lā methpaḥmā māwhavtākh: l-(h)ī māwhavtā d-nāsēv a(n)t.

Your gift is not comparable, to that gift which you receive.

zʿōryāīth hāw yāhēv a(n)t: wa-d-lā sākhā nāsēv a(n)t.

A small thing is what you give, and without measure you receive.

qalīl nāsēv mesrēnā: w-sagī yāhēv alāhā.

The miser takes little, and God gives abundantly,

L'avare reçoit peu, et Dieu donne abondamment,

d-mesknāīth yāhēv a(n)t: ʿatīrāīth nāsēv a(n)t.

for as a poor man you give, and as a rich man you receive.

lā gēyr pāḥmā māwhavthākh: l-(h)ī māwhavth d-nāsēv a(n)t.

For your gift is not equal, to that gift which you receive,

Car ton don n'est pas égal à ce don que tu reçois,

ḥlāp hādh d-arʿā da-shmayā: yāhv lākh mrē shmayā.

in return for this earthly thing, the Lord of heaven gives you heaven.

d-īlākh ʿābarā māwhavtākh: wa-d-alāhā qayāmā.

For yours, your gift, is passing, but God's is abiding,

d-īlākh ʾītēyh mle shāʿā: w-(h)ī d-alāhā da-l-ʿālam.

for yours lasts but an hour, and God's is forever.

māwhavthākh akhwāthākh (h)ī: w-da-ʾlāhā aykh d-alāhā.

Your gift is like you, and God's is like God;

Ton don est à ta ressemblance, et celui de Dieu à la ressemblance de Dieu ;

l-d-īlākh ʾīth lāh ḥūtāmā: l-da-ʾlāhā layt shūlāmā.

yours has an end, God's has no completion.

hav hākēyl ba-pṣīḥūthā: men d-īlākh l-aynā d-alīṣ.

Give, then, with gladness, from what is yours to him who is in distress,

d-hārkā w-tamn yāhēb lākh: alāhā ḥlāp māwhavtākh.

for here and hereafter God gives you, in return for your gift.

b-malkūthā d-arʿā ḥārēth: w-menāh yelpath da-shmayā.

In the kingdom of earth I gazed, and from it I learned of that of heaven,

w-ba-mshamshānē da-qdhāmēyh: w-menhōn l-ʿīrē w-malakē.

and by the ministers before it, and from them to the watchers and the angels.

ḥzayth d-yāwmān ʾīthāwhī shūprāh: w-la-mḥār ba-shyōl ʿam klnāsh.

I saw that today its beauty exists, and tomorrow it is in Sheol with everyone,

wa-rheṭ lēh reʿyānī wa-sleq: l-athrā d-māwtā lā māṭā.

and my mind ran and ascended, to a place that death does not reach.

shevqath malkūtā d-arʿā: d-ʿadh qāyāmā eshtaryat lāh.

I left the kingdom of earth, which, even while it stands, is already dissolving,

w-ez(l)th lī ṣydh (h)ī da-l-ʿal: d-lā meshtaryā w-methḥalpā.

and I went to that which is above, which neither dissolves nor changes.

ʿevrēth ʿal gāwdē d-nūrā: w-ʿal kenshē da-banaī nūhrā.

I passed over hosts of fire, and over the assemblies of the sons of light;

Je suis passé au-dessus des troupes de feu, et au-dessus des assemblées des fils de lumière ;

perḥēth ba-ynāth malakē: l-ʿal men gepē da-srāpē.

I flew among the angels, above the wings of the seraphim.

lā ṭrāūnī āplā klaūnī: d-lāw d-evṣ l-tamān selqath.

They did not drive me off, nor did they restrain me, for it was not to pry that I ascended there,

lā da-ḥqūnī men tarʿayhōn: da-pyāsā ṭʿīn (h)wā leshānī.

they did not push me from their gates, for my tongue carried entreaty.

ḥe(l)dhth ʿelath kasyāīth: kad sāgēd nā wa-khpīp nā.

I slipped in secretly, while worshipping and bowing;

Je me suis glissé secrètement, en adorant et en m'inclinant ;

berkēth qāmēth ba-rtēythā: kad māwdē nā w-yālēp nā.

I knelt, I stood trembling, while confessing and learning.

je me suis agenouillé, je me suis tenu tremblant, en confessant et en apprenant.

shemʿēth menhōn teshbōḥtā: wa-zmīrāthā paayāthā.

I heard from them praise, and beautiful songs;

J'ai entendu d'eux la louange, et de beaux chants ;

kul ʿīrā d-ʾīth ba-shmayā: raḥīq sāghdh wa-mshabaḥ.

every watcher that is in heaven, from afar worships and glorifies.

kul malakhā wa-srāpā: kpīp wa-mḥapaī wa-mqadēsh.

Every angel and seraph is bowed, veiling itself, and sanctifying;

Tout ange et séraphin est incliné, se voile, et sanctifie ;

markavthā malyā b-rahṭāh: aykh rūḥā krōbē d-ʾīth bāh.

the chariot, full, in its course, like wind were the cherubim within it.

reghlayhōn gerē rhībē: w-parsāthhōn aykh la-mpēydē.

Their feet were swift arrows, and their hooves like torches,

w-aykh yaḥbūrā d-atōnā: sālēq ba-ynāth gūdayhōn.

and like the glow of a furnace, rising among their hosts;

et comme la lueur d'une fournaise, montant parmi leurs troupes ;

w-aykh ḥelā āp tenānā: ʿṭar bātar markavthā.

and like dust, also smoke, trailed behind the chariot,

w-aykh ʿarpelē ʿabyāthā: men ḥē pā d-qalīlūthhōn.

and like thick clouds, from the swiftness of their motion;

et comme des nuées épaisses, à cause de la rapidité de leur mouvement ;

aykh ḥvāṭā w-zarbā d-may: men qūrqāshā d-gepayhōn.

like the beating and rush of waters, from the clashing of their wings,

w-aykh ṭāwḥā w-qālā d-yammē: mā d-mettrīmīn la-prāḥā.

and like the roar and sound of seas, when they rise to fly;

et comme le mugissement et le bruit des mers, quand elles s'élèvent pour voler ;

w-aykh nehmath gaglē tūbē: mā d-methkadenīn la-ṭʿānā.

and like the rumble of heavy wheels, when they are yoked to bear a load,

w-aykh qālā d-aryāwāthā: men qālā da-prāḥayhōn.

and like the roar of lions, from the sound of their flying.

w-kad hākanā ʿashīnīn: wa-d-ḥīlīn āp taqīpīn.

And though they are so mighty, and fearsome and also strong,

zʿōrīn enōn l-ʾīqārēh: wa-b-ṣīrīn men teshbōḥtēh.

they are small beside his honor, and less than his glory.

kmā nehwe shūvḥā d-ʿīrē: l-w-qbal hāw shūvḥēh d-avā.

How shall the glory of the watchers stand, against that glory of the Father?

wa-khmā ʾīqār malakē: l-w-qbal ʾīqārēh da-b-rā.

And how much is the honor of angels, against the honor of the Son?

wa-khmā qūdshā da-srāpē: l-w-qbal rūḥā mqadashtā.

And how much is the holiness of the seraphim, against the sanctifying Spirit?

lā ḥarw l-avā kad yālēdh: menēh yaldā d-dāmē lēh.

They did not grasp how the Father, in begetting, brought forth from himself offspring that resembles him,

āp lā la-b-rā d-methīledh: men avā ḥaylā w-nūhrā.

lā adrekhw āplā eshkaḥw: men ʾītāwhī kyānā d-rūḥā.

They did not attain, nor did they find, what the nature of the Spirit is;

Ils n'ont pas atteint, ni trouvé, ce qu'est la nature de l'Esprit ;

ḥadh hāw kyānā w-ʿal yātēh: lā methpalghā ʾīthūtēh.

one is the nature, and in itself its being is not divided.

emathī d-avā meshtabaḥ: meḥdā yādaʿ ḥabībēh.

Whenever the Father is glorified, at once his Beloved is known;

Chaque fois que le Père est glorifié, aussitôt son Bien-aimé est connu ;

emathī tūv da-b-rā nerne: estakal lēh yālōdēh.

and whenever again we consider the Son, his Begetter is understood with him.

pshīq lākh d-tetqōl beryāthā: āw tetqōl rūḥā d-qūdhshā.

Is it easy for you to weigh creation, or to weigh the Holy Spirit?

You cannot count the hair of your head, yet you would set bounds to the Holy Spirit.

Do not run after wicked things; the circuit of the earth is enough for you.

lā tēmar d-manīū avā: da-b-rā yādaʿ lēh ba-l-ḥōdh.

Do not say, "Who is the Father?" — the Son alone knows him;

Ne dis pas : « Qui est le Père ? » — le Fils seul le connaît ;

lā terne d-manīū b-w-kdhrā: d-avā hāw rgēīsh bēh ba-shrārā.

do not ponder, "Who is the Firstborn?" — the Father alone truly perceives him.

pshīqāīth āmar nā lākh: d-lā ḥeryānā wa-thʿāshā.

simply I say to you: without dispute and without contention,

wa-ba-galyāthā ṣāar nā: tlīthāyūtā mshabaḥtā.

and in plain words I depict the glorious Trinity.

arpā kyānē taqīpē: ʿelāyē ʿam taḥtāyē.

Set aside mighty natures, the exalted together with the lowly,

w-nēte lan la-b-ṣīrūthā: wa-mḥīlūtā w-shīṭūtā.

and let us come down to littleness, and weakness, and plainness.

aḥōdh b-ʾīdākh ṭarānā: d-shīṭ wa-b-se akhmā d-yādhʿat.

Hold in your hand a flint, despised and vile as you know,

ethbayan aykh ḥakīmā: w-estakal bāh b-kasyūtā.

consider it like a wise man, and reflect upon it in its hiddenness,

da-l-b-īkh a(n)t ḥadh ba-thlāthā: wa-thlāthā b-ḥadh sūʿrānā.

for you hold one within three, and three within one act.

ṭarānā l-b-īkh a(n)t b-ʾīdhākh: w-ʿamēh nūrā w-nahīrā.

The flint you hold in your hand, and with it fire and light;

Le silex, tu le tiens dans ta main, et avec lui le feu et la lumière ;

d-lā karsā b-ṭīn gāwzaltā: wa-b-ghāw gāwzaltā nūrā.

for without a womb the spark is conceived in it, and within the spark, fire.

sharyā nūrā b-gāw kēpā: wa-b-ghāwāh ṣmḥā rghīghā.

Fire dwells within the stone, and within it a longed-for gleam;

Le feu demeure dans la pierre, et en elle une lueur désirée ;

lā mṣyt d-teʿbedh pūrshānā: bēyth ṭarānā l-ghāwzaltā.

you cannot make a distinction between the flint and the spark,

āplā sedhqā w-pālgūtā: bēyth zahrīrē wa-l-nūrā.

nor is there a split or division between the radiance and the fire.

b-ʿūbēh d-ṭarānā nūrā: yātabā bēh w-lā methḥazyā.

Within the bosom of the flint, fire dwells, and is not seen;

Dans le sein du silex, le feu demeure, et n'est pas vu ;

wa-b-ʿūbēh d-avūhī māran: ʿāmar wa-shre b-teshbōḥtā.

and within the bosom of his Father, our Lord dwells and abides, in glory.

lā ṭle nūhrā men nūrā: w-lā nūrā men ṭarānā.

Light is not younger than fire, nor fire than the flint;

La lumière n'est pas plus jeune que le feu, ni le feu que le silex ;

w-lā qashīsh hāw ṭarānā: men gāwzaltā da-b-ghāwēh.

nor is the flint older than the spark that is within it.

tlātayhōn ba-ḥdhā shawyū: ʾītayhōn d-lā pūlāghā.

The three of them are alike in one thing: they exist without division,

kyānā d-ṭarānā ḥadh hāw wa-thlāthā bēh meshtakhḥīn.

the nature of the flint is one, and three are found in it.

w-alāhā ḥadh hāw kyānēh: wa-thlāthā qnōmē shrēyn bēh.

And God's nature is one, and three persons dwell in it.

men ṭarānā mdhīqā lākh: nūrā mḥakmath b-w-yānākh.

From the flint fire peers out at you, and it makes your understanding wise,

w-men gāw nūrā nābaʿ lākh: ṣmḥā w-nūhrā d-mapṣaḥ lākh.

and from within the fire springs forth for you a ray and a light that gladdens you.

men avā ṣāmaḥ b-w-khrā: w-nāpēq rūḥā aykh nūhrā.

From the Father the Firstborn shines forth, and the Spirit proceeds like light.

ṭarānā māwledh nūrā: ḥamīmtā āp nahīrtā.

The flint begets fire, both hot and bright,

hpakh āwledh qarīrūtā: mayā d-menēh nūkhrāyyan.

but it does not beget coldness: water is a stranger to it.

ṭarānā ba-d-mūth saypā: ʿūrlūtā gzar (h)wā b-ʾūrḥā.

The flint, like a sword, cut away the foreskin on the way,

ṣpōrā a(n)tath mūshē: b-ṭarānā gezrat la-b-rāh.

Zipporah, the wife of Moses, circumcised her son with the flint.

wa-b-ṭel rāzā da-b-ghāūh: eshtamshat bēh tedmūrtā.

And the mystery within it was laid bare: a wonder was wrought through it,

nehmat nūrā b-ṭarānā: w-meḥdhā ʿerqat gāwzaltā.

The fire roared within the flint, and at once the flame fled,

adhīqat tlītāyūtā: men ṭarānā shatīqā.

the Trinity peered out from the silent flint,

la Trinité apparut du silex silencieux,

w-meḥdhā ethbaṭal rūghzā: w-qāmat ātā d-gāwzaltā.

and at once the wrath was checked, and the sign of the flame stood forth,

ʿdamā da-b-gāw ṭarānā: tlīthāyūtā ethḥazyat.

until, within the flint, the Trinity was made manifest.

b-rāzāh qām klmedem: d-(h)ī (h)ī mārath klmedem.

By its mystery everything stands, for it is the mistress of all things,

b-kēwelā tlītāyūthā: ethrashmat āp ethkathbat.

In [...] the Trinity was inscribed and also written,

ba-thlāthā kēyth medhyārīn: rāzēh hāw da-thlīthāyā.

in three, then, they dwell: it is the mystery of the Triune,

ḥadh rāwmā da-thlātayhōn: ḥdā mshūḥthā da-thlātayhōn.

one height have the three of them; one measure have the three of them.

w-enhw d-hālēyn medhyārē: ḥdhā ʾītēyh (h)wāth shawyūthhōn.

And if these are dwellings, their equality is one,

kmā shūyn w-āwēyn wa-ḥlīṭīn: avā wa-b-rā w-rūḥqūdshā

how equal, and joined, and blended are the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit!
