tarʿā d-ḥēyth

Gate of Ḥeth

Porte de Ḥeth

hāydēyn grīʿā rēsh maḥrmē sʿā (h)wā w-amraḥ:

Then the shaven one, head of the accursed, raged and grew insolent,

wa-l-shalīṭā zēpānāīth melthā askaḥ.

and boldly found a word to say to the ruler.

da-b-da-yrn shkhīḥ kul zen d-methbʿe la-ʿmād b-shūrtāḥ:

that in our monastery all that baptism needs is found, from its start,

w-d-īlan w-d-īlēh ʿmādā ḥad hāw w-makhshar w-maṣlaḥ.

and ours and his are one baptism, and it is valid and effective.

avūn kad ḥzāyhī l-harāṭīqā d-mebaḥ nābaḥ:

Our father, when he saw the heretic barking on and on,

rebuked him in anger, standing firm against the wretch who raved.

ʾw rashīʿā lā hākanā ba-ḥṣōp tamraḥ:

O wicked one, do not be so insolent in your impudence,

d-lā shwe hāw ʿmādan w-d-īlkhōn akh(ḥ)d w-lā methḥāwaḥ.

for our baptism and yours are not equal, and cannot be made one.

aykh d-sāṭān ʿam alhā lā meshtabḥ:

As Satan is not praised together with God,

w-lā ḥeshōkā ʿam nahīrā mṣ meṣṭamaḥ.

and darkness cannot be joined with light,

hākan ʿmādkhōn ʿam hāw d-īlan lā mezdayaḥ:

so your baptism cannot be made equal with ours;

ainsi votre baptême ne peut être égalé au nôtre ;

w-en rāgā lākh b-gely nḥāwe w-ba-ʿvād naqraḥ.

and if you wish, we will show it openly, and make it plain by deed.

paqad l-gavryēl avūn zahyā w-l-īgh nghāl shlaḥ:

Our glorious father commanded Gabriel, and sent him in haste

d-nayta la-qnā wa-thrēyn ṭlāyē w-lā netdalaḥ.

to bring a reed and two boys, and not delay.

bar ḥerḥā ḥrēyn bar mhaymnē ʿmīdē d-lā pghḥ:

one a son of the heretics, the other a son of baptized believers, without delay;

l’un fils d’hérétiques, l’autre fils de croyants baptisés, sans délai ;

wa-ʿbad hākan w-qadash ʿmādā avūn mnaṣaḥ.

and he did so, and our father hallowed the baptism, victorious.

kad nsav w-aʿmed l-nesṭūryān dēthrāshem ba-mshaḥ:

When he took and baptized the Nestorian, who had been signed with the oil,

aykh da-b-zeqē ethʿaramw maī wa-ʿlāwhī lā zlaḥīw.

the waters heaped up as in skins, and did not flow over him.

bar ḥerḥā kad nḥeth l-ghwhōn ʿal rēshēh gāḥīw:

When the heretics' son went down into them, they rushed over his head,

wa-thharw kenshē wa-shelw da-l-hōn pūshāq nadnaḥ.

and the crowds were amazed, and asked that he explain it to them.

hāydēyn avūn ba-shrār meltēh ʿbad l-hōn pūtāḥ:

Then our father, in the truth of his word, opened it to them:

d-nesṭūryānē ʿmādhhōn mshamlaī b-rūḥā w-maṣmaḥ.

that the baptism of the Nestorians is made perfect by the Spirit, and shines;

que le baptême des nestoriens est rendu parfait par l’Esprit, et resplendit ;

d-yaʿqōbēyṭē ḥasīr qūdshā hāw w-men rūḥ mraḥraḥ:

that of the Jacobites lacks holiness, and is far from the Spirit;

que celui des jacobites manque de sainteté, et est loin de l’Esprit ;

w-kenshē kad ḥzāw tharw w-etdamarw w-haymenw w-shabḥw.

and the crowds, when they saw, were amazed, and wondered, and believed, and gave praise.

ʿmadw (h)wāw shāybīn w-ʿūqbē w-ḥavrwhī w-akhsharw w-aṣlaḥw:

The elders and ʿUqbe and his companions were baptized, and were set right and prospered,

wa-khnesh grīʿē npaq ba-hīthā w-ettmīq w-ethbzaḥ.

and the band of the shaven went out in shame, and was crushed and scorned.

alqōshāyē w-ʿūqbē w-ḥavrwhī hpakū (h)wāw w-ethpṣaḥw:

The men of Alqosh and ʿUqbe and his companions went back, and rejoiced,

w-ṭebēh d-avūn b-kul athrwān zāḥ (h)wā wa-praī.

and the fame of our father went out through all regions, and bore fruit.

kmā d-neṣḥānēh d-avūn l-kul d-ūkh pāraḥ mepraḥ:

How the victory of our father flew far to every place!

knesh qeryḥā methkabd (h)wā b-rūghzā w-maṣwaḥ.

The band of the bald was weighed down with rage, and cried out.

malk mshīḥā w-men malkhā nhe mezdayaḥ.

Christ the King dawns, and you will be counted equal with the angels.

Wrath was poured out on Satan and the heretics,

In rays of light, in the ranks of the righteous, you shine,

w-ʿam malk mettaṣmḥatā w-āp methnaṣaḥ.

and with the angels you are made to shine, and also triumph.

w-ba-d-mūth kāwkbē ba-b-ṣīr w-yatīr nhe meshtartḥ.

and like the stars, lesser and greater, you will be made to shine.

w-men gāw arʿā d-lā pghāḥ wa-b-ghaḥ sālēq w-shāwaḥ.

and from inside the earth, without delay and at once, he rises and comes forth;

et que du sein de la terre, sans délai et aussitôt, il se lève et sort ;

mā da-l-māryā klnāsh l-pūtēh mqales mzayaḥ:

when everyone sings praise toward the Lord and glorifies him,

w-pūrʿān ʿamlwhī en d-ṭāv w-en d-b-īshī lēh mettasrḥ.

and the reward of his works, whether good or evil, is paid to him;

et que le salaire de ses œuvres, bonnes ou mauvaises, lui est payé ;

mā da-l-b-īshē ʿam mārōdē b-shendē mṭabḥ:

when the wicked, with the rebels, are slaughtered in torments,

w-lā tūv mnapesh l-shēdē w-da-ywē w-āplā marwaḥ.

and there is no more escape for demons and devils, nor any relief:

ṭūbayk b-yāwmā d-rēyḥ ḥūdāth d-lā sāk pāaḥ:

blessed are you on the day when the scent of a joy without end breathes out,

w-ʿal shmayānē w-arʿānāyē gāaḥ w-mezdlaḥ.

and rises over heavenly and earthly beings, and shines.

men malālē kul d-sāēq lēh ṭāv methnaṣaḥ:

Of the speakers, all who rise to him truly triumph,

wa-d-lā peḥmā ʿal kul shāpaʿ w-kul lēh māaḥ.

and without measure he flows over all, and all are healed by him.

mā da-l-kēnē b-ṭūbē mlīkē mārkh mnīḥ:

When your Lord gives rest to the righteous in the promised blessings,

wa-l-pūth ʿamlāwhī wa-myatrtēh klnāsh mettnīḥ.

and everyone finds rest by the measure of his labours and his virtues,

ʿam ḥerḥā sānē ḥūbā w-rāḥēm ṭūḥṭāḥ:

Toward the heretics, haters of love, he was merciful and kind;

envers les hérétiques, ennemis de l’amour, il fut miséricordieux et bon ;

kmā d-metṭabav neṣḥān avūn hāw methdalaḥ.

however far our father's victory was spoken of, he was harassed.

methḥashav (h)wā lelaī ʾīmām kad mestāwaḥ:

They plotted night and day, agreeing together,

l-qeṭlēh d-kēnā w-ba-d-mūth nūr b-ṭūkhnā rātaḥ.

to kill the righteous man, and they seethed like fire in a furnace.

kmā dēyn zavnyn b-la-ylāwth l-qeṭlēh aqaḥ:

How many times by night they came to kill him,

wa-ba-d-staṭam men ṭaybūthā tākh (h)wā w-araḥ.

and, blocked by grace, they turned and went away.

b-ḥad dēyn lely kad hōn avūn la-shmayā paraḥ:

One night, when our father had flown up to heaven,

wa-b-ʿenyānēh d-ʿam alhā madaʿēh eṣṭmaḥ.

and in his converse with God his mind was fixed,

ba-d-ghōn hāw lēh lā yādaʿ (h)wā w-āplā meshkḥ:

therefore he did not know of it, nor was he aware of it,

bedthʿarpal (h)wā b-rūḥānūth w-vāh ezdayaḥ.

for he was wrapped in a cloud of the spirit, and shone in it.

ba-zban ṣaprā kad hwā gūhgāh w-hāwnēh ʿlāwhī gāḥ:

At morning, at first light, when his mind came back to him,

npaq men mʿartēh la-mṭayālū w-ʿal traʿ eshkḥ.

he came out of his cave to walk, and found at the door

kmāyūth ʿesr knesh ḥerḥā da-ʿlāwhī ṣpaḥīw:

about ten of the band of heretics, who were watching for him;

une dizaine de la troupe des hérétiques, qui l’épiaient ;

w-pāsh d-lā rgeshth ba-d-men ṭaybūtākh w-ethrayaḥ.

and he stayed unseen, by your grace, and breathed freely.

estakl bēh da-khnesh b-īshē da-ʿlāwhī eshtlaḥ:

He looked at the band of wicked men sent against him,

w-damaʿ wa-b-khā d-men ṭaybūth kmā ethraḥraḥ.

and shed tears and wept, so deeply was he moved with kindness.

la-mshamlāyū ṣevyān shēdē kmā estwaḥ:

How eager they were to carry out the will of demons,

w-men mshaḥyānū d-da-ywē ṭanpē kmā ettartḥ.

and how they were stirred by the corruption of the unclean devils!

avūn mbarkhā l-shepʿaī ḥūbēh ʿlayhōn aghīḥ:

Our blessed father made the floods of his love gush over them,

w-men asūrē d-pekhrt kenū sharā (h)wā w-anīḥ.

and from the bonds of wrong thinking he set them free and gave them rest.
