ʾō reʿyānē raqīqē: d-kad lā rheṭw ḥāvw w-ethparsīw.

O tender minds, that though they did not run, were shamed and laid bare,

w-kad lā nḥethw (h)wāw l-āghōnā: zqapīw ṣvʿā d-ḥayāvūthā.

and though they had not gone down into the contest, raised the finger of guilt.

ʿal ktā d-reʿyānā: mmalel bēh kyā

On the affliction of the mind: nature speaks in it.

en neqrōv aykh meskēnē: l-wāth klmedem nethyatar.

If we draw near as the poor do, we shall find abundance in everything,

d-men ḥūsrānā ḥpīṭūtā: methīldā ban la-b-ʿāthā.

for out of want is born in us the eagerness to seek.

lā ʾīth d-meskēyn men kapnā: w-sagī mbasem mēkhūltā.

Nothing is poorer than hunger, yet it greatly sweetens food,

da-mrārē en tāwsheṭ lēh: ḥalyūthā b-hēyn maṭʿem lākh.

for if you hold out bitter things to it, it makes you taste sweetness in them.

ḥakīmā (h)ī meskhnūtā: ḥadh ba-mā l-ʿatīrūtā.

Poverty is wiser than wealth, a hundred times over,

da-b-ṣbwāthā shīṭātā: mpīsā napshāh d-lā ʿamlā.

for with things of little worth, it satisfies its own soul, without labor.

magīrsā mhīrā kapnā hāw: da-d-lā sōghā d-mūdākē.

Hunger is a skilled cook, that needs no abundance of relishes,

b-la-ḥmā w-melḥā wa-b-īrqā: ṭʿūmā d-hanī yāhēv lākh.

with bread and salt and herbs, it gives you a pleasant taste.

l-hānōn savaʿē d-lā kapnīn: mettaqnīn l-hōn mūdākē.

For those who are sated and do not hunger, relishes are prepared for them,

d-napshā krīhtā tethraghragh: w-tēkhōl meṭul d-nasīsā.

so that the sick soul may be made to crave, and eat, because it has been tempted.

kapnā ḥlīm hāw w-lā pāqēdh: saybārāthā d-mūzāgē.

Hunger is sound, and calls for no seasoned dishes,

d-hāw mā d-meshkaḥ ba-sīm hāw: l-kapnā w-hanī l-mēkhūltā.

for whatever it finds is sweet to hunger, and pleasant as food.

krīhā (h)ī napshā d-ʿatīrē: b-yadh malyūthā da-ṭʿūmē.

Sick is the soul of the rich, through the abundance of delicacies,

ba-d-ghōn ʿāmlīn ʾūmānē: da-ntaqnūn l-hōn mūdākē.

so craftsmen labor to prepare relishes for them.

espalīnwāthā l-shūḥnē: wa-l-karsāthhōn b-w-shālē.

Poultices for their sores, and broths for their bellies,

aykh āsyā āp maghīrsē: w-aykh shūḥnā napshā da-b-hōn.

cooks too are like physicians, and the soul within them is like a sore.

ḥlīmā dēyn napshā d-kapnā: w-(h)ī lāh sāpāqā da-thshamesh.

But the soul of the hungry is sound, and it alone suffices to serve it,

lā methramyā la-ṭʿūmē: da-b-mā da-shkhīḥ mettpīsā (h)ī.

it is not given over to delicacies, for it is content with whatever is at hand.

napshā d-savʿā w-aṭīmā: dāyāshā lam kakārīthā.

The soul that is full and gluttonous tramples, they say, on the loaf of bread,

ṭāʿōmā ʾīthāūhī savʿā: d-ḥalyūthā d-ya(h)v alāhā.

the sated man is only a taster of the sweetness that God gives,

w-napshā d-kapnā aykh da-khthīv: marīrāthā ḥalyān lāh.

but the soul of the hungry, as it is written, finds even bitter things sweet.

kapnē mshabḥīn ba-mrārē: w-sabʿē āplā b-ḥalyūthā.

The hungry give praise even in bitter things, but the sated do not, even in sweetness.

men da-khpen l-ʾūrḥā d-ḥayē: ḥlēyn lēh mrārē men devshā.

Whoever hungers for the way of life, to him bitter things are sweeter than honey,

w-aynā d-lā kpen lāh l-ʾūrḥā: āp ḥalyūtāh d-īshā lēh.

and whoever does not hunger for the way, even its sweetness is bitter to him.

w-aynā d-lā pṭīn da-nshamesh: rghīgātēh b-d-ūkh lā pāhē.

And whoever is not slack in service, his desires do not stray anywhere,

d-men d-ʾīth b-ʾīdēh wa-b-ʿūmrēh: sāpēq hāw l-pārōshūtēh.

for whatever is in his own hand and in his own house suffices for his discernment.

aynā dēyn da-ʿvīdh ʿavdā: la-rghīghātēh lā kāēsh.

But whoever has made himself a slave does not check his desires,

w-ba-ḥdhā d-w-kā lā mqāwe: da-b-khldūkh ʾīth ḥadthāthā.

and does not remain in one place, for everywhere there are new things.

gzār d-īnā da-hwā l-ḥewyā: hāw napīq ʿal āsōṭē.

The sentence passed on the serpent goes out also against the profligate,

d-ḥewyā mhalekh ʿal karsēh: w-āsōṭā ʿal tūrsāyēh.

for the serpent crawls on its belly, and the profligate on his appetite.

b-b-w-yānā d-lā mettargam: ʿbadh malkā kul pūrshānīn.

With understanding beyond interpreting, the King made every distinction,

sām ḥarīmē bēyth saklē: aykh rṣīnē ba-shvylē.

he set the sharp-witted among fools, like runners set on their paths.

ya(h)v ʿatīrē w-meskēnē: aykh pāthōrē qdām kapnē.

He set the rich and the poor like tables before the hungry,

shdhā ʿwīrā ʿal ḥazāyā: aykh ʿaynā ʿal napṭēyrā.

he cast the blind before the seeing, as an eye is set before a lamp,

l-ḥadh samī wa-l-ḥadh pataḥ: d-nettʿīr ḥashā da-khyānā.

One he blinded and one he opened, that the feeling of nature might be stirred,

da-l-samyā pthīḥā ndabar: w-neshkaḥ aghrā w-yūthrānā.

so that the one with open eyes might lead the blind, and find reward and profit.

l-ḥadh ḥagrēh w-ītev ḥādar: d-ḥērūtā b-da-rgāh tednaḥ.

One he made lame, and set him sitting idle, that freedom might dawn in its measure,

kad zāyānā meṭul savrā: w-ṭāʿnā meṭul mūlkānā.

as it gains provision through hope, and bears its load because of the promise.

l-ḥadh maḥlem wa-l-ḥadh makhev: d-ḥūbā nevlaq la-mṣaʿtā.

One he heals and another he afflicts, so that love may spring up between them,

d-āsar ḥaṣāwhī wa-mdayel: la-khrīhā aykh da-l-mārā.

binding up his loins, he attends the sick man as though he were his master.

l-ḥadh asnī wa-l-ḥadh afī: da-nbadeq ʿal īdaʿtan.

One he made repulsive, and another comely, to put our discernment to the test,

d-lāw aykh ḥaywāthā ʾītayn: d-lā prash ṣalmā men ṣalmā.

for we are not like beasts, that do not distinguish one form from another.

b-shūḥlāpē d-ḥezwē da-ʿbadh: ethyadhʿat pārōshūtan.

Through the varieties of appearance that he made, our discernment became known,

d-ʾīth hāw ban medem d-yatīr: d-pārēsh ḥezwā men ḥezwā.

for there is in us something more, that distinguishes one appearance from another.

shdēyn meskēnē b-gāw shūqē: ba-d-mūth gazē malālē.

The poor are laid in the streets, like speaking treasures,

kad qāʿēyn l-hōn l-ʿatīrē: d-tāw satarw ban gazaykōn.

as they cry out to the rich, 'Come, store up your treasures in us.'

ḥekhmtā b-shwqē meshtabḥā: b-yadh ḥādhōrē w-meskēnē.

Wisdom is glorified in the streets, through beggars and the poor,

d-ḥekmath alāhā sāmat: hālēyn ṭaksē l-yūthrānan.

for the wisdom of God has established these arrangements for our profit.

ḥādhōrā da-mrīm qālēh: men l-wāth māryā estaʿrat.

The beggar who lifts up his voice - this was ordained by the Lord,

d-kad qārbīnan da-nparnes: nehwe b-gazāwhī shāwtāpē.

yāhōvā aykh mabūʿā hāw: wa-snīqā ba-d-mūth ṣahyā.

The giver is like a spring, and the needy is like the thirsty,

l-ṣahyā gēyr mayā mpayghīn: w-la-ṣrīkhūtā māwhavtā.

for water refreshes the thirsty, and a gift refreshes need.

ya(h)v āp ḥemthā ba-khyānā: d-tehwe mānā la-ṭnānā.

He gave heat also to nature, that it might be a vessel for zeal,

lā (h)wā d-rūghzā nāwsep bāh: elā d-qūshtā nethbaʿ bāh.

not that wrath should be increased by it, but that truth should be sought through it.

aykh nūrā ba-ryā ḥemthā: l-medem ḥāshḥā l-medem lā.

Like fire, wrath is useful for one thing and not for another.

l-methbaʿ napshan lā ʿāhnā: shrārā l-methbaʿ methbaʿyā.

Our soul is not fit for vengeance; truth alone should be sought.

b-nūrā hādē da-khyānā: lāw qayṭōnākh māwqedh a(n)t.

With this fire of nature you do not burn down your own chamber,

da-mʿadran bāh sāʿar a(n)t: w-men da-msagpān mdaʿekh a(n)t.

what helps, you do with it; what harms, you quench.

hākanā ʾīth āp ḥemtā: ba-khyānā mānā d-nāshā.

So too wrath exists as a vessel of man's nature,

lāw da-ḥdādē neqṭōl bāh: elā d-b-īshtā nerdōp bāh.

not that we should kill one another with it, but that we should pursue evil with it.

alū ḥemtā ban lā ʾīth: ṭnānā l-wātan qāar (h)wā.

If wrath were not in us, zeal would have grown cold in us,

wa-thbaʿthā d-qūshtā ṣēdayn: pāshrā (h)wāth lāh w-methkarhā.

and the pursuit of truth within us would have grown feeble and sickly.

medem sāʿrā w-medam lā: nūrā hādē d-methḥazyā.

This visible fire does one thing, and not another,

āp ḥemthā l-medem ḥāshḥā: wa-l-medem lā methbaʿyā.

wrath too is useful for one thing, and not needed for another.

āp pūmā l-medem ḥāshaḥ: wa-l-medem tūv lā ḥāshaḥ.

The mouth too is useful for one thing, and again for another it is not useful,

nbarekh wa-nshabaḥ ḥāshaḥ: lā (h)wā da-nlūṭ wa-ngadhep.

it is useful to bless and to praise, not to curse and to blaspheme.

ap ʿaynā d-teḥze ḥezwē: w-tetel tāwdī l-ṣayārā.

The eye too, that it may see sights, and give thanks to its Maker,

lā (h)wā d-teragh b-īshāīth: elā da-thḥūr nakhpāīt.

not that it should look with evil desire, but that it should look modestly.

āp edhnā w-yaṣrā d-ʾīth ban: l-medem ettsīmw l-medem lā.

The ear too, and the instinct that is in us, were appointed for one thing and not another,

mānē nōn da-b-hōn zāmar: madʿā adhmā d-shāpar lēh.

they are instruments through which the mind makes its music, so long as it pleases.

marḥem napshēh l-vāzīqā: shādhēl lēh b-saybārāthā.

He endears himself to the decoy dove, coaxing it with food,

ʿābēdh lēh lēh bar rāzā: d-aykan nhalekh sūʿrānēh.

he makes it a confidant, so that his business may proceed.

hāw nkhīlā ʿal ṭōhmēh: gās mayte pāraḥthā.

He grows treacherous toward its own kind; deceitfully he brings in the bird,

hāwē ḥūṭā arīkhā: d-men lebā d-āar nṣūd.

it becomes a long cord, with which he hunts from the heart of the air,

tāwrīkhā d-ḥūbēh arīkh: maṭʿem hāw lēh l-vāzīqā.

the long tether of his affection - he lets the decoy taste some slack of it,

kmā en teshdēīwhī pāraḥthā: l-wātēh ʿāṭap men kul d-ūka.

however far the bird casts itself, it circles back to him from every place.

lā dāḥēl da-l-mā nele: ntarsīywhī w-mekash lā nekōsh.

He is not afraid of wearying himself to feed it, nor does he then fail to snare it,

da-ṭʿīm hāw lēh d-lā ṭālmā: pāraḥthā aykh ba-rnāshā.

for he has come to know that the bird, unlike man, does not betray.

manīū da-ʿlāwhī neshtaʿe: d-methrḥem la-ḥwāwāthā.

Who can tell of him who makes himself beloved to serpents?

rmē l-hōn ba-kpāpāthā: w-men ḥarmānā methḥarkash.

He casts coiling charms to them, and by the spell they are made to writhe,

ākednā b-pūmēh sām: w-gārsā b-ʿūbēh marīrā.

He puts a bit in its mouth, and a bitter morsel in its bosom,

w-mā d-ashqīī arwī enōn: hww lēh l-ghūḥkā w-la-shʿāthā.

and when he has given them drink and made them drunk, they become for him a sport and a pastime.

kāē b-gārsā lā nāsham: wa-b-ḥarmānā w-lā nāpaḥ.

The biter does not breathe through the bit, nor hiss through the spell,

b-kul esraym (h)ī da-khthīvā: shālmā da-b-kul neshtalaṭ.

In every way it is as it is written: peace, that it may rule in all things.

ḥadh men hadāmaī nāshā: enhw d-mūmā nehwe bēh.

One of man's limbs - if there be a blemish in it -

Un des membres de l'homme — s'il s'y trouve une tare —

lā ʾīth medem ba-b-rīthā: d-d-w-ktēh nmale ba-ʿvādā.

there is nothing in creation that can fill its place with a substitute work.

bērūlā en nāsh neqbōʿ: b-d-w-kath ʿaynā d-methnakyā.

If one should set a beryl in place of a damaged eye,

lā maṣyā seprā l-meqrā: w-lā shvīlā trīṣā l-mēḥadh.

it would not be able to read a book, nor keep to a straight path.

w-leshānā d-da-hvā enhw: d-nesav nathqen bēyth shenē.

And if one should take a tongue of gold and set it among the teeth,

lā mṣe mhapekh qīnāthā: aykh raʿdūtēh d-leshānā.

it could not turn out melodies, as the tongue's own trembling does.

ʿasqā l-mevrā beryātēh: d-l-ylān l-meqnā beryātēh.

It is hard to create his creatures, though they are easy to acquire once created,

ba-da-mayā zʿōrē w-shīṭē: nāshā l-nāshā mezdaban.

for small and cheap prices, man is sold to man.

l-mezban ṣeprā d-l-īlā lan: l-mevrā dēyn ṭāv ʿasqā lan.

To buy a bird is easy for us, but to create one is very hard for us,

l-mezban sūsyā mṭēynan: l-mevrā dēyn āplā b-ḥelmā.

we can manage to buy a horse, but to create one, not even in a dream.

elū īqīrā d-mayhēyn: aykh da-b-rīthhēyn yaqīrā.

If the price of them were as costly as their creation is costly,

layt d-meshkaḥ zāban (h)wā: d-layt d-mayā la-b-rītēh.

there would be no one able to buy, for there is no price for his creation.

b-mānā ba-rkēh (h)wā l-ādām: alāhā elā b-hādē.

In what did God bless Adam, if not in this,

d-lēh neshtaʿbadh klmedem: wa-d-nekhbōsh kul shūlṭānēh.

that everything should be subject to him, and that he should subdue all under his rule?

hāw hāw d-medem lā qānē: hwyū mārā d-khlmedem.

He who possesses nothing - he is the master of everything,

w-lēh hāw mshaʿbadh klmedem: w-ṣdāwhī enēyn b-w-rkāthā.

everything is subject to him, and with him are the blessings.

aynā dēyn da-qne medem: qnātēh arʿā wa-khbashtēh.

But whoever possesses something - the earth has acquired him, and subdued him,

hwā lēh ʿavdā l-qenyānē: w-b-w-rkāthā praḥ men ṣedāwhī.

he has become a slave to his possessions, and blessings have flown from him.

marḥeq lēh gēyr shūlṭānā: d-mā d-ethqarbat yaʿnūthā.

For authority departs from him, when acquisitiveness draws near,

w-pālḥā lāh āp ḥērūtā: ʿavdūtā l-medem d-eḥdat.

and freedom itself serves, in slavery, whatever it has seized.

layt ʿūthrā d-rab men hānā: d-vātar ʿūthrā lā nerhaṭ.

There is no wealth greater than this, not to run after wealth,

w-layt mesrēnūthā ḥrēthā: elā d-ʿūthrā neshḥōq lan.

and there is no other poverty than that wealth should oppress us.

layt ʾīqārā l-ʿal men hān: da-l-ʾīqārā lā nḥūr.

There is no honor above this, not to look toward honor,

āplā shūvḥā d-aykh hānā: da-l-shūvḥā d-nāshā nevsōr.

nor any glory like this, to despise the glory of man.

d-lā ḥne l-shūvḥā alāhā hāw: d-mī l-alāhā d-rab men kul.

He who does not bend toward glory is like God, who is greater than all,

d-lā snīq ʿal ʿūthrā mryā hāw: etdamā lēh l-vārōyākh.

he who has no need of wealth is lord; make yourself like your Creator.

d-shāl lākh lam lā tekhlēywhī: shūlṭānā d-malkā ya(h)v lākh.

'Do not refuse the one who asks of you' - this authority the King has given you,

b-hādē hāw myaqar hāw malkā: d-la-d-shāal lēh lā kālē.

in this a king is honored: that he does not refuse the one who asks him.

d-mī l-malkā d-lā mthōm kālē: shealātā men ba-ʿāyāwhī.

Be like a king who never withholds petitions from those who ask him,

d-āp hāw b-alāhā mdame: d-lā mʿīq napshā d-shāōlē.

for he too resembles God, who does not grieve the soul of the one who asks.

pūqdānā d-māran d-emar: d-la-d-shāal lākh lā tekhle.

The commandment of our Lord, who said, 'Do not refuse the one who asks of you,'

l-malkā ṣābē da-ndamēykh: b-yadh da-b-hādē rām men kul.

wills to make you like a king, since in this a king is exalted above all.

gzōm badar qenyān ʿāūlā: d-teqne apē galyāthā.

Vow to scatter the possessions of injustice, so that you may gain an open face,

in that it is said that he teaches man knowledge,

wa-d-netal ṭaʿmā ḥrēnā: l-hāw yūlpānā da-b-kesyā.

and that he gives another sense to that teaching which is hidden;

et qu'il donne un autre sens à cet enseignement qui est caché ;

ya(h)v ḥedhmtā l-ḥakīmē: aykh merthā mmadkhānītā.

he renders service to the wise, like a stamp that impresses.

w-kad lāw medem mettāwsap: ʿal (h)ī d-ṣīrā b-madʿayhōn.

And though nothing is added to what is already traced in their minds,

aykh hāw d-medem yatīrā: mā d-methmallā b-leshānā.

it is as though it were something more, when it is spoken by the tongue.

nāmōsā ba-d-mūth ḥeṭtā hāw: w-reʿyānā aykh naḥtūmā.

The law is like wheat, and the mind like a baker;

La loi est comme le blé, et l'esprit comme un boulanger ;

hewyū maseq lāh b-ṭūpsē: l-melthā shḥīmtā da-khthīvā.

it is he who raises up, in figures, the plain word that is written.

en ḥeṭthā lā meshtakhḥā: lā methnaṣaḥ naḥtūmā.

If wheat cannot be found, the baker is not proved skillful,

w-en melthā b-seprā lā ʾīth: lā meshtabaḥ ḥakīmā.

and if the word is not in the book, the wise man wins no glory.
