hāw maghdlā shemʿā b-nā (h)wā: w-lā (h)wā tūqpā d-ga(n)bārē.

That tower, fame built it, not the strength of the mighty,

eshtqel shemʿā men tamān: wa-ḥrav wa-ṣdhī maghdalhōn.

fame was taken away from there, and their tower lay ruined and waste.

pālaḥ hāw w-ʿāml aḥaī: shemʿā yatīr men ḥaylā.

Fame labors and toils, my brothers, more than strength,

d-aykh d-alpan hāw benyānā: d-men b-laī shemʿā hā ḥarīv.

as that building taught us, that from want of fame it lies, behold, in ruin.

bāblāyē shemʿā eshkaḥīw: w-hā shāōḥīn benyānayhōn.

The Babylonians found fame, and behold, their buildings still stand tall,

nedhḥal da-l-mā nethqadam: ba-ḥpīṭūtā d-ʿamlayhōn.

let us fear lest we be outstripped in the diligence of their labor.

ʿeṣyānē pāʿlē b-īshē: lā neshtakhḥūn ṣēdaykōn.

Let no rebellions, evil workers, be found among you,

ardhekhlā ḥpīṭā shemʿā: nehwe pālḥā b-da-yrayrōn.

let diligent fame be a builder, laboring in your cell.

wa-b-ʿāw men mārē ḥṣādā: d-napeq pāʿlē la-ḥṣādēh.

And ask of the Lord of the harvest, that he send workers out to his harvest,

wa-nḥayel nūhrā d-ʿaynaī: d-thūv ʾṣūr lākh b-w-yā.

and strengthen the light of my eyes, that I may again portray for you a comfort.

nāṭōrē l-rēshēh aqīm: mā w-ʿesrīn rēshaī ḥaylē.

He set up guards for his person: a hundred and twenty chiefs of forces,

d-henōn nērʿūn ʿūsāqē: w-qālā d-rāwbā lā neshmaʿ.

that they might meet difficulties, and the voice of tumult not be heard,

d-kad neʿshan d-īnā w-nērav: l-wāth ʿesrā w-ʿesrīn nesbōkh.

so that when a dispute grew strong and great, it might be brought to the ten and the twenty,

w-nehwe hāw l-hal men qālē: w-ʿūmrēh b-shelyā nethyaqar.

and he himself would be beyond the clamor, and his dwelling be honored in quiet.

rḥem shavrā ʿūmrā shalyā: d-raḥmūhī malkē pārōshē.

The youth loved a quiet dwelling, which discerning kings have loved,

d-rab hāw shelyā men tāghā: akhmā d-alpākh da-ryāwāsh.

for quiet is greater than a crown, as Darius has taught you.

aykh da-b-da-yrā ʿāmar (h)wā: b-shelyā napshēh mkabesh (h)wā.

As one dwelling in a cell, he subdued his soul in quiet,

kūnāsh hāwnā rāḥēm (h)wā: ḥāwrā l-dāātayn ṣāar (h)wā.

he loved the gathering-in of the mind, and portrayed a likeness for those to come.

ṣūth l-aramyā kad āmar: ʿal neṣḥānā da-b-da-b-rā.

Listen to Jeremiah, as he speaks concerning triumph in the wilderness,

wa-thrōṣ ʾūrḥā aymekā: d-raḥmē l-nāshā methyahbīn.

and make straight the way, wherever mercies are given to man.

eshkaḥ lam raḥmē b-da-b-rā: ʿamā da-plaṭ men ḥarbā.

"He found," it is said, "mercy in the wilderness" — the people who escaped the sword,

he likens peace to the sword, and in the place of mercies, within the wilderness.

ḥadh tūv ḥāwrā men rūḥā: ṣbēyth d-ēpaḥem la-ḥvūshyākh.

One more comparison, from the wind, I wished to liken to your seclusion,

Encore une comparaison, tirée du vent, j'ai voulu l'appliquer à ta réclusion,

that mingles and is knit together, in two — wonder and suffering equally.

ḥzī rūḥā kmā mettṣīdā: w-methḥavshā b-ʾūmānūtā.

See how the wind is hunted, and confined by craft,

wa-mnagedh lāh hedrōlā: w-medem yatīr maqne lāh.

and the pipe draws it to itself, and gains from it yet more.

and that which was without song becomes filled with beautiful song.

men qūkhlāyē qaṭīnē: qāʿāyā qālē ba-sīmē.

From slender pipes it cries out sweet tones,

w-men gāw bezʿē alīṣē: lāshashā naḥtē malālē.

and from narrow openings within, it murmurs soft, gentle speech.

mā d-ʿelat berkat yeldat: qālē rghīgē b-abwbē.

When it enters the joint, it brings forth delightful tones in the pipes,

d-ba-rtēh nepqat āwbedtēh: b-athrā pathyā w-pahāyā.

for its child went forth and undid it, in a place wide and spacious.

ba-ḥvūshyā qnāt ḥalyūtā: w-mā da-phāt lāh ba-da-rtēh.

In confinement it gained sweetness, but when it strayed into an open courtyard,

ennat wa-qʿāt b-abūbē: wa-rwī kenshā d-ḥazāyē.

It moaned and cried out in the pipes, and the crowd of onlookers was enthralled,

hākhwāth ḥashē da-ḥvīshē: ḥshīvīn zmārā l-malakē.

likewise the sufferings of the confined are reckoned as song to the angels,

w-ennāthā d-men kēbayhōn: zmīrāthā nēyn l-rūḥānē.

and the moanings that come from their pains are songs to the spiritual ones.

ḥzī d-āp rūḥā mā d-nepqat: men mānā d-bēh zemrat (h)wāth.

See, even the wind, when it goes forth from the vessel in which it had been singing,

qalīl ṭāwrā lāwē lāh: qālā da-qnāt b-abūvā.

a little longer the sound accompanies it — the voice it had gained in the pipe.

hākanā qalīl zavnā: mkatar bēh ʿyādā nakhpā.

So, for a little while, a modest habit lingers in one,

b-aynā da-ḥvūshyēh marpe: w-pāhē wa-shhēyn pūrshānāwhī.

in whoever relaxes his confinement, and strays, and his discernments grow slack.

mā d-estarṭat (h)ī rūḥā: b-gāw qūkhlāyē alyṣē.

When that wind is confined within the narrow pipes,

maṣraḥ qālāh wēmanān : w-dāwṣā l-ḥērē methpane.

its voice cries out clearly, and [...] (sic), and joy turns toward the freeborn,

athrā rvīṣā maʿtar lāh: mṭāt la-pthāyā ba-da-rtēh.

a cramped place enriches it; but when it reaches breadth in its courtyard,

d-ʾūrḥā d-pathyā wa-rwīḥā: māwbādānītā (h)ī aykh da-khthīv.

for the way that is broad and wide is a way of destruction, as it is written.

hānā rāzā da-ḥvīshā hāw: da-khmā da-ḥvīsh methyatar.

This is the mystery of the confined: the more it is confined, the more it profits,

w-en arpī wa-npaq pāhē: shūprēh b-pehyēh pāēgh lēh.

and if it relaxes and goes out, it strays; its beauty, in its straying, departs from it.

aykh d-pāēgh qālā w-pāēsh: men rūḥā l-bar men mānā.

As the voice fades and ceases, once the wind is outside the vessel,

hākhwāth pāēgh yūthrānā: men pahāyā d-eshtargal.

so likewise profit fades, from the straying of one who has grown lax.

tenḥāthāh d-rūḥā zmārā hāw: w-reṭnāh w-ʾūntāh qīnāthā.

The sighs of the wind are its song, and its murmur and its moan are its melodies,

aykh d-āp tenḥāthā d-sāhdē: hwaī la-zmārā b-kenshayhōn.

as also the sighs of the martyrs became song in their assemblies.

ennathhōn sagī ḥalyā: aykh enntā d-rūḥā b-ghwbē.

Their moaning was very sweet, like the moaning of the wind in the hollows,

w-aykh menē d-ʿal qītārā: d-yāhbān zmārā b-rūṭānā.

and like strings upon a harp, that give forth song through their murmuring.

l-māran mathḥūhī ʿal qaysā: aykh menthā ʿal qītārā.

They stretched our Lord upon the wood, like a string upon a harp,

w-b-w-gānēh w-ʾūntēh w-ḥashēh: hwā zūmārā b-kul ʿammīn.

and his outcry, and his moan, and his suffering, became a song among all peoples.

āp menē ʿal qītārā: kmā da-mthīḥān naṣīḥān.

Even strings upon a harp, the more they are stretched, the clearer they ring,

mā d-ṭrāt enēyn ʾīdhā: ennīī w-ethmaṭī la-zmārā.

when the hand plucks them, they moan, and are brought to song.

āp sāwqā da-b-kul ashīdh: d-lā pērīn hāw b-hūlālā.

Even a vine that spreads out on every side is without fruit in its glory,

ʿāēl yālēp da-nzamar: w-mā da-fhā ṭʿā yūlpānēh.

it goes in and learns to sing; but when it wanders, it forgets its learning.

kad pahī ḥasīr qālā hāw: ʿal ethkanash malel lēh.

While it strays, it is without voice; when it is gathered in, it speaks.

w-mā d-arfī wa-npaq l-āar: āwbedh pērā da-zmārēh.

and when it is let loose and goes out into the air, it loses the fruit of its song.

pathyūtā d-eshtadī bāh: ba-ztēh ṭaʿmēh ba-sīmā.

The breadth into which it was cast stripped it; in confinement its savor was sweet,

d-ettagar b-athrā līṣā: rwaḥthā shalḥat marhāṭāwhī.

for it prospered in a narrow place; open space stripped away its tendrils.

sagī d-tahrā hāw ʾūmānā: hānā d-ʾīthāwhī hedrōlā.

Greatly wondrous is that craftsman, this one who is the pipe-organ,

hādē gvīltā (h)ī d-īdaʿthā: d-ḥāvṣā d-tevre ḥadtāthā.

this is a molding of knowledge, that presses out ever-new forms.

lāw aykh ṣayārā ʾītāwhī: da-mdamyānā hāw ba-ʿvādē.

It is not like a painter, who is but an imitator in his works,

d-mūth bārōyā hāw sūʿrānēh: d-men hāwnā b-re wa-mrakav.

for its activity is like that of the Creator, since from mind it is formed and composed.

ṣayārā lā methraʿe: ṣūrāthā d-lā ḥazyān lēh.

A painter cannot conceive forms that he has not seen,

d-men pārḥāthā w-ḥaywāthā: w-men nāshā d-lāt īdaʿtēh.

from birds and animals, and from people whom he has not known.

hānā dēyn men tarʿītēh: ṣār mānēh aykh bārōyā.

But this one, from his own mind, shapes his instrument, like the Creator,

ḥyānūth tarʿītēh ḥāwī: da-mḥaynā la-d-vārōyā.

showing the life-giving power of his mind, which gives life like the Creator.

yālēdh mapraḥ neʿāmāthā: men karsāthā d-abūvāwhī.

He begets, and sends forth melodies, from the wombs of his pipes,

mshamar yaldāwhī ʿal rūḥā: d-thūv l-mēnēh lā nēthōn.

he sets his offspring upon the wind, so that they never return to his vessel again.

nāsēkh shādē b-gāw ʿūbē: rūḥā shawyath pūrshānē.

He pours forth, casting it into the folds, a wind of varied distinctions,

w-aykh da-b-ṭūrnōs nāgēdh lāh: w-sālāqā b-ṭūpsē sagyēē.

and as with a lathe he draws it, and it rises in many patterns,

aykh d-b-ʾīdē sagīāthā: b-w-gānē d-qālē ṣbaʿ lāh.

as though with many hands he tinges it in the colors of sounds,

w-men npāḥā sharyā w-shawyā: kul neʿmāthā mashmaʿ lākh.

and from a single, steady, even breath, he makes every melody sound for you.

mmadekh qālē d-lā nūrā: ṭʿāmātā d-lā napqāthā.

He forges tones without fire, savors without expense.

nshalem sharban men hānā: wa-nmalel ʿal da-rme lan.

Let us finish our discourse from this, and speak of what has been laid upon us,

neshtōq men mānā d-shelyā: wa-nmalel ʿal nakhpūthā.

let us fall silent about the vessel of quiet, and speak of modesty.

ḥāwrā nsavnan men rūḥā: nshamrīh d-tezmar ba-khnūshyan.

We have taken a comparison from the wind; let us leave it to sing in our assembly,

aykanā d-layt lāh qālā: l-rūḥā d-lā ṭrāt ʿam medem.

just as there is no voice for wind that has not struck against something,

de même qu'il n'y a pas de voix pour le vent qui n'a heurté aucune chose,

hākanā layt lan aghrā: elā ṭrāūn nesyōnē.

so there is no reward for us, unless trials strike us.

ʿeṣyānē w-ʿayṭē klshāʿ: ʿābadīn rāwbā bēyth aḥē.

Disputes and clamors at every hour cause turmoil among brothers,

lā narpōnākh ʾō aḥūn: men bēyth gāwsā l-marḥāqū.

they will not release you, O brother, to go far from the house of refuge,

ḥesnā ḥvīshā w-aḥīdā: mā da-shrā ʿlāwhī gayāsā.

a fortress besieged and held fast, when a marauder encamps against it,

hāwēyn nōn bēh ʿeṣyānē: w-ḥeryānē d-medem medem.

there arise in it disputes and quarrels over this and that,

lā dēyn nāpēq nāsh menēh: meṭul deḥlath shabāyē.

but no one goes out from it, because of fear of captors,

wa-khmā en nāsh nethʿayaṭ: tarʿā d-shūrā lā ʿābar.

and however much one may cry out, he does not pass through the gate of the wall,

ṭāʿnīn ṣaʿrā da-ḥdhādē: b-gāw ḥesnā d-bēh ʾītayhōn.

they bear one another's insults, within the fortress in which they are,

d-ṭāban maḥwātēh d-aḥā: men nūshqātēh d-gayāsā.

for the blows of a brother are better than the kisses of a robber.

men ṣeprā ḥāwrā sav lākh: d-tethqōl ḥashē d-māṭēyn lākh.

Take from the bird a comparison for yourself, that you may weigh the sufferings that come upon you,

b-ʾīdaī men wālē l-mepal: b-yadh aḥūkh āw b-yadh b-īshā.

into whose hands is it fitting to fall: into the hand of your brother, or into the hand of the evil one?

ʾīth pārōshūthā b-ṣeprā: da-mʿadrā lākh en teqnēyh.

There is discernment in the bird, that will help you if you acquire it,

d-āpen masge mdabṣ lāh: lāw aykh neṣā qāṭal lāh.

for although it pricks it much, it does not kill it as a hawk would kill it.

hanī lāh d-w-b-ṣāth sanyā: d-men māwtā bēh methpaṣyā.

Sweet to it are the prickings of the thornbush, for through it, it is delivered from death,

w-ba-sīm lāh ḥashā d-khūbāwhī: d-men nīvā srīḥā pelṭat.

and sweet to it is the pain of its bruises, for it has escaped the ravening beak.

ʾp a(n)t aḥā nevsam lākh: ṣaʿrā w-ḥesdā bēyth aḥaykh.

You too, brother, let it be sweet to you — insult and reproach among your brothers,

Toi aussi, frère, qu'ils te soient doux — l'injure et l'opprobre parmi tes frères,

d-lā tepōq tepel wa-thmūth: b-pūmā d-aryā d-lā raḥmē.

lest you go out, and fall, and die in the mouth of a merciless lion.

saybar pūmē sagyē: d-lā l-avdānā shādēyn lākh.

Endure many mouths, that do not cast you into destruction,

w-men hāw ḥadh pūmā arḥeq: d-ʿāūlā d-mwbedh napshāthā.

and keep far from that one mouth of the wicked one, who destroys souls.

āp ṣprā mā d-etdavṣat: bēyth trēyn ḥashīn methramyā.

The sparrow too, when it is pricked, is cast between two sufferings,

shdēyā napshāh la-pṣīdā: d-men qṭōlā tethraḥaq.

it throws itself into the crack, that it may be kept far from the killer.

b-hāw pāwḥā d-pāraḥ lebāh: sagī mhāwnā tarʿītāh.

In that terror in which its heart flutters, its mind grows very shrewd,

w-lā akhwātan da-b-ḥēpan: l-māwtā napshan shādēynan.

not like us, who in our haste cast our souls to death.

yatīrāīth metṭaksā: ṣprā b-zavnā d-methradhpā.

The sparrow is especially disciplined, at the time when it is pursued,

wa-b-zāwʿā da-mzīʿ napshāh: ṭāʿmā ḥashē b-īdaʿthāh.

and in the trembling that shakes its being, it tastes suffering with understanding.

ba-rhāvtēh w-rahṭēh d-neṣā: tāqlā trayhōn nekhyānē.

In its haste, and in the hawk's pursuit, it weighs both harms,

w-gāvyā da-b-sanyā tevlaʿ: w-taghhe l-nībaī bāzīqā.

and it chooses to be swallowed by the thornbush, rather than be exposed to the beak of the hawk,

qnī lākh aḥā b-īdaʿthākh: hādē ṣvūthā myatartā.

acquire for yourself, brother, in your understanding, this excellent thing,

da-hwayt pārēsh wa-mmashaḥ: w-maghbe l-napshākh yūthrānā:

that you may discern and measure, and choose for your soul the profit:
