body, and from its resting, a living soul.

ḥnan men karsā napshānē: w-men mʿīn ḥayē rūḥānē.

We, from the womb, are ensouled beings; and from the spring of life, spiritual beings.

ḥrēnā hāw yaldā d-men karsā: wa-ḥrēnā d-men rūḥāpā.

Other is the birth that is from the womb, and other, that which is from hovering,

yaldā d-men karsā ba-rthā hāw: d-la-ʾykā d-ʿamīq methnakhre.

The birth from the womb belongs to the egg, which grows a stranger to the deep place.

w-māwlādā d-men gāw may: l-athrā da-l-ʿal methʿale.

but the birth that is from the water rises up to the place above.

en māwlādan d-men karsā: l-arʿā l-meḥath nātaʿ lan.

If our birth, which is from the womb, inclines us to descend to earth,

b-rūḥāpā qānāyā ba-rtā: gepē l-mepraḥ men ʿūmqā.

through hovering the egg gains wings, to fly up from the depth,

wa-b-rūḥāpā hāwēyn lan: evrē d-nepraḥ la-shmayā.

so through hovering there come to be for us wings, that we may fly to heaven.

karsā b-arʿā shādhyā lan: l-ʿūmqā l-meḥath ṣālyā lan.

The womb casts us down upon the earth, inclining us to descend to the depth,

maʿmōdhīthā mhīrāīth: l-bēyth malakē mʿalyā lan.

but baptism, swiftly, raises us up to the house of the angels.

reghshē d-men karsā ḥrānē: wa-ḥrānē d-men gāw ba-rthā.

Other are the senses that are from the womb, and other, those from within the egg,

ṣūrtā d-men eman shīṭā: wa-thhīrā d-maʿmōdīthā.

contemptible is the form that comes from our mother, and wondrous, that of baptism.

māwlādā da-thrēyn rabū: d-bēh ṭūvānā āwledh lan.

Great is the second birth, in which the Blessed One has given us birth,

w-rtā d-mendrēsh tedhmūrtā (h)ī: d-vāh malpānā ṣāar lan.

and the egg is once more a wonder, in which the Teacher forms us anew.

pshīṭ rūkāvā d-men karsā: b-ba-rtā d-yāldā pāraḥthā.

Simple is the composition from the womb, in the egg that the bird lays,

b-shāwpā mettṣīrīn evrēyh: w-methpalghīn lāh hadāmē.

in its resting, its limbs are formed, and members are apportioned to it.

klēh shūprā d-pāraḥthā: men rūḥāpā metrakav.

All the beauty of the bird is composed through hovering,

men karsā dēyn d-lā napshā: wa-d-lā ṣūrtā methyaldā.

but from the womb it is born without soul and without form.

b-hadāmē klhōn ʿaynā: qadīmā (h)ī w-(h)ī mettṣīrā.

Among all the limbs, the eye comes first, and it is the first to be shaped,

n āp d-nāshā hākanā (h)ī: rab hāw rāzā wa-mʿalaī.

If it is thus also for man, great and exalted is the mystery,

bāvthā (h)ī mettṣīrā l-w-qdam: w-vāthrāh klhōn hadāmē.

the pupil is formed first, and after it, all the limbs.

nūhrā b-rāshīth methbre bāh: b-pāraḥthā qdām kul hadām.

Light, in the beginning, is created in it — in the bird, before every other limb,

aykh da-b-rāshīth bārōyā: nūhrā b-rā ba-ghshōm klā.

as, in the beginning, the Creator created light within the whole of creation,

hākanā w-ʿaynā mbakrā: b-ghūshmā d-yaldā d-pāraḥtā.

so also the eye comes first in the body of the bird's offspring.

men qdhām klhōn tūqānē: b-gāw ʿālmā nūhrā rēshāī.

Before all the works of creation, within the world, light was first,

w-vāvthā d-ʿaynā b-parūghā: mānā d-nūhrā methqadam.

and the pupil of the eye, in the chick — the vessel of light — comes first.

men qdām kul hadām ʿaynā: mānā d-nūhrā mettaqan.

before every other limb, the eye — the vessel of light — is prepared.

bēyth āwānā d-zalīqē: w-āpadhnā mqablath ṣmḥē.

a chamber for rays, and a mansion receiving beams of light.

qdām reghlā hāwyā ʿaynā: aykh nūhrā qdām halākhā.

The eye goes before the foot, like light before the walker,

malāḥā wa-mdabrānā: d-hādē elap hadāmē.

the pilot and guide of this ship of limbs.

shenē hadāmē ḥrāyē: yāʿāyān b-nāshā bātarken.

The other, later limbs lie dormant, and are of use to a person afterward,

d-meṭul karsā methbaryan: maīnāīth methyahbān.

for they are created for the sake of the womb, and are given gradually.

lā yāʿyān ʿam kul hadām: da-l-ʿamlā srīqā ʿthīdān.

They are not useful together with every limb, for they are destined for empty toil,

mshākhāīt hāw methʿabdān: b-ḥarthā d-khlhōn hadāmē.

in due succession they are made, at the completion of all the other limbs.

ʿaynā dēyn da-myaqartā (h)ī: (h)ī mettṣīrā b-rēshīthā.

But the eye, since it is honored, is the one formed at the beginning,

w-men ba-rthā mṣayt yālap a(n)t: d-vāvtā l-w-qdam ṣīrā bāh

and from the egg, if you listen carefully, you learn that the pupil is formed in it first,

upon the water and the yolk of the egg the pupil of the eye is depicted.

shrāghā d-hadāmē klhōn: mettsīm qadhmā b-pāraḥthā.

The lamp of all the limbs is set first in the bird,

w-hāydēyn methparash shāql: kul hadāmā la-pnītēh.

and then, distinctly, each limb takes its own place.

d-māt ba-rtā l-maʿmōdhītā: da-b-rūḥāpā āwledtan.

for the daughter is like unto baptism, which by its brooding gave us birth,

w-ethyatar bāh ṣūrātan: w-vāh hāw l-medem etaynan.

and by it our forms were made more excellent, and by it we came to be something.

mendrēsh lam mḥabel nā l-khōn: d-ēṣūr b-khōn ṣlem qadīshā.

"Again," as it is said, "I mar you, that I may form in you the holy image;

« De nouveau, dit-il, je vous détruis, afin de former en vous l'image sainte ;

rab hāw wa-myatar yaldā: d-rūḥāpā men da-b-karsā.

greater and more excellent is the birth of brooding than that of the womb."

akhmā d-ḥasīrā ba-rthā: men neshrā d-īlīdh menāh.

Just as the daughter is inferior to the eagle that begot her,

hākhwāth ḥasīrā ṣūrtā: d-hāw d-lā ʿmīdh men hāw da-ʿmīdh.

so too is the form of him who is not baptized inferior to him who is baptized.

mendrēsh hāpkīn methyaldīn: neshrē w-hāwēyn da-nṭūsūn.

Again eagles are born anew, and become able to fly,

aykh d-mendrēsh methyaldīnan: d-neqne gepē ba-ʿmādan.

just as we too are born again, that we may gain wings in our baptism.

aykh d-alpan shenē d-ḥarthā: d-mēkhūltā b-ḥarthā nerne.

As the teeth of old age have taught us, that in the end we should think of food,

w-ʿaynā d-qadmat ba-hwāyāh: b-ʾūrḥā traṣtanī d-nethpalaṭ.

so the eye that was first in its being guided us on the way, that we might escape.

āp mūshē b-masqā da-thrēyn: da-l-ṭūr sīnaī ezdahī.

Moses too, at the second ascent, was made radiant for Mount Sinai,

d-ʾītāwhī rāzā d-zūhāyā: d-hān māwlādā tenyānā.

for this is the symbol of the radiance of this second birth.

shqal l-w-ḥē qadamē wa-nḥeth: w-layt lēh zīwā w-lā shūvḥā.

He took the first tablets and came down, and he had no brightness and no glory;

Il prit les premières tables et descendit, et il n'avait ni splendeur ni gloire ;

b-l-w-ḥē tenyānē d-aḥeth: ezdahī hā aykh shemshā.

with the second tablets that he brought down, he shone, behold, like the sun.

ba-d-yātēqē qadhmāytā: layt (h)wā zīwā l-shamāshēyh.

In the first covenant there was no brightness for its ministers.
