nūhrākh mārī nlāwe l-īdaʿthī: d-eʿōl l-sharbēh d-ḥeshōkhā.

May your light, my Lord, accompany my knowledge, that I may enter the affair of darkness.

w-ḥa(y)wtā pqarthā d-ʾīth bēh: asūrēyh l-kul ēḥāwe.

And the shameless beast that is in him — its bonds I will show to all.

esartāyhī gēyr wa-b-la-mtāyhī: l-sāṭānā meṭul ʿānākh.

For I have bound him and muzzled him — Satan, for the sake of your flock.

w-kad hāw nāhm b-asūrāwhī: rhīvīn emrē d-marʿītāk

And while he growls in his bonds, the lambs of your flock are afraid.

sharbēh d-sāṭānā lelyā hāw: alāhā anhar madaʿī.

The affair of Satan is night; O God, illumine my mind.

d-nēlpūn shavrē d-lā meshkaḥ: d-neghmōr rūgzēh b-bēyth ādām.

That the simple may learn that he cannot fulfill his wrath upon the house of Adam.

shrāgā meltākh tehwe lī: d-eqre seprā d-ḥūshāvāwhī.

May your word be a lamp to me, that I may read the book of his thoughts.

d-ba-ʾylēyn eskēmē shāgēsh: la-b-rītā d-lā ba-qṭīrā.

By what guises he troubles creation, which is free, not held by force.

ṣadwē ʾīth lēh l-sāṭānā: da-b-hōn tāwhā shavrūtā.

Satan has snares, by which simplicity is led astray.

w-kad lā meshkaḥ sāraḥ bāh: b-īdh ṣnʿātēh dālaḥ lāh.

And when he cannot prevail against it, by his crafts he disturbs it.

maghsar nehmāthā d-aryā: kad ḥaylā d-pakhrēh taqīp.

The roars of a lion grow feeble, when the strength of his chain is strong.

pārdā ʿānā men qālēh: kad da-nḥabel lā madhrekh.

The flock scatters at his voice, though he cannot reach it to destroy.

l-aryā pkhīrā wa-b-l-īmā: dāmē b-ṭūpsā sāṭānā.

Satan resembles, in likeness, a lion bound and restrained.

tāwhāthā d-rāmē qashyān: nesrōḥ dēyn lā methhayman.

Harsh are the terrors that he casts, but that he should prevail is not granted him.

b-l-īm hāw l-ḥaylā ʿelāyā: w-marpaī b-arʿā l-d-w-ḥālā.

He is restrained by the power on high, and let loose on earth for terror.

ṣvyānēh b-rūghzā mshamlaī: w-layt lēh ʿūqsā da-qṭīrā.

His will he fulfills through wrath, yet he has no power to compel.

lā mārī nethʿash bēh leshānī: b-hānā sharbā d-sāṭānā.

Let not my tongue, O Lord, grow harsh in this affair of Satan,

d-lā nēmrūn d-hewyū dāwdēh: meṭul da-ghzam da-nparsēywhī.

lest they say I have become his adversary, because I threatened to expose him.

d-ʾḥāwe l-nāshā sharyath: d-shavṭā hāw d-neghdā sāṭānā.

I have begun to show mankind that Satan is a rod that scourges,

w-en māryā lā marshel lēh: d-nesrōḥ memthōm lā mṭē.

and unless the Lord lets him loose, he never once succeeds to harm.

lāw d-ezakēywhī āmar nā: āplā d-shalīṭ malep nā.

Not that I acquit him do I say this, nor do I teach that he has power [of his own];

Ce n'est pas pour l'acquitter que je dis cela, et je n'enseigne pas non plus qu'il a un pouvoir [propre] ;

l-ṣevyānēh dēyn dān nā: d-ṣābē da-l-kul nesrōḥ (h)wā.

but his will I do judge — that he desires to harm all.

aryā hāw d-esrat kēnūthā: w-ʿal tarʿāh b-d-ḥlā rabīʿ.

He is a lion that Justice has bound, and crouches at her door in fear,

d-aynā d-hāpakh men nīrāh: meshtalaṭ bēh w-sāraḥ lēh.

so that whoever turns from her yoke, over him he is given power and does him harm.

rme hāw bēh kavlā d-kēnūtā: b-yadh ṣvyānēh sārōḥā hāw.

On him Justice has cast a chain, though by his own will he is one who does harm,

w-ʾīth hāw emathī d-marpyā lēh: d-terdē bēh l-men da-ḥṭā lāh.

and there is a time when she looses him, that through him she may chastise whoever has sinned against her.

kvīsh hāw taḥtaī kēnūtā: wa-b-l-īm hāw lāh d-lā nesrōḥ.

He is subdued beneath Justice, and restrained by her so that he may not harm;

Il est soumis sous la Justice, et retenu par elle afin qu'il ne nuise pas ;

ṣvyānēh lā methkabash: d-āp kad asīr marīdh hāw.

his will is not subdued, for even when bound, he is rebellious.

aykh ḥṭāhā b-tarʿā rabīʿ: d-aynā d-nāpaq men qūshtā.

Like sin he crouches at the door, for whoever departs from the truth,

mshamrā lēh ʿlāwhī kēnūtā: wa-khmā d-ṣābyā rādhyā lēh.

Justice hands him over to him, and chastises him as much as she wills.

lāw akhmā d-ṣābē shēdā: magar shekhnēh ʿal nāshā.

Not as the demon wishes does he prolong his hold over man;

Ce n'est pas comme le démon le veut qu'il prolonge son emprise sur l'homme ;

hāw men da-l-b-īkh lēh l-shavṭā: hāw mnagedh bēh kmā d-ṣābē.

rather, whoever holds the rod, it is he who wields it, as much as he wishes.

ʾīth emathī d-ṭārē l-ʿwlē: ʿal da-ḥṭāw avāhayhōn.

There is a time when he afflicts children, because their fathers have sinned,

d-lā neḥgōr la-thyāvūthā: rdā l-ʿwelā w-tavw avāhāwhī.

lest he be slow to repent, he chastised the child, and his fathers turned back.

elū shrā l-da-ywē d-nakōn: arʿā men mthōm lā yethbat.

If he had loosed the demons to strike you, the earth would never once have been settled;

S'il avait lâché les démons pour te frapper, la terre n'aurait jamais été établie ;

d-ba-ḥdā shāʿthā nāplīn (h)wāw: w-ḥārbīn (h)wāw lāh l-nāshūtā.

for in a single hour they would have fallen upon and laid waste mankind.

ʿagūdh hāw ʿūqsā d-shēdē: aykh debōrē b-yōm kānōn.

Bound is the sting of demons, like bees in the day of winter,

w-lā mṣyn dābaṣīn āw ṭārēyn: d-lā ʾīth ḥaylā b-ʿūqsayhōn.

and they cannot sting or attack, for there is no strength in their stings.

shavrā d-lā yādaʿ dāḥēl: men debōrā b-yōm kānōn.

The child who does not know still fears a bee in the day of winter;

L'enfant qui ne sait pas craint pourtant une abeille au jour de l'hiver ;

lā d-ḥīl shēdā aykh shemʿēh: da-mshahaī hāw nekhyānēh.

the demon is not to be feared as his report suggests, for his harm is checked.

d-ḥīl āp shemʿēh d-debōrā: wa-d-lā ʿūqsā da-shʿāthā hāw.

Feared too is the very report of the bee, even though at this hour it has no sting.

debōrā l-shēdā parsī: w-ṭebēh mdaḥel l-yalūdā.

I have compared the bee to the demon, whose report frightens a child.

mezam zāēm debōrā: b-khānōn medhbaṣ lā dābēṣ.

Loudly the bee buzzes its threat, yet in winter it does not sting at all.

āp shēdā b-qālā hāw mathwah: lā dēyn sāraḥ wa-mḥabel.

The demon too astonishes by voice alone, but he does not harm or destroy.

w-en maylel da-plān aghranī: lā zādēq lākh d-tasharāyhī.

Et s'il dit : « Un tel m'a engagé », tu ne dois pas le croire.

ḥarbā hāw gēyr bāʿē d-narme: w-nasbekh nāshā ba-ḥdādē.

For it is ruin he seeks to cast, and to entangle men with one another,

da-l-ḥadh ṭārē b-hadāmāwhī: w-la-ḥrānē b-reʿyānayhōn.

one he afflicts in his limbs, and others in their thoughts.

da-b-kesyā w-gelyā nevʿōṭ: w-meshtane d-mēgar aghrūnī.

Secretly and openly he strikes, and pretends that someone has hired him.

kmā d-meshkaḥ āshēdh tūkāwhī: w-ḥarbā d-nasep lā bāṭal.

As much as he can, he pours out his slanders, and the destroying sword does not cease,

d-nedhlōḥ reʿyānē pshyṭē: mshamah napshēh aghīrā.

to trouble simple minds, he calls himself a hired one.

w-en gēyr shalīṭ hāw d-ba-ʾghrā: nesrōḥ nāshā aykh d-āmar.

For if he indeed had power, when hired, to harm a man, as he claims,

āp d-lā aghrā sāraḥ hāw: w-lāw sagī sraḥ aykh da-mṣe.

even without hire he does harm, though he has not harmed as much as he is able.

Of the myriads that are in the cities, only ten would he have harmed;

Des myriades qui sont dans les cités, dix seulement il en aurait blessées ;

mraḥmān hāw men gayāsē: d-ḥārbīn karkē malyāīth.

he is more merciful than robbers, who lay waste whole cities.

endēyn kad shalīṭ d-nesrōḥ: l-sagyē sraḥ da-l-ylē.

But if, when he has power to harm, he harms only a few of the many,

mādēyēn ṭāvā hāw da-mraḥem: w-ʿal men mettlīṭ aykh b-īshā.

then he is good, in that he shows mercy — so on what ground is he cursed as evil?

And how is it that the Troubler was made to wait to be burned and tormented?

To every side he spreads his wings, to trouble the sons of men.

He scatters his snares like seed, to hunt the simple into obedience,

Mockery is hidden in honor, in the voice with which he cries to the simple,

ʾō gēyr menākh meshtamʿā: w-ʿal sharīrā w-zpānā.

for 'Oh, because of you' is heard, said both to the true man and the false.

b-qālā rāmā mbazaḥ bēh: w-maḥtar sakhlā d-shāmaʿ lēh.

With a loud voice he mocks him, and the fool who hears him grows proud.

men sāhdē qāʿē b-qūshtā: wa-b-ṣadhwā men zēpānē.

From true witnesses he cries out in truth, and by deceit from liars,

men ḥadh maylel men deḥlā: w-men ḥrēnā aykh da-b-bezḥā.

from one he speaks out of fear, and from another as if in mockery.

l-sagyēē b-hādē shābē: d-āzl maylel qūdhmayhōn.

By this he takes many captive, going and speaking before them,

w-kad lāw rāzāwhī yalīpīn: tvārā shalmā mettavrīn.

and though they have not learned his mysteries, they are utterly broken.

d-lā nūqāyā d-ḥamrānē: ʿal rāmūthhōn hāw mettnīḥ.

Without regard for the discernment of drunkards, upon their pride he rests,

wa-d-lā ḥeshlthā d-rāzayhōn: ba-ḥthīrūthhōn methbasam.

and without the tempering of their reason, he delights in their pride.

mnāḥā (h)ī lēh l-da-ywā sagī: rāmūtā men nūqāyā.

Very restful is it for the demon: pride, more than sobriety,

wa-l-rēyḥā da-ḥthīrūthā: methqarav aykh da-l-devḥā.

and to the scent of pride he draws near as to a sacrifice.

rāḥēm ṭanpā mā da-shmaʿ: l-shēdā d-qāʿē ʾō menākh.

The unclean man loves it when he hears the demon crying, 'Oh, because of you!'

ṭʿā lēh dāwyā men ʾītāwhī: wa-b-ḥūthrā shvāyhī mūkākēh.

The wretched man forgets his true self, and his own humility a mere staff leads captive.

pāsaʿ nāsh nēme b-ʿēdtā: w-bēyth shlīḥē methmatan.

Let a man step forward and swear in the Church, and in the house of apostles let it be weighed.

lā yādhʿītōn da-thparshūn: mnāwāthā ītīrāthā.

Do you not know how to distinguish the higher portions?

Ne savez-vous pas distinguer les portions supérieures ?

d-methḥazyān hāw l-b-īkīnan: b-ḥasīrūtā d-īdaʿthā.

which appear equal to us, held fast as we are in a deficiency of knowledge?

lā ḥzaytōn ṭakhsā d-malkā: da-qdāmāwhī nāsh lā bālaʿ.

Have you not seen the order of a king, before whom no one dares speak out of turn?

w-rabaī ḥaylē da-qdāmāwhī: henōn rādēyn l-mārōdē.

and the commanders of forces before him, they punish the rebels.

mshīḥā b-ʿēdtēh aykh malkā: wa-shlīḥā aykh rabḥaylā.

Christ in his Church is like the king, and the apostle like the commander;

Le Christ dans son Église est comme le roi, et l'apôtre comme le chef d'armée ;

bēyth malkā shelyā pāqēdh: wa-shghūshyā bēyth rabḥaylā hāw.

in the house of the king, silence is commanded, but tumult belongs to the house of the commander.

āp malkā mshīḥā hākan: l-ʿēdātēh b-shelyā yaqar.

So too Christ the King has honored his churches with silence,

w-ashlem shēdē mārōdē: da-qdhām ʿavdāwhī nettdīnūn.

and has handed over rebellious demons to be judged before his servants.

lā mbagen shēdā b-ʿēdtā: d-sādar lēh pūmēh srāpā.

Let not a demon rage in the church, whose mouth the seraph has set in order,

d-lā nṣaʿar b-īrath malkā: d-mezdayḥā bāh rabūtā.

so that he may not insult the palace of the King, in which majesty is glorified.

elū b-ʿēdtā maylel (h)wā: w-bēyth sāhdē da-ywā shawyath.

If he had only spoken in the Church, and the demon had been made equal in the house of martyrs,

men yādaʿ (h)wā da-nparesh: bar malkā men rabḥaylā.

who would have known how to distinguish the king's son from the commander?

l-sagyēē dēyn (h)ī hādē: l-ḥūsrānā hwāth wa-l-thūkā.

But to many this became a loss and a reproach,

w-hānā ʾīqārā myatrā: b-eskamā ḥrnā shāṭūhī.

and this excellent honor, in another guise, they despised.

shīṭūthā (h)ī lēh l-bar malkan: da-nbagnūn da-ywē qdāmāwhī.

It is a disgrace to the Son of our King, that demons should rage before him,

d-aykh da-b-da-rghā d-shūlṭānā: yahbāh hādē l-talmīdhāwhī.

for as by a degree of authority he has given this to his disciples.

When a demon dared and spoke before our Lord in the land of Judea,

ba-khāthā sakrēh pūmēh: da-qdhām malkā lā neshgōsh.

with a rebuke he shut his mouth, that before the King he should not cause tumult.

āp gayāsā mā d-nāpaq: men qdām apaī da-yānā.

Even a robber, when he goes out from before the face of the judge,

l-ba-rnāshā ʾīth lēh tartēyn: āp d-neṣbe wa-d-neʿbedh.

Man has two things: to will, and to do.

l-sāṭānā ḥdā (y)hīvā lēh: d-neṣbe shapīr āw da-sne.

To Satan only one is given: to will, whether good or ill.

ʾīth lēh d-neṣvā w-lā neṣva: w-tartayhēyn ḥdā methamrā.

He can will, or not will — yet the two are counted as one,

d-āp (h)ī aydā d-ṣābē bāh: hwyū ṣvā d-lā neṣbe bāh.

for that very thing which he wills, is the same as if he willed not to will it.

l-ḥērūtā d-īlan ʾīth lāh: āp d-teṣbe wa-d-lā teṣbe.

Our freedom, too, has this: to will, and not to will,

wa-d-tesrōḥ wa-d-lā tesrōḥ: w-arbaʿ d-tartēyn methamrān.

and to transgress, and not to transgress — so four things are spoken of as two.

āp tartayhēyn ḥdā enēyn: (h)ī da-ṣvā ʿam (h)ī da-sʿar.

Even these two are one — the thing willed, together with the thing done —

wa-ḥdā d-b-īshā tartēyn (h)ī: b-(h)ī gēyr da-ṣvā sārōḥā hāw.

but the Evil One's one thing is counted as two, for in the mere willing he is already a transgressor.

ʾīth lēh d-neṣbe akhwātan: layt lēh d-nesrōḥ akhwātan.

He can will, as we do; he cannot transgress, as we do.

ḥayāv d-īnā d-rashīʿē: ba-d-ṣābē b-avdānayhōn.

He is liable to the judgment of the wicked, since he wills their ruin,

methqaṭragh ba-d-mā d-ṭamē: ʿal d-ḥādē b-sūrḥānayhōn.

he is charged with the blood of the defiled, because he delights in their sins,

mettbaʿ ṣaʿrā d-shānayā: ʿal da-mnāḥ b-shūqāpayhōn.

he is held to account for the shame of the mad, because he takes his ease in their downfall.

āp ḥērūtan ba-d-ṣalmā (h)ī: lāw klmedem shalīṭā.

Our freedom too exists after the image; it is not lord over everything —

men d-sāṭānā ʿelāyā (h)ī: w-men yāhōvāh taḥtāyā.

higher than Satan's, and lower than its Giver's.

ṣāb ba-rnāshā d-nepraḥ: w-lā mthōm ettrīm ba-prāḥā.

Man wills to fly, yet he has never once been lifted up in flying.

ba-d-neṣbe w-ba-d-lā neṣbe: b-hādh dāmēynan l-alāhā.

In willing, and in not willing — in this we resemble God.

w-āplā da-nmūth ṣābēynan: w-shūlṭānan l-khā lā mṭ.

And though we do not will to die, our power does not reach that far.

āp hālēyn gēyr shealāthā: ʿaghrāīth hāw meshtaalān.

For these very questions, too, are asked only with difficulty.

elū sʿar kul ṣevyānan: lāw ṣalmā (h)wā wa-d-mūthā.

alāhā (h)wā mshalmānā: da-b-ṣevyānēh sāʿar kul.

God was all-perfect, who by his will accomplishes all things.

nṣūr lam nāshā b-ṣalman: lā b-ʿabdē tevʿe ṣalmēh.

'Let us fashion man in our image' — do not look for his image in deeds,

āplā b-ḥaylē rūḥānē: d-ṣalmā d-malkā ba-rnāshā hāw.

nor in spiritual powers — for man is the image of the King.

ḥūr bēh b-ṣalmā d-alāhā: w-hā tamān ṣīr ba-rnāshā.

Look upon the image of God, and behold, there man is portrayed;

Regarde l'image de Dieu, et voici, là l'homme est dépeint ;

w-adhīq ʿal ṣalmā d-nāshā: wa-ḥzī tamān l-alāhā.

and gaze upon the image of man, and see God there.

et penche-toi sur l'image de l'homme, et vois Dieu là.

ʾīth ban ma(d)ʿā d-lā mettmīsh: w-tarʿītā d-lā methgashshā.

In us is a mind that cannot be touched, and a thought that cannot be grasped,

āp ṣvyānā d-lā mashpel: w-reʿyānā d-lā methgasham.

and a will that does not stoop, and a mind that is not made of body.

ʾīth ban napshā d-lā māytā: aykh d-alāhā lā māath.

In us is a soul that does not die, just as God does not die,

for whether in light or in darkness, it abides in life for ever.

hānāw hāw ṣalmā d-qabel: shūlṭānā ʿal kul d-arʿā.

This is that image which received dominion over all that is on earth,

ḥrēnā hāw gēyr ṣlmā d-ʾīth ban: wa-ḥrēnā hāw āp shūlṭānā.

for one thing is the image that is in us, and another thing again is the dominion.

'Let us make man in our image' — to this image he gave dominion,

hewyū damī w-shaʿbedh kul: b-īdaʿthā ṣlem alāhā.

it was this likeness that subdued all things — the image of God is in knowledge.

engēyr shūlṭānā hāw ṣalmā: la-ytāwhī ṣalmā ṣydh klnāsh.

For if dominion were the image, then not everyone would have the image,

Car si la domination était l'image, alors tous n'auraient pas l'image,

b-khlnāsh dēyn ʾīthāwhī ṣlmēh: b-napshā madaʿā w-ḥērūtā.

but in every person his image exists — in the soul, in mind, and in freedom.

elū shūlṭānā hāw ṣalmā: b-pūrsē ṣeprē lā ṣādh (h)wā.

If dominion were the image, he would not have to snare birds by traps —

endēyn b-ḥekhmā kābēsh kul: ṣlem alāhā reʿyānā hāw.

but if it is by wisdom that he subdues all, then the mind is the image of God.

shūlṭānā qrā l-īdaʿtēh: bāh shālē nūnaī yamā.

He called his knowledge dominion: by it he draws in the fish of the sea,

bāh marken neshrē l-ʿūmqā: bāh kānēsh ḥaywath barā.

by it he brings eagles down to the deep, by it he gathers in the beasts of the wild.

bāh pālē yamā w-yavshā: w-māēsh b-rāwmā wa-b-ʿūmqā.

By it he parts sea and dry land, and searches out both height and depth.

for however high the righteous soar in flight, they come to rest upon the rank of the Watchers.

wa-l-arʿā qārē shmayā: wa-l-yavshā yamā mkane.

and calls the earth 'heaven,' and names the dry land 'sea.'

terwe lam ḥarbī ba-shmayā: ba-shmayā ḥarbā ʿal men.

'My sword shall be sated in heaven' — a sword in heaven, against whom?

l-vābēl hāw qārē shmayā: d-ḥapī l-arʿā shūlṭānāh.

He calls Babylon 'heaven,' because its dominion covered the earth.

emarat d-esaq la-shmayā: nvūkadhnāṣar l-ʾōreshlem.

'I will ascend to heaven,' you said — Nebuchadnezzar, against Jerusalem;

« Je monterai au ciel », as-tu dit — Nabuchodonosor, contre Jérusalem ;

w-ʿal kāwkbē d-ēyl trīm kūrsyākh: ʿal kāhnē tsīm

'and above the stars of God I will raise my throne' — over the priests you shall set
