shūvḥā lākh ʿābēdh nāshā: kmā mlēyn ʿūthrā tūqānayk.

Glory to you, Maker of mankind, how full of riches are your works,

lākh shūvḥā men kul da-b-rayt: ba-shmayā w-ba-ʾrʿā āmēyn.

to you glory from all you created, in heaven and on earth, amen.

b-ʿaynā d-rūḥā eshaʿyā: ḥezāyhī (h)wā l-ʿālmā d-ʿābar lēh.

With the eye of the spirit, Isaiah had seen the world passing away,

wa-b-pūmā da-nvīūtā: ba-ʿmīrā w-ʿūpyā mathlēh.

and with the mouth of prophecy he likened it to grass and to a flower.

kul b-sar lam ʿmīrā ʾīthāwhī: w-yāyūtēh ʿūpyā d-ḥaqlā.

All flesh, he said, is grass, and its beauty the flower of the field,

yābēsh ʿmīrā w-āp ḥāmē: w-meltēh d-māryā qayāmā.

the grass withers and the flower too fades, but the word of the Lord stands firm.

shapīr ṣārēh eshaʿyā: l-ʿūmrā d-ʿālmā ʿābaōrā.

Beautifully Isaiah portrayed the dwelling of this passing world,

wa-b-qūshtā mtal yāyūtēh: b-ʿūpyā d-ḥām w-lā yadhīʿ.

and in truth he likened its beauty to a flower that fades and is not known.

w-aydā (h)ī ʿelthā da-qrātēh: l-hānā sharbā d-nethmalal.

And what was the cause that called him to speak this discourse,

w-men aykā ḥzāyhī (h)w l-ʿālmā: w-da-myēh la-ʿmīrā d-ḥaqlā.

and from where had he seen the world, and likened it to the grass of the field?

et d'où avait-il vu le monde, pour le comparer à l'herbe du champ ?

aynā reʿyānā shaqlēh: d-nezmar hādē ba(r)th qālā.

What thought took hold of him, that he should sing this utterance,

b-aynā nīshā ḥāar (h)wā: pshīq hāw d-nēlap galyāīth.

at what mark was he looking? It is easy to learn plainly.

vers quel signe regardait-il ? Il est facile de l'apprendre clairement.

l-shūḥlāpē d-zavnā ḥzā (h)wā: kad methyablīn ʿal ʿālmā.

He had seen the changes of time, as they were brought upon the world,

wa-l-malkē kad methḥarbīn: w-hāpkīn ḥārbīn la-ḥdhādē.

and kings as they laid waste, and turned to lay waste one another.

ḥzā l-shūlṭānē d-aykh ḥelmā: pārdīn ʿābarīn men nāshā.

He saw powers that, like a dream, scatter and pass away from man,

wa-l-da-rgē d-rāmīn yāwmān: w-la-mḥār aykh lā ʾītayhōn.

and ranks that are high today, and tomorrow are as though they were not.

ḥzā d-ʿadh ātyān ḥadwāthā: adrekh enēyn ʿā(q)ythā.

He saw that while joys were coming, sorrows overtook them,

w-ʿadh meshtare b-ṭābthā: ʿal bātarhēyn b-īshāthā.

and while one was loosed into good things, evils entered after them.

ḥzā d-ethmālī ḥadh nāshēv (h)wā: wa-ḥrēnā mhabev yāwmān.

He saw that yesterday one blew forth, and another flowers today,

w-lā hāw qadī rabūtēh: w-hānā ʿbar lēh men d-īlēh.

and that one's greatness did not endure, and this one has passed away from what was his.

ḥzā l-ʿūthrā d-aykh ṭelālā hāw: w-ba-d-mūth la-hgā shūlṭānē.

He saw that riches are like a shadow, and powers after the manner of a whisper,

w-aykh ḥezwā d-lelyā enōn: da-rgē rāmē w-makīkē.

and that high and low ranks alike are like a vision of the night.

ḥzā d-pāsʿā gīgal zavnā: wa-l-wāth ḥadh lā methkalyā.

He saw that the wheel of time strides on, and for no one does it halt,

w-ʿadh ṣāmaḥ nāsh āwfī lēh: w-kad yārēv aykh lā ʾītāwhī.

and while a man flourishes it has already finished him, and while he grows great he is as though he were not.

ḥar bēh b-ʿālmā d-da-gālā hāw: w-ḥūbēh ṣēydh nāsh lā mkatar.

He looked at the world, that it is false, and its love toward man does not endure,

w-lā shūlṭānēh methqadē: w-lā ʿūthrēh da-l-ʿālam hāw.

and its power does not last, nor is its riches everlasting.

ethbaqī b-ṭakhsē rāmē: kad nāshbīn b-ʾūḥdānayhōn.

Consider the high ranks, while they flourish in their dominions,

w-ʿadh magar qalīl āwpīw: w-layt enōn shūlṭānayhōn.

and yet after a little while they end, and their dominions are no more.

ḥzā d-mā d-ʿelat ṭalyūthā: ʿelat bāthrāh saybūtā.

He saw that when youth had entered, old age entered after it,

w-men da-rghā da-ʿlaymūtā: eḥdat lāh yaqīrūtā.

and from the rank of youthfulness, heaviness took hold of it.

ḥzā l-ʿatīrē b-pūnāqā: wa-l-da-yānē b-ʾūḥdānā.

He saw the rich in luxury, and judges in dominion,

w-rēshānē ba-ghnōnayhōn: w-rabaī ḥaylē b-sedhrayhōn.

and rulers in their bridal chambers, and captains of hosts in their ranks.

shalyṭānē b-ṭakhsayhōn: w-arkōnē b-pūqdānayhōn.

rulers in their ranks, and magistrates in their commands,

wa-l-malkē ʿam tāgayhōn: wa-l-ḥarthā d-khlhēyn māwtā.

and kings with their crowns, and at the end of them all, death.

b-hālēyn ḥar (h)wā eshaʿyā: w-ba-d-sagīān men hālēyn.

On these things Isaiah looked, and on many more besides these,

w-reʿyānēh b-temhā shaqlēh: d-ba-ʿmīrā l-ʿālmā namtal.

and wonder seized his thought, that he should liken the world to grass.

w-kad mahel (h)wā b-shūlṭānēh: w-yāhv ʿāyā l-ʾūḥdānē.

And while he pondered on its power, and gave thought to dominions,

nvīūthā b-gāw reʿyānēh: ṣalmā l-ʿālmā ṣārat (h)wāth.

prophecy, within his thought, was tracing an image for the world.

palegh napshēh gelyānā: ṣydh mashmaʿtēh da-nvyā.

The vision divided itself, toward the hearing of the prophet,

da-b-qālē ʿpīpē nalep: sharbēh d-ʿālmā aykh d-ʾīthāwhī.

that in fitting words he should teach the story of the world as it is.

qālā lam d-āmar qrī: w-emar lēh mānā eqre.

A voice, it says, said, "Cry out"; and he said to it, "What shall I cry?"

Une voix, dit-il, dit : « Crie » ; et il lui dit : « Que crierai-je ? »

w-manū kaī hāw d-āmar (h)wā: w-manū hānā d-ʿānē lēh.

And who then was the one who spoke, and who was this one who answered him?

(h)ī nvīūtā nehmat (h)wāt: ba-b-nāth qālē tāmtā.

That prophecy murmured in twin voices,

Cette prophétie murmurait en voix jumelles,

kad pāqdā w-kad methʿanyā: nvī b-sharbēh nethnahar.

as it commanded and as it was answered, that the prophet through its account might be enlightened.

lelyānā ba-thrēyn pūmīn: rātam (h)wā l-wāth eshaʿyā.

A murmuring with two mouths it was harnessing toward Isaiah,

nvīūtā b-ghāw reʿyānēh: ba-thrēyn qālyn nehmat (h)wāt.

Prophecy, within his thought, murmured with two voices,

ḥadh qālā d-āmar qrī: wa-ḥrēnā d-mānā eqre.

one voice that said, "Cry out", and another, "What shall I cry?"

une voix qui disait : « Crie », et une autre : « Que crierai-je ? »

klbsar lam ʿmīrā ʾīthāwhī: w-yāyūtēh ʿūpyā d-ḥaqlā.

"All flesh", it says, "is grass, and its beauty the flower of the field,"

wa-ʿmīrā w-ʿūpyā yābēsh: d-rūḥēh d-māryā neshbat bēh.

and the grass and the flower wither when the breath of the Lord blows upon it.

aykh da-b-melthā eshtamʿat: (h)ī ba(r)th qālā l-eshaʿyā.

As in a word it was heard, that utterance, by Isaiah,

d-ḥatītāīth nestakal: sharbēh d-ʿālmā d-ʿāvōrā hāw.

that he might understand precisely the story of this passing world.

nvīūthā ʿemdat sheqlat: d-yūqnēh d-ʿālmā teḥshōl (h)wth.

Prophecy dipped and took up clay, that it might fashion the likeness of the world,

w-ʿūpyā leqṭat d-teʿbedh lēh: taṣbīthā d-qalīl zavnā.

and gathered a flower, to make of it an ornament of a little while.

msamdhīn lēh la-ḥkūshthānē: w-shagūshthānē myaqrīn lēh.

Schemers cluster about him, and agitators do him honor.

rāhṭīn bāthrēh wa-qdāmāwhī: shūpardaīqē rhīvāīth.

Behind him and before him run bodyguards in haste,

hdīr ba-l-b-w-shē rēshāyē: d-ḥīl wa-mʿaṭap payūtā.

He is adorned in princely garments, feared, and clothed with splendor,

mgazaī paghrēh wa-mpanaq: d-l-īq wa-shvīḥ parṣōpēh.

his body pampered and cared for, radiant and glorious his face,

rāhṭā meltēh tkhīvāīth: w-pethgāmāwhī ḥarīpāīth.

his word runs forcefully, and his sayings sharply.

mshalaṭ wa-d-ḥīl pūqdānēh: w-khlmā d-āmar qām hāw.

His command is mighty and feared, and whatever he says stands firm,

b-gāw pūmēh da-gālūtā: wa-d-makes lēh lā qarīv.

in his mouth is falsehood, and none who rebukes him draws near.

b-hapkāyāthā methḥashaḥ: w-lā nāsh mamraḥ tākēs lēh.

He deals in perversities, and no one dares to reprove him,

shkhīḥān lēh da-gālātē: w-nāṣarīn lēh d-qūshtā malelt.

falsehoods are ready for him, and they maintain for him that he has spoken truth.

b-ʿāūlā rāhēṭ leshānēh: w-yāmēyn ḥlāpāwhī da-shrārā hāw.

His tongue runs in wrongdoing, and they swear on his behalf that it is truth,

rkhīvā meltēh ʿal shūqrā: wa-mqalsānāwhī sagīīn.

his word rides upon falsehood, and his flatterers are many.

zpān mamllā d-leshānēh: wa-pṣīḥīn bēh shāmōʿāwhī.

Deceitful is the speech of his tongue, yet his hearers rejoice in it,

da-hbēh pūmā hāwē lēh: w-leshānā mlīlā ʿūthrēh.

his gold becomes for him a mouth, and his riches a tongue that speaks.

w-meṭul da-hdīr ba-l-b-w-shāwhī: ṭāv shapīrīn pethgāmāwhī.

And because he is adorned in his garments, his sayings seem very fair,

aynā gēyr shūprā ʾīth bēh: w-lā nātar aykh habāvā.

For what beauty is there that does not fall like a bud,

aynā shūlṭānā mqāwe: w-lā aykh ʿūpyā metṭalaq.

what power endures, and is not destroyed like a flower?

en ʿūthrā hā ʿābar lēh: w-en da-hvā tūv pāēsh lēh.

If riches, behold, they pass away, and even gold too is left behind,

n shūprā methḥabal lēh: w-en shūlṭānā bāṭal lēh.

if beauty is corrupted, and if power comes to nothing,

lā malkā mqāwe tāgēh: w-lā da-yānā ʾūḥdānēh.

no king's crown endures, nor any judge's dominion,

lā rabā b-d-īlēh pāēsh: āplā zʿōrā methpaṣe.

no great man remains in what is his, nor is the small man spared.

da-rgē d-rāʿmīn (h)wāw ethmālī: aykan yāwmn hā ṣādēyn.

Ranks that thundered yesterday, how today, behold, they lie desolate,

w-shalyṭē d-ba-zūh l-arʿā: shaʿbedhw l-ʿamm sagyē.

and rulers who plundered the earth, who enslaved many peoples,

all of them died like beasts, they rest, and their memorials have ceased.

aykā enōn da-yānā: qadamāyē ʿam ṭakhsayhōn.

Where are the judges, the earlier ones, with their ranks?

da-b-zavnayhōn eshtamahw: w-hā da-ʿīkhīn sharbayhōn.

They who in their days were renowned, and behold, their stories are now extinguished.

aykā nōn malkē qademē: da-mlāw da-hvā gazayhōn.

Where are the ancient kings, who filled their treasuries with gold,

wa-l-ʿālmā w-ʿūthrēh kavshūhī: w-hāshā hwāw aykh lā medem.

and subdued the world and its riches, and now have become as nothing?

ʾykā enōn arkōnē: da-b-ʿammayhōn ethnaṣaḥw.

Where are the magistrates, who were renowned among their peoples,

wa-b-nāw w-aqīmw mḥōzē: wa-npalw henōn aykh sharkā.

and built and raised up cities, and yet themselves have fallen like all the rest?

aykā enōn māryā: da-qnāw ʿabdē sagīē.

Where are the masters, who owned many servants,

wa-qpasīw ʿūthrā d-lā sākā: w-hā shdēyn ba-shyōl ʿam klnāsh.

and amassed riches without number, and behold, they lie cast down in Sheol with everyone.

aykā enōn āp malkē: ʿam tāgē d-shūlṭānayhōn.

Where too are the kings, with the crowns of their authority,

kad ḥaīn alāhē (h)wāw: w-kad mītīw ʿaprā wa-syānā.

who while alive were gods, and when they died were dust and rot.

hā ʿal hālēyn shūḥlāpē: nvī b-gelyā akhrez (h)wā.

Behold, concerning these changes the prophet proclaimed openly,

klbsar lam ʿmīrā ʾītāwhī: w-yāyūtēh ʿūpyā d-ḥaqlā.

'All flesh,' he said, 'is grass, and its beauty the flower of the field.'

tūv katar lī shāmōʿā: wa-ḥzī l-khlbsar da-ʿmīrā hāw.

Again, wait for me, listener, and see that all flesh is grass.

Again I have this to show you: that the beauty of man is a flower.

b-ḥadh zavnā nshav w-eshtamah: w-men shelyā d-ʿekh shūlṭānēh.

At one time he blew forth and was renowned, and suddenly his authority was extinguished.

ethmālī mapregh ba-l-b-w-shē: w-yāwmānā qrīm ba-ghwāgaī.

Yesterday resplendent in garments, and today wrapped in a shroud.

b-ʿālmā hānā ethgaī: wa-b-ghāw qavrā ethparsī.

In this world he took pride, and in the grave he was laid bare.

hā qdām qalīl malkā (h)wā: w-hāshā ʿaprā aykh klnāsh.

Behold, a little while ago he was a king, and now dust like everyone.

yāwmān rēshā w-da-yānā: w-la-mḥār la-ytāwhī shūlṭānēh.

Today a chief and a judge, and tomorrow his authority is no more.

kad ḥaī d-w-myā d-alāhā: w-kad mīth d-w-myā d-ḥaywāthā.

While alive the likeness of God, and when dead the likeness of beasts.

kmā da-b-ʿālmā hāw nāṣēḥ (h)wā: npaq menēh shrekh la-ḥvālā.

As much as he had shone in the world, once it left him, what remained went to corruption.

l-ḥayūtēh pāqōdhūtā: wa-l-māwtēh shatīqūtā.

To his life belonged command, and to his death, silence.

mā d-īrev eshtapal lēh: hā d-nettrīm ethmakakh lēh.

When he grew great, he was brought low; behold, he who was to be exalted was humbled.

hwā rabā qām b-ʾūḥdānēh: mṭāyhī qeṣā nḥeth la-ʿghānā.

He became great, he stood in his dominion; his end came upon him, he went down to the pit.

ya(h)v shūḥdā nsav shūlṭānā: thā māwtā shrāyhī men da-rgēh.

He gave a bribe, took power; death came and loosed him from his rank.

qnā da-hvā ḥṭaf rabūtā: qrev ʿūndānā āwpī lēh.

He acquired gold, he seized greatness; departure drew near and finished him.

ethmālī qnōmā rāghōshā: w-yāwmān ʿaprā shatīqā.

Yesterday a sentient being, and today silent dust.

qdām zavnā ge (h)wā paghrēh: w-men shelyā d-ʿekh ṣūrātēh.

A while ago his body was splendid, and suddenly his features were extinguished.

w-mā d-qām nāsh ʿal shūlṭānā: l-bakh da-rgē d-rēshānūtā.

And when a man rises to power, he seizes the ranks of leadership.

qnā rabūthā eshtaqal: ettrīm wa-ṭʿā la-khyānēh.

He gains greatness, he is lifted up; he is exalted and forgets his own nature.

ʿevrat lāh men reʿyānēh: d-men medhrā nsīv qūlāʿēh.

It passes from his mind that his clay was taken from the ground.

w-akhmā d-lāw ʿaprā hāw gensēh: hā mbaʿeṭ la-knāwātēh.

As though his origin were not dust, behold, he spurns his fellows,

l-hānā dān wa-mḥayev: wa-l-hāw māḥē w-methlaḥam.

this one he judges and condemns, and that one he strikes and wars against.

l-ḥadh gāzam w-la-ḥrēyn tākēs: wa-b-ḥadh kāē wa-mdaḥel.

One he threatens, another he chastises, and against one he rages and terrifies,

aykh alāhā methgae: ʿal mesknā bar zāwgēh.

like God he exalts himself over the poor man, his fellow.

w-lā ḥāar ṣēydh da-ḥīḥēh: da-ghvīltēh men tamān (h)ī.

And he does not look to his own dust, that his moulding is from thence.

w-mā d-hā nettrīm ba-shrārā: wa-ṭʿā l-arʿā d-emēh (h)ī.

And when, behold, he is truly exalted, and forgets that the earth is his mother,

tā māwtā qafḥēh wa-ḥmā: b-ṭel klēh w-āwpī sharbēh.

death comes, strikes him and burns; all of him ceases and his tale is finished.

qalīl zavnā apregh (h)wā: aykh habāvā b-payūtēh.

For a little while he blossomed, like a flower in its beauty,

wa-mṭāyhī ḥūmā d-ʿūndānā: w-shav aykh ʿūpyā w-ethḥarakh.

and the heat of departure reached him, and he withered like a flower, and was scorched.

āp ʿūpyā gēyr mathhar hāw: qalīl zavnā l-ḥazāyāwhī.

For even the flower gives delight for a little while to those who see it,

w-ḥāṭap hāw ḥzāthā ṣdāwhī: d-ʿāvōrē da-nḥūrūn bēh.

and it snatches the gaze of passersby, that they may look upon it.

shābē hāw shūprā d-habāvā: l-halākē d-nesṭōn ṣēdāwhī.

The beauty of the flower captivates travelers, that they turn aside to it.

w-nātēp l-hōn men ʾūrḥā: l-wātēh d-neḥzōn payūtēh.

and draws them from the road, toward it, to see its beauty.

ḥadh peqḥā zʿōrā b-ghāwnēh: kālē l-sīʿtā d-tagārē.

A single small bloom, in its color, halts a company of merchants,

wa-b-shūprēh nāgēdh ṣēdāwhī: l-aylēyn d-ʿābarīn ṣēydh wa-ʿdēh.

and by its beauty draws to itself those who pass by its place.

metdamrīn bēh ḥazāyē: b-ghāwnā da-ʿṭīp habāvā.

Onlookers marvel at it, at the color the flower wears,

w-thāmhīn qāymīn ʿāvōrē: d-nethbaqōn ba-shvīḥūtēh.

and passersby stand amazed, to gaze upon its splendor.

kāēp ṣēdāwhī qāwmāthā: w-methgahnīn da-nḥūrūn bēh.

Figures bend toward it, and stoop down to look upon it,

w-mā d-qaṭfūhī d-nethpargōn bēh: sharī shūprēh

and when they pluck it to delight in it, its beauty begins

methḥabal.

to decay.

à se corrompre.

yābēsh ḥāmē w-metṭalaq: nātar māwpe w-lā īdhīʿ.

It dries, wilts, and is destroyed; it drops, fades away, and is unknown.

ābēdh klēh w-methḥarakh: w-la-ytāwhī ḥezwēh shapīrā.

All of it perishes and is scorched, and its beautiful appearance is no more.

maḥme lēh shemshā l-ghāwnēh: w-lā methyadhʿā payūtēh.

The sun scorches its color, and its beauty is no longer known.

ṣāaḥ bēh ḥūmā w-nāpēl: w-ābēdh zīwā men ṭarpāwhī.

Heat blazes upon it and it falls, and its brightness perishes from its petals.

nāpḥā bēh rūḥā w-ʿābar: w-āplā methyadhʿā d-w-ktēh.

The wind blows upon it and it passes away, and even its place is not known.

w-hānā d-ḥazāyē tharw bēh: ʿadh bāʿēyn lēh lā ʾīthwhī.

And this thing at which onlookers marveled, while they still seek it, is no more.

dāmē zavnēh d-ba-rnāshā: lēh l-habāvā shapīrā.

The time of man is like the beautiful flower,

wa-b-qūshtā zmar eshaʿyā: d-yāyūtēh d-nāshā ʿūpyā (h)ī.

and truly Isaiah sang that the beauty of man is a flower.

hākanā shūprēh d-ʿālmā: āp hederēh āp shūlṭānēh.

So too the beauty of the world, and also its glory, and its power,

āp ʿūthrēh w-rēshānūtēh: āp ṭakhsā d-pāqōdhūtēh.

also its wealth and its leadership, also the order of its command.

pe ʿatīrā mle zavnā: w-īdhīʿ aḥīdh shūlṭānā.

The rich man, full of years, is fair; and the famous man holds power,

rghīgh shūprā d-rēshānūthā: wa-rḥīmā pāqōdhūtā.

the beauty of leadership is desirable, and command is beloved.

w-mā d-habevw ṭakhsē rāmē: nshavw w-eshtamahw da-yānē.

And when the high orders have blossomed, judges are renowned and gain fame,

adhīq māwtā shārē kul: b-ṭelīw ʾūḥdānē w-āḥōdē.

death peers in, dissolves all: dominions and rulers alike cease.

mā da-sghī ʿūthrēh d-gavrā: wa-thqef wa-ʿshen qenyānēh.

When a man's wealth grows great, and his possessions become firm and strong,

ʿal māwtā da-b-rēh wa-npaq: pāsh sīmātēh la-ḥrānē.

death enters and takes him and departs; his treasures remain for others.

w-mā d-eshtamah shalīṭā: w-qām ʿal da-rgh d-ʾūḥdānā.

And when a ruler becomes renowned, and rises to the rank of dominion,

zeʿrat lāh mūshḥath ḥayāwhī: d-ethā nāwlēh la-ghdhādā.

the measure of his life grows short, for his passage-fare has come due for the crossing.

w-mā d-bar wa-ḥṭaf ʿatīrā: wa-mlā gazāwhī ītīrē.

And when the rich man has taken and seized, and filled his treasuries to overflowing,

ʿal qeṣā da-b-rēh wa-npaq: hwā yatīrā l-marhāṭāwhī.

his end entered, took him, and departed; he became abundance for his heirs.

w-mā d-ethparas zalīlā: wa-sqal naḥtā da-l-b-w-shēh.

And when the base man prospers, and adorns the garment he wears,

nepḥat remthā b-taṣbītēh: hwāth tenānā ʿal gūshmēh.

a worm breeds in his finery, it turns to smoke upon his body.

w-mā d-apregh nāsh payāīth: mle zavnā aykh habāvā.

And when a man blossoms fairly, full of years, like a flower,

rūḥā d-ʿūndānā shqaptēh: w-deʿkat klāh payūtēh.

the wind of departure withers him, and all his beauty is extinguished.

hā ʿal hālēyn akhrez (h)wā: nvī mshabḥā eshaʿyā.

Behold, concerning these things the glorious prophet Isaiah proclaimed,

d-khlnāsh aykh ʿmīrā ʾītāwhī: w-yāyūtēh ʿūpyā d-ḥaqlā.

that every man is like grass, and his beauty the flower of the field.

b-rīkh hāw mārā d-kul zavnīn: d-ʿam zavnē lā meshtaḥlap.

Blessed is the Lord of all times, who does not change along with the times,

w-meltēh qayāmā l-ʿālam: w-lā mthōm ʿābar shūlṭānēh.

and whose word stands forever, and whose dominion never passes away.

d-khlbsar ʿmīrā.

That all flesh is grass.

Que toute chair est herbe.
