w-lā ʾīth hāwnā āw madʿā: da-mṣe ʿāēl ba-ynayhōn

And there is no mind or intellect that can enter among them,

w-lā reʿyānā qaṭīnā: d-meshkaḥ māṭē l-wa-ʿdyhōn.

nor a subtle thought that can attain to their assembly.

henōn l-hōn yādhʿīn ba-l-ḥōdh: d-aykan w-mānā ʾītayhōn.

They alone know of themselves how and what they are;

Eux seuls savent d'eux-mêmes comment et ce qu'ils sont ;

l-hōn hāw galyā ba-l-ḥōdēyēh: ʾīthūtā da-qnōmayhōn.

to them alone is revealed the being of their persons.

men ʿaynā kasyā ḥzāthhōn: w-men tarʿīthā ḥūshāvhōn.

Hidden from the eye is the sight of them, and from the mind their thought;

Caché à l'œil est leur aspect, et à l'esprit leur pensée ;

w-men ma(d)ʿā āp ṣvyānhōn: ʿārēq ba-d-lā mestayakh.

and from the intellect too their will escapes, for it cannot be confined.

wa-b-medem lā mestaykhīn: elā b-lebā da-mhaymen.

In nothing are they confined, save in the heart of one who believes.

ʾdīshā mrī

[...] my Lord

[...] mon Seigneur

mānāw mārī d-lā ba-ʿyādā: b-shabṭē prīshē nagadtān.

What is this, my Lord, that without precedent, with divers rods you have driven us,

ba-qrāvā w-qamṣā w-kapnā: wa-b-māwtānā ṭareptān.

with war and locust and famine, and with pestilence you have battered us?

arbʿā shabṭē marīrē: ashīwīt eḥadt wa-mḥaytān.

Four bitter rods together you seized and struck us with;

Quatre verges amères ensemble tu as saisies et nous en as frappés ;

ʿal neghdā neghdā ḥrēnā: aykh da-b-ḥemthā nagedtān.

blow upon blow, as though in wrath, you scourged us.

b-sōghā d-neghdayk akestān: b-sagīūthā d-b-īshātan.

With the abundance of your scourges you rebuked us, for the abundance of our evils;

Par l'abondance de tes fléaux tu nous as réprimandés, pour l'abondance de nos maux ;

b-neghdē tkhībē parsītān: d-ḥāwbē tkhībē shameshnan.

with repeated blows you laid us bare, for repeated sins we served.

d-ʿafnan ḥāwbē ʿal ḥāwbē: ʿaft a(n)t shabṭē wa-rdaytān.

For we heaped sin upon sin, you heaped rods and scourged us,

Car nous avons entassé péché sur péché, tu as entassé verges et nous as flagellés,

da-thḥāwe mrī la-shvābayn: da-b-nayā srīḥē ʾītayn.

that you might show, my Lord, our neighbors, that we are wayward children.

men ḥesdā da-b-naī āthōr: dāḥlīnan ṭāv men shavṭākh.

Of the reproach of the sons of Assyria we are more afraid than of your rod;

De l'opprobre des fils d'Assyrie nous avons plus peur que de ta verge ;

d-āp ḥesdā mārī da-shvābē: shavṭā hāw da-qshe ʿal ʿavdayk.

for reproach too, my Lord, from neighbors, is a rod that is harsh upon your servants.

d-nesbar mārī ralyūthrānā: hāwyā (h)wāth lan en tashbēyn.

That we might suppose, my Lord, [...] would befall us, should you deliver us to captivity,

b-ghāw shaynā lā akhsharnan: b-athrā ḥanpā men makhshar.

In the midst of peace we did not prove worthy; in a heathen land, who could prove worthy?

b-ba-ytā nakhpā ezdalaln: b-ba-ytā ṭamā men neshpar.

In a chaste house we were held in contempt; in a defiled house, who would find favor?

l-ghāw men ḥāthmē gnīvīnan: men neṭar lan ba-shvītā.

Within our own seals we were stolen away; who will guard us in captivity?

tḥēyth nāṭōrē amraḥnan: mānā nehwe bēyth ṣaḥnē.

Under watchmen we grew insolent; what shall we be among the shameless?

b-athrā mṭarsā b-l-īlīnan: b-athrā b-l-īlā men nētar.

In a well-guarded land we were corrupted; in a corrupted land, who can prosper?

tḥēyth ʾīdā d-khāhnē mradhnan: w-men ḥerqē nakpē npaqnan.

Under the hand of priests we rebelled, and from the bounds of modesty we went forth.

tḥēyth ʾīdā mārī da-mghwshē: manū neṭar nakhpūtēh.

Under the hand, my Lord, of the Magians, who will guard his chastity?

aykā da-qṭīrā lā ʾīth: ethḥabalw nāwsē nakpē.

Where there is no constraint, chaste sanctuaries were defiled;

Là où il n'est point de contrainte, des sanctuaires chastes ont été souillés ;

aykā da-qṭīrā qām: b-thūlūtā men neṭar lākh.

where constraint stands firm, who will guard your virginity?

shapīrē mārī lā shāwēyn: da-b-shevyā d-ḥanpē nēz(l)ōn.

The fair ones, my Lord, are not fit to go into the captivity of the heathen,

wa-snayā tūv en tashbe: gālēyn l-hōn āp rēshayhōn.

and if you take the plain ones captive too, their heads also will be laid bare.

ṭar mārī nakpē l-ghāw menākh: wa-thḥēyth kenpaykh marāḥē.

Keep, my Lord, the chaste within you, and under your wings the insolent,

d-lā neghlōn l-hōn b-rēshayhōn: w-āp l-eskēmākh neshtalḥūn.

lest their heads be laid bare, and your very form also be stripped.

lā nēte shevyā w-netal: rēshā galyā l-b-yshātan.

Let not captivity come and lay our evils bare to open shame;

Que la captivité ne vienne pas mettre nos maux à nu, à la honte publique ;

sāpēq da-b-ṭūshyā sraḥnan: lā nʿalēyh āp taḥmaṣtā.

it is enough that we sinned in secret — let us not add to it public disgrace also.

āp shapīrāthā d-ʾīth ban: men shapīrtā ḥasīrān.

Even the fair things that are in us fall short of true fairness;

Même les belles choses qui sont en nous restent en deçà de la vraie beauté ;

b-ʿellāthā d-medem medem: nāpqīnan l-shapīrātā.

by pretexts of one thing or another we come forth to fair deeds.

ʾīth d-lā ḥāṭa d-lā nevhath: w-ʾīth d-lā ḥāṭē d-lā meshkaḥ.

There is he who sins not, lest he be shamed; and there is he who sins not, because he is not able;

Il en est qui ne pèche pas, de peur d'avoir honte ; et il en est qui ne pèche pas, parce qu'il ne le peut pas ;

w-ʾīth d-lā ḥāṭ d-lā netṭlem: āp da-rgā d-rēshānūtā.

and there is he who sins not, lest he be deprived also of the rank of authority.

ʾīth da-nṭīr meṭul nāshā: w-ʾīth da-nṭīr meṭul da-rghā.

There is he who is restrained for the sake of others, and there is he who is restrained for the sake of rank;

Il en est qui se retient à cause des autres, et il en est qui se retient à cause du rang ;

w-ʾīth da-nṭīr meṭul da-mḥīl: la-ʿvādā d-marāḥūtā.

and there is he who is restrained because he is too feeble for the deed of insolence.

ʾīth ṣāwrānē d-men ṣāwmā: w-ʾīth ṣāwrānē d-men ḥamrā.

There are necks bowed by fasting, and there are necks bowed by wine;

Il est des nuques courbées par le jeûne, et il est des nuques courbées par le vin ;

ʾīth d-nākēp meṭul savrā: w-ʾīth d-nākēp meṭul da-rgā.

there is he who is chaste for the sake of hope, and there is he who is chaste for the sake of rank;

il en est qui est chaste par espérance, et il en est qui est chaste par rang ;

w-ʾīth d-rāth meṭul da-b-ṣīr: w-ʾīth d-rāth meṭul da-ghnav.

and there is he who fears because he is inferior, and there is he who fears because he has stolen.

ʾīth hāw demwāthā l-qūshtā: da-ʿṭīp hāw l-hēyn āp zpā.

There are semblances of truth, which falsehood also has clothed.

ʾīth da-ṣhe b-ḥamrā w-eshtī: w-ʾīth da-ṣhe b-ḥemthā da-mle.

There is he who thirsts for wine and drinks, and there is he who thirsts, filled with wrath;

Il en est qui a soif de vin et boit, et il en est qui a soif, rempli de colère ;

w-ʾīth da-ṣhe b-ṣāwmā d-aḥīdh: w-hānāw ṣahyā d-neṣḥānā.

and there is he who thirsts in the fast he keeps — and this is the thirst of victory.

et il en est qui a soif dans le jeûne qu'il garde — et celle-là est la soif de la victoire.

lā dāḥlīnan men ḥāwbē: aykh men shemhōn da-ḥṭāhē.

We fear offenses less than we fear their very name, "sins";

Nous craignons les fautes moins que nous ne craignons leur nom même, « péchés » ;

w-hāshā āplā men shemhōn: da-ḥṭāhē d-ḥelīw sagyē.

and now not even by that name — "sins" — are the many afraid.

gavyā (h)ī lan marāḥūtā: elū layt bāh ṣōḥīthā.

Wantonness would be our choice, were there no shame in it;

La débauche serait notre choix, s'il n'y avait en elle nulle honte ;

ḥṭīthā b-hādē sanyā (h)ī lan: ba-d-naqīp lāh kūḥādā.

sin is hateful to us for this — because reproach clings to it.

alū shqīlā ṣōḥīthā: ba-sīmā (h)ī lan paḥzūtā.

Were shame taken away, licentiousness would be sweet to us,

w-elū lā ʾīth kūārā: rḥīmān nēyn lan b-īshāthā.

and were there no censure, evils would be dear to us.

lā makīkh shūrā da-shmākh: w-lā pāsaʿ lēh shabāyā.

The wall of your name cannot be brought low, and the captor cannot pass over it;

Le mur de ton nom ne peut être abaissé, et le ravisseur ne peut le franchir ;

maghdlā hāw rāmā w-ʿashīnā: w-lā kābashīn lēh ga(n)bārē.

it is a tower, lofty and strong, which warriors cannot subdue.

b-shūrā da-shmākh nestatar: men shevyā āp men ḥesdā.

In the wall of your name let us find shelter, from captivity and from reproach also.

b-yārtūtākh qadem aṭnākh: d-naspākh (h)wā ʿal bāzōzē.

In your inheritance he first stirred your jealousy, for it had been given over to the plunderers;
