ḥūr bēh hākēyl da-l-ḥūrbā: aykh bēyth gāwsā ḥāshēv lēh.

Look then at one who counts the wasteland a house of refuge,

w-bēyth merdā w-bēyth pūṣāyā: d-men rūḥē d-īthbā pārēq.

a house of correction and a house of deliverance, that frees him from the spirits which dwell there.

ba-ḥvūshyā d-ʿam ḥaywāthā: nṣḥ (h)wā b-vābēl dānīyl.

In confinement with the beasts, Daniel triumphed in Babylon.

lā tethqaṭaʿ ba-ḥvūshyākh: d-menēh teshkaḥ malkūtā.

Do not despair in your confinement, for from it you shall find the kingdom.

ba-ḥvūshyā nṣaḥī ḥazqīēyl: w-en nvī ḥvūshyā rḥem (h)wā.

In confinement Ezekiel was victorious; and though a prophet, he loved confinement.

kmā lākh zādhq lākh d-terḥam: la-ḥvūshyā d-bēh shāpar a(n)t.

How much more right is it for you to love confinement, in which you shine forth.

nvī ʿāal la-ḥvūshyā: a(n)t lā magrat ba-ḥvūshyākh.

The prophet entered confinement; you do not bear yours long.

hwī bar da-yrā la-nvyā: rḥam eskēmā da-rḥem (h)wā.

Be to the prophet a son of the cloister; love the manner of life that he loved.

gvī lākh shelyā da-ghvā lēh: wa-hwī ḥavrā b-pūrshānēh.

Choose for yourself the stillness that he chose, and be a companion in his discretion.

sav lākh ḥāwrā d-eskēmāwhī: wa-nṣbthūnākh ḥūlṭānāwhī.

Take to yourself the companion of his habits, and his strength shall root you fast.

kad meshkaḥ (h)wā da-nʿadar: māryā nvī ḥavshēh (h)wā.

When he was able to give aid, the Lord confined the prophet.

yāwmān kul d-māṭa āmar: d-aykh ēʿadar ʿāal nā.

Today, whoever comes says, 'I enter so that I may help.'

kad layt d-khāā ba-ḥṭīthā: elā ba-l-ḥōdh ḥazqīyl.

When there was none clean from sin, except Ezekiel alone,

kad hāw hwā ba-l-ḥōdh āsyā: b-ʿamā da-sghī maḥwātēh.

when he alone was physician to a people whose wounds were many.

kad kul predtā men ʿaprēh: da-nvī nvī the (h)wāt.

when every particle of his dust would itself become a prophet.

lā āwpīw la-mṣmādū: kēbē d-ʿamā marāḥā.

They were not enough to bind up the wounds of a rebellious people,

b-hānā zavnā alāhā: aʿel ḥavshēh la-nvī.

at that time God brought the prophet into confinement,

d-argesh da-myatar hāw lēh: ḥvūshyā yatīr men pehyā.

for he perceived that confinement was more profitable for him than freedom.

ḥamlēh māryā ba-ḥvūshyā: da-l-mā lam kad bāʿēynan.

The Lord had mercy on him in his confinement, lest — it is said — while we plead

da-nthūv ʿamā w-lā tāēv: nvī da-shkhīḥ netdāwadh.

for the people's repentance, and they do not turn, the prophet who stands ready be troubled.

hān eskēmā da-ḥvūshyā: ḥazqīyl hāw msharyānēh.

This manner of confinement — Ezekiel was the one who began it,

hāw sharī ba-ḥvīshūtā: w-vātar bātar talmīdhāwhī.

he began it in confinement, and his disciples came after, one after another.

elūlā d-yatīrīn (h)wāw: yūthrānē l-ghāw men da-l-bar.

Were it not that the gains within were greater than those without,

āplā nvī bar b-w-zī: la-ḥvūshyā meshtaʿbadh (h)wā.

not even the prophet, son of Buzi, would have submitted himself to confinement.

shāmīrā ḥav men ḥūṣpā: d-ʿamā wa-rheṭ la-ḥvūshyā.

The adamant grew faint before the people's insolence, and fled into confinement.

w-thḥōvā hā methgazam: ḥūṣpā l-mezkā d-b-īshāthā.

and behold, the guilty one is threatened, while insolence prevails in evil deeds.

āplā l-marṭūṭēh yāwsep: eḥadh kad pāḥ men ḥūṣpā.

Not even his garment did Joseph keep hold of, when he fled from shamelessness,

hākanā rhīv (h)wā l-meʿraq: yaqīrā d-lā takhsīthā.

so swift was he to flee — the honored one — leaving without covering,

d-aykh d-yaqīr (h)wā lēh l-meḥṭā: w-la-mparsāyū b-thūlūtēh.

for as it was grievous to him to sin, and to expose his purity,

hākanā yaqīr (h)wā lēh: d-nepōq (h)wā d-lā takhsīthā.

so it was grievous to him to go out uncovered.

w-avūhī da-ḥzā nakhpūtēh: ʿbadh pedayāthā l-khōtīnēh.

And his father, who saw his modesty, made repayment for his garment,

d-argesh (h)w d-āplā d-rāʿāwhī: ṣvā (h)wā d-neḥzōn ba-ryē.

for he perceived that not even his own attendants wished the strangers to see it.

l-wa-ʿdēh hāw d-shaynā ṣāv: gayāsā āp qāṭōlā.

For that tryst of peace, the robber too, and the murderer, longs,

d-ke hāw da-b-rā men gayāsē: b-rāzā d-yathbā ṭūrāyā.

for the wilderness is clear of robbers, by the mystery that a mountain-dweller resides in it.

lāw magān wa-srīqāīth: sānyān shaynā ḥaywāthā.

Not without cause, and not in vain, do wild beasts hate peace,

d-yādaʿān da-thʿīsh hāw ʿūmrā: w-lāēyn klhōn ʿāmōrāwhī.

for they know that dwelling thrives, and all who inhabit it labor.

lā nshagshūnākh avāhaykh: b-shūwdāyē ḥlayā da-b-hōn.

Let not your fathers trouble you with the sweet promises that are in them,

d-ʿadh nātapīn lākh ṣdayhōn. methḥalyān lākh melayhōn.

for while they drip their words at you, their sayings grow sweet to you —

car tandis qu'ils te distillent leurs paroles goutte à goutte, leurs propos te deviennent doux —

lā thaymen enōn emathī: da-nmallūn ʿamākh ṭāvthā.

never believe them, when they speak kindly with you.

d-āp l-aramyā nakhlūhī (h)wāw: aḥāwhī w-māryā badhq lēh.

For Jeremiah too, his brothers deceived, but the Lord revealed it to him.

māryā ṣāth (h)wā da-b-nekhlā: mmallīn (h)wāw ʿam eramyā.

The Lord perceived that they spoke with Jeremiah in deceit,

d-bēyth avūhī w-aḥāwhī aka(ḥ)dh: wa-shmaʿ māryā wa-ghlā lēh.

his father's house and his brothers together; and the Lord heard, and made it known to him:

aḥayk lam w-bēyth avūkh: āp henōn tūv da-gelīw bākh.

'Your brothers,' he said, 'and your father's house — they too have dealt falsely with you,

w-emrw lam bāthrākh melē: lā teplaṭ tashar enōn.

and behind you they have spoken words — do not let it pass, do not trust them.

lā tetkel ʿal melayhōn: d-ba-khmnā mmallīn ʿamākh.

Do not rely on their words, for they speak with you in ambush,

leshānhōn nkhīl hāw b-pūmhōn: w-paḥā b-qālhōn ṣālēyn lākh.

their tongue is treacherous in their mouth, and with a snare in their voice they lie in wait for you.'

hāydēyn emar eramyā: shevqath ba-ytī shevqath yārtūthī.

Then Jeremiah said: 'I have forsaken my house, I have forsaken my inheritance;

Alors Jérémie dit : « J'ai abandonné ma maison, j'ai abandonné mon héritage ;

qap l-ʾramyā d-arfī kul: w-vātar māryā ezal (h)wā.

it was fitting for Jeremiah to release all, and to go after the Lord.'

hwāth lam yārtūthī āp ṭōhmī: aykh aryā srīḥā b-da-b-rā.

'My inheritance,' he said, 'and my kin also, have become to me like a roaring lion in the wilderness,

w-enā aykh emrā ʿerqēth: d-eplaṭ men dēvā yaʿnā.

and I, like a lamb, have fled, that I might escape the ravening wolf.'

ḥzī l-men dāmyā ʿlaymūtā: d-hākhwāth tedaʿ nūṭārāh.

See to what youth may be likened, that so you may learn its keeping,

eṣūrākh da-l-mōn dāmēyt: b-gāw zavnā da-ʿlaymūtākh.

I will portray you — to what you are like — in the season of your youth.

eḥāwēykh b-aydā napshā: b-hānā zavnā qām a(n)t.

I will show you by what likeness you stand at this time,

d-zūhārā zahyā teshkaḥ: mā d-ḥāōīthākh demwāthākh.

so that you may find clear warning, when I show you your image.

aykh d-temle ḥvāshē ḥūpnaykh: wa-ghmūrtā tsīm ba-mṣaʿthā.

As when you fill your palms with coals, and set an ember in their midst,

w-teṣbe l-māwbālū nūrā: men āghūrsā l-āghūrsā.

and wish to carry fire from one ember to another,

kad ʿalʿālā men kul d-ūkh: nāpḥā d-tedlaq tesap bākh.

while a whirlwind blows from every side to kindle it — it will consume you —

wa-mʿadrā rūḥā l-nūrā: w-nāshmā d-taḥēyh w-tesbakh bākh.

and the wind aids the fire, breathing to give it life, and it will catch upon you.

hākhwāth ṭāryān ba-ʿlaymē: āp rūḥē da-rghīghāthā.

So also the winds of desire hover among the young.

w-ʿelthā bāʿēyn hadāmē: nsīpūn nsayṭūn ḥūshābayk.

and the members seek occasion, to seize and to drag off your thoughts.

la-ḥvāshē dāmē paghrā: wa-l-nūrā regthā b-ghāwēh.

The body is like coals, and desire is fire within it,

w-mashvā zʿōrā maḥe lāh: elā sāgē nūṭārāh.

and a small breath fans it alive, yet its safekeeping requires much.

w-aykh tūv da-b-yāwmā d-mashvā: shrāgā mārākh netel lākh.

and just as on a day of wind your lord gives you a lamp,

wa-b-da-b-rā w-ḥūrbā neshdēykh: d-men athrā l-ḥavrēh tēzal.

wa-shrāghā mānāw ḥaylēh: da-nʿaze qdām ʿalʿālā.

rāzā da-ḥvūshyā naṭrēh: wa-b-rā ʿavdēh l-barth perʿōn.

The mystery of confinement preserved him, and made him a son to Pharaoh's daughter.

kad nāprīn rakhshā b-ḥēpā: w-qārōkhā shre la-d-vārā.

while the horses race in swift career, and the driver gives rein to speed,

that, if the earth were dry, he might go out; but if not, he would remain in his confinement.

w-nepōq neḥze d-lā nagīv: ʿāūlā men apaī tēbēyl.

and let it go forth to see whether wickedness has not dried up from the face of the world.

w-lā qal māmōlā d-ʿāūlā: da-khmā d-ātē hāw ʿāshan.

and the flood of iniquity has not abated, for the more it comes, the fiercer it grows.

l-māmōlā zavnā hwā lēh: ḥṭāhē b-khlshāʿ ʾītayhōn.

For the flood there was a set time; but sins exist at every hour.

ʿdamā d-ātā sharīrtā: ḥzā nōḥ d-arʿā nagīvā.

Until the true sign came, Noah saw that the earth was dry;

Jusqu'à ce que vînt le signe véritable, Noé vit que la terre était sèche ;

lā ptaḥ tarʿā d-kēwelēh: d-lā neshtakath ʿam b-īshē.

he did not open the door of his ark, lest he be found among the wicked.

māmōlā araḥ w-ya(h)v: l-kēnā d-nepōq wa-nhalekh.

The flood withdrew and gave leave to the righteous to go out and walk free,

ʿāūlā athrā lā yāhv: da-nhalekh nāsh naqdāīth.

but wickedness gives no man room to walk in innocence.

hā rūḥqūdhshā geshat lākh: geshā d-arʿā d-lā neghbat.

Behold, the Holy Spirit has given you warning that the earth has not yet dried.
