tarʿā d-yōd

Gate of Yodh

Porte de Yodh

ḥānūth lelē bezqīn hpīkath ʿlayh eshtamlī:

Bezqin, the den of night, was overthrown; it was fulfilled upon it,

esṭūkes avūn w-nekhlāh l-ʿēyn kul ṭāv ethparsī.

what our father foretold, and its cunning was laid bare before every eye.

ʿāwlhōn b-rēshhōn d-qerḥā hpak ba-d-mūth mānī:

Their wrong turned back on the heads of the bald ones, as on Mani,

w-ʿal bēʿāthwn sleq rūshʿhōn w-ethḥdī w-ethkshī.

and their wickedness rose over their brood, and rejoiced, and grew hard.

naynwē d-tartēyn yāē qrāyāh b-arkōlōghī:

Nineveh of the two Jonahs, it was called in the ancient record,

w-aykh sdhōm ḥāthh pe shūmāhāh b-khlāh l-w-ghī.

and like Sodom its shame was its name in every account.

b-zen ʿāmōr qadyt ḥūvlāh b-yad sūnākhī:

Like Gomorrah its ruin was brought about by the hand of Sennacherib(?),

w-aykh ādāmā w-ṣāʿār w-sharkā hwāth b-sōzōghī.

and like Admah and Zoar and the rest, it was yoked with them.

la-d-vh eshtkaḥ men da-ḥdhārēyh qūryā eshtvī:

Its end was found; the villages around it were taken captive;

Sa fin fut trouvée ; les villages autour d’elle furent emmenés captifs ;

bātar d-yathbēyh l-ḥez bālaʿth rūghzā taḥtī.

after its people, the wrath that swallowed brought it down.

ʾīṭā b-naī ʿmōr ʾīth alhā knesh d-ethʿanwī:

Then the monks, the band that had been humbled, knew there is a God,

men d-nethḥabr l-avūn zahyā lā sāk ahmī.

and whoever joined our glorious father never ceased to meditate.

ḥamshīn menhōn gavrē mshabḥē shīdē sagī:

Fifty men of them, worthy of praise and well attested,

henōn b-qadmā hww lēh l-ʿūmr kēyth ewpōthī.

were the first for the monastery, in good order.

ʾīṭā etṭbev ṭeb b-athr d-ʿūmr ethbnī:

Then the fame of goodness spread, in the place where the monastery was built,

w-khlnāsh l-pūtēh men qenyānēh ya(h)v (h)wā w-amṭī.

and everyone gave to him from his possessions, and brought it.

shbaʿ kakrīn ksep ya(h)vlēh l-avūn w-hākan āwdī.

gave seven talents of silver to our father, and spoke thus:

d-mā d-hālēyn ghmar l-pūthheyn etal w-vānālōghī:

that when these were spent he would add to them in proportion;

que, lorsque ceux-ci seraient dépensés, il y ajouterait en proportion ;
