w-amīn methḥape w-ābēdh: shvīlā trīṣā men ʾūrḥā.

Always the straight path is hidden and lost from the road,

Et sans cesse se cache et se perd le sentier droit, loin de la route ;

meṭlhānā āp dāwīdh: meṣʿath ʾūrḥā qāʿē (h)wā.

for this reason David too cried out in the middle of the road,

alepaynī māryā ʾūrḥākh: d-kasyūh gallē d-ḥūshābaī.

"Teach me, O Lord, your way, for the waves of my thoughts have hidden it."

shvīlā hāw da-zʿōrē ʿbarw bēh: w-lā shḥīq w-īdhīʿ l-sagyēē.

It is a path that few have walked, and it is not worn nor known to many.

lewyā b-ʿī lākh yādhōʿā: d-lā tesṭe lākh men gāwēh.

Seek for yourself a knowing guide, lest you stray from within it.

lā ʾīth gshāpā ba-shvīlākh: aykh d-āplā l-neshrā b-āar.

There is no track on your path, just as there is none for the eagle in the air,

Il n'y a pas de trace sur ton sentier, comme il n'y en a pas non plus pour l'aigle dans l'air,

w-lā ʾīth gshāḥā b-mardītākh: d-aykh d-āplā l-elpā b-yamā.

nor is there a trail on your course, just as there is none for a ship on the sea.

et il n'y a pas de sillage sur ton parcours, comme il n'y en a pas non plus pour le navire sur la mer.

lā ḥrīthā b-reghlā ʾūrḥākh: aykh d-āplā d-ḥewyā b-shōʿā.

Your way leaves no mark of foot, just as none is left by a serpent on a rock.

madhʿā hāw pārōḥā shvīlākh: d-lā metdarkān ʾūrḥātēh.

Your path is a flying mind, whose ways cannot be tracked.

aʿtartānī aḥā b-sharbākh: ḥakemtānī āp āwtartānī.

You have enriched me, brother, with your discourse; you have made me wise and also profited me.

Tu m'as enrichi, mon frère, par ton discours ; tu m'as rendu sage et tu m'as aussi profité.

neshwe da-b-yōm ḥadawāthā: neḥze b-nūhrā la-ḥdhādē.

May we be worthy, on the day of joys, to see one another in the light.

ṣēdaī ṣdaī ʾō shavrā: l-aykā pāhē reʿyānākh.

"Come to me, come to me, O child: where does your mind wander?"

« Viens à moi, viens à moi, ô enfant, où erre ton esprit ? »

mīthā l-karkhā lā ʿāal: la-mdhī(n)tākh men ḥāar a(n)t.

A dead man does not enter the city: why do you look toward your city?

b-gāwpā da-sbarthā d-lāūkh: men gāw yamā w-mīthā a(n)t.

In the hull of hope that wearies you, you are dead in the midst of the sea,

w-mīthā memthōm lā mḥashev: l-ʿūmrā l-meʿal wa-l-shaynā.

and a dead man never thinks of entering his dwelling and finding rest.

l-mā pgaʿ bākh mīthā emathī: da-l-yathbā d-neʿōl zāaḥ.

When did a dead man ever meet you, who trembles to enter his own dwelling?

w-a(n)t aykanā kad mīth a(n)t: karkh l-meḥzā meshtanēyt.

and how is it that, though you are dead, you long to see the city?

d-lā dēyn qāṭʿān ʿellāthākh: qāṭʿān lākh men rabūtākh.

Yet your pretexts do not run out: they arise for you out of your own greatness.

wa-khbar ʿelthā teʿre lī: d-la-ʾḥūkh bāʿēyt da-ttalmedh.

And perhaps this excuse will occur to me: that you wish to teach your brother.

qshe hāw menākh ʾō ḥalāshā: ʿālmā la-mtalmādhūtēh.

The world is too hard for you to teach, O weak one,

w-ēṣūr lākh ḥadh āghōnā: d-neshrā w-nūnā da-ḥze lī.

and I will depict for you a contest of an eagle and a fish that I once saw.

nūnā ba-prāth meshtʿe (h)wā: wa-mshāwar (h)wā ʿal mayā.

A fish was sporting in the Euphrates, leaping upon the waters,

neshrā dēyn ḥadh gāzal (h)wā: d-neḥōth naʿdaywhī mā da-shwar.

and an eagle was watching, to swoop down and snatch it whenever it leapt.

w-kad taqlāh neshrā l-ʾūrḥēh: w-mashaḥ ṭāwrā d-maḥattēh.

And when the eagle had weighed its course, and measured the extent of its descent,

wa-ḥzā w-argesh da-b-maḥtēh: la-shwārtēh d-nūnā nāwraʿ.

and saw and sensed that in its descent it would meet the fish's leap,

hāydēyn gepāwhī esar (h)wā: w-aykh kēpā nḥeth men āar.

then it bound its wings and dropped from the air like a stone,

w-ba-shwārtēh d-nūnā ʿapqēh: w-qath bēh ṭeprāōhī malyāīth.

and in the fish's leap it seized it, and sank its claws fully into it.

ḥāza (h)wayt da-qshe nūnā: men neshrā b-melā d-mayā.

I saw that the fish was stronger than the eagle, in the fullness of the waters,

ḥdā d-āp rabā ʾītawhī (h)wā: w-da-b-gāw ḥesnēh qāēm (h)wā.

seeing it was also great, and stood within its own stronghold.

l-besh nūnā zaynā d-mayā: w-neshrā shlaḥ zaynā d-rūḥā.

The fish had put on the armor of the water, but the eagle had put off the armor of the air,

d-tahrā (h)wā hān ḥezwānā: w-dāmē l-d-īlākh ḥalāshā.

so that this sight was a wonder, and resembles your own case, O weak one.

nḥeth da-nṣūdh neshrā w-ṣādhūhī: w-lāw aykh da-sbar estaʿrat.

The eagle came down to hunt, and was itself caught; it did not turn out as it had supposed.

d-āp lākh hākhwāth teghdash lākh: elā tēḥōdh tarʿītākh.

The same thing will happen to you too, unless you hold fast your mind.

nūnā l-neshrā mzatep (h)wā: āp da-nḥanqēh maṭī (h)wā.

The fish was dragging the eagle down, and had nearly succeeded in drowning it,

wa-mpaṣyānā d-estaqbal: sharī gāar la-thrayhōn.

but a deliverer who happened by began to shoot at both of them.

rash gepāwhī w-rēshēh ba-l-ḥōdh: mdhīq (h)wā l-ʿal men mayē.

The tips of its wings, and its head alone, were peering up above the water,

w-qāl yalaltā d-pūṣāyā: men ʾūlṣānēh aylel (h)wā.

and it wailed a cry of deliverance out of its distress.

ethā l-mettāwyānūtā: w-ṣābē (h)wā l-methpalāṭū.

It came to repentance, and wished to escape.

w-ṭeprāwhī nakhlāyhī da-b-nūnā: aykh b-avārā srīkhān (h)waī.

But its treacherous claws were caught fast in the fish, as though set in lead.

hā ʿdamā l-hārkā d-īlākh: men sharbā d-neshrā w-nūnā.

Behold, up to this point is your portion of the story of the eagle and the fish;

Voici, jusqu'ici est ta part du récit de l'aigle et du poisson ;

eshtaʿēywhī rūḥānāīth: l-hān ḥezwānā yaqīrā.

let me relate spiritually this weighty vision.

que je raconte spirituellement cette vision grave.

hāydēyn nūnā eshtahī: w-neshrā d-rāʿāwhī rāmē (h)wā.

Then the fish grew faint, while the eagle kept throwing its wings about it,

w-aykh da-b-gepā saḥāyā: l-wa-ʿdā d-yavshā qārēv (h)wā.

and, as though swimming with its wing, it drew near to the meeting place of dry land.

ṣaydēh b-ṭeprāwhī maqath (h)wā: w-vāthrēh d-neshrā gāar (h)wā.

It held its prey firmly in its claws, while behind the eagle the archer shot.

da-b-rēh w-asqēh men ʿūmqā: wa-b-rāwmā d-arʿā klēh.

It led it and brought it up from the depth, into the height above all the earth.

raḥmē l-ādām ethkapanw: w-shadarw bāthrēh la-mshīḥā.

mercy hungered for Adam, and sent Christ after him,

d-neḥōth men athrā shghīshā: la-shqīpā d-nūhrā ndalēywhī.

that he might come down from the troubled region, to draw him up to the cliff of light.

dām hāw nahrā ʿāvōrā: l-hānā zavnā ʿāvōrā.

The passing river is like this passing age,

w-nāshā d-bēh l-nūnē dāmēyn: da-b-ghāw gallē maʿmarhōn.

and the people in it are like fish, whose dwelling is amid the waves.

nḥeth māran ba-d-mūth neshrā: d-lādām ndale men ʿūmqā.

Our Lord came down in the likeness of an eagle, to draw Adam up out of the depth,

kanesh ḥaylēh pārōḥā: w-beskaym yūqrā ettaḥtī.

he gathered in his flying power, and in the guise of a burden came down low.

ṣadēh l-ādām w-aqeth bēh: natpēh ṣaydēh yaqīrā.

He hunted Adam and sank his claws into him, his heavy catch drew him down.

mathḥūhī tūv aykh da-l-neshrā: ʿal ʾīlānā bar nahrā.

They stretched him out again, as they do an eagle, upon a tree beside the river.

neshrā mthīḥ (h)wā ʿal may: wa-mshīḥā ʿal bar mayē.

The eagle was stretched out over the waters, and Christ over the son of the waters.

shdā d-rāʿāwhī l-ʿal men mayā: aykh neshrā ʿal ḥaṣ nahrā.

He threw his arms above the waters, like an eagle over the bank of the river,

w-ya(h)v (h)wā qālā ba-ṣlīvā: ēyl ēyl shūlām āghōnā.

and gave voice on the cross: "Eli, Eli" — the end of the contest,

aykh neshrā d-ya(h)v (h)wā qālā: meṣʿath nahrā b-ʾūlṣānēh.

like the eagle that gave a cry in the middle of the river, in its distress.

ṣaydēh qadī aykh neshrā: l-rāwmā ḥaṭpēh l-yaqīrā.

Like the eagle, he sanctified his prey; he snatched the heavy one up to the height,

wa-mṭā l-māwtā aykh neshrā: w-ʾīdhā b-ṣaydā lā arfī.

and he came to death like the eagle, yet his hand did not let go of his prey.

w-aykanā d-lā (h)wā b-gabā: ḥrēnā shbaq neshrā gepāwhī.

And just as, when it was not on some other side, the eagle would spread its wings,

w-kad ʿap enōn bēh yaqar: wa-pshaṭ wa-praḥ aykh da-ṣvā.

and when it wrapped them around itself, it grew heavy, then spread them out and flew as it willed,

hākanā bēh hwā ḥaylā: pārōḥā b-neshrā mshīḥā.

so was the flying power in him — Christ within the eagle.

w-kad ḥezwā d-nāshā men l-bar: alāhā gmīrā men l-gāw.

For while outwardly the appearance was of a man, inwardly he was perfect God,

Car tandis qu'au-dehors l'apparence était d'un homme, au-dedans il était Dieu parfait,

āp gepēh d-neshrā bēh hāw: w-meṭul ṣydā ʿāp lēh.

so too the eagle's wing was in him, and for the sake of the prey he wrapped it about himself.

mā d-karkēh ntaʿ ṣēydh ʿūmqā: parsēh ettrīm la-shqīpā.

When it wrapped him about, it plunged toward the depth; its talon was lifted up to the cliff.

neshrā yūqrā shāal lēh: d-ṣaydā neḥōth nayta lēh.

The eagle asked a burden of itself, that it should go down and bring up its prey,

w-hāw d-ʿal āar ṭāp (h)wā: mā da-ṣvā ntaʿ aykh kēpā.

and he who was floating upon the air, when he willed, plunged down like a stone.

hākanā neshrā d-neshrē: ʿaf evrāwhī wa-shgar wa-nḥeth.

So the eagle of eagles wrapped his limbs about him, cast himself down, and descended,

ṣādh l-ādām wa-pshaṭ gepāwhī: wa-praḥ wa-shrā ba-shmayā.

he caught Adam, spread out his wings, and flew and dwelt in the heavens.

qrī kthābē aykh d-ʾītayhōn: d-lā ndhāwdhūnākh qālayhōn.

Read the scriptures as they truly are, lest their voices disturb you,

b-ʿī b-hōn qālē d-thūlmādākh: d-lā b-kul qālīn tephē lākh.

seek in them the voices of your instruction, lest you go astray at every voice.

alāhā da-l-kul neshkaḥ: l-kul eskēym ya(h)v nāmōsā.

God, who is capable of all things, gave a law to every form of life,

d-ba-mṣīdtā d-qālāwhī nṣūd: l-khlnāsh b-athrā d-qāam bēh.

that with the net of his voices he might catch everyone in the place where he stands.

d-yāthqāwhī aykh arʿā (h)ī: da-b-kul mēkhlān asīnā.

His covenant is like the earth, which is well supplied with every kind of food:

lā klmedem ākēl a(n)t: āplā kul qāl d-īlākh hāw.

you do not eat everything, nor is every voice for you.

mēkhūltā gmīrtā d-īlākh: hādē d-tekhpōr b-qnōmākh.

Your perfect food is this: that you deny yourself,

yaqar l-avūkh wa-l-emkh: hānā qālā aykh ḥalvā hāw.

"Honor your father and your mother" — this voice is like milk.

kul pūqdān aykh kul ʿeqār: pūqdānākh d-īlākh la-ḥmā hāw.

Every commandment is like every root, but your own commandment is bread.

yūlpānākh sagī mītar: aykh la-ḥmā men kul ʿesbyn.

Your teaching is far more excellent, like bread above every herb.

d-īlākh avūkh alāhā hāw: w-emākh ʿēdtā l-hōn yaqar.

Your father is God, and your mother is the Church: honor them.

l-khlēh ʿālmā ethamrat: d-yaqar l-avūkh gāvōlākh.

To all the world it was said: "Honor your father, your maker."

en tūv shāmaʿ a(n)t da-khthīv: d-ṭar bērī pūqdānā d-avūkh.

And if you hear again what is written: "Keep, my son, the commandment of your father,"

w-lā teṭʿe nāmōs emākh: b-ʿī meṭul men ethamrat.

and "do not forget the law of your mother," ask concerning whom it was said.

yāwsep gēyr ezdaban (h)wā: wa-nḥeth (h)wā l-bēyth meṣrāyē.

For Joseph was sold, and went down to the house of the Egyptians,

l-(h)ī arʿā d-sagīīn bāh: alāhēyh men ʿāmōrēyh.

to that land in which its gods outnumbered its inhabitants.

ḥadh l-ʿesrā sāgedh (h)wā: w-ʿesrā la-mā alāhīn.

One man worshiped ten gods, and ten men, a hundred gods,

w-athrā (h)wā d-yatīrīn (h)wāw: alāhāwhī men yatāvāwhī.

and it was a land whose gods outnumbered its dwellers.

wa-d-lā netdāwadh ṭalyā: men (h)ī deḥlath avāhāwhī.

And so that the young man should not be shaken from the fear of his fathers,

w-neshre lebēh la-ptakhrē: wa-l-dheḥlāthā d-meṣrāyē.

and let his heart loose to the idols and the objects of dread of the Egyptians,

ṭar lam pūqdānā d-avūkh: pūqdānēh d-yaʿqōv aynāw.

"Keep," he says, "the commandment of your father" — what then was Jacob's commandment?

w-lā teṭʿe nāmōs emākh: nāmōsāh d-rāḥēyl mānāw.

"And do not forget the law of your mother" — what was the law of Rachel?

hānāw pūqdānēh d-yaʿqōv: da-fqadh (h)wā w-emar la-b-nāwhī.

This was Jacob's commandment, which he gave and spoke to his sons:

aʿbarūn lam alāhē: nūkhrāyē men ba-ynaykōn.

"Put away," he said, "the foreign gods from among you."

w-nāmōsāh d-rāḥēyl hānāw: d-shāṭat ṣalmē d-bēyth lāvān.

And this was the law of Rachel: that she despised the images of Laban's house,

Rachel utterly disgraced the idols and the images,

la-ʿyādāh d-rāḥēyl qārē: nāmōsāh aykh nāsh nēmar.

Her custom he calls her law, as one might well say.

hānā (h)wā ʿyādēh da-plān: ṭar lam pūqdānēh d-avūkh.

"This," he says, "was so-and-so's custom" — "keep the commandment of your father."

w-lā teṭʿe ʿyādāh d-emākh: l-yāwsep emar d-aykh emēh.

"And do not forget your mother's custom" — of Joseph it is said that he was like his mother:

"These are fitting," it is said, "for your head," and a chain was upon your neck,

aykh yāwsep en sharīr a(n)t: l-bar ḥāar a(n)t men da-l-ghāw.

If you are faithful like Joseph, you look outward from within,

Si tu es fidèle comme Joseph, tu regardes vers l'extérieur depuis l'intérieur,

w-aykh yōḥanān en tehwe: men ḥūrbā lā ʿāl a(n)t.

and if you become like John, you do not come in from the wilderness.

If you are resolute like the son of Rachel, you do not turn back for your garment,

da-ḥzā d-malbakh lēh l-vāshēh: nakhpā ʿarṭel ʿārēq (h)wā.

for when he saw that his garment held him fast, the chaste one fled naked.

ḥlīṣā pāaḥ men shaynā: w-dāwyā ʿāal neshtakath.

The valiant one flees from ease; but the wretched one is found entering it.

paghrā da-nḥāshā ettzīʿ: w-paghrā d-mayā methhalal.

A body of bronze trembled; yet a body of water boasts.

la-syāghā d-sanyā dām: ʿālmā sagī ʿūrzālē.

The world is like a hedge of bramble, full of briers,

w-sagyān nēyn ʿūryātēh: d-ʿūmrā yatīr men sanyā.

and its thorns are many — the dwelling's more than the bramble's.

ʿadh methparaq a(n)t men ḥadh: mettḥedh a(n)t lākh b-sagyēē.

While you free yourself from one, you are caught fast by many.

b-sanyā d-teʿbar dāḥēl a(n)t: l-ʿūmrā d-teʿōl gāzam a(n)t.

You are afraid to pass through the bramble; yet you resolve to enter the dwelling.

If you have hands enough to pass through the hedge of bramble,

lā tāwpe la-mparāqū: men ʿūryātēh hadāmayk.

you will not manage to free your limbs from its thorns.

pūmaī sanyā sagīīn: wa-mṭayvīn aykh d-la-mṣādākh.

The mouths of the bramble are many, and ready as if to snare you.

en men hānā pālēṭ a(n)t: pūmē ḥrānē ʿārēyn lākh.

If you escape from this one, other mouths confront you;

Si tu échappes à celle-ci, d'autres bouches t'affrontent ;

hākhwāth sagī yatīrīn: paḥaī ʿālmā l-ʿālōlāwhī.

likewise, far more numerous are the snares of the world for those who dwell in it,

d-ʿadh men ḥadh methparaq a(n)t: b-ʿesrā w-ʿesrīn methpakrat.

for while you are freed from one, you are bound by ten and twenty.

aykh da-nʿadadh nāsh ʿamrā: w-bēyth syāgē d-sanyā neʿbar.

As when a man drives his wool through a hedge of bramble,

d-kul pūmā nātēsh menēh: wa-khmā d-āzēl hāw gāmar.

every mouth tears at it, and the further it goes, the more it is spent —

hākanā kmā d-ʿābar nāsh: b-ʿālmā sāgēyn ṭūrāpāwhī.

so too, the further a man passes through the world, the more his troubles increase.

b-qalīl qalīl methnatash: ʿdamā d-ṭaʿnēh nestapaq.

Little by little he is stripped, until his burden is used up.

sanyā hāw ʿūmrā b-ʿūrzālāwhī: sagī mpakar ʿālōlāwhī.

The dwelling is a bramble-bush in its briers; it greatly ensnares those within it,

b-yāwsep eḥdat ʿūrītēh: shbaq marṭūṭēh w-ethpaṣī.

In Joseph, nakedness took hold; he left his garment behind and was delivered.

hānā īdaʿ d-nethpalaṭ: praq ba-l-vāshēh nakhpūtēh.

This one knew he must escape; he redeemed his chastity with his garment.

mūshē da-mṭāyhī ʿūrītēh: l-da-b-rā ʿraq (h)wā men meṣrēyn.

Moses, when his deed was exposed, fled to the wilderness from Egypt.

shbaq malkūtā d-bēyth perʿōn: d-hāw ba-qnōmēh nethpaṣe.

He left the kingdom of Pharaoh's house, that he himself might be delivered,

lā ethqarav ṣēydh sanyā: da-shqīl (h)wā lēh nesyānēh.

He did not draw near the bramble, for its trial was reserved for him.

dāwīdh da-ḥzā l-maʿbartā: d-memraṭ mārṭā men klnāsh.

David, when he saw the passage that strips everyone bare,

David, voyant le passage qui dépouille chacun,
