hākanā ʾūḥdān b-īshā: ba-shmayā mtal pārōqan.

Thus, concerning an evil dominion, our Savior spoke a parable of heaven,

d-men ʾīqārā d-ʾīth (h)wā lēh: npal ba-sbartēh da-ṣlīvā.

that from the honor which he once had, he fell, through the preaching of the Cross.

l-aḥā da-b-kul pūrshānīn: shlāmā w-shaynā men māran.

To the brother in every distinction, peace and calm from our Lord,

ḥūbā ḥmīrā nehwe lēh: l-kenshā d-da-yrākh naṣīḥā.

let love be leaven for him, for the gathering of your renowned monastery.

yādaʿ a(n)t d-emrēth qūdmayk: d-medem d-alīṣ hāw sharīr.

You know that I have said before you, that what is hard is true;

Tu sais que je t'ai dit auparavant, que ce qui est difficile est vrai ;

w-ḥāwīthākh (h)wēyth lā ba-zʿōr: taḥwītā d-medem d-emrēt.

and I have shown you not a little proof of the thing I said.

et je t'ai donné une preuve non mince de ce que j'ai dit.

w-en ba-ḥvūshyākh alīṣ a(n)t: sav lākh ḥāwrā men melathī.

And if in your confinement you are hard-pressed, take a companion from my word,

w-ethbaya w-aḥōdh amnākh: w-ʾīdā b-ʿamlākh lā tarpe.

and take courage, and hold your ground, and do not slacken your hand in your labor.

shatesthā dēyn lā melathī: tehwe elā da-khthāvā.

Let my word have no foundation but that of Scripture,

w-hāydēyn naptekh da-khyānā: l-l-w-bāvā d-pārōshūtākh.

and then nature will kindle in you the courage of your discernment.

ʿōl lam b-tarʿā alīṣā: hā shathsthā l-b-w-yāākh.

Enter, it is said, by the narrow gate: behold, a foundation for your comfort,

mekēyl nayte da-khyānā: ḥāwrā d-pāḥēm la-d-seprā.

henceforth let us bring, from nature, a likeness that matches Scripture.

b-tarʿā līṣā methgabrā: rūḥā b-mānā d-qaynāyā.

At a narrow opening the wind grows strong, in the smith's bellows,

w-methkatshā ʿam esqōṭlā: w-nāshmā mpashrā qashyūtēh.

and it struggles with the hearth, and by its breathing softens its hardness.

elūlā d-ḥavshāh b-zeqē: mshahaytā (h)wāth wa-d-lā ḥēyl.

Had it not confined it within skins, it would have been feeble and without strength;

S'il ne l'avait pas enfermé dans des outres, il aurait été faible et sans force ;

w-men d-ethḥavshat ethḥaylat: wa-l-ḥasīnā kevshat (h)wāth.

but once confined, it grew strong, and it subdued the mighty one.

parzlā d-madeq w-ārēsh kul: ḥvīshā āar ārēsh lēh.

Iron, that pierces and masters all things — air, confined, masters it,

w-sāṭānā da-mkabesh kul: ḥvīshā d-māran dāsh lēh.

and Satan, who subdues all, the one confined for our Lord tramples upon.

ba-khātēh ḥasnēh mshīḥā: l-sāṭānā aykh ʾūmānā.

By his sufferings Christ has mastered Satan, like a craftsman,

da-b-rūḥā ḥvīshā ārēsh: l-sāṭānā wa-l-esqōṭlā.

for with a confined breath he masters Satan and the hearth.

āp ʾūmānūtā yedhʿat: da-b-hālēyn napshāh tparnes.

Even the craft itself knows that by these things it sustains itself,

kyānā ba-khyānā rāshat: w-ba-mḥīlē zkht ḥasīnē.

nature has overcome nature, and by weak things it has conquered the mighty.

b-āghōnā maʿel rām: rūḥā w-parzlā ʾūmānā.

Into the contest the craftsman casts wind and iron,

w-ḥāēv ṣṣā men āar: w-pāshar sqōṭlā ba-npāḥā.

and the point yields before the air, and the hearth is melted by the blast.

parzlā d-marīdh men nāshā: rūḥā yādhʿā da-thshahēywhī.

Iron, that rebels against man, the wind knows how to weaken,

d-mā da-mḥātēh akhrahtēh: d-neshtaʿbadh l-ʾūmānūtā.

for when it strikes it, it enfeebles it, so it is made subject to the craft.

sṭāmā ḥāēsh men qūdhmēyh: d-mapōḥītā b-gāw kūrā.

The stubborn one suffers before it, from the blast within the furnace,

da-b-tarʿā līṣā teʿbar: kanshat ḥaylā wa-shrātēh.

for through a narrow opening it passes, having gathered its strength, and it made its home there.

hākhwāth āp napshā d-nāshā: d-methḥavshā meṭul īshōʿ.

So too the soul of a man, that is confined for the sake of Jesus,

methgabrā aykh da-thshahēywhī: l-ḥasīnā da-l-kul dāēsh.

grows strong, so that it may weaken the mighty one who tramples on all.

tūv ʿal tarʿā alīṣā: b-eskēmā ḥrēnā nēmar.

Again, on the narrow gate, let us speak in another manner.

da-khtāvā b-remzā emar: da-ḥnan nevʿe b-pūrshānā.

For Scripture spoke by a hint, that we should search it out with discernment,

en tepʿōr pūmākh tepōḥ: shrāghā l-ʿālam lā tadhʿekh

if you open your mouth wide to blow, you will never put out the lamp,

si tu ouvres ta bouche pour souffler largement, jamais tu n'éteindras la lampe,

w-mā d-alaṣtāh b-sepwāthākh: l-mapōḥītākh adhʿekhtāyhī.

but when you narrow it with your lips, with your breath you will put it out.

klmā d-ba-rūḥthā ʿābar: hākhwāth ʾīthāwhī aykh la-ytāwhī.

Whatever passes through openness is as though it were not,

aykanā d-mapōḥīthā: layt bāh ḥashḥū ba-rwaḥtā.

just as a breath, when spread wide, has no use.

b-rūḥā līṣtā meshkaḥ a(n)t: shrāgākh tadhʿekh āp tadhleq.

With a narrowed breath you can put out your lamp, and also light it,

w-tarʿīthā ḥshīshtā maṣyā: napshā tnaḥem wa-thʿalem.

and a restrained mind can revive the soul, and can also darken it.

pūmā pʿīrā lā meshkaḥ: d-men d-ʿākhā nqīm nahīrā.

A mouth gaping wide cannot raise up light from what is quenched,

mā da-rbaṣ. mapōḥītāh: mʿīrā nūhrā men d-ʿākhā.

but when its breath is compressed, it rouses light out of what is quenched.

krīhīn nōn tarʿē rwīḥē: wa-khrīhīn ʿālōlayhōn.

Weak are the wide gates, and weak are their approaches,

ʾūrḥā līṣtā d-ga(n)bārē (h)ī: w-ʾūrḥā d-pathyā d-ḥalāshē (h)ī.

the narrow way belongs to the mighty, and the wide way belongs to the weak.

mmaḥyā b-ḥevṣā lā ʿāal: d-metdaʿar lēh b-shūmātēh.

He who strikes in haste does not enter, for he is turned back at its narrow points,

la-shvīlē ptay ḥāar: da-b-hōn neʿbar men shūḥnāwhī.

he looks toward the wide paths, so that by them he may pass from his hardships.

ʾūrḥā līṣtā da-ḥlymē (h)ī: ʿālīn b-ḥevṣā w-lā marēyn.

The narrow way belongs to the sound; they enter with vigor, and do not complain,

ʿatīrē rmēyn ba-pthīthā: wa-b-qaṭīntā pārōshē.

the rich are thrown into the wide way, and the discerning into the narrow.

shvīlā pathyā ʿābēdh lēh: ṭakhsā b-karkh l-da-yānā.

A wide path is made for a judge — a procession through the city,

aykh da-l-marʿā w-nasīsā: d-qarīv nemṭe l-avdānā.

as it is for the sick and the dying, who is near to reaching perdition.

mā lam pthīḥā wa-rwīḥā: ʾūrḥā d-māwblā l-avdānā.

How open and wide, it is said, is the way that leads to perdition,

w-qaṭīnā āp alīṣā: ʾūrḥā d-thārṣā l-wāth ḥayē.

and narrow and strait is the way that leads toward life.

ʿal da-l-ghāw men īdaʿthā (h)ī: qaṭīnā ʾūrḥā d-ḥayē.

Because it lies within understanding, the way of life is narrow,

wa-d-lā sālēq ʿal lebā: ʿūthrāh amrāh d-qaṭīnā.

and because it does not rise to the heart, he called the narrow way's wealth thus:

emar gēyr d-nīrī ba-sīm hāw: w-māwbalī sagī qalīlā.

for he said, "My yoke is pleasant, and my burden is very light."

qaṭīnā dēyn men madʿā: b-yadh da-mghwaī mūlkānāh.

But it is called thin, from understanding, because its promise lies hidden within.

nasīsīn nōn ʿatīrē: da-b-ḥayē ptayā rādēyn.

Dying are the rich, who walk in the wide life,

akhmā d-nasīsā rūḥā: da-b-pūmā pʿīrā nepqat.

like the dying breath that goes out through a mouth gaping wide.

ganābārīn dēyn pārōshē: da-b-ḥayē lyṣē halekhw.

But mighty are the discerning, who walked in the narrow life,

aykanā d-mapōḥīthā: mā d-alīṣā methgabrā.

just as breath, when narrowed, grows strong.

l-khōdanāyā d-mā ʿatīrā: da-l-wātēh nāsh lā qārēv.

To the mule, however richly decked, no one draws near,

māwgēyn nāshā men qūdhmāwhī: aykh men qūdhmath bāʿōṭā.

people shy away from it, as from a kicker.

aykh da-l-thāwrā dāqōrā: ʿāvdīn lēh shūqā b-karkhā.

As for a goring ox, they clear a street for it in the city,

w-aykh da-b-ḥaywāthā kāēyn: ʿavdayhōn ba-b-naynāshā.

and just as they check unruly beasts, their handlers do the same among men.

Every path that is loose is wearying, and whoever travels it stumbles,

shvīlā ḥīṣā w-sharīrā: d-l-īl la-hlakhthā d-tagārē.

a firm and solid path is easy for travelers to walk.

lāw sagī mhalekh nāshā: ʿal tevnā kad methpashaḥ.

A man does not go far, when he stumbles on straw,

ʿal arʿā ḥālānāytā: sagī lāēyn halākē.

On sandy ground, walkers grow very weary,

qshe hāw rkhōvā w-male ḥaylā: ʾūrḥā d-ḥīṣā da-nyāḥā (h)ī.

hard is the steep climb, and full of toil, but the way of firm ground brings rest.

mpashḥīn enōn rēshānē: da-b-ʾūrḥā rpīthā rādēyn.

Their footsteps are broken, those who travel the loose path,

msharēyn enōn paghrayhōn: d-ʿal rāwdādē methrabēyn.

their bodies grow soft, those who are raised in comfort.

l-vātarhōn mettalyā b-hōn: ʾūrḥā d-pathyā b-tagārē.

Behind them the wide road still clings to them, among travelers,

sagī methbazzā hlakhthā: b-mīlā wa-thrēyn meshtahyā.

their walking is much plundered; within a mile or two, it grows weary.

hālēyn nesyānā alpanī: w-ṣārēth la-qnōmī taḥwīthā.

d-ʾūrḥā d-ʿālmā d-tashnīqā (h)ī: w-(h)ī d-alāhā da-nyāḥā (h)ī.

For the way of the world is one of torment, but that of God is one of rest.

mūāvāyē nvī ktav: da-shlēyn lam men ṭalyūthhōn.

Of the Moabites the prophet wrote, that they were at ease, it is said, from their youth,

w-shakūthīn ʿal teṭrayhōn: d-ʿam rā(ʿ)wāthā neshtabaḥ.

and settled upon their dregs, that among their companions they might be praised.

ḥzī b-mānā shabaḥ enōn: eramyā la-b-naī mūāv.

See in what Jeremiah praised the children of Moab.

hākhwāth agar ba-ḥvūshyākh: da-nshabḥākh men da-l-henōn.

Likewise, strive in your confinement, that he may praise you more than them.

lā lam sareqīw mānayhōn: wa-b-shevyā lā lam ezalīw.

"Their vessels were not emptied," it is said, "nor did they go into captivity."

ʿal hādē ṭaʿmhōn qayām: w-rēyḥhōn menhōn lā lam pāgh.

"Therefore their taste remains, and their scent has not faded from them," it is said.

hārkā ḥāwī ēramyā: da-b-khāwshā ṭaʿmā ʿātar.

Here Jeremiah shows that flavor grows rich through stillness,

w-en neshtadē l-khā wa-l-hal: pāgh lēh ṭaʿman āp rēyḥan.

but if it is tossed here and there, its taste and its scent fade.

mūshākh rēyḥā ba-sīmā: āp ʿeṭrēh aykh mabūʿā hāw.

Sweet-scented musk — its fragrance too is like a spring,

mā da-npaq wa-ṭrāyhī rūḥā: pāgh lēh rēyḥēh ba-sīmā.

but when it goes forth and the wind scatters it, its sweet fragrance fades.

ba-ḥvūshyēh ʿātar nevʿēh: w-galītāyhī gāz lēh ʿeṭrēh.

Confined, its source grows rich; exposed, its fragrance is stolen,

la-ḥvīshā d-māran dāmē: da-khmā d-khsh methyatar.

it resembles our Lord's prisoner: the more he suffers, the more he profits.

l-hānā ʿeṭrā d-ḥalyūtā: d-sagī rāḥēm nūṭārā.

This fragrance of sweetness the guardian loves greatly,

lēh dāmē yathbā shalyā: da-myatrā lēh nakhpūtā.

he resembles a quiet stillness, made excellent by chastity.

pagh lēh rēyḥā men mūshākh: en meshtadē l-khā wa-l-khā.

The scent fades from musk, if it is tossed here and there,

ḥāṭpā lēh rūḥā rēyḥēh: w-shālaḥ zīūh aykh ādām.

the wind snatches away its fragrance, and it sheds its splendor, as Adam did.

mā dēyn da-mḥapaī b-apāwhī: ṣārēyn gallāwhī medhyārē.

But when it is wrapped on its surface, its ripples form dwellings,

wa-b-shwqē da-mdhīnāthā: pāwḥēh ḥalyā methnaṣaḥ.

and in the streets of the cities its sweet fragrance triumphs.

w-lā rḥem pehyā hān mūshākh: w-en aphītāyhī āwbedtāyhī.

This musk does not love neglect; and if you neglect it, you destroy it.

nerḥam shelyā w-lā nephe: d-lā tpūgh lāh ḥalyūtan.

Let us love stillness, and not be careless, lest our sweetness fade.

w-āp ṭaʿmā da-ḥvīshūtā: aṭʿem māran la-shlīḥāwhī.

And the taste of confinement, too, our Lord gave his apostles to taste,

b-(h)ī d-emar (h)wā d-lā hwaytōn: mshanēyn men ba-ytā l-ḥavrēh.

in that he said, "Do not move from house to house,"

while the whole land was sick, and there were only twelve physicians,

kad sagī ḥṣādā wa-mle: w-pāʿlē zʿōrīn aykh d-emar.

while the harvest was great and full, and the workers few, as he said,

kad kul menthā d-saʿrayhōn: da-shlīḥē nāshā the (h)wāth.

while every portion of the apostles' labor was needed by mankind,

zʿōrīn (h)wāw w-lā mamdīn (h)wāw: l-mesʿar kēbē d-nāshūtā.

they were few and could not suffice to tend the sicknesses of mankind,

kad hāw zavnā tābaʿ (h)wā: da-b-kul bātyn nethkarkūn.

while that time required them to go about in every house,

pūqdānā npaq (h)wā ʿlayhōn: d-men baī l-baī lā nshanōn.

a command went forth upon them: that they should not move from house to house.

kmā hākēyl lākh methbaʿyā: da-b-shelyā b-da-yrākh tehwe.

How much more, therefore, is it required of you, that you remain in quiet in your cell,

w-lā tepōq tephe w-teshge: men da-yrā l-da-yrā magān.

and not go out, and grow careless, and stray, from cell to cell for nothing.

en b-hāw zavnā d-ṣūrkānā: la-shlīḥē hādh ethamrat.

If, in that time of need, this was said to the apostles,

yāwmānā sagī payā: d-ʿūmrā shalyā nehwe lan.

how much more fitting is it today, that a quiet dwelling be ours.

talmedw lam klhōn ʿammē: wa-l-kul bātīn lā tshanōn.

"Make disciples of all nations," it is said, "but do not move from house to house,"

ḥōth lam aseq lī nwnē: men yamā w-lā tethraṭav.

"go down," it is said, "and bring up fish for me from the sea, but do not get wet."

« descends », est-il dit, « et remonte-moi des poissons de la mer, mais ne te mouille pas ».

d-lā nezdallūn talmīdē: w-nazlūn la-shmā da-mshīḥā.

So that the disciples not be made contemptible, as they went about in the name of Christ,

paqedh d-aykā d-ʿālītōn: lā tshanōn men baī l-baī.

he commanded, "Wherever you enter, do not move from house to house,"

hākhwāth lam methyadhʿīn ʾ(n)tōn: l-ʿālmā b-medem d-ʾītaykōn.

"thus," he said, "you are known to the world by what you are,

en gēyr b-kul baī pāhēytōn: lā nāsh yādaʿ men a(n)tōn.

for if you wander into every house, no one will know who you are,

shūālē ʿlaykōn hāwēyn: d-aykan enōn ḥaīykōn.

questions will arise concerning you: what sort of life is yours."

w-en lā kāshtōn b-ḥadh ʿūmrā: ḥalyūthkhōn lā metṭaʿmā.

And if you do not settle in one dwelling, your sweetness will not be tasted,

men hāw ba-ytā d-a(n)tōn bēh: ātēyn yālpīn sagyē.

from that house in which you dwell, many will come and learn

men enōn d-w-bāraykōn: w-thāybīn ba-ʿgal ṣdaykōn.

what your conduct is like, and they will quickly return again to you.

ḥūr bēh b-hāwnā da-shre bākh: bākh methnahar yōm

Consider the mind that dwells in you: through you it grows bright, day

men yōm.

by day.

après jour.

w-ḥadh ʿedān en npaq menākh: ḥsar ḥekmātēh w-yadaʿātēh.

And if for one moment it departs from you, it loses its wisdom and its knowledge.

l-reʿyānākh paghrākh da-yrā hāw: kmā d-ʿāmar bākh aykh shemshā hāw.

Your body is a cell for your mind, as long as it dwells in you like the sun,

w-en shanī ḥdā shāʿ menākh: evdat klāh payūtākh.

and if it departs from you for one hour, all your beauty is lost.

ap napshā da-ḥvīshā bākh: kmā d-sharyā bākh methḥakmā.

So too the soul that is confined within you, so long as it dwells in you, grows wise,

rāwḥā b-paghrākh wa-mnāḥā: aykh ba-mdhī(n)tā d-malkūtā.

it is spacious and at rest in your body, as in a royal city.

d-emathī da-qṭīrā d-māwtā: ʿāṣā d-napqīh men ʿūmrāh.

For whenever the compulsion of death forces it to be driven out from its dwelling,

methalṣā āp mettʿīqā: d-men gāw da-yrākh methgalzā.

it is distressed, and also grieved, that it is deprived of the inside of your cell,

methbaṭlā men yūthrānā: w-meshtalḥā men pūrshānā.

it ceases from profit, and is stripped of discernment,

da-l-bar men paghrā lā ʾīth: taghūrtā l-napshā memthōm.

for outside the body there is no trade for the soul, ever.

kad ʾīth lāh bākh ʾūlṣānē: l-napshā rāḥmā ʿenyānākh.

Though it has afflictions in you, the soul loves your company,

kad maḥshīn lāh nesyōnaykh: wa-mʿīqīn lāh ḥūsrānayk.

though your trials darken it, and your losses grieve it,

kad klyōm alīṣā bākh: lā raʿyā d-tarḥeq menākh.

though every day it is confined in you, it has no wish to depart from you.

tehwe lākh da-yrākh paghrākh: wa-rḥamēyh a(n)t aykh napshākh.

Let your body be your cell, and love it as you love your own soul,

aykh da-l-ḥakymē ṣābēyn: d-remzā d-melaī ēmar lākh.

as the wise wish, for the hint of my words has told you.

meṭul hāw rāhōṭāīth: ʿal kul taḥwī ʿābar nā.

Therefore, swiftly, I pass over every proof.

zarʿā da-ghle lā māwʿe: w-en mapraʿ yaḥṭā hāw pērēh.

Seed that lies exposed does not sprout, and if it does yield, its fruit falls short,

w-aynā da-ḥvīsh wa-mḥapaī: mayte sheblā la-ḥṣādā.

but that which is buried and covered brings forth an ear of grain for harvest.

zarʿā ṭmīrā hāw gādal: shnānā w-māwsheṭ l-akārā.

It is the buried seed that weaves the blade, and offers it to the farmer,

w-aḥā ḥvīshā hāw yāhv: pērā d-shūvḥā la-mshīḥā.

so the confined brother gives fruit of glory to Christ.

nūnā ḥvīshā da-b-yamā: estyrā b-pūmh āwsheṭ.

The fish confined in the sea offered the coin from its mouth,

d-ʾīthwhī rāzā da-ḥvīshā: d-maseq shūvḥā ba-ḥvūshyēh.

which is the mystery of the confined one, who offers up glory in his confinement.

kad meshkaḥ (h)wā d-pāraḥthā: tetal (h)wāth lēh estēyrā.

Though it were possible for a bird to give him the coin,

men nūnā ṭmīrā qabel: aykh da-nqales la-ḥvīshē.
