lā hākēyl tēte l-ʿēdtā: d-mūtā d-ṣehyōn ʿam neshē.

Let not, then, the custom of Zion come to church along with the women,

d-ethḥadath lēh d-w-bārā: ʿatīqā b-denḥā ḥadhtā.

for its old way was renewed for it, at a new dawning.

ʿlaymātēh d-ʿamā qadhmā: ba-plagē zayaḥ ʿēdē.

The maidens of the former people kept festivals in choirs,

ʿēdtā dēyn shethqā peqdat: l-neshē d-ātyān la-ṣlōthā.

but the church commanded silence for the women who come to prayer;

mais l'église a commandé le silence aux femmes qui viennent à la prière ;

wa-ḥlāp qālē da-zmārā: d-ṣabetīw (h)wāw la-khnūshāthā.

and instead of the voices of song that used to adorn the assemblies,

ḥūshābē taqnē tābaʿ: knūshyā rabā d-ʿēdāthā.

the great assembly of the churches demands well-ordered thoughts.

mā d-ātē l-karkā rabā: ṣalmā ḥadhtā d-malkūthā.

When it comes to the great city, a new image of the kingdom,

klnāsh rāhēṭ la-ḥzātēh: wa-b-ṣūrātēh methbaqe.

everyone runs to see it, and gazes upon its features;

chacun court pour la voir, et contemple ses traits ;

w-karkhā klēh meṣṭabath: wa-mqabel ṣalmā d-malkā.

and the whole city adorns itself, and receives the image of the king,

w-aykh da-l-ḥayā mzayaḥ lēh: l-yūqnā mīthā d-sammānē.

and, as though it were alive, honors it — a dead likeness wrought in colors.

āp tēbēyl ba-d-mūth karkhā: ṣalmā ḥadhthā ethā lāh.

The world too, after the manner of a city, a new image has come to it.

w-shaqlēh w-sāmēh ṭāʿōnēh: ba-rqīʿā l-ʿal men klā.

And he took it up, and its bearer set it in the firmament, high above all.

d-ḥīl (h)wā ḥezwā wa-mshaghnaī: wa-d-ḥīl menēh ṭāʿōnēh.

The sight was fearsome and disturbing, and its bearer too was afraid of it.

gle ṣalmā wa-khse rāzēh: w-kēmath rūghzā makhrez lan.

The image was disclosed, but its mystery concealed — that is, it proclaims wrath to us.

ṣlmā d-malkā ʿal malkā: malep l-arʿā d-shūlṭānēh.

The image of a king, concerning a king, teaches the land of his dominion,

and his likeness makes known his time — whether he is young or old.

w-ṣlmā d-ṣārat kēnūtā: ʿal kēnūtā rāmēz lan.

And the image that justice painted signals to us concerning justice,

wa-ḥdhā mḥōtā maghbe lan: en shevyā w-en māwtānā.

and a single blow determines for us — whether captivity or plague.

d-lā sepqat la-thyāvūtan: mardūtā arʿānāytā.

For earthly discipline did not suffice for our repentance,

shavṭā d-rāwmā eshtadar: b-ātā d-shevyā wa-d-ḥarbā.

a rod from on high was sent, with a sign of captivity and of the sword.

lā shaḥleptan kēnūtēh: w-ba-sīmūtēh d-alāhā.

His justice has not changed toward us, nor his goodness — that of God's,

d-kēnūtēh l-reṭnā qrātan: w-ba-sīmūtēh la-ḥṭīthā.

for his justice summoned us to grumbling, and his goodness to sin.

qām rūghzā la-mkhāwānū: b-zāwʿē w-nāwdē d-arʿāthā.

Wrath arose to make itself known, in the shaking and trembling of the lands,

w-lā ethkāwanw ḥaṭāyē: men avdānā d-ḥavrayhōn.

yet sinners did not take warning from the ruin of their companions.

wa-hpakh tūv ethā shelyā: w-ʿamēh tūv savʿā rabā.

And again it turned back, coming quietly, and with it, once more, great abundance,

wa-ṭʿamnāyhī men tāwdītā: l-yāhōvā d-kahīnūtā.

and it weaned them from confession to him who is the giver of abundance.

w-hāshā d-sahdan tāvaōʿā: qdām rūghzā b-āthā d-rūghzā.

And now, as our accuser pursues us before wrath, with a sign of wrath,

tāw nevṣōr men pūnāqē: ʿadhlā nēthōn shūnāqē.

come, let us abstain from luxuries, before the torments come.

manīū menkhōn da-khnīshīn: ethbaqī pārōshāīt.

Who among you, who are gathered together, has looked closely

mshalīn da-khmā w-aykanā: qāam shūqā d-ṣvwāthā.

They ask how much, and in what manner, the market of goods stands,

w-khlnāsh rānē ba-thʿāshēh: wa-mʿaqev ʿal yūthrānēh.

and everyone thinks of his trade, and inquires about his profit,

w-shīṭā b-ʿaynāwhī da-nshael: ʿal nīshā da-qbaʿ rūghzā.

and it seems trivial to him to ask about the purpose for which wrath was set.

kapnā da-hwā b-ghāw meṣrēyn: b-ḥelmē l-perʿōn ethbadaq.

The famine that occurred in Egypt was revealed to Pharaoh in dreams,

w-kad ṭāv savʿā qadem (h)wā: qdhāmāwhī kapnā ethbadaq.

and though abundance came first, famine was made known before it.

w-tartēyn zabanīn ethmalalw: ʿam perʿōn rāzēī kapnā.

And twice the mysteries of the famine were told to Pharaoh,

bārōyā ʿapēh l-ḥelmā: da-ṭrūnā pyāsā nqabel.

the Creator doubled the dream, that the tyrant might accept persuasion.

āp yāwsep da-fshar ḥelmē: hādē l-perʿōn āmar (h)wā.

Joseph too, who interpreted dreams, said this to Pharaoh:

d-ʿal ṭūyābēh d-sūʿrānā: akhrez lākh ba-thrēyn ḥelmīn.

'because of the certainty of the matter, he declared it to you by two dreams.'

lan hākēyl aykh da-l-da-mkē: ḥlāp ḥelmē b-rūmḥā da-qran.

To us, then, as to the sluggish, instead of dreams, he cried out with a spear,

w-zabnāthā sagyāthā: ḥzaynāh l-ātā d-avdānā.

and many times we have seen the sign of destruction.

l-ḥanpē b-ḥelmē rdā kēnā: w-lan d-īlan kad ʿīrīnan.

To the pagans, in dreams, justice proceeded; but to us, his own, while we were awake.

l-malkē d-meṣrēyn wa-d-vāvēl: b-ḥelmē shāwdaʿ kasyāthā.

To the kings of Egypt and of Babylon, in dreams he made known hidden things,

lan dēyn āplā galyāthā: kaḥedh lan men sanyāthā.

but from us he hid not even the open things, among the hateful things.

w-kad lā galyā mapaqtan: nevṣōr qalīl men ʿāūlan.

yalepnan lan ba-ḥrānē: d-ʿūmrā d-zavnā hāw bēyth ḥayē.

We have learned it for ourselves through others: that our dwelling in time is a house of the living,

w-kasyā menan āp hādē: ātā da-hwāth ba-shmayā.

w-kad ʿal rūghzā remzat lan: lā galyā da-b-men sālaq.

and though it hinted to us of wrath, it is not clear against whom it rises.

en māwtā kse bāh gūnḥā hāw: w-en shevyā tūv avdānā hāw.

Whether death conceals in it disaster, or captivity again a ruin.

tāw hākēyl nedhḥōq enōn: la-thrayhōn ba-thyāvūtan.

Come, then, let us drive them both away by our repentance,

nethavlān yalādātē: w-nethpanyān la-ṣlāwāth.

let the young women mourn, and let them turn back to prayers,

d-lā neḥrōv neshdē māwtā: yaldayhēyn wa-rḥūmayhēyn.

lest death lay waste and cast away their children and their loved ones.

ṭalyūtā dēyn tethkaḥadh: w-zalīlūthā tethnakap.

Let youth then be restrained, and let wantonness be curbed,

da-mʿādh hāw shavṭēh d-māwtā: d-nethʿazaz ʿal tartayhēyn.

for the rod of death is accustomed to grow fierce against them both;

car la verge de la mort a coutume de s'acharner contre elles deux ;

tevʿe dēyn āp saybūtā: da-l-qāvōryh lā teqbōr.

let old age too demand this: that it not bury those who should have buried it,

w-en māwtā ʿlaymē kanesh: sābē b-raḥmē meshtavqīn.

and if death gathers up the young, the old are left behind in mercy.

Behold the trumpet in the heavens, that calls and rouses us from sleep,

w-ba-thyāvūtā methḥamal: wa-l-tarʿūtā meshtaḥlap.

but by repentance it is stayed, and turned aside to reconciliation.

w-b-īshē da-plaṭw men rūghzā: npalīw ba-b-ʿāthā d-ḥeryānā.

and the wicked, who escaped from wrath, fell into the pit of strife.

but the simple, who saw the truth, reckoned it the finger of God.

the reckless twisted with falsehood, through the lying of the Chaldeans.

w-nakes napshan ba-ḥzātēh: d-lā takes lan mardūtēh.

And let us slay ourselves at the sight of it, that its discipline not put us to shame.

ṣlōthā zaynā tehwe lan: w-taqrev l-w-qbal nekyānē.

Let prayer be our weapon, that draws near against foes,

w-ba-thyāvūtā nethḥamal: saypā da-l-ṭīsh la-thbaʿthā:

and by repentance let it be stayed — the sword sharpened for vengeance:

ʾīth aykā d-shemṭat saypā: ṣlōthā w-ḥerbat nūkhrāyē.

There is a place where prayer drew the sword, and cut down foreigners,

w-ʾīth aykā d-ḥemlat saypā: ṣlōthā w-perqat ba-ytāyē.

and there is a place where prayer sheathed the sword, and rescued those of the household.

ṣlōtēh ḥnīghtā d-ḥēzaqyā: shemṭat saypā ʿal āthōr.

The anguished prayer of Hezekiah drew the sword against Assyria,

wa-ṣlōtēh d-khītā d-dāwīdh: ḥemlat saypā men ʿamā.

and the pure prayer of David sheathed the sword from the people.

hā pelātā taqnātā: lā nephe ba-srīqāthā.

Behold, well-ordered wonders — let us not go astray in vain things,

d-māwtā shābayā methbaṭal: ba-ṣlāwāthā nakpāthā.

for the death that takes captive is annulled by chaste prayers.

malakh māwtā d-eshtadar: men alāhā ʿal yahūdh.

The angel of death that was sent from God against Judah,

ba-ṣlōtēh d-hāw bar ʾīshaī: eshtayan wa-ḥmal saypēh.

by the prayer of that son of Jesse, was appeased, and stayed its sword.

w-mashrīthā d-āthōrāyā: d-ba-ghzāmā l-ṣehyōn etat.

And the camp of the Assyrian, that came against Zion in threat,

ḥēzaqyā ba-ṣlāwātēh: malakh māwtā armī bāh.

Hezekiah, by his prayers, cast the angel of death upon it.

ḥarav wa-shdā menāh alpē: w-rebwāthā ba-rpāp ʿaynā.

It laid waste, and cast down from it thousands and ten thousands in the twinkling of an eye.

ḥēzaqyā l-ghāw ethkashap: w-malakhā l-bar ethʿazaz.

Hezekiah entreated within, and the angel raged without,

Ézéchias suppliait au-dedans, et l'ange sévissait au-dehors,

w-shabāyā d-qadem wa-ḥzā: d-ethḥarbat lāh mashrītēh.

and the captor, who had earlier seen that his camp was laid waste,

ya(h)v athrā qdhām bāʿūtēh: d-ḥēzaqyā wa-ʿraq l-athrēh.

gave ground before his petition — that of Hezekiah — and fled to his own land.

rab hāw ḥaylāh da-ṣlōthā: w-d-īlāh enēyn tartayhēyn.

Great is the power of prayer, and both these are its own:

ʿal māwtā w-ḥayē shmīʿā: b-rāwmā w-ʿūmqā shalīṭā.

over death and life it is heard; in the height and the depth it has authority.

b-khūrhānā d-māwtā npal (h)wā: ḥēzaqyā bātar da-zkhā.

By the sickness of death Hezekiah fell, after he had conquered.

w-ba-ṣlōtēh asī marʿēh: w-āwsef lēh ʿal yāwmātēh.

and by his prayer he healed his sickness, and added to him upon his days.

samā hwāth lēh bāʿūthā: w-etdanyat la-thrēyn pūrsīn.

Petition was medicine for him, and it was granted for two purposes:

lēh yehbat samā d-ḥayē: w-lāthōrāyē āvdānā.

to him it gave the medicine of life, and to the Assyrians, destruction.

dāmyā ṣlōthā la-sbarthā: w-rāḥmēyh dāmēyn la-shlīḥē.

Prayer is like the gospel, and its friends resemble the apostles,

d-rēyḥḥ māwtā hwāw la-plīgē: w-rēyḥā d-ḥayē la-pshīṭē.

for they were an odor of death to the divided, but an odor of life to the sincere.

dāran dēyn marīr zavnā: ṣlōthā ḥrēthā eshkaḥ lēh.

But our age, a bitter time, has found another prayer,

da-ḥlāp melē d-bāʿūtā: pethgāmā bāʿē d-nesav.

that instead of the words of petition, seeks to receive an oracle.

w-qeṣmē ṭamē da-ndhīdīn: ʿal alāhā mārēkl.

And unclean, abominable divinations make traffic of God;

Et des divinations impures et abominables font commerce de Dieu ;

b-parṣōp deḥlath alāhā: meshtamshīn men ʿāwālē.

under the guise of the fear of God, they are practiced by the wicked.

w-hāda (h)ī ʿelthā d-avdānā: d-aykh ṭābāthā mestaʿran.

And this is the cause of destruction: that they are performed as though good things —

b-īshāthā men sagyēē: w-lā d-khē w-lā da-mkhāwen.

evils, by many, and none rebukes, and none corrects.

ḥzā b-īshā d-zaynā hāw ṭāvā: ʿenyānā da-ṣlāwāthā.

The Evil One saw that prayer is indeed a good weapon,

w-arḥeq menēh l-shāṭayā: b-thūkhlānā d-ʿal pethgām.

and drove far from it the scoffers, through trust placed in mere words.

w-shāṭūh saklē la-ṣlōthā: gazā d-khlhōn ʿūdhrānē.

And the foolish despised prayer — the treasury of all help —

w-rādēyn b-ʾūrḥā d-etdarshat: men zēpānē l-avdānā.

and walk in the way that was trodden by deceivers, toward destruction.

wa-b-qeṣmā msharēyn ʿaṭlē: bāʿūtā d-sūʿrānayhōn.

And with divination the wicked begin the inquiry of their affairs,

w-rāʿmīn tarʿē d-qāṣōmē: ṭāv men tarʿē d-ʿēdāthā.

and the doors of the diviners resound more than the doors of the churches.

d-mārkar a(n)tthā wa-d-mamkar: wa-d-zābn āp da-mzaban.

One who arranges a woman's marriage, and one who gives her in marriage, and one who buys, also one who sells,

d-vānē ba-ytā wa-d-sātar: d-ḥāzq b-ʾūrḥā wa-d-pāsh.

one who builds a house, and one who tears it down, one who journeys on the road, and one who remains —

w-khlnāsh b-aydā da-mshare: b-pethghāmē qāṣam l-w-qdam.

everyone, in whatever he begins, consults the oracle first.

kad mettakhlīn ṭāʿayā: d-sharīr qeṣmā wa-mhayman.

while those who err trust that the divination is true and reliable,

w-enhw d-gālēyn pethghāmē: b-w-dāqā da-ʿthīdhāthā.

and if indeed the oracles reveal things, it is by prying into what is to come.

tāw neqṣōm ʿal sūʿrānē: d-ʿelāyāīn men ʿūqābē.

Come, let us inquire about matters that are higher than mere concerns,

wa-nshael d-emathī hāwē: ʿūndānan āw nūḥāman.

and let us ask when it will be — our departure or our resurrection,

w-en qarīban yārēth lan: āw nūkhrāyā qābar lan.

and whether one near will inherit us, or a stranger will bury us.

hādē gēyr yatīrāīth: payā l-melath alāhā.

For this, indeed, is especially fitting for the word of God:

da-thbadhēq ʿal ṣebwāthā: da-ʿthydān wa-d-sharīrān.

that it disclose things that are future and that are true.

w-nesav lan tūba pethgāmē: ʿal (h)ī ḥarbā da-shmayā.

And let us take from it, too, an oracle concerning that sword of heaven,

wa-nbadheq lan qāṣōmā: ʿal shūlāmā da-khse bāh.

and let the oracle disclose to us the end that is hidden in it.

lāw hālēyn arʿānyāthā: malpīn kthāvāwhī d-alāhā.

Not these earthly things do the books of God teach,

da-l-ʿālmā ḥrēnā qārēyn: wa-msabrīn ʿal nūḥāmā.

for they call to another world, and give hope concerning the resurrection.

shāṭayā hāw dēyn sāmw enōn: tūqlāthā l-ʿamā sakhlā.

But the scoffers have set them as stumbling blocks for the foolish people,

w-ba-khthābē da-mlēyn ḥayē: kespā d-ʿāūlā ettagarw.

and in the writings full of life, the silver of iniquity was traded.

shqal neshē rūmyānayhēyn: wa-rheṭ la-thraʿ qāṣōmē.

He took women's [...], and ran to the door of the diviners,

w-ʿāwlē b-shem pethgāmē: ḥapīw rūshʿā d-qeṣmayhōn.

and the wicked, in the name of oracles, covered over the wickedness of their divinations.

ʿamlā rabā ʿmalīw kēnē: shlīḥē w-sāpārē w-khārōzē.

Great labor did the righteous labor — apostles, and scribes, and heralds —

w-hāydēyn da-kīw men arʿā: qeṣmē w-neḥshē w-malwāshē.

and then were purged from the earth divinations, and enchantments, and sorceries;

et alors furent purgées de la terre les divinations, les enchantements et les sorcelleries ;

w-yāwmānā da-pnāw ʿamm: men ṭāʿyūtā da-ptakhrē.

and today, when the peoples have turned back from the error of idols,

b-nāt ḥāwā b-qeṣmē ḥadtē: hpakh la-ʿyādē d-ḥanpūtā.

the daughters of Eve, with new divinations, have returned to the customs of paganism.

aydā d-ʿaqrā men yaldā: āw da-rdhīpā men gavrā.

Whoever is barren from birth, or driven away by her husband,

lā methpanyā la-ṣlōthā: w-shālā raḥmāwhī d-alāhā.

does not turn to prayer, nor ask the mercies of God.

elā mʿaqvā d-aykā ʾīth: ʿūmrā d-shāqlaī pethgāmē.

But it searches out where there is a dwelling for those who take up oracles,

w-men qāṣōmē zēpānē: ylpā rāzē d-kasyāthā.

and from lying diviners it learns the mysteries of hidden things.

ʾw l-shūqrā galyā da-ʿbadh: ākēlqarṣā ba-b-rīthā.

Oh, for the manifest lie that the slanderer wrought in creation,

da-b-neshē w-nāshā ṭanpē: kthābē d-rūḥā ethḥabalw.

that through unclean women and men the writings of the spirit were corrupted!

manū b-khlhōn qadhmāyē: da-shel qeṣmā ba-khthābē.

Who, among all the ancients, asked for divination by writings,

d-nesav lan ṭūpsā menēh: l-hānā ʿvādā da-ḥṭīthā.

that we should take from him a pattern for this deed of sin?

l-bēyth qūdhshā ʿelat ḥanā: d-tamān kāhnē wa-khthābē.

To the house of holiness went up Hannah, where there were priests and scriptures,

w-lā shelat men nāmōsā: pethghāmā ʿal ʿaqrūtāh.

and she did not ask of the Law an answer concerning her barrenness.

ba-ṣlōtā hāw qāmat ba-l-ḥōdh: qdhām bārōyā da-khyānā.

In prayer alone did she stand, before the Creator of nature,

wa-b-ḥashā d-napshāh nesbat: pērā ṭāvā d-men karsāh.

and by the anguish of her soul she received the good fruit of her womb.

men ʿūrlūtā w-ʿaqrūthā: ʿerqat ḥanā l-bēyth qūdshā.

From uncircumcision and barrenness Hannah fled to the house of holiness,

wa-b-demʿē d-resat tamān: shmūyl sheqlat men tamān.

and with the tears she shed there she took Samuel from there.

ʿarthāh hwāth lāh maḥshūlā: wa-b-ghāw pṣāḥā argezthāh.

Her rival made trouble for her, and amid the feast provoked her,

w-ba-l-mēnā d-mashkanzavnā: ḥanā ʿqarthā ethgāwsat.

and at the haven of the Tent of Meeting Hannah the barren took refuge,

w-tamn sedhrat bāʿūtāh: wa-b-lebā kasyā emrat.

and there she poured out her petition, and in a hidden heart she said:

ptaḥ lī mārī marbaʿī d-asīr: men pūqdānā ḥarīmā.

"Open for me, my Lord, my womb, which is bound by a stern decree;

« Ouvre-moi, mon Seigneur, mon sein qui est lié par un décret sévère ;

a(n)t hāw samā d-ʿaqrāthā: w-b-w-yāā d-yalādātē.

you are the medicine of barren women, and the comfort of those in childbirth,

wa-l-bar menākh ʿāvōdā: klhōn pūrsē kadāvīn.

and apart from you, maker, all devices are false.

lākh ṣalyat sarā ʿqarthā: w-nesbat menākh l-īḥīdāh.

To you prayed Sarah the barren, and received from you her only son;

Vers toi pria Sara la stérile, et elle reçut de toi son fils unique ;

āp rapqā kalthāh menākh: qablat l-yaʿqōv wa-l-ʿēsō.

Rebecca too, her daughter-in-law, received from you Jacob and Esau."
