hedyōṭā d-ʿābēdh la-ḥmā: aykh ʾūmānā maḥe lēh.

The untrained man who makes bread, like a craftsman, it keeps him alive,

wa-b-rīrā d-qārē kthvā: aykh ḥarīmā ḥāyē bēh.

and the dull one who reads a book, like one set apart, lives by it.

d-ʿal bāʿwāth

which is about supplications,

qui est sur les supplications,

b-zavnā d-malkā men athrēh: nāpq nesʿōr shūlṭānēh.

When a king goes out from his land, to visit his dominion,

reʿlā shārē b-arʿāthā: d-malkā zāaḥ men athrēh.

trembling settles upon the lands, because the king has moved from his land,

methrahbīn dēyn rēshānē: w-da-yānē da-b-kul d-w-kā.

But the rulers are alarmed, and the judges in every place,

wa-mʿaqvīn ʿal kēnūthā: men ṭebēh d-malkā d-ātē.

and inquire into justice, at the report that the king is coming,

tākēs ʾīdēh bāzōzā: w-marken rēshēh ḥāṭōpā.

The plunderer restrains his hand, and the robber bows his head,

ṭrūnā ātē l-shūʿbādā: wa-l-madathā mārōdā.

the tyrant comes to submission, and the rebel to paying tribute,

ḥthīrā lābēsh mūkākhā: wa-b-hīlūtā ʿazīzā.

The arrogant puts on humility, and the mighty, feebleness,

w-meshkaḥ lēh maptaḥ pūmā: meskēnā ʿal ʿatīrā.

and the poor finds courage to speak out against the rich,

w-hāshā malkā mārē kul: la-b-rīthā mṭayav d-nēte.

And now the King, Lord of all, is preparing to come to creation,

shābēq mwtā ʾūḥdānēh: d-ḥayē l-b-īkhīn ba-thḥūmāwhī.

Death relinquishes his dominion, in whose borders the living have been held captive,

w-ba-shyōl dāēṣ nūḥāmā: wa-qyāmtā d-men bēyth mītē.

and in Sheol the resurrection exults, and the rising from the house of the dead,

yāhēv athrā sāṭānā: w-vāṭlīn shēdē men ṭūʿyaī.

Satan gives ground, and the demons cease from their deception,

w-vāēz denḥēh d-da-yānā: shūvhārā d-khlhōn teghmē.

[...] the dawning of the Judge, the glory of all the ranks,

kad mettavʿīn gūʿlānā: d-ḥērūtā wa-d-pūrshānā.

while pledges are being exacted, of freedom and of discernment,

tāw kēyth nevṣe ba-ynātan: ḥāwbātan ʿam sanyātan.

Come, then, let us examine among ourselves our debts, together with our hateful deeds,

nesav lan dēyn kūwānā: w-yūlpānā men reʿyānā.

and let us take correction, and instruction from the mind,

w-mūmē d-masle reʿyānā: nasle enōn ṣvyānā.

and the blemishes that the mind rejects, let the will reject them too,

lā nethqaṭragh shūlṭānan: men ḥūshāban bēyth d-īnā.

so that our free will not be accused by our own thought, in the place of judgment.

hā ḥūshāban akes lan: wa-b-sar wa-sʿā shūlṭānan.

Behold, our thought rebukes us, for our free will has disregarded and strayed.

hā ba-shlīḥē yūlpānan: d-men tērāthā d-ḥaṭāyē:

Behold, our teaching is in the apostles, that from the doors of sinners

mettdīnīn sūʿrānayhōn.

their deeds are judged.

leurs actes sont jugés.

lā shāmaʿ a(n)t qāl d-īnā: d-meṭul mānā argeztānī.

Do you not hear the voice of judgment: "Why have you provoked me to anger?"

d-lebākh hāw madhnaḥ qūdhmaykh: sūrḥānē āw neṣḥānē.

For it is your own heart that dawns before you, whether offenses or triumphs.

nevsōr hākēyl napshātan: qdām b-w-srānēh d-da-yānā.

Let us therefore give account of our souls, before the Judge's own verdict,

w-ʿadh qaym klḥadh menan: nethne lēh ba-thyāvūtā.

and while each of us still stands, let each recount it to him in repentance.

da-b-sīrnā mārī men ḥāwbaī: d-tespaq lī mḥōtēh d-reʿyānī.

I am laid low, my Lord, by my sins; let the blow of my own conscience be enough for me,

neghdā qashyā mnagedh lī: da-yānā d-ʿūmrēh l-gāw mnī.

a harsh scourge scourges me, the Judge who dwells within me.

men ḥūshāvā da-ḥṭīthā: maghne napshēh da-yānā.

From the very thought of sin, the Judge reveals himself,

d-ḥērūthā (h)ī men yāthāh: d-lā ba-qṭīrā tethnaṣaḥ.

for it is freedom, of its very self, that it might triumph without compulsion.

ṣnīʿ hāw sagī bārōyā: da-l-yaṣran aghʿel shavṭā.

Very wise is the Creator, who entrusted the rod to our own nature,

d-kad lā kālē men sakhlū: bātar sakhlū naṣrep lan.

so that, since it does not restrain us from folly, after our folly it might refine us.

b-w-ḥrānā qadem ya(h)v lan: da-ʿvādā d-ʿāūlā w-qūshtā.

He gave us beforehand a test, of the deeds of wrong and of right,

d-men d-aslīnan da-rḥīmān: nesne l-napshan ʿal da-ḥṭayn.

that once we reject what is beloved to us, we might hate ourselves for having sinned.

ʾw ḥūshāvā mabūʿā: d-sakhlūtā wa-d-qūṭrāghā.

O thought, fountain of folly and accusation,

hāw methrape la-ḥṭīthā: hāw methkashar la-thbaʿthā.

that same thought which grows slack for sin is fit likewise for retribution.

b-ṣevyānēh sāʿar ʿāūlā: wa-b-ʿūdālēh qūṭrāgē.

By its own will it commits wrong, and by its own reproach it accuses itself.

sdhīq hāw nāshā ʿal napshēh: ba-ytā hāw da-mle ḥeryānē.

Man is split against himself; he is a house full of contention.

b-rīkh hāw ḥaylākh gāvōlā: d-lā methmalal tūqānākh.

Blessed is your power, O Fashioner, for your handiwork cannot be told.

b-hālēyn hāw gēyr āghōnē: methyadhʿā āp ḥērūtā.

For it is by these contests that freedom too is made known.

aynā d-ahmī men ḥayāwhī: mātaḥ lēh l-shūʿbādh ḥashāwhī.

whoever neglects his life submits himself to the bondage of his passions.

kad shāṭ lāh l-īdaʿthā: nūhrā mkhāwen sanyāthā.

Though he despises knowledge, the light still points out his hateful deeds,

w-lā margesh d-āpen mārēdh: ʿal d-īnēh l-d-īnā mashlem.

and he does not perceive that, even in rebelling, he hands his own case over to judgment.

ṭūvāwhī l-aynā da-khātēh: men lebēh w-lā men mrēh.

Blessed is the one whose rebuke comes from his own heart, and not from his lord,

d-gāzar shūḥnā da-b-napshēh: āpen ḥāēsh lā ḥāēsh.

who cuts away the sore that is within himself; though he suffers, it is no true suffering,

da-d-lā pkhārā w-sūrādhā: b-hīlāīth gāzar shūḥnēh.

who, without fetter or restraint, vigorously cuts away his own sore.

hāw gēyr d-ʾīdhā da-ḥrēnā: qārbā l-paghrēh methqanaṭ.

For he to whose body another's hand draws near is filled with dread,

da-khmā zavnīn ba-qṭīrā: wa-b-mardūthā pāgaʿ bēh.

for how many times it has come upon him, by compulsion and by chastisement.

nqe hāw mārī gensā d-nāshūtan: la-ḥṭīthā b-khlhōn zavnē.

Prone, my Lord, is the race of our humanity, to sin at all times,

lā (h)wā ḥadhthā hāw sūrḥānēh: wa-d-sharwāthīn sakhlūtēh.

his offense is nothing new, and his folly is from ages past.

amīn hāw margez klyōm: wa-b-tarʿūtākh meshtayan.

Continually he provokes you every day, and by your favor he is set at peace.

kad hāw rāhṭ l-avdānēh: ḥūbākh hāw qām b-apāwhī.

While he runs toward his own destruction, it is your love that stands in his way.

lā memthōm ethā ṣdayk: wa-shel menākh ʿal ḥāwbāwhī.

Never has he come to you and asked of you concerning his sins,

kyānā gēyr da-nsav menākh: malep (h)wā lēh ʿūdrānā.

For the very nature he received from you was teaching him what would help him,

hāw dēyn basar ʿal napshēh: d-ba-rghīghātēh nethbasam.

but he disregarded himself, that he might take pleasure in his own desires.

ba-rdā w-nūrā ethḥalaṭw: da-ʿṣā enōn ʿāvōdā.

Hail and fire were mingled together, forced into one by the Maker,

w-ba-rnāshā ʿam b-īshātēh: lā kādhn lēh ṭābathā.

yet man, together with his evils, is not yoked with what is good.

tharw meṣrāyē w-ʿevrāyē: b-shawyūtā d-nūrā w-ba-rdā.

Egyptians and Hebrews alike marveled at the concord of fire and hail,

mūzāgē ksayā d-hāwēyn: b-esṭūkhsē b-khlhōn dārē.

the hidden minglings that occur among the elements in every generation.

pgaʿīw ba-ḥdādē galyāīth: wa-hwāw tahrā sharwāyā.

They met each other openly, and became a wonder from the beginning.

kse ḥamīmā b-qarīrā: wa-mshāwtap lēh yabīshā.

The hot is concealed in the cold, and the dry is joined together with it,

ḥlīṭ ʿamhōn āp raṭīvā: w-layt ḥeryānā ba-ynāthhōn.

the moist too is mixed with them, and there is no strife between them,

l'humide aussi se mêle à eux, et il n'y a pas de querelle entre eux,

w-aykh saqūvlē eshtayanw: b-pūqdānēh d-alāh klā.

and though they were opposites, they were made peaceable, by the command of God who restrains all.

knāwthā tāw eshtayanw: b-tarʿūtēh d-mrā d-gāwā.

Fellow elements, come, be at peace, by the good pleasure of the Lord of all,

la-khyānē qṭīrēh shaʿbedh: lan dēyn tarkan bāʿūtēh.

his compulsion subjected the elements, but for us, now, is his own entreaty.

b-ṭaybūtēh lam ethmaskan: meṭlātan ʿatīrā.

By his grace, indeed, the Rich One became poor for our sake,

lā (h)wā da-ḥsar men d-īlēh: d-lā ḥāsar men malyūtēh.

not that he was in want of his own, for he lacks nothing of his fullness.

meskēnūtēh da-khyānā: l-wāth nāshā ʾītēyh memthōm.

Poverty is natural; it has ever belonged to man,

alāhā dēyn ʿatīrā hāw: ba-khyānēh wa-b-ṣevyānēh.

but God is rich, both in his nature and in his will.

mettaḥtāyū ettaḥtī: d-gazēh npalegh la-snyqē.

He humbled himself utterly, that he might distribute his treasure to the needy,

wa-b-paghrā d-nāshā ḥapī: rabūtēh w-ethā ṣēdayn.

and in the body of man he covered his greatness, and came to us,

margānīthā ba-zlāpthā: mkasaī shūvḥāh ba-l-b-w-shāh.

The pearl in its casing conceals its glory within its covering,

w-alāhūthā b-nāshūtā: la-zʿōrūtā ethrakhnat.

and the Godhead, in humanity, inclined itself to littleness.

lā kēyth neṭlōm ṭaybūtēh: d-hāw mūkākhā d-āwrev lan.

Let us not, then, deny his grace, that humility which made us great,

w-en ba-ḥṭāhē mqāwēynan: ṭlamnāh l-khlāh ṭaybūtā.

for if we persist in sins, we deny that whole grace.

aynā d-maʿwel kad māwdē: d-la-ʾlāhā kēnā pālaḥ.

Whoever does wrong while professing to serve a righteous God,

metṭalmā lāh tāwdītēh: da-ʿvādhā l-melē zākē.

his confession is denied, for deed overcomes word.

w-aynā d-yālap da-nmalel: shapīrāthā la-ḥrānē.

And whoever learns to speak fine words to others,

yūlpānēh men d-w-bārēh: metdagal āw methhayman.

his teaching, by his own conduct, is either proven false or made believable.

b-rāzē gēyr ḥanpē d-ṭūʿyaī: kthīv d-w-bārā d-ḥanpūtā.

For in the mysteries of the pagans of error, a way of pagan conduct is inscribed,

w-aykh shōʿyāthā d-avdānā: metdabrīn āp ṭāʿayā.

and, like fables of perdition, the erring too are guided by them.

mghūshā d-sāʿē ʿal emēh: wa-l-ḥātēh w-ba-rtēh nāsēv.

The Magian who lies with his mother, and takes his sister and his daughter,

Le mage qui s'unit à sa mère, et prend sa sœur et sa fille,

men hāw bedhyā da-mlatem: nāpēq rūḥā ʿal rūshʿēh.

from that concocted fable comes forth a pretext for his wickedness.

w-en ṭāʿayā men ṭūʿyaī: qabelīw ṭwpsē da-ḥṭīthā.

And if the erring, out of their error, have accepted patterns of sin,

ḥynan da-shrārā yalepnan: shbaqnāh l-khlāh wālīthā.

we, who have learned the truth, have abandoned all that is fitting.

lāw gēyr ba-l-ḥōdh la-qnōman: nākē ʿāūlā da-ʿvdayn.

For not on ourselves alone does the wrong we commit inflict harm,

da-l-ʿammē da-b-ghāw karkan: aykh tūqlāthā sīmīnan.

for to the peoples within our city we are set as stumbling blocks.

l-shemʿēh rabā d-yūlpānan: sāōḥīn ʿammē da-b-kul d-ūkh.

At the great report of our teaching, the peoples in every place come flocking,

w-mā da-pgaʿīw ban etrashalw: d-ʿawar enōn tenānan.

but when they meet us, they stumble, for our smoke blinds them.

ḥyṭīthā sepat aykh nūrā: w-hā yāqdān bāh kul mūshḥān.

Sin has spread like fire, and behold, every quarter burns with it.

ḥarīp zāwʿā d-saybūtā: men ḥēpā da-ʿlaymūtā.

Sharper is the stirring of old age than the impulsiveness of youth,

ṭlāyē l-ḥāwbē ga(n)bārīn: wa-l-sūrḥānē yalwdē.

the young are mighty toward sins, and children toward transgressions.

shbaq neshē ʿvādā d-neshē: w-īlep ṣedhyā d-avdānā.

He abandoned women, the natural function of women, and learned the pursuit of destruction.

ezdanīw paghrē ʿmīdē: b-neqpā d-ḥanpē w-etṭanapw.

Baptized bodies have played the harlot, joined with pagans, and been defiled,

aykh tēghūrtā sīmā lāh: la-mhaymantā paḥzūtāh.

like merchandise is set down for her, for the believing woman, her wantonness.

w-aykanā lam tethḥasēyn: b-paghrēh d-mārēkhī dāwīthā.

And how, O wretched one, will you find mercy, in the body of your Lord,

da-l-paghrēkhī d-īlēkhī ya(h)vtāyhī: d-nehwe d-yāshā l-zanāyē.

seeing you gave your own body over, to be trampled by fornicators?

ba-l-b-w-shē d-ṣvtēkhī enhw: d-katar rēyḥā d-saryūthā.

If in the garments of your adornment there lingers a stench of corruption,

ḥashā w-evlā methʿaṭpatī: ʿadh ʿābar menhōn ba-ʿgal.

you wrap yourself in grief and mourning, until it quickly passes from them.

qshe rēyḥā b-ghāw hadāmaykī: d-ʿeṭrēh margaz l-alāhā.

Harsh is the smell within your members, whose fume provokes God to anger,

napshēkhī ṭāvā men naḥtaykī: ashīghīh ba-thyāvūtā.

Your soul is worth more than your garments; wash it in repentance.

men naḥtā saryā nādā: tarʿītēkhī rāḥmath ṣbatē.

From a rotten garment your mind recoils, O lover of ornaments,

w-men gūshmā paḥzā nādā: ṭaybūtā rāḥmath nakpē.

yet from a wanton body grace recoils, grace, who loves the chaste.

rēyḥā ṭāvā da-l-b-w-shēkhī: paqrē l-wa-ʿdhēkhī methkanshīn.

For the sweet scent of your garment, the licentious gather at your rendezvous,

wa-b-nakhpūtā d-hadāmaykī: alāhā b-ʿūbakhī shārē.

but if your members are chaste, God dwells in your bosom.

lā nāsh mākar zānīthā: b-hāw mahrā da-b-thūlātā.

No one betroths a harlot with the same bride-price as for virgins,

da-b-khūnāyā d-tartayhēyn: sīm pūrshānā d-tartayhēyn.

for in the very name given to each, the distinction between the two is fixed.

l-zānīthā kmā en payā: masle w-shāṭ nāmōsā.

However beautiful the harlot may be, the law rejects and despises her,

w-la-b-thūltā kmā en sanyā: masge myaqar nāmōsā.

but however plain the virgin, the law honors her all the more.

tā kēyth wa-ḥzī nāmōsā: d-shūvqānā ṣydh alāhā.

Come, then, and see the law of forgiveness that is with God:

d-aykh nakpāthā methyaqrān: zānyāthā ba-thyāvūtā.

harlots are honored, through repentance, as if they were chaste.

nerhaṭ mādēyn kul d-askel: w-nethḥase ba-thyāvūthā.

Let everyone, then, who has sinned, run and find mercy through repentance.

pnī men ʿāūlākh ba-ytāyā: w-apnā ʿamākh nūkhrāyē.

Turn back from the wrong within your own house, and turn back the strangers along with you,

ʾw yārtā d-paraḥ nekhsāwhī: tā l-wāth avūkh ḥanānā.

O heir who has squandered his wealth, come to your compassionate father,

la-thrēyn ʿālmyn ethpalgat: mardūtā wa-thyāvūtā.

Between two worlds are divided chastisement and repentance:

hārkā nāṣaḥ shūvqānā: wa-l-hal mamlekh shūnāqā.

Here, forgiveness prevails; there, torment reigns.

Ici, le pardon triomphe ; là-bas, le tourment règne.

zehwe pāʿlē la-sbarthā: w-napne ʿamn ṭāʿayē.

Let us become laborers for the Gospel, and turn the erring back with us,

naʿdē napshān men b-īshā: w-nebōz menēh qenyānāwhī.

let us free our soul from the Evil One, and plunder from him his possessions,

ʿmalīw tagārē da-sbarthā: kad rādēyn b-athrāwāthā.

The merchants of the Gospel have labored, journeying through the lands,

w-lan d-īlan sīm yūthrānā: b-gāw karkan wa-khrīhīn (ḥ)nan.

yet for us, our own profit lies within our own city, and still we remain sick,

krīh ʿaman āp yūlpānan: da-b-d-w-bārayn ethqapaḥ.

sick along with us is our own teaching, which has been struck down by our own conduct,

w-b-thrēyn tūkyn ethmaḥīn: da-qnōman wa-d-yūlpānan.

and we have been struck with a double blow: in our own person, and in our teaching.

ba-ʿnānā māwledh shemshā: qeshtā ātā d-tarʿūtā.

In the cloud the sun begets the bow, a sign of reconciliation,

wa-b-ʿamā taqnā mḥāwe: shrārā napshēh l-ba-ʿāyāwhī.

and among an upright people, Truth shows itself to those who seek it,

lā meshkaḥ shemshā bāzaʿ: b-nūhrēh āar d-ethʿabī.

The sun cannot pierce with its light an air that has thickened,

w-lā maṣyā haymānūtā: d-ba-snayā tetel b-w-qyāh.

and neither can faith give proof of itself among the wicked.

b-nāmōsā d-malkā ātē: da-yānā ḥadhthā d-hāwē.

By the law of a king yet to come, a new judge that comes to be,

w-athrā d-ḥāzē shūḥlāpā: lā ḥāshēv lēh da-yānā.

the land that witnesses the change does not yet reckon him its judge,

āp nūkhrāyā d-ḥāza ban: d-w-bārā paḥzā w-rapyā.

So too the stranger, who sees in us conduct that is wanton and slack,

mdagal lāh āp la-sbarthā: meṭul sanyūth d-w-bārē.

disbelieves the Gospel itself, because of the vileness of our conduct.

nūhrā w-melḥā kanī (h)wā: pārōqan la-b-naī rāzēh.

Light and salt our Savior named the children of his mystery,

wa-b-khūnāyēh tbaʿ enōn: pūnāyā d-khlhōn ʿammē.

and by this name he required of them the turning of all peoples.

d-lā yūthrān ḥashbāh l-melḥā: d-shāvaqā ṭaʿmā da-d-yānāh.

He reckoned salt of no profit, if it loses the flavor proper to it,

and he prepares, moreover, horses too, for the riding, as they say, of his gods,

d-qām kūmrā wa-b-ṭūʿyaī: mnagedh besrā d-hadāmāwhī.

For the priest stands, and in his error lacerates the flesh of his limbs,

and with the clean blood of his own body he makes an offering for the dwelling of the idols.

ēramyā nvī shadar: ʿamēh l-arʿā d-kētāyē.

Jeremiah the prophet sent, with him, to the land of the Kittim,

āp lan d-īlan takes lan: ḥanpūtā da-b-gāw karkan.

Us too, in like manner, the paganism within our city rebukes,

ʿal d-argeznāyhī l-alāhā: w-ḥalepnāyhī ba-rghīghātan.

because we have angered God, and exchanged him for our own desires.

yūlpānāwhī d-ākēlqarṣā: kahīnīn bāh ba-mdhī(n)tan.

The teachings of the Slanderer thrive in it, in our city,

w-ban d-īlan markan rēshēh: d-qūshtā meṭul sūʿrānayn.

and in us, we have bowed low the head of truth, because of our deeds.

w-aykh da-shbaqnan kasyāthā: āwbadhnan āp galyāthā.

And just as we abandoned hidden things, we have lost the revealed things too.

The houses of sin resound with horns and trumpets,

dans les synagogues des Juifs il y a harmonie et rassemblement ;

The Jew runs at every hour to prayer, while it is still early dawn;

Le Juif court à toute heure à la prière, alors qu'il fait encore à peine jour ;

Old man and child and youth ran together, alike;

Vieillard, enfant et jeune homme couraient ensemble, pareillement ;

The city that honored beasts -- the sanctuary bore the price for it.
