ʿṣe nā hāw sagī d-ēmalel: d-qūshtā da-b-ranī ba-qṭīrā.

Greatly am I compelled to speak, for truth has driven me by force,

wa-b-neghdā kasyā shaḥqanī: d-ehwe snēghrā l-kēnūtēh.

and with a hidden goad it has worn me down, that I should be an advocate for its justice.

wa-b-ʿēyth d-ahme ʿal neghdēh: w-apne l-shethqā kēnūtēh.

And I wished to disregard its goad, and turn its justice to silence,

wa-ʿṣānī qūshtā w-aqīmanī: d-ʿam nāshā ḥlāpāwhī edrōsh.

but truth compelled me and set me up, to contend with mankind in its behalf.

d-aḥṣp w-ershe kul teghmīn: ethpaqdeth men hāw da-ʿṣānī.

That I should be bold and dare against every rank, I was commanded by him who compelled me,

wa-mṭayav nā d-ethkane: marāḥā men ḥeryāyē.

and I am prepared to be called insolent by the contentious.

ydaʿ nā hāw d-aykh ḥadthāthā: meshtamʿān sharīrāthā.

I know this: that, as though they were new, true things are heard.

ʿethqat lāh d-gālūtā: w-sateth ʿāūlā w-ethga(n)bar.

Frankness has grown old, and iniquity has become entrenched and grown strong;

La franchise a vieilli, et l'iniquité s'est enracinée et fortifiée ;

shīṭā meltēh da-shrārā: wa-mḥīl qālā d-kēnūtā.

Despised is the word of truth, and weak the voice of justice,

w-aykh bekhyā bēyth meshtūtā: mshakar aynā da-mkhāwen.

and like weeping in a house of feasting, whoever rebukes is spurned.

sʿā zēpā wa-l-bakh nōmē: b-rāshōyē aykh da-b-ṭūrē.

Falsehood roams and snares the slumbering, among rulers as though among the mountains,

w-saḥīpēh qūshtā b-ghāw ʿūmqā: d-mā d-amraḥī. w-aks raghmēh.

but truth casts it into the depth when it grows insolent, and rebukes it with stoning.

lā gēyr qānṭīn ganābē: men b-īrāthā d-da-yānē.

For thieves do not fear the pits of the judges,

akhmā d-qānṭīn sharīrē: men syʿāthā d-rēshānē.

as the honest fear the factions of the rulers.

ʾīth lēh ʿedhrā l-ganāvā: m d-pālēsh bēyth da-yānē.

The thief has help when he pleads his case in the house of judges,

w-sharīrā lā meshkaḥ lēh: ʿādhōrā ṣēydh rēshānē.

and the honest man finds no helper among the rulers.

kāhnē l-kespā ethkapanīw: wa-l-māmōnā rēshānē.

Priests have hungered for silver, and rulers for mammon,

w-aykh mēkhūltā mettavʿā: yaʿnūtā b-galyūth apē.

and like food, extortion is exacted openly, with brazen face.

l-ḥānwāyē da-ḥlaṭīw may: b-gāw ḥamrā ʿdal eshaʿyā.

Isaiah rebuked the merchants who mixed water into the wine —

wa-l-khāhnē manū makes: d-ḥālṭīn zepā ba-shrārā.

but the priests, who mix falsehood into truth — who rebukes them?

ḥānwāyē men bēyth qūdshā: raḥīqīn ba-d-ʿāwālīn.

Merchants are kept far from the sanctuary, since they deal wrongly,

w-khāhnē b-athrā d-ḥūsāyā: mettagrīn yūthrānayhōn.

but priests, in the place of atonement, traffic for their own gain.

bēyth qūdhshā ʿvīdh ḥānūthā: w-sīm tābaōʿā ʿal tarʿēh.

The house of holiness has been made a shop, and a debt-collector set at its door;

La maison de la sainteté a été faite boutique, et un percepteur est placé à sa porte ;

w-aynā d-zābn kāhnūtā: w-ʿal wa-shqal wa-npaq w-ya(h)v.

and whoever buys the priesthood goes in and takes, comes out and pays.

rām hāw qālēh d-tāvōʿā: d-shāqal ṭīmaī ṭaybūtā.

Loud is the voice of the collector who exacts the price of grace,

men qālēh d-hāw tagārā: d-tābaʿ ṭīmaī sīmātēh.

louder than the voice of the merchant who demands the price of his wares.

l-kespā b-ʾīdā bāḥar lēh: wa-l-da-hvā b-gāw masatā.

He tests the silver by hand, and the gold in the balance,

w-māwhavthā d-lā mettaqlā: b-mathqālā taḥemw yahbūh.

and the gift that should not be weighed, they have decreed shall be given by weight!

aykat kēnā bar āmōṣ: d-ʿal ḥamrā b-ṣhyōn rāshēyt.

Where are you, righteous son of Amoz, who rebuked over the wine in Zion?

tā wa-ḥzī ba-ynāth ʿammē: d-kespā b-rūḥā methmazagh.

Come and see, among the peoples, how silver is mixed with wind.

aydā sanyā ṭūvānā: b-ʿaynaī qūshtā da-l-b-īsh a(n)t.

Which is more hateful, O blessed one, in the eyes of truth, than the thing you have put on?

mayā da-npalīw ʿal ḥamrā: āw kespā ʿal kāhnūtā.

The water that fell into the wine, or the silver into the priesthood?

zānīthā ḥashībāh l-ṣhyōn: ēshaʿyā kad makes lāh.

Isaiah, rebuking Zion, reckoned her a harlot,

w-qaṭregh ʿamā da-b-ghwāh: l-ʿatīrē wa-l-meskēnē.

and accused the people within her, the rich and the poor.

d-rēshānē hww shāwtāpē: d-ganābē w-shāṭīw nāmōsē.

For the rulers were partners of thieves, and despised the laws,

zānīthā hdīrath apē: l-ʿatīrē hāw yāhbā napshāh.

The harlot, adorned of face, gives herself to the rich,

w-ʿēdtā d-b-īrā ba-qṭīrā: d-la-ndhīdē b-sheghmā tehwe.

but the Church, led by force, must give herself for hire to the vile.

ʾīth ḥērē d-maslēyn da-hvā: w-qenyānē da-shmā b-īshā.

There are free men who despise gold, and possessions of evil name,

wa-b-nāthā d-āwledhw yāhbīn: l-meskēnē da-shmā ṭāvā.

and give the daughters they bore to the poor of good name —

ʾō l-avāhē rūḥānē: d-ʾītayhōn yāldaī ʿēdtā.

O spiritual fathers, who are the very children of the Church —

da-l-mārath malkē b-kespā: zabnūh l-ʿābdaī b-īshāthā.

they have sold the mistress of kings for silver to workers of evil deeds!

tāmah nā dēyn ba-ḥrēthā: wa-d-lā ʾmar qānēṭ nā.

But I am amazed at another thing, and I fear to say it:

d-āp da-yrāthā l-ʿēdāthā: etdamī b-shūḥlāpayhēyn.

that even the monasteries have grown like the churches in their corruption.

w-aykā nābaʿ b-w-yāā: l-ḥashā d-qūrbā wa-d-rūḥqā.

And whence shall comfort spring, for the pain both near and far?

ʿal rēshānē yaʿnūtā: w-ʿal da-yrāyē rāmūtā.

Upon the rulers, oppression; and upon the monks, pride!

afṭarw ʿūmrē la-ḥdhādē: ba-qlāyāthā d-eskēmē.

Monasteries have parted from one another in the disgrace of their orders;

Les monastères se sont séparés les uns des autres dans la honte de leurs ordres ;

ḥad sālēq wa-ḥrēyn nāḥēth: ḥadh yārēv wa-ḥrēyn zāʿar.

one rises and another falls, one grows great and another dwindles.

da-plīghīn reʿyānayhōn: ethpalaghw zāyōnayhōn.

Because their minds are divided, their provisions too are divided.

la-shmā hāw rāhēṭ yāhōvā: d-la-shmā hāw ʿāmal nāsōvā.

For fame the giver runs, for fame the receiver toils —

ʾīth da-ṣhe kad zadīqā hāw: w-ʾīth da-rwe kad ʿāywālā hāw.

there is one who thirsts though he is righteous, and one who is sated though he is wicked.

b-sheghmā hāw rādhyā māwhavtā: w-ba-pē ḥāyrā ṭaybūtā.

By hire the gift is dispensed, and grace shows favor to faces.

d-masga mqabel zedaqāthā: ḥashbāh l-napshēh zadīqā.

He who receives much in alms reckons himself righteous,

wa-d-ḥasīr lēh māzōnā: b-ʿaynaī saklē ḥaṭāyā hāw.

but he who lacks sustenance is, in the eyes of fools, a sinner.

wa-khmā zavnīn mashpel lēh: meskanā āp kad zadīq.

And how many times is the poor man brought low, even while righteous,

w-metṭalmā lāh tāwdītā: men meskanā w-ʿatīrā.

and his due praise is denied him, whether poor or rich?

sleq reṭnā men ḥasīrē: sleq ḥūthrā men ʿatīrē.

Complaint rises up from the needy; the rod rises up from the rich.

w-bēyth ḥasīrā l-ʿatīrā: ṭʿā tūlmādan shūwdāyēh.

and between the poor man and the rich, our teaching has forgotten its promise.

rḥemw rēshānē b-da-yrāthā: syʿāthā d-aḥē ṭarqē.

Rulers in the monasteries have loved factions of brothers at odds,

w-aykh athlēyṭ d-methgabēyn: l-āghōnā gvāw talmīdē.

and like athletes chosen for the contest, they have chosen disciples,

da-mshūḥthā āp da-ḥzātā: wa-d-ḥaylā āp d-eskamā.

for stature and for looks, for strength and for bearing —

w-aykh tarʿīthā d-ḥazāyē: nḥetīw l-āghōnā d-qūlāsē.

and, like spectators judging, they have gone down into a contest of flattery.

l-ʿaghrūtā qarāw kēnūthā: wa-l-pakā shamahīw qūshtā.

They have called righteousness hired labor, and named truth a snare.

l-naṣāyē wa-l-harārē: b-khāhnūtā yaqarw enōn.

the contentious and the quarrelsome — these they have honored with the priesthood,

w-la-ʾynā d-maḥṣp kad shāl: parshīūhī ʿavdūhī sāʿōrā.

and whoever is bold enough to ask, him they set apart and make a steward,

wa-d-masge yāmē wa-mpīs: ethkanī lēh d-pūrshānā.

and whoever swears much and pleads is named 'the man of discernment.'

l-qūyāmā gēyr da-khyānā: eṣṭanaʿ mārē kyānē.

For the continuance of nature, the Lord of natures ordained,

d-asneq gavrā ʿal a(n)tthā: w-a(n)tthā apanī ʿal gavrā.

that man should need woman, and woman turn back to man.

b-hān asārā da-khyānā: mqāwēyn ʿamm b-āwyūtā.

In this bond of nature, peoples abide in harmony,

w-methḥalṭān āp sharvāthā: b-yadh masvā w-matlā d-neshē.

and families too are intermingled, through the taking and giving of wives.

tā ḥzī hākēyl shūḥāṭā: d-āwʿī b-īshā b-yāwmātan.

Come, see then the corruption that the evil one has made abound in our days,

d-ba-shmā rabā da-qyāmā: npalīw ṭūkāsāwhī da-khyānā.

that under the great name of the covenant, the ordinances of nature have fallen.

w-yatīr qalīl ethḥabal: taqnāthā ba-b-nāth ḥāwā.

and all the more has propriety been corrupted among the daughters of Eve.

da-l-besh ṭūpsā da-qyāmā: w-kadanāh l-napshā ba-ḥṭīthā.

For she put on the form of the covenant, and yoked the soul to sin.

b-thūlā (h)wā kyānā d-napshā: d-ya(h)v alāhā l-bēyth ādām.

Virgin was the nature of the soul that God gave to the house of Adam,

wa-ʿdakēyl ba-ghnōn shūvḥā: b-athrā da-ʿden mdayar (h)wā.

and still, in the bridal chamber of glory, it dwelt in the place of Eden.

ḥāwā dēyn aykh zānīthā: gārat l-w-qdam ba-ḥṭīthā.

But Eve, like a harlot, first consorted with sin,

w-ṣayātēh l-shūvḥā d-napshā: d-aʿbartēh ʿal pūqdānā.

and sullied the glory of the soul, when she led it past the commandment.

ʾō l-zānīthā da-b-ḥewyā: qablat zarʿēh da-nkhīlā.

O harlot, who through the serpent received the seed of the deceiver,

wa-b-kesyā beṭnat ʿāūlā: w-yeldat māwtā wa-ḥṭīthā.

and in secret conceived iniquity, and bore death and sin.

b-rāmūtā belʿat ḥāwā: b-shūwdāyēh d-ākēlqarṣā.

In her pride Eve was swallowed up, by the promise of the slanderer,

w-sevrat lāh d-b-ʾūkhlēh d-pērā: sālqā l-rāwmā da-shmayā.

and she supposed that by eating the fruit, she would rise to the height of heaven.

āp hāshā b-ḥūthrā b-īshā: b-nāthāh d-ḥāwā ethmaḥī.

Even now, with an evil rod, the daughters of Eve have been smitten,

zel shāmōʿā d-pūrshānā: la-mdynāthā wa-l-karkē.

Go, hearer of discernment, to the cities and the towns,

wa-b-qūryā wa-b-māḥōz: b-qī shrārā d-hālēyn d-emrēth.

and in the villages and the districts, seek out the truth of what I have said.

wa-ḥzī tamn syʿāthā: d-neshē da-prash men gavrē.

and see there the companies of women who are set apart from men,

d-ba-shmā nzīrān la-mshīḥā: w-paḥā ʿvīdhān la-ḥṭīthā.

who by name are dedicated to Christ, but have been made a snare for sin.

b-gāwnā gēyr da-l-b-w-shayhēyn: nbaʿ nīshā l-qadīshūtā.

For in the color of their garb, a mark of holiness has sprung forth,

wa-b-ṣbtē d-zūlāpayhēyn: sām shedhlā la-srīḥūtā.

but in the ornaments of their finery, it has laid a lure for wantonness.

ʾīth kūḥādā l-zānīthā: w-nakhpūtā la-mganavtā.

There is concealment for the harlot, and a modest guise for the thief,

w-neshē da-l-besh ʾūkām: b-ʿēdtā ītīr ezdalal.

and women who wear black have become all the more despised in the Church.

ʾw l-maḥshūlāwhī da-nkhīlā: d-ba-l-mnā ʿalīw w-etṭashīw.

O the snares of the deceiver! They have entered the harbor and hidden themselves,

w-aykā da-sbar tayāvā: d-etdalī tamān ṭbaʿ.

and where the penitent thought to be lifted up, there he has drowned.

m gēyr d-ethā w-estatar: ḥaṭāyā b-gāw bēyth qūdshā.

For when the sinner has come and taken shelter within the sanctuary,

eshkaḥ lēh paḥā qdāmwhī: w-la-b-kēh b-nīrā d-avdānā.

he has found a snare set before him, and it has gripped him in the yoke of destruction.

yaldāwhī d-ādām tāw neʿrōq: men ḥāwā ḥavrath b-īshā.

Children of Adam, come, let us flee from Eve, companion of the evil one,

Enfants d'Adam, venez, fuyons Ève, compagne du malin,

b-rāshīth ba-ʿdhen aʿweltan: w-hāshā b-ʿēdtā ḥabeltan.

In the beginning, in Eden, she wronged us, and now, in the Church, she has corrupted us.

d-ke (h)wā ʿūmrēh d-pardaysā: men ʿāūlā ba-d-mūth ʿēdtā.

Pure was the dwelling of Paradise, free from iniquity, in the likeness of the Church,

w-ʿamāh d-ḥāwā ʿelat lēh: ḥṭīthā b-ʿeqvāh ʿelat lāh.

and with Eve, sin entered it; and on her track, it entered her too.

ba-ʿden shūvḥā l-b-īshā (h)wāth: w-lādām ḥeprat gūmṣā.

In Eden she had been clothed with glory, and for Adam she dug a pit,

wa-b-ʿēdtā ḥashā levshat: w-(h)ī men d-īlāh lā pāshat.

and in the Church she has put on suffering, but she herself has not ceased from her own ways.

hā b-shūvḥāh w-hā ba-l-b-w-shāh: l-māwtā ṣāydā shāṭītā.

Behold, by her glory, and behold, by her garment, the foolish woman hunts for death,

w-men ṭalyūtāh l-saybūtāh: b-ʿaynā b-īshtā ḥārat ban.

and from her youth to her old age, with an evil eye she has looked upon us.

l-ādām avūh qadhmyā: pērā yehbat wa-qṭaltēh.

To Adam, her first father, she gave the fruit and killed him,

w-yāwmānā l-aynā d-shamʿāh: paghrāh yehbat wa-qṭaltēh.

and today, to whoever listens to her, she gives her body and kills him.

paqāḥ (h)wā pērā d-yehvt: men paghrā d-yehbat yāwmān.

Better was the fruit she gave then, than the body she gives today,

d-mwtā kse bēh wa-l-ʿālam: mran paṣā lan menēh.

for death was hidden in it, but forever our Lord has delivered us from it.

akārā ʿevdat l-ādām: b-pērā d-qeṭpat yehbat lēh.

She made Adam a tiller of the soil, by the fruit she plucked and gave him,

w-qāṭōlā ʿbadtēh l-aynā: d-yehbat lēh neqpā d-paghrāh.

and she made a murderer of him to whom she gave the embrace of her body.

qablat gēyr ʿal hadāmēyh: zarʿā d-māwʿe ba-rnāshā.

For upon her limbs she received the seed that brings a man to birth,

wa-ṭlamtēh b-ʾūmānūtāh: w-arshaʿtēh l-aynā d-zarʿēh.

and by her craft she wronged him, and made a sinner of him whose seed it was.

sāpaq lan ʿdamā l-hārkā: shāmōʿā b-ṣī w-estakal.

Enough for us up to this point; hearer, search and understand.

kse rāzā men ba-rāyē: ba-ytāyē tāw ettanaḥw.

The mystery is hidden from outsiders; but you of the household, come, and groan.

hāshā da-rheṭ leshānā: b-da-rgē tlāthā rēshāyē.

Now let the tongue run, in three principal stages,

wa-prash menhōn sūlānā: b-pethghām d-pāsyqātā.

and let it mark out censure among them, in terse and pointed words.

apīsākh ʾō shāmōʿā: d-lā (h)wā d-estōr ṣābē nā.

I entreat you, O hearer, it is not to tear down that I wish,
