w-lā kad ʿārqat men ṣaʿrā: la-ʿvādēh d-ṣaʿrā teqrōv.

Do not, while fleeing from insult, draw near to the deed of insult,

d-lā kad tarḥeq men qālē: tesbōl enōn ba-shrārā.

lest, while keeping distant from its words, you commit it in truth.

shūrā d-ḥayē īdaʿtā (h)ī: w-pūrshānā nūghrā d-yāwmē.

The wall of life is knowledge; and discernment, the length of days.

aykh d-āp ṣprā b-īdaʿthāh: magrā ḥaḥēyh w-methnaṭrā.

As even the sparrow, by its knowledge, prolongs its life and is kept safe,

kmā hāw kaī kaylā d-tarʿītāh: d-tērōʿ l-hālēyn nesyōnē.

how great, then, is the measure of its understanding, that it should meet these trials!

kad shadhyā b-ḥēpā w-reʿlā: bēyth sanyā wa-l-vāzīqā.

while it is thrown into haste and trembling, between the foe and the hawk.

gepēyh tesʿōr ba-prāḥāh: ḥashē tethqōl ba-ʿrūqyā.

It tends its wings as it flies, and weighs its sufferings as it flees;

Il soigne ses ailes en volant, et pèse ses souffrances en fuyant ;

b-napshāh tlabev b-ʾūlṣānā: l-aykā tespaq dāwīthā.

in its soul it takes courage amid distress, to find where the afflicted one may find refuge.

etdamā l-ṣprā w-īlap: men ʾūrḥāthāh ḥalāshā.

Liken yourself to the sparrow, and learn, weak one, from its ways,

wa-ghvī lākh ṣaʿrā d-aḥayāk: d-men sāṭānā teshtāwzav.

and choose for yourself your brothers' reproach, that you may be delivered from Satan.

shemrā d-arbʿā d-ʿal aḥē ḥbysh

The fourth memra, concerning brothers who are confined.

men ʿānā sav tūv ḥāwrā: emrā d-māran tamīmā.

Take again, from the flock, an example: the innocent lamb of our Lord,

d-emathī d-aryā nāhēm bāh: aykh la-ghdhīshā kāshē lāh.

that when the lion roars at it, it presses close together like a sheaf;

qui, quand le lion rugit contre lui, se serre comme une gerbe ;

b-qālēh rhīvā w-ʿazīzā: ḥāmlān ʿānā la-ḥdādē.

at his fierce and violent voice, the flock crowd against one another,

w-kul ʿerbā hāwē ḥābēṣ: d-nehwe lēh men gāwāyē.

and every sheep pushes to be among those in the center.

mbaʿṭīn ʿerbē la-ḥdhādē: w-b-sīmn l-hōn b-w-ʿṭāthā.

The sheep jostle one another, and the jostling is pleasant to them;

Les brebis se bousculent l'une l'autre, et la bousculade leur est agréable ;

yādhʿīn enōn d-lā qashyān: aykh shenēh qshīthā d-aryā.

they know these are not cruel, like the cruel tooth of the lion.

mettdīshīn men ḥavrayhōn: d-men sūrḥānā nethnaṭrūn.

They are trodden by their companions, that they may be kept from harm;

Elles sont foulées par leurs compagnes, afin d'être gardées du mal ;

wa-mdaqrīn hānā l-hānā: d-nehwe athrā l-ḥayayhōn.

and they jab one another, that there may be room for their lives.

ba-rāyē d-ʾīth ba-ghzārā: ḥābaṣīn d-neʿlūn d-nettdīshūn.

Those on the outside hasten to enter the fold, that they may be trampled,

w-maḥvīn dāwshā d-ḥadh men ḥadh: d-men ḥabālā nethpaṣōn.

and they love being trampled by one another, that they may be delivered from ruin.

klḥadh menhōn methrabaṣ: d-nēḥōdh athrā gāwāyā.

Each one of them crouches down, to seize the inner place;

Chacune d'elles se blottit, pour saisir la place intérieure ;

kad ḥāzē rvūṣyē tamān: lā kāwēz men da-l-meʿal.

when it sees others crouched there, it does not shrink from entering.

men rwaḥthā da-l-bar ʿārēq: w-l-ʾūlṣānā da-l-ghāw rāhṭ.

It flees from the open space outside, and runs to the affliction within,

d-ba-rwaḥthā ḥayāwhī māwbedh: w-b-ʾūlṣānā mṣyn d-nethnaṭrūn.

for in the open it would lose its life, but in affliction they can be kept safe.

ḥzī men qanyān ḥaywāthā: wa-l-waī neshkaḥ madaʿhēyn.

See what the animals possess, and would that we might find their understanding!

yalap menhēyn b-w-yānā: d-aykan teghmōr pūrshānākh.

Learn understanding from them, how to perfect your discernment.

Apprends d'eux l'intelligence, comment parfaire ton discernement.

ṭʿan bērī b-w-ʿṭtākh wa-shthōq: d-men ʿāūlā nṭīrā napshākh.

Bear, my son, your jostling, and be silent, that your soul may be kept from wrongdoing,

d-yāshtākh sagī tehne lākh: d-men sāṭānā pālaṭ a(n)t.

for being trodden underfoot shall greatly profit you, since you escape from Satan.

lā kad tekhōz men la-hgā: ʿal paḥtā d-nūrā tepel.

Do not, in shrinking from mere talk, fall into the pit of fire,

w-lā kad men rsīsē teʿrōq: kēpē d-ba-rdā nemṭyānākh.

nor, fleeing from a few drops, let hailstones overtake you.

ʿṣī yaṣrākh w-aḥōdh b-aḥūkh: l-yūthrānākh qāwā l-wātēh.

Master your impulse, and hold fast to your brother; for your own gain, remain close to him.

rūʿāmākh ʿdamā l-melthā: lā dēyn nehwe ba-ʿvādā.

Let your complaint go only so far as words; let it not become deed.

b-ʿeldvāvākh en māwtar lākh: ṭpōs bēh da-l-mā tethkaḥadh.

If your enemy profits you, take a lesson from him, lest you be brought low;

Si ton ennemi te profite, prends de lui une leçon, de peur que tu ne sois abaissé ;

qap l-aḥūkh kad dāēsh lākh: aykh d-āp ṣprā alepthākh.

cling to your brother when he tramples you, as the sparrow, too, has taught you.

āp ṣeprā l-pūrnās ḥaḥēyh: emathī d-neṣā rādēp lāh.

The sparrow too, for the sake of its life, when the hawk chases it,

en kūbā lā teshkaḥ lāh: w-teḥze nāshā ṭepsat bēh.

if it finds no thornbush, and sees a man, it clings to him.

shāryā lāh b-ʿeldvāvūtā: kābashā lāh l-dheḥlath nāshā.

It lets go of its enmity, and overcomes its fear of man;

Il abandonne son inimitié, et surmonte sa crainte de l'homme ;

b-sānāh ʿāvdā bēyth gāwsā: d-ḥaḥēyh tshāwzev men māwtā.

in the one it hates it makes its refuge, that it may save its life from death.

ʿārqā men pūm bāzīqā: da-b-kenpā d-gavrā teṭpōs.

It flees the mouth of the hawk, to cling to the hem of a man's garment,

men mabūʿā d-sūrādāh: menēh shātayā l-w-bāvā.

from the very spring of its own terror, it drinks courage.

kāvshā napshāh da-thsaybar: ḥezwā d-ḥīlā d-ba-rnāshā.

It subdues its own soul to endure the fearful sight of man,

w-ba-l-ḥōdh men neṣā teplaṭ: da-l-avdānā māḥē lāh

only that it may escape the hawk, which drives it toward destruction,

shāyāpā krōmāh mshāwḥadtā: w-ātayā l-meṭpā ba-l-b-w-shā.

though its dark plumage be entirely worn away, it comes to cling within a garment.

The arm that keeps swinging does not weary; but let it rest, and you have wearied it.

ṭmīr hāw nyāḥēh ba-shḥāqēh: wa-b-nāwpēh mnāḥ men shelyēh.

Its rest is hidden within its toil; it rests more in its motion than in its stillness.

shapā mabūʿaī hāwnākh: men rūghzā w-men ṣōḥyāthā.

Cleanse the springs of your mind from anger and from mockery,

wa-ḥsāmā syānā saryā: neṣṭalal men maḥshavthākh.

and let envy, that foul, rotten mire, be strained out of your thoughts.

ʿal ʾīdā d-ʿīrē ʿābarā: ṣlōtā d-teḥze l-alāhā.

By the hand of the watchers, prayer passes through, that it may behold God,

d-aykh devḥā saryā ʾītēyh: ṣlōthā d-rāptā ba-ḥsāmā.

For like a rotten sacrifice is a prayer soaked in envy.

for a prayer weighted with obstruction cannot fly to the heights.

da-nqarvūnāh rdīḥānē: l-rēḥḥ tarʿūtā l-rabūthā.

nūrā nūkhrāytā ḥemtā (h)ī: b-pīrmākh menāh lā tarme.

Wrath is a strange fire; cast none of it into your censer.

d-ḥal men hāw medem da-hwā: la-b-naī ahrōn d-amraḥw (h)wāw.

Fear that thing which befell the sons of Aaron, who were presumptuous.

The fire of holiness, too, is love; in it, offer the sacrifice of your prayer,

d-aykh rēyḥā d-besmē ṭābē: āp (h)ī nūrākh teshtabaḥ.

that your fire, too, like the scent of sweet spices, may win praise.

l-nūrā d-ḥūbā qeṭmā layt: āplā l-dhelqāh tenānā.

The fire of love has no ash, nor does its flame give off smoke.

ʾīōv hākēyl d-argesh (h)wā: d-āp halkhātēh methmanyān.

Job, therefore, who perceived that even his steps were being numbered,

yāwmāthā methḥashav (h)wā: w-hāydēyn reghlāwhī marḥesh (h)wā.

reckoned his days, and only then set his feet in motion.

sām āp ʾīdēh ʿal pūmēh: d-lā nāwsep la-mmalālū.

He also laid his hand upon his mouth, that he might say no more,

d-yādaʿ d-āp ḥūshbān mlē: hāwē l-ḥarthā ʿam nāshā.

ḥavshāh (h)wā l-meltēh ʾīōv: w-asrāh b-shethqā l-īdaʿtēh.

Job confined his speech, and bound his understanding in silence,

qʿā nvī d-aqīm māryā: nāṭōrā l-pūmī wa-l-spwātēī.

The prophet cried out that the Lord set a guard over my mouth and my lips.

they kept their word in silence, that it might not go forth among troublemakers.

But the field whose clods are sealed keeps its freshness;

Mais le champ dont les mottes sont scellées garde sa fraîcheur ;

its strength is stored within it by its moisture, and it brings its seed to ripeness at harvest.

d-gallē shghyshē d-ḥūshābaykh: ʿal kul ʾūrḥān shādēyn lākh.

for the turbulent waves of your thoughts fling you onto every road.

maḥshūlē da-rghīghāthā: maṭʿēyn lākh ʾūrḥā d-kēnē.

The billows of desires make you stray from the path of the righteous,

w-ṭāmrīn l-ʿūhdānā ṭāvā: d-hwyū ʾūrḥā d-tagārē.

and they bury the good remembrance, which is the way of merchants.

renyā mīnā d-alāhā: hwyū shvīlā d-mardītākh.

Constant meditation on God — that is the path of your journey;

La méditation constante sur Dieu — c'est le sentier de ta marche ;

kmā da-mkatar b-īdaʿthākh: b-ʾūrḥā d-ḥayē rādē a(n)t.

as long as it stays fixed in your mind, you walk in the path of life.

en ʿal ḥūshāvā ḥrēnā: daʿ lākh da-shdākh men ʾūrḥā.

If you turn to another thought, know that it has thrown you off the road;

Si tu te tournes vers une autre pensée, sache qu'elle t'a jeté hors de la route ;

ʿṭōp ʿṭōp lākh men qūrbā: w-pel b-ʿūhdānā d-alāhā.

turn back, turn back at once, and fall into remembrance of God.

nqāwe bākh renyā shapyā: w-lā npīsh madʿākh men renyēh.

Let clear meditation abide in you, and let your mind not grow slack from its meditation,

d-maṭrap temrā en tevhal: renyā ḥrēnā masge lākh.

for confusion stirs if you are dismayed; another thought multiplies upon you.

madʿā hadīā nhe lākh: d-layt lēh temrā da-nthāwʿākh.

Let a guiding mind be yours, that has no confusion to lead you astray,

b-hādē ʾūrḥā d-lā la-ʾyā: renyā ṭāvā teṭar bākh.

on this road that does not grow weary, may good meditation keep guard in you.

ḥūshābē ḥrānē d-ātēyn: kānshīn d-w-kath qadamāyē.

Other thoughts that come gather into the place of the former ones,
