d-ebadhw (h)wāw meṭul ʿāūlā: w-da-shrekhw meṭul zadīqē.

For they perished because of injustice, and they were left because of the righteous.

(h)ī ḥarbā meṭul b-īshē: w-hānā shaynā ḥlāp ṭābē.

That sword was because of the wicked, and this peace is in place of the good.

l-magrath rūḥēh d-alāhā: ʿdal (h)wā ʿamā d-ʿevrāyē.

The people of the Hebrews took offense at the long-suffering of God's spirit,

wa-psaq savrā d-lā dān: alāhā la-b-naynāshā.

and lost hope, concluding that God does not judge mankind.

w-ḥadh men nvyē rūḥānē: kaḥdēh l-ʿamā kad āmar.

And one of the prophets of the spirit refuted the people, saying,

d-alītōnāyhī l-alāhā: b-pethgāmaykōn shaqārē.

"You have wearied God with your lying words,

w-en āmrīn ʾ(n)tōn da-b-mānā: alīnāyhī la-d-lā lāē.

and if you say, 'In what have we wearied him who is never wearied,'

d-āmrīn ʾ(n)tōn lam da-l-kēnē: masle w-gābē l-ʿāwlē.

in that you say that he rejects the just and chooses the wicked."

ḥzā (h)wā gēyr ʿamā sakhlā: d-kahīn ʿūmrā d-ḥaṭāyē.

For the foolish people saw that the dwelling of sinners flourished,

w-aykh īdaʿtēh rānē (h)wā: d-lā mettavʿīn ʿanātē.

and reasoned, according to its own understanding, that transgressions go uncalled to account.

lā dēyn rabā d-y(h)ūdāyē: ethraʿamw ʿal kēnūthā.

Not only the great ones of the Jews complained against justice,

d-lā yalepw ʿal hāw d-īnā: d-hāwē bātar nūḥāmā.

for they had not learned of that judgment which comes after the resurrection.

tā w-ethbaqā ba-ḥrānē: d-qārēyn ba-shmēh da-mshīḥā.

Come, and look at others, who call themselves by the name of Christ,

w-ʿādhlīn lēh d-meṭul mānā: māwḥar tābaʿ la-ḥṭāhē

and blame him, saying, "Why does he delay in calling sins to account,"

wa-ṭʿāūhī l-hāw pūrshānā: d-bēyth yamīnā l-semālā.

and they have forgotten that distinction between the right hand and the left,

d-aykh meshkānā ba-sbartēh: sāmēh māran w-ethʿalī.

which our Lord set forth, like a pledge, in his gospel, and ascended,

d-m lam da-d-naḥ men rāwmā: b-rēh d-nāshā b-shūvḥā d-avūhī.

that when the Son of Man shall shine forth from on high, in his Father's glory,

ʿāālīn ʿammē l-b-w-ḥrānā: zadīqē ʿam ḥaṭāyē.

the peoples shall enter into testing, the righteous with the sinners.

en hākēyl ʿdamā d-ātē: hāydēyn dān la-b-rīthā.

If, then, it is only when he comes that he judges creation,

Si donc ce n'est qu'à sa venue qu'il juge la création,

mānā shḥīq a(n)t ḥalāshā: da-thʿīr d-īnā qdām zavnā.

why, weak one, are you troubled, to rouse judgment before its time?

endēyn hādē tābaʿ a(n)t: d-ʿal men kahīn ḥaṭāyā.

But if this is what you demand, why should the sinner grow fat,

tbaʿ l-w-qdam da-l-mānā kaī: qayām a(n)t kad ḥaṭāī a(n)t.

ask first why indeed you stand while you are a sinner.

ḥaīn klhōn zēpānē: w-la-ʾlāhā mītē enōn.

All the deceivers are alive, and yet to God they are dead.

kahīn ʿūmrā d-ʿāwlē: wa-hpīkh wa-d-re men kadū.

Fat is the dwelling of the wicked, but it turns and is scattered at once.

l-shūlāmā ḥāar d-īnā: d-vātar ʿāūlā nethnaṣaḥ.

Judgment looks to the end, that it may triumph after injustice,

d-mā d-ethpasaq ʿellāthā: āwʿī menshēlī tabaʿāthā.

for when the causes are cut off, retribution springs up of a sudden.

magar kēnā l-ʿāwālā: ʿal savrā da-thyāvūtā.

The just one bears long with the wicked, in hope of repentance,

w-la-d-pānē wa-l-da-mʿaṣ: l-ḥarthā bāḥar ba-sīmā.

and for him who turns back and him who resists, the sweet one waits until the end.

lā mestarhav akhwāthākh: d-zaqtākh ḥavrākh w-ethʿazazt.

He does not rush headlong as you do, when your companion has stung you and you flare up,

d-ydaʿ hāw l-aynā d-ḥāṭē: d-ḥaṭāyā hāw ʿadhlā nehwe.

for he knows the one who sins, that he was a sinner before he came to be.

d-maskel bākh ṣābēyt da-nmūth: d-lā shūālā w-ʿūqāvā.

You want the one who wrongs you to die without question or inquiry,

w-lā methraʿēyt da-b-mārākh: klnāsh maskel wa-msaybar.

but you do not consider that everyone wrongs your Lord, and he endures.

sagyēē gēyr da-khparw bēh: d-lā ʿeṣyānā wa-qṭīrā.

For many have denied him, without compulsion or constraint,

w-aykh ḥanānā ṭʿīn l-hōn: ʿdhmā l-shūlām ḥaīyhōn.

yet, full of mercy, he bears with them until the end of their lives.

w-ʾīth da-b-qalīl ʾīqārā: ʿāvōrā zaben mārēh.

And there is one who, for a little passing honor, has sold his Lord,

b-hamnīkhā āw ba-l-b-w-shā: sām qūshtā wa-nsav tūkā.

for a turban or a garment set aside truth and took up deceit.

ʾō l-napshā da-shrāt menāh: nīrēh rabā da-mshīḥā.

O the soul that has loosed from itself the great yoke of Christ,

Ô l'âme qui a délié d'elle-même le grand joug du Christ,

wa-b-hamnīkhā zalīlā: ṣabtat paghrāh l-avdānā.

and with a shabby turban has adorned its body for destruction!

ʾw kāpōrā ethraʿā: d-men aykā l-aykā shanīt.

O denier, consider from where to where you have moved,

wa-l-mānā b-mānā ḥaleft: ettʿīr wa-b-khī ḥalāshā.

and for what have you traded it. Awake, and weep, weak one!

et contre quoi tu l'as échangé. Éveille-toi, et pleure, faible !

men ʿābēdh lākh hamnīkhā: mā da-mzīʿ lākh da-yānā.

What will the turban do for you, when the judge stirs against you,

w-aykā tehwe maṣnaptākh: mā d-mettavʿā ḥanpūtākh

and where will your headwrap be, when your impiety is called to account?

qūlbē d-da-hvā d-ʿal ʾīdaykh: bāṭlīn b-qavrā w-gēhanā.

The gold bands upon your hands come to nothing in the grave and Gehenna,

wa-khmā zabanīn ʿadh ḥaī a(n)t: kūrhānākh matar ṣvtākh.

and how many times, while you are still alive, does your sickness strip off your finery!

d-ḥal men kēbē da-mʿādhēīn: rāptīn men gāw hadāmē.

Fear the pains that are wont to break out from within the limbs,

wa-pnī ʿōl bēh b-hāw tarʿā: d-pathḥēh ḥnānā l-tayābē.

and turn back, enter by that door which mercy has opened for the penitent.

w-en men d-īnā da-mṭayav: lā msaredh lākh reʿyānākh.

And if your mind does not shrink from the judgment that is made ready,

ʿavdā lam aynā d-yādaʿ: ṣvyānā d-mārēh w-ṭalmēh.

The servant, it is said, who knows the will of his master and yet defrauds him,

b-maḥwāthā ʿazīzāthā: mettavʿā ṭālōmūtēh.

with fierce blows his wrongdoing is called to account.

wa-ḥrēnā d-kad lā yādaʿ: askel wa-ḥṭā bēyth mārēh.

But another, who, while not knowing, offended and sinned against his master,

with gentle blows is corrected, for he is spared.

When this pattern is sought, of the covenant that has put on falsehood,

b-kul athrā aykh nāmōsēh: methhapakh zēpā w-nāṣaḥ.

In every place, according to its law, falsehood turns about and triumphs,

in that men and women who were trained for the covenant act wickedly.

ʾīth aykā d-lā methmakhrā: shāṭīthā nāmōsāīth.

wa-l-pūrsā d-zalīlūtāh: lābashā ṭūpsā da-thzane.

and for the pretext of her vileness, she puts on a habit so that she may fornicate,

w-mā d-ethyadhʿat b-eskēmāh: d-lā qenṭā (h)ī (h)ī paḥzūtāh.

and when she is known by her habit, her wantonness goes without fear.

She has opened the road for the unclean to come to the place of her filthiness.

w-qadhmāyāth qalīl menēh: d-eskēmā lābashā ba-l-ḥōdh.

At first, but a little of it - she wore only the habit,

d-tetal ātā l-ḥazāyē: d-layt lāh rēshā w-thāvōʿā.

that she might give a sign to onlookers, that she has no head and no claimant,

w-ʿamāh da-mdīq ʿal apēyh: ṭūpsā nakhpā d-ʾūkāmē.

and with her, glancing upon her face, a modest habit of dark garments,

apṣaḥīw paḥzē apayhōn: l-w-qbal apē d-eskēmāh.

the wanton have brightened their faces against the face of her habit.

ba-l-b-w-shē wa-b-ḥeshlāth: mākhrā napshāh la-qyāmā.

With garments and with trinkets she betroths herself to the covenant,

b-naḥtayhēyn wa-b-ṣvtayhēyn: ḥērātā hwaī men shelyā.

in their attire and their adornments, they became free women all at once.

lā mettpīsān ba-l-b-w-shā: shḥīmā d-shāwē l-nakpāthā.

They will not be persuaded by a plain garment, such as befits the modest,

d-marnīthhēyn ʿal shāṭayā (h)ī: da-b-seqlayhēyn mettaḥdīn.

for their care is for the wanton, who are caught by their ornaments.

b-sūblē ʿābdān pūrshānā: d-la-ʿbūtā w-rāwāyūtā.

By their trailing hems they make a distinction - of bondage and of drunkenness -

wa-b-ʿeqbēh d-ḥamrā ʿāālīn: ḥūthḥātē d-shāwtāpūtā.

and in the wake of wine come in the beginnings of intimacy.

hārkā d-īnā hāw da-ʿlaymē: w-da-ʿlaymāthā d-eshtaṭīw.

Here is the judgment of the young men and young women who have gone astray;

Voici le jugement des jeunes gens et des jeunes filles qui se sont égarés ;

d-sābē dēyn wa-d-sābāthā: rabā (h)ī menan tashʿīthā.

but of old men and old women, the story is too great for us to tell.

mzāwgē taqnē mā da-sevw: henōn pārshīn ḥadh men ḥadh.

Rightly wedded couples, when they grow old, separate one from another,

w-māwdēyn bāh b-qadīshūtā: l-vārōyā d-shāwtāpūtā.

and confess, in holiness, to the Creator of their union.

zanāyē dēyn da-ʿṭīpīn: shem nakhpūtēh da-qyāmā.

But fornicators, who are clothed with the name of the modesty of the covenant,

b-saybūtā hāw yatīrāīth: meshtamʿīn la-rghīghāthā.

in old age all the more give themselves over to desires.

w-neḥze l-neshē d-ettalmadh: b-shūqrā la-shmēh da-mshīḥā.

And let us look at the women who were trained falsely in the name of Christ,

d-kad ʿatyqān ba-shnayā: zalīlān ṭāv b-zanāyē.

how, though old in years, they are all the more vile with fornicators.

ṭīsh kūḥlā ba-ghvīnayhēyn: wa-ṣdīdā ʿal ʿaynayhēyn.

Kohl is smeared on their brows, and paint upon their eyes,

wa-mthīḥīn tūv pakayhēyn: b-ṣnʿāthā d-sūmqūtā.

and their cheeks too are stretched taut with the crafts of rouge.

tlēyn rēyḥānē b-ṣāwrayhēyn: w-meshḥānē b-gāw ʿūvyhēyn.

Perfumes are hung upon their necks, and ointments within their bosoms,

wa-sqīlān aykh kallāthā: sāvātā da-shmā b-īshā.

and polished like brides are these old women of evil name.

ap saʿrā da-b-reshayhēyn: d-yaqrēh kyānā b-saybūtā.

Even the hair on their heads, which nature made honorable in old age,

ḥalpāyhī henēyn ba-ghdaōlē: zalīlē da-ṭlāyāthā.

they exchange for the cheap curls of young girls.

l-hēyn hāw dāmēyn kāpōrē: da-b-gelyā kparw ba-mshīḥā.

Like these are the deniers who openly denied Christ,

wa-b-kesyā hpakhw yāmēyn bēh: kad meṣṭadēyn ba-pshīṭē.

but in secret turned back and swear by him, while they trap the simple.

lā naṭʿe bākh kāpōrā: ʾō ba-ytāyā tamīmā.

Let not the denier deceive you, O simple household member,

d-lāw tayāvā hāw l-alāhā: tayāvā d-marshaʿ klyōm.

for one who does wickedness every day is not a penitent to God.

mā d-qarīv kenshā d-ḥanpē: rāʿam bāh b-khāpōrūtēh.

When the assembly of pagans is near, he thunders in it with his denial,

w-mā da-khnīshīn ba-ytāyē: l-besh lēh ṭūpsā d-sharīr.

and when the household is gathered, he puts on the form of the faithful.

w-en ḥāzē d-ḥadh men ṭamē: ḥlīṭ bēh b-kenshā d-qadīshē.

And if he sees that one of the unclean is mingled in the assembly of the holy,

he guards his mouth and is careful, lest he let slip the confession.

en ʾīth lākh ʿavdā d-māwdē: b-thāwānā d-ʿavdākh ʾīthāwhī.

If you have a servant who confesses, he is indeed your servant,

wa-b-shūqā qāam kāpar: b-shūʿbādākh d-lāw ʿavdākh hāw.

but if in the marketplace he stands and denies your service, he is not your servant.

b-shūvḥā d-shalīṭ nāmōsākh: methbaʿyā tāwdīth ʿavdākh.

In the glory where your law rules, the confession of your servant is required,

d-ʿal melath pūmēh tesav: taḥwīthā d-ʿal shūʿbādēh.

that by the word of his mouth you may receive proof of his allegiance.

w-aykā d-qāymīn saqūvlē: methbaʿyā haymānūthā.

And where adversaries stand, faith is required,

d-mā d-āwdī bāh tayābā: prash napshēh men ṭāʿayā.

so that when the penitent confesses it, he separates himself from those who err.

ʾw d-māwdē b-haymānūtēh: ezdahr bāh b-haymānūtākh.

O you who confess your faith, be careful of your faith;

Ô toi qui confesses ta foi, veille sur ta foi ;

ṭar napshākh men kūrhānā: w-lā snīq a(n)t ʿal sammānē.

guard yourself from sickness, and you will not need medicines.

ḥaṭāyā hwī tayāvā: lā tekhpōr w-ken hāw tāwdē.

If you are a sinner, be a penitent; do not deny and then confess,

sāpaq lākh ʿamlā d-nasīt: ba-ḥṭīthā wa-thyāvūthā.

let the toil you have tried in sin and repentance suffice for you.

w-āp l-aynā d-khāpar enhw: d-thāv ʾīth hāw shūvqānā.

And even for one who has denied, if he repents, there is forgiveness,

Et même pour celui qui a renié, s'il se repent, il y a le pardon,

en rab ʿamlā d-tāwdītēh: aykh gūnḥā d-khāpōrūtēh.

if the toil of his confession is as great as the offense of his denial.

elā ṣnīʿā sāṭānā: mbaya lēh l-aynā d-khāpar.

But cunning Satan comforts the one who denies,

Mais Satan, rusé, console celui qui renie,

b-savrā srīqā wa-nkhīlā: men taḥwīthā d-zadīqē.

shemʿōn lam rēsh talmīdē: kāpōrā (h)wā men l-w-qdam.

Simon, the chief of the disciples, was at first a denier,

w-pāwlōs da-b-nā ʿēdāthā: sāthōrā (h)w qadhmāyth.

and Paul, who built up the churches, was at first their destroyer.

elā shemʿōn da-khpar (h)wā: kad lā mpās (h)wā ba-mshīḥā.

But Simon, when he denied, had not yet been tested in Christ,

w-men d-eshtāwdaʿ rabūtēh: ba-zqīpā mīth ʿal apāwhī.

yet once he came to know his greatness, he died on the cross for his sake.

w-pāwlōs da-rdaf la-shlīḥē: d-lā b-īdaʿthā hpakh qayem.

And Paul, who persecuted the apostles without knowledge, turned back and stood firm,
