talmīdā qaf l-īdaʿthā: w-sav sūkālā w-ethnahar.

Disciple, bend toward knowledge, and take understanding, and be enlightened;

Disciple, incline-toi vers la connaissance, et prends l'intelligence, et sois illuminé ;

b-arʿā d-thūqlāthā rādēyt: ṭʿan la-mpēydā d-yūlpānā.

in a land of stumbling blocks you travel, carry the lamp of teaching.

en yādaʿ a(n)t l-alāhā: b-ṣvyānēh qnī mwdaʿtēh.

If you know God, through his will acquire knowledge of him;

Si tu connais Dieu, par sa volonté acquiers la connaissance de lui ;

d-hādē hāw yrethw ʿaprānē: d-ṣevyānēh ne(d)ʿūn ba-l-ḥōdh.

for this alone is what the sons of dust have inherited, to know his will only.

ṣavynēh hāw d-alāhā: yādhʿīnan men alāhā.

It is God's own will that we know from God,

lā d-mūtā w-lā ʾīthūtā: lā kyānā w-lā sūyākhā.

not his likeness, nor his being; not his nature, nor his bound.

ʿdamā l-hārkā maṭīnan: d-ṣvyānēh d-mārā nedaʿ.

To this point we have attained, that we may know the will of the Lord,

d-ʾīth lēh aghrā wa-thbaʿthā: l-pūth ʿāūlā w-zadīqūtā.

that he has reward and requital, according to wrong and to righteousness.

rāḥēm ṭābē w-pārōshē: w-qārē l-b-īshē tyāvūtā.

He loves the good and the discerning, and calls the wicked to repentance,

w-aykh avā w-āsyā yāṣp: d-men ṭamē nqīm qadyshē.

and like a father and a physician he cares, to raise up saints from the unclean.

If you have known God, know that as a father he loves you,

w-en avā hāw āplā ṣābē: da-b-rā nhe lēh marāḥā.

and if he is a father, neither does he wish his son to be insolent.

If you have known that he is also the Creator, know that he has diligent care,

w-lā ba-l-ḥōdh (h)ī da-ntarsēykh: elā āp (h)ī da-nnasēykh.

not only to nourish you, but also to test you.

en īdaʿtāyhī d-āp āsyā hāw: mā d-māēsh lākh lā traṭen.

If you have known that he is also a physician, when he causes you pain, do not grumble,

b-yadh kēvā argash wa-ḥzī: da-khmā b-ṭīl hāw lēh d-nasēykh.

by the pain perceive, and see how much he cares to heal you.

aykā d-shavṭēh ṭrē lākh: lā tethraʿam shavrāīth.

Where his rod strikes you, do not complain like a child;

Là où sa verge te frappe, ne te plains pas comme un enfant ;

b-yadh shavṭh hādē īlap: da-l-yūlpānēh qārē lākh.

by his rod learn this, that he calls you to his teaching.

b-khlmedem shamshākh mārākh: hwā lākh mārā b-māzōnēh.

In everything your Lord has served you; he became a lord to you in his provision,

hwā lākh avā ba-ḥnānēh: hwā lākh malkā b-pūqdānēh.

he became a father to you in his mercy, he became a king to you in his command.

hwā lākh sāprā b-yūlpānēh: hwā lākh rabā b-mardūtēh.

he became a scribe to you in his teaching, he became a master to you in his discipline,

hwā lākh rāʿyā b-ʿīrūtēh: hwā lākh āsyā w-ʿāṣāōvā.

he became a shepherd to you in his watchfulness, he became a physician and a binder of wounds to you.

l-āsyā lā nāsh ʿādal lēh: en ḥarīpīn sammānāwhī.

No one blames a physician if his medicines are sharp,

d-men gāw ḥūrpā d-sammānē: mqīm ḥūlmānā la-khrīhā.

for out of the sharpness of his medicines he raises up health for the sick.

āsāyā ʿam kēvā hāw maqrev: lāw ʿam mārʿā wa-khrīhā.

The physician wars with the pain, not with the sick and ailing man.

w-alāhā ḥṭāhē rādap: lā (h)wā l-nāshā d-rāḥam lēh.

And God pursues sins, not the person whom he loves.

āp rāʿyā da-ṭʿīn ḥūṭrā: d-aryā w-dēvā neṭrōdh bēh.

Even the shepherd who carries a staff, that with it he may drive off the lion and the wolf,

w-alāhā da-mrīm shavṭh: d-ʿāūlā w-rūshʿā nerdōp bēh.

so God lifts his rod, that with it he may drive away wrong and wickedness.

ṭaybūtēh b-shavṭh madhnaḥ: wa-l-saklē lā methḥazyā.

His grace dawns within his rod, but to fools it is not seen,

w-en mahme d-lā nase nōn: l-(h)ī ṭaybūtā qārēyn lāh.

and if he withholds and does not heal them, that they call grace.

l-āsyā mhaymen marāḥā: da-l-ʿūdrānā gāzar lēh.

The reckless man trusts the physician, that he has ordained it for his help,

w-methʿadal bēh b-alāhā: da-l-yūthrānā rādē lēh.

yet he finds fault with God, who leads him on to profit.

l-āsyā ṭāv men d-la-ʾlāhā: mhaymen sakhlā lā pārēsh.

The fool trusts the physician more than God, and does not discern,

d-en āsyā nkhīlā mhayman: kmā nethhayman sharīrā.

that if a deceitful physician is trusted, how much more should the true one be trusted.

aykā d-māṭa lākh shavṭēh: tamān argesh ba-ḥnānēh.

Where his rod reaches you, there perceive his mercy.

d-kadhlā qraytāyhī d-nasēykh: b-ṭīl lēh d-naqrev ʿam shūḥnākh.

For even when you have not called him to heal you, he is concerned to contend with your wound.

kad ʿal kēvākh lā qbaltāyhī: da-khmā male w-shāḥēq lākh.

Though for your pain you have not received him, see how he wearies and toils for you.

hāw ethā d-nethbar ʿūzēh: d-lākh āsyūtā nāwsheṭ lākh.

He came that its strength might be broken, that he might extend healing to you.

aykā d-mṭāyā lākh ṣevʿēh: ḥaylā nāskā b-hadāmayk.

Where his finger reaches you, strength is poured into your limbs,

d-men ṣevʿā d-āsyā rādē: ḥaylā w-ḥayē la-khrīhā.

for from the finger of the physician flow strength and life for the sick.

meṭul da-khse hāw men ʿaynākh: d-lā tasbar lākh da-b-rūḥqā hāw.

Because he is hidden from your eye, do not suppose that he is far off.

b-shavṭēh ṭārē lākh d-targash: d-ʿamākh hāw w-men qūrbākh hāw.

With his rod he strikes you, so that you may perceive that he is with you and near you.

dāsh ḥeṭtēh akārā: w-men pāraḥthā mṭashe lāh.

The farmer treads out his wheat, and hides it from the bird,

w-alāhā en rādē lākh: men sāṭānā nāṭar lākh.

and God, if he chastises you, guards you from Satan.

akārā d-dāēsh zarʿā: lāw aykh ʿāwpā make lēh.

The farmer who treads the grain does not strike it as the bird does;

Le laboureur qui foule le grain ne le frappe pas comme l'oiseau ;

ṭāmar lēh wa-mḥape lēh: d-lā taʿdhēīwhī ḥaywath kenpā.

he buries it and covers it, lest the winged creature carry it off.

mardūtā zhīrā b-nāshā: d-lā tḥablīh marāḥūtā.

in building he is first, but toward overthrow he lags behind,

aḥettēh gʿāthā d-nesḥōp: w-shadar ʿīrē w-lā ezal.

the outcry brought him down to overthrow, and he sent watchers, but did not go himself;

le cri le fit descendre pour renverser, et il envoya des veilleurs, mais n'alla pas lui-même ;

ardhkhlā gēyr lā sātar: d-hādē l-pāʿlē yāhēv lāh.

for a builder does not tear down, that task he gives to laborers.

sagī rāhēṭ benynēh: w-sagī matīn ḥūbālēh.

Swift runs his building, and slow lingers his destruction;

Rapide court sa construction, et lente s'attarde sa destruction ;

aykā d-vānē kashīrā hāw: w-aykā d-sāḥap matīnā hāw..

where he builds, he is swift, and where he overthrows, he is slow.
