rūḥā ḥābēsh hedyōṭā: b-zeqā w-nahrā maʿbar lēh.

The simple man shuts up wind in a skin, and by it crosses the river,

ʿal npāḥā zʿōrā d-ṣāēdh: shādē yūqrā d-hadāmāwhī.

upon the small breath that he has caught, he casts the weight of his limbs.

en nemle ḥlīṣh mānē: w-rūḥā b-gāwēh lā neshdē.

If he tightly fills the skins, and the wind is not let out from within them,

ṭābaʿ lēh da-b-hādh nalep: d-rūḥā zādēq d-teʿmar ban.

he seals them, that by this he may teach: that it is right for the spirit to dwell in us.

rūḥā d-nāplā ba-ḥlīṣā: yūqrā mṭīpā ʿal may.

The wind that fills the tight raft makes the load float upon the water,

hāwyā rkhōvā l-hedhyōṭā: w-ʿābar nahrā d-l-īlāīth.

it becomes a mount for the simple man, and he crosses the river easily.

hākanā en neshre ban: pūrshānā d-rūḥā aḥaī.

So too, my brothers, if the discernment of the spirit dwells in us,

hāw tālē l-yaqīrūtan: w-gashrā la-ʿden hāwē lan.

it lifts up our heaviness, and becomes for us a bridge to Eden.

ḥlīṣā nshīṭā mā d-qabel: rūḥā hwā lēh napshānā.

The stripped skin, once it has received the wind, becomes for it a thing alive,

w-aykh nūnā l-nahrā ṣārē: b-ʿevrā d-may sagyē.

and like a fish it cleaves the river, in the crossing of the many waters.

mle pūmēh rūḥā shādē: ba-ḥlīṣā da-mle mānē.

He fills his mouth and blows into the raft that is full of skins,

w-mashar lēh wa-ʿlāwhī rākēv: w-ʿal shepʿē d-ḥīlē ʿābar.

and makes it fast, and mounts upon it, and crosses over torrents of dread.

pre(d)tā d-rūḥā ṭʿīnā lēh: w-mwtēh d-nahrā dāsh bāh.

A mere puff of wind bears him up, and by it he treads upon the river's death,

kmā kēyth pūrshānē d-rūḥā: l-ʿal men rūḥā nedhbrūnākh.

how much more, then, will the discernments of the Spirit carry you above the wind!

b-nahrā shghīshā nīḥāīth: ʿābar shavrā b-yadh rūḥā.

In a turbulent river, calmly, an infant crosses by means of the wind,

wa-b-ḥēpēh d-ʿālmā b-shelyā: maʿbar ḥayāwhī pārōshā.

and amid the world's rush, quietly, the discerning man carries his life across.

ḥlīṣē nāpḥīn sapānē: w-qāṭrīn b-ḥaṣā da-b-nayhōn.

The boatmen inflate the skins, and bind them at the waist of their children,

w-nāpṣīn shādēyn l-hōn ba-prāth: d-nēlpūn saḥwā ba-d-ḥīlā.

and shaking them, cast them into the Euphrates, that they may learn to swim in fear.

kmā d-rūḥā ʿal ḥaṣayhōn: lā yāhbā l-hōn d-nethḥanqūn.

As long as the wind is upon their loins, it does not let them drown,

and however much the river rages, the children are not sunk.

l-rūḥā mashrīn avāhē: kad tālēyn bāh yaldayhōn.

The fathers trust in the wind, while their children hang upon it,

w-shādēyn l-hōn l-apaī ʿūmqā: kad saḥwā lā yalīpīn.

and cast them toward the depth, while they have not yet learned to swim.

rūḥā elā methḥavshā: āplā mṭīpā yaqīrē.

Unless the wind is confined, it does not make the heavy ones float,

w-hāwnā elā ethkanash: lā mdale lan men ʿapran.

and unless the mind is gathered in, it does not raise us up from our dust.

men da-snīq d-neʿbar nahrā: rūḥēh ḥābēsh ba-ḥlīṣā.

Whoever needs to cross the river shuts up his breath in the skin,

wa-ʿdamā d-qāṭar b-apēyh: lā mashar lāh da-taṭīpīwhī.

and until he has bound it at its mouth, he does not trust it to float him.

ḥvōsh reʿyānākh pārōshā: b-gāw medhyārā d-hadāmayk.

Shut up your mind, O discerning man, within the dwelling of your limbs,

d-teṣre bēh yamā qashyā: d-sīm lākh d-teʿbar l-āwānākh.

that by it you may cross the harsh sea appointed for you, to reach your dwelling.

shmaʿ la-nvī kad bāʿē: l-w-īthā l-ʾūrḥā d-āzl bāh.

Listen to the prophet, as he asks for a companion for the road on which he goes,

d-ḥar da-d-yḥīlā (h)ī maʿbartā: rūḥā l-mārēh shāl (h)wā.

for he saw that the crossing was fearsome, and he was asking his Lord for the Spirit.

rūḥākh lam lā tesav mēnī: d-lā eṭbaʿ lī b-māmōlē.

"Do not take your Spirit from me," he said, "lest I sink in the floods."

d-aykh ṭalyā b-rūḥā d-avūhī: tlēyn bākh ḥayaī āmar (h)wā.

"Like a child upon his father's breath, my life hangs upon you," he was saying.

āp rūḥēh d-avā l-shavrā: b-nahrā mnaṭrā wa-mḥakmā.

The father's breath, too, guards the infant in the river and makes him strong,

w-aykh da-l-saḥāyā ṭarqā: mdalyā l-b-w-rā men māwtā.

and like a float for the swimmer, it lifts the untaught one up from death.

āp dāwīdh aykh yalūdā: da-b-yamā shdāyhī malāḥā.

David too, like a child whom a sailor has cast into the sea,

emar (h)wā l-māryā d-rūḥākh: qadīshā lā tesav mēnī.

said to the Lord, "Take not your Holy Spirit from me."

ṭalyā d-lā rūḥā d-avūhī: en nemṭe l-mayā ḥanqūhī.

A child without his father's breath, if he reaches the water, it drowns him,

wa-d-lā rūḥā d-alāhā: ḥānēq ʿālmā l-ʿālōlāwhī.

and without the Spirit of God, the world drowns its infants.

āp hānā nvī d-argesh: da-d-ḥīl ʿālmā l-meʿbar bēh.

This prophet too, who perceived that the world was fearsome to cross,

ḥūr kad pāqēdh lēh ʿedhrā: aykh aylā pṣīdhā d-may.

behold him begging for help, like a hart worn out for water,

ṣūth kad metṭarpā napshēh: w-aykh shavrā lewyā bāʿē.

listen as his soul is troubled, and like a child he asks for a companion,

ḥzī demʿāwhī kad meshtaʿe: da-ʿvīdān lēh mēkhūltā.

see his tears, as he tells how they have become his food,

shmaʿ kad qārē l-alāhā: d-nehwe lēh lewyā l-b-īvā.

hear him calling upon God to be a bold companion to him,

da-qshe ʿālmā l-merdā bēh: l-ga(n)bārā qrev w-ethnaqap.

for the world is hard to journey through; he drew near and joined himself to the Mighty One,

eʿbar lam b-setārākh: ʿashīnā b-athrā d-ḥīlā.

"Let me pass," he said, "under your shelter, O Mighty One, through the fearsome place,"

ethlāwe lākh w-aʿbaraynī: ʿdamā l-ba-ytēh d-alāhā.

"let me be joined to you, and bring me across, all the way to the house of God."

ḥar b-ʾūrḥā d-etdagashw bāh: tagārē āp ethḥalaṣw.

See the road on which merchants have stumbled and even been stripped bare,

ḥzā d-eshtalaḥw rāhōṭ: w-ethmaḥīw bāh ga(n)bārē.

he saw that runners were stripped on it, and mighty men were struck down upon it.

hālēyn ʿhadh w-etṭarpat: napshēh akhmā d-eshtaʿī.

These things he remembered, and his soul was troubled, just as he related.

wa-b-ʿā setārā d-neʿbar: ʿdamā l-ba-ytēh d-alāhā.

and he sought shelter, to pass through, all the way to the house of God.

eʿbar lam b-setārākh: b-athrā d-ḥīlā d-ʾītaī bēh.

"Let me pass," he said, "under your shelter, in the fearsome place where I am,"

« Laisse-moi passer », dit-il, « sous ton abri, dans le lieu redoutable où je suis, »

ʿdamā l-ba-ytākh hānāw dēyn: ʿdamā d-eḥze parṣōpākh.

"all the way to your house, that is, until I see your face."

b-setārākh eʿbar ṣdaykh: ba-l-w-ītākh emṭe l-wāthākh.

"Under your shelter let me pass to you; with your company let me arrive at you."

eshkḥēh māryā d-metṭarap: aykh shavrā d-āwbedh l-avūhī.

The Lord found him troubled, like a child who has lost his father,

gaykā lam bāʿēyt d-tēzal: ṭalyā d-lewyā shāl a(n)t.

"Where do you wish to go, child, that you ask for a companion?"

mar lēh l-wāth alāhā: da-mḥadē b-da-yrēh ṭalyūthī.

He said to God: "that my youth may rejoice in his dwelling."

ṣūtayhī kad gāʿāyā napshēh: l-wāth māryā ʿatīrāīth.

Listen to him, as his soul cries out to the Lord fervently,

aykh aynā da-mragh wa-npal: b-ghūbā srīqā da-b-ḥūrbā.

like one who has slipped and fallen into an empty pit in the wilderness,

w-āp aynā da-rme b-ghūbā: b-ḥūrbā d-neshle lā yādaʿ.

and one who lies in a pit in the wilderness does not know when he will be at rest,

klʿedān hāwē gāʿē: dam ʿābar nāsh nargash bēh.

at every moment he keeps crying out, that perhaps someone passing by might notice him.

kmā d-ʾīth bēh ʿārē masraḥ: da-khbar neshkaḥ ʾīlā.

As long as he has strength he keeps crying out, that perhaps he may find a helper,

w-sābar d-en qalīl neshle: ʿābar nāshā w-shābēq lēh.

and he thinks that if he is quiet a little while, someone will pass by and leave him,

w-ʿal savrā d-nāsh da-ndalēywhī: kāwshā l-napshēh lā yāhēv.

and in hope that someone might draw him up, he gives his soul no rest,

w-kul qālā d-qārē rānē: d-bēh men gūbā netdale.

and at every voice he hears, he thinks that by it he will be drawn up from the pit.

hākhwāth gāʿēyn pārōshē: men ʿālmā l-metdalāyū.

So too the discerning cry out, to be lifted up out of the world,

d-āp hāw aykh gūbā hāw ḥarbā: b-athrā d-ḥūrbā wa-d-ṣedhyā.

for it too is like a desolate pit, in a place of waste and ruin.

hākhwāth etṭarpat napshēh: da-nvī yāwmaī ḥayāwhī.

So too the prophet's soul was troubled, all the days of his life,

w-aykh aylā āp gāʿē (h)wā: l-wāth māryā aykh da-ndalēywhī.

and like a hart he too cried out to the Lord, that he might draw him up.

lāw men kadū hālēyn nōn: ʿūbē d-melathī ṭūvānā.

These are not, from just now, the recesses of my blessed discourse,

l-l-w-bāvākh hāw ḥāar nā: da-b-kul gāwnyn ēmadhekh.

it is your encouragement I look to, that I may show it to you in every hue,

wa-khbar dāynīn lī ktābē: d-māēsh nā l-hōn rhīvāīth.

and perhaps the Scriptures judge me, for tasting them so hastily,

w-en rāghrīn melḥā enōn: d-lā (h)wā kul (h)ī methakhlā.

and if they crave the salt, know that not all of it is to be eaten,

lā (h)wā l-ḥōdēyh methakhlā: melḥā memthōm l-savʿūtā.

salt was never meant to be eaten alone, to satiety,

qalīl methnasbā d-teḥlōṭ: d-nethma(d)khūn bāh pakīhē.

a little is taken to mix in, that bland things may be seasoned by it.

ḥūr b-ʿeqārā d-mā da-ṭmīr: hākhwāth sāwkāwhī da-rwīzān.

Consider the root: when it is hidden, so its branches are luxuriant,

w-en galītāyhī men ʿaprēh: amlekh yavshā ʿal sāwkāwhī.

but if you expose it from its earth, dryness reigns over its branches.

ṣaʿrēh d-ʿeqārā b-arʿā: gayūtā l-pērāwhī yāhēv.

The root's humiliation in the earth gives glory to its fruits,

hāw ḥālēdh nāḥēth b-arʿā: w-sāwkāwhī shāwḥān la-mrāwmā.

it burrows down into the earth, while its branches grow up toward the height.

n nethgale ʿeqārā: lā tūv shāōḥā māwʿīthā.

If the root is exposed, the sprout no longer grows,

kmā d-metṭashe w-methʿamaq: shabṭē l-rāwmā methpashṭīn.

the more it is hidden and driven deep, the more the shoots stretch toward the height.

hwī ʿeqārā l-marhāṭayk: d-neshwaḥ ʿamlākh la-mrāwmā.

Be a root to your own courses, that your labor may grow toward the height,

katar ba-ḥvūshyā d-ʾītayk: d-pērākh nehwe l-rēshīthā.

remain in the confinement in which you are, that your fruit may become firstfruits.

ʿeqārā bāʿar b-arʿā: d-sheqyā l-sāwkāwhī neshtadar.

The root burrows in the earth, that watering may be sent to its branches,

hā ghīn āp ba-rīkh b-arʿā: w-ḥāyrā l-rāwmā māwʿītēh.

behold, it too is bent and bowed down in the earth, while its sprout looks toward the height.

āp paghrā aykh ʿeqārā: mgahan ba-rīkh ba-ṣlōthā.

The body too, like the root, bends and bows down in prayer,

w-pērā d-reʿyānā rām: w-shāwaḥ rāwēz ba-shmayā.

while the fruit of the mind rises high, and grows, and rejoices in the heavens.

aykh ʿeqārā da-rme l-taḥt: w-ʿābēdh pērē l-ʿal hākan.

As the root lies below, and thus produces fruits above,

rme pārōshā ba-ṣlōthā: w-ʿābēdh pērē ba-shmayā.

the discerning man lies low in prayer, and produces fruits in heaven.

en ethgaī ʿeqārā: gayūtā d-pērē neplat.

If the root grows proud, the glory of the fruits falls,

w-en ethnapaṣ men ʿaprā: nafṣh ʿūbēh men pērē.

and if it shakes itself free from the earth, its bosom is shaken free of fruit.

hākanā en nāsh nahme: men b-w-rkā w-men bāʿūthā.

So too, if someone neglects kneeling and supplication,

yabesh wa-ḥmā dēṣlōthā: aykh shāqūtā (h)ī d-ʾīlānē.

the warmth of prayer dries up, as it is also the watering of trees,

ʿam shāwbā qrāvā māḥē: ʿeqārā d-ḥāladh b-arʿā.

The root that burrows in the earth wages war against the heat,

Like nets it casts out its tendrils, and wherever there is moisture, it draws it up.

methpseq wa-l-nūrā āzal: men hādē mzīʿ pārōshā.

"is cut down and goes to the fire" -- by this the discerning man is stirred.

it sucks from the earth like an infant, and suckles its fruits like a mother.

lāw ba-d-rūḥ ba-l-ḥōdh ʿavdan: mshīḥā ḥadh nāsh ba-sbartēh.

Not by the spirit alone did Christ, through his gospel, make us one person,

elā āp b-rūḥ āp ba-pgar: ḥadh nāsh ʿavdan yūlpānēh.

but both in spirit and in body his teaching has made us one person.

For when a hundred stomachs are satisfied by one dish,

lā hā galyā w-īdhīʿā: d-khlēh kenshan ḥadh hāw nāsh.

is it not plain and clear that our whole assembly is one person?

ḥadh b-w-shālā mettaqan: la-mā nāshyn aykh da-l-ḥadh.

One dish is prepared for a hundred persons, as though for one,

dāyāshā regath sagyē: wa-ḥdā d-gāwā mestaʿrā.

the appetite of many is fed by it, and one common dish is dealt with.

Let peace be daubed on us like plaster, that we may endure in the bond of love,

āwyūthā b-kenshan tēḥōdh: d-maghdlan nemṭe la-shmayā.

let concord hold sway in our assembly, that our tower may reach to heaven.

ḥadh leshānā nehwe lan: d-lā neṣdē lēh benyānan.

Let there be one tongue for us, that our building may not lie desolate,

d-kad ethpalaghw leshānē: b-ṭel benyānā wa-l-ʿālam.

for when tongues were divided, the building ceased forever.

lā nethpalagh ḥadh ʿal ḥadh: d-lā the da-yran aykh bābēl.

Let us not be divided one against another, lest our dwelling become like Babel,

d-elā neshmaʿ la-ḥdhādē: da-yran bābēl methqaryā.

for if we do not listen to one another, our dwelling is called Babel.

b-vāvēl gēyr lā shāmʿīn (h)wāw: gbar leshānā d-bar zāwgēh.

for in Babel, one man's tongue did not understand his fellow's,

ba-d-ghōn tmah hāw benyānā: wa-hwā l-ḥesdā l-dārdārīn.

therefore that building came to a halt, and became a reproach for generations.

ʿeṣyānā sagī dāmē: l-hāw pūlāghā d-leshānē.

Obstinacy greatly resembles that division of tongues,

hāw gēyr aḥrev benyānā: w-hānā mbaṭel wālīthā

for that one ruined a building; and does not this one too bring the work to nothing?

car celle-là ruina un édifice ; et celle-ci n'anéantit-elle pas aussi l'œuvre ?

en ḥadh pāqēdh āw mālakh: wa-ḥrēnā lā ʿānē lēh.

If one commands or counsels, and another does not answer him,

hwā b-w-l-bālā d-leshānē: w-ʿal takhtūshā w-ḥeryānā.

there arises a confusion of tongues, and it leads to strife and contention.

b-hādē lāṭ (h)wā l-vāblāyē: d-nāshā l-ḥavrēh lā neshmaʿ.

By this the Babylonians were cursed, that no one would listen to his fellow,

elā shmaʿnan la-ḥdhādē: qāwīt lāh ban marshūtā.

and unless we listen to one another, that same curse endures in us.

neshmaʿ melkā ḥadh men ḥadh: d-hākan nhalekh benyānan.

Let us listen to counsel, one from another, that thus our building may proceed,

hāw gēyr aynā d-lā shāmaʿ: men bāvlāyē (h)ī mashmaʿtēh.

for whoever does not listen -- his hearing is of the Babylonians.

bāblāyē shmaʿīw la-ḥdhādē: w-hā bānēyn maghdal ḥayē.

Let the Babylonians listen to one another, and behold, they build the tower of life,

nethḥapaṭ neʿne ḥdhādē: w-hā shwaḥ w-rāam benyānan.

let us be diligent to answer one another, and behold, our building grows and rises high.
