ba-d-mūth mārēh shbaq sakhlūthhōn kad hāw lā d-l-īḥ:

Like his Lord, he forgave their folly, without fear,

wa-l-ghāw mʿartēh aʿel enōn b-ḥūbā da-ḥwīḥ.

and brought them into his cave, in the love he showed.

ʿnā w-ʾmr l-hōn l-ʿūrlaī leb w-hāw rwīz wa-pṣīḥ:

He answered and said to them, "O uncircumcised in heart," gentle and glad,

sīmw ḥūṭrykōn w-sakīnīykōn w-ʿōlw l-ghw w-ettnīḥw:

Lay down your clubs and your knives, and come in and rest,

w-ashīṭ b-ʾīdāwhī l-reghlaī ṭam ʿam pḥez wa-shrīḥ.

and with my hands I will reach to your unclean feet, wanton and lewd as you are.

āwkel w-ashqī la-khnesh paṭʿē d-men ṭāvthā shlīḥ:

I will feed and give drink to a band of fools stripped of goodness,

shīrā l-hōn l-mēzal l-wāth ḥavryhōn knesh b-zīḥ w-paḥīḥ:

He let them go to their companions, a despised and worthless band,

kmā dēyn d-avūn ḥlāp ṭāʿyūthhōn qnōmēh ʿbad d-b-īḥ:

But the more our father made himself a sacrifice for their error,

henōn yatīr l-ṭashū nībayhōn l-methbr naṣīḥ.

the more they whetted their fangs to break the victorious one.

kad b-kul pūrsyn ḥzāw d-lā mahnīn b-da-b-ṭābn shbīḥ:

When they saw that in every way they could not overcome the one praised for his good deeds,

w-yataīrāīth ʿāēp ʿlayhōn ʿāwlā w-ettaghyḥīḥ.

wrong pressed on them still more, and swelled up.

mekyēl ʾūrḥēh l-bakhw d-qewrelē shayūḥ wa-shrīḥ:

From then they took the road to the shrine of the Qewrele, astray and loose,

ʿam aḥūsē qdām rēsh prakāhōn apāwhī qarqeṭ:

With the brethren, before the head of their shrine, he bowed his face,

wa-mraḥrḥe ba-ghʿāth shedē pūmhōn ethpreṭ.

and in a frenzy, with the bellowing of demons, their mouths opened wide.

d-naḥṣfwn apē b-shēlān qdāmāwhī w-ḥapeṭ wa-l-beṭ.

so that they boldly put questions to him, and he seized them and clung to them.

kespā lā zʿōr w-qarev l-l-w-qvē w-la-b-rēh āwsheṭ.

silver, not a little, he brought to ʿUqbe and his son, and held it out.

aykh d-ethḥakm men maṭʿyaī w-menēh ethlheṭ.

as he had been taught by the deceiver and inflamed by him,

hāydēyn avūn qām ba-ṣlōtēh b-ḥūbā da-ḥlīṭ:

Then our father stood up in prayer, in heartfelt love,

wa-ḥlāp ʿēdt w-bezqīnāyē ṣalī kad ḥpīṭ.

and for the church and the people of Bezqin he prayed earnestly.

ʿam ḥūtāmāh ḥzā ʿal gabah ʿīr da-l-hīṭ:

At its end he saw beside him a watcher, blazing,

w-marā b-ʾīdēh d-la-ḥrōv bezqīn ʿthīd (h)wā wa-l-b-īṭ.

with a spade in his hand, ready to destroy Bezqin, and he gripped it.

l-mānā mṣalyet ʿavdā ṭāvā emar la-mlīṭ:

"Why do you pray, good servant?" he said to the holy man;

« Pourquoi pries-tu, bon serviteur ? » dit-il au saint ;

l-b-ōkh hān mar d-bēhū pqīd n d-eʿqrīh wa-nmīṭ.

"Take this spade, with which I am ordered to uproot it and lay it low."

mḥāh dēyn ʿīr wa-l-yatābēyh badar w-asīṭ:

Then the watcher struck it, and scattered its people, and laid it waste,

wa-mḥāh mendresh wa-l-shathsēyh arʿel w-amīṭ.

and struck it again, and shook its foundations and threw them down.

aynā da-ʿraq b-reʿl qadmā lā hwā lēh mrīṭ:

Whoever fled at the first tremor came to no harm,

Quiconque s’enfuit à la première secousse n’eut aucun mal,

wa-npaq menāh d-ḥānūth msaybē qdhām d-(h)ī tetmīṭ.

and went out of it, the den of the vile, before it was laid low.

klmn d-amraḥ ʿal qāl ʿīr w-aḥṣp w-apīṭ:

Everyone who grew insolent at the watcher's voice, and was shameless and defiant,

pāsh tḥēyth kēpē w-mīth lēh b-māwt glīṣā wa-sʿīṭ.

stayed beneath the stones, and died a cruel death, and was crushed.

b-qadmā ʿūqbē shmaʿ qāl ʿīr men kul d-ettsīṭ:

ʿUqbe was the first, of all who had been drawn in, to hear the watcher's voice,

wa-b-zāweʿth npaq men tamn w-da-ḥīl w-qanīṭ.

and in the quaking he went out from there, afraid and shuddering.

ṭāv eṣṭamʿar menēh d-avūn ba-d-lēh ashīṭ:

He was much distressed that he had scorned our father,

Il fut fort affligé d’avoir méprisé notre père,

w-ethʿavdad lēh l-shūlhāv b-naī ḥṭā w-ba-qrāvhōn sīṭ.

and had become a firebrand for the sons of sin, and been drawn into their battle.

kad ḥzā ḥūrbāh d-ḥānūth msaybē w-hāw ethplaṭlaṭ:

When he saw the ruin of the den of the vile, he trembled,

l-bēyt gavrīl alqōshāy sṭā w-ethblaṭlaṭ.

and turned aside to the house of Gabriel of Alqosh, and sheltered there.

āwdī d-askel w-etdnī l-maʿbdē w-āp ethḥlaṭlaṭ:

He confessed that he had acted foolishly, and been drawn into their doings, and entangled,

wa-b-ṣevyānēh shūlhāv msaybē ʿlāwhī eshtlaṭlaṭ.

and that, by his own will, the incitement of the vile had ruled over him.
