w-ba-qrīth avūhī kasyā ba-khshōr plaḥ (h)wā w-yaṣīp.

and in the calling of his hidden Father he served with skill and care.

lā ʿbed w-aghīr ḥshav la-qnōmēh b-ram ba-b-rū l-īp:

He did not count himself a servant or hireling, but learned to be a son,

w-ba-ʾvādī d-yārt b-ḥūbā d-mārēh ettlīp.

and in giving up the inheritance he was wrapped in the love of his Lord.

b-hedārā w-zīwā d-ʿal apāwhī zlīḥ w-nūhr d-ʿaṭīp:

In the glory and radiance poured over his face, wrapped in light,

kul ātwāth wa-ghbarwāth ashpaʿ w-aṭīp.

he poured out and made flow all signs and mighty works.

d-rāʿā rāmā d-ga(n)bārūtēh arīm w-anīp:

The high arm of his strength he raised and lifted up,

w-asī krīhē wa-msharayā wa-l-kul da-khpīp.

and he healed the sick and the paralysed, and all who were bent.

ḥazāy (h)wā wa-mdīq b-kasyān w-sagī ḥarīp:

He was a seer, and searched out hidden things, and was very sharp,

la-mṣādū lam w-āp la-mdāqū b-khlmn da-sḥyēp.

to track down, and also to search out, everything that is hidden.

ba-ṣlāwātēh athlēysāīth spaq (h)wā da-nsīp:

In his prayers, like an athlete, he was fit to cut down,

l-kul da-ṣle (h)wā ṣvyānīth l-da-ywē w-naqīp.

and for all who prayed he willingly smote the demons.

sānā menqdīm b-māmōl ṭūʿyaī l-klnāsh aṭīp:

The enemy from of old, by the talk of his deceits, flooded everyone,

w-aʿṭep l-nāshā men bārōyhōn l-seghdath kul glīp.

and turned men aside from their Creator to the worship of every carved image.

men yōm sārōgh shrār b-ṭūʿyaī ḥalep ṭanīp:

From the days of Serug he exchanged the truth for error, the foul one,

wa-vamaī zēpēh bātar ṣlmāwhī l-khlnāsh asīp.

and by the waters of his deceit, after his images, he destroyed everyone.

Gate of Ṣade

Porte de Ṣade

shrār menqdīm lā eshtbeq (h)wā shēd da-nḥaleṣ:

From of old the truth was not given up to the demon, that he should plunder it,

b-b-w-l-bāl leʿzē b-seghdath ṣalmē kdan (h)wā w-ḥaīṣ.

at the confusion of tongues, in the worship of images, when he pressed on.

men hān zavnā takhtūsh shēdē d-ālēṣ ethqṣeṣ:

From that time the warfare of the demons that oppressed was cut short,

w-kad shwaḥw ṣalmē men rmezmāry estlīw w-ethgaʿeṣw.

and when the idols were brought low by the psalm, they were cast down and spurned.

b-nīsān ba-ʿden npal men shūvḥēh w-aylel w-ṣāweṣ:

In Nisan, at its season, he fell from his glory, and wailed and shrieked,

w-ba-zban nemrōd gērwhī b-ṭūhman traṣ mḥā w-adbaṣ.

and in Nimrod's time he aimed his arrows at our race, struck, and hit.

b-yāwmaī hāgār ʿīr d-nūr eth(ḥ)zī w-ethbleṣ:

In the days of Hagar a fiery watcher appeared and shone forth,

w-bēh b-hāw zavnā shūlṭān shēdē sharī ālēṣ.

and in that same time the rule of the demons began to press.

men payūthōn b-shūrāī ʿālem māryā napeṣ:

Because of their arrogance, at the beginning of the world, the Lord shook them off,

w-rūghzēh d-ḥīlā marīrāīth ʿlayhōn ḥayeṣ.

and his terrible wrath he bitterly pressed upon them.

men zban ʾdam ʿlayhōn sakhlū paghrep w-aqeṣ:

From the time of Adam they had played the fool against them, and he scattered and cut them off,

w-saḥep l-shūv(ḥ)hōn w-ethqaṭmw l-hōn w-rēshhōn raṣeṣ.

and swept away their glory, and they were burnt to ashes, and he crushed their head.

aylel gensan men qdām gērwhī d-sānā d-dāʿēṣ:

Our race wailed before the arrows of the enemy who tramples,

w-kad b-khā wa-ʿwaṣ mārn saḥpēh w-ṭāv ethleṣ.

and when it wept and cried out, our Lord overthrew him, and he was sorely pressed.

l-tarʿē da-shyōl hāw ba-zqīpēh tbar (h)wā w-ḥaleṣ:

The gates of Sheol he broke by his cross, and delivered,

w-asī l-kēbyn w-shūlṭān shēdē shavā w-ethrṣṣ.

and healed the sick, and took captive the authority of the demons and crushed it.

l-kul d-men ḥashē w-āp men shēdē kēyth etheleṣ:

For everyone who was truly oppressed by passions and also by demons,

nāḥ b-yad ʿavdāwhī w-hāw ḥūlmān l-mārhōn aqeṣw.

he gave rest through his servants, and that healing they gave back to their Lord.

knūshyēh d-avūn b-hānā ḥaylā ṭāv ettaraṣ:

The gatherings of our father in this strength were well set in order,

w-ba-myatrth w-ʿamlē shḥīqē sharī l-meḥbṣ.

and in privations and wearing labours he began to afflict himself.

b-ʿānwāyūth w-shahr ʿīrā ṭāv ethḥayaṣ:

In humility and vigil, watchful, it was well girded,

w-men ʿghīmūtā d-shērē kthīshē yṣep l-meghʿaṣ.

and from the slackness of weary limbs it strove to rouse itself.

kenshēh d-avūn b-d-w-rkāth d-īlēh halek kad dāṣ:

The gathering of our father walked in his own paths, treading down,

w-lezath da-ywē w-yashaī kḥān aykh pūrpār qaṣ.

and cut down the strength of the demons and their snares like brushwood.

thharw āsūmṭē b-ḥashē l-zīzē d-ʿal avūn ʿraṣw:

The bodiless ones were amazed at the passions, at the swarms that rushed against our father,

w-b-īqōr da-ywē lā ethbagḥ wa-l-merhaṭ ḥbaṣ.

and by the weight of the demons he was not cast down, and he was eager to run.
