gvyth lī mārī d-eṭar shethqā: wa-l-hādh zavnā lā mapes.

I chose, my Lord, to keep silence, but this time does not allow it.

ʿerqēth la-l-mēn shalyūthā: w-da-ʾmedh bēh lā sāpēq nā.

I fled to the harbor of stillness, but to remain in it I am not able.

shāʿ ṣvyānī reʿyānī wa-ṭpā: traʿ shalyūthā l-bar menēh.

My will played with my mind and quenched it, and broke down the door of stillness, casting it forth.

w-aykh zeqtā tkastēh l-kenārī: ṣevʿā d-rūḥā w-leʿzat bēh.

And like a sting the finger of the Spirit pierced my harp, and spoke through it.

nepqēth rūḥā da-ṭle nā: w-ya(h)v lī ātā b-eramyā.

I went forth in spirit, young as I am, and he gave me a sign, as with Jeremiah.

amrēth d-ʾītaī hedyōṭā: wa-b-mūshē b-lāmā ʿbadh lī.

I said, I am unlearned, but, as with Moses, he made of me one slow of speech.

ʿerqath men kārōzūthā: w-aykh ywnān ṣādanī shethqēh.

I fled from preaching, and like Jonah, silence caught me.

w-ahmīth tūv aykh maīnā: w-īqedh lēh bī pethghāmēh.

And again I grew idle, like a sluggard, but his word burned within me.

hā b-ḥaylākh methkatash nā: hwī men yamīnī wa-smōkaynī.

Behold, in your strength I struggle; be at my right hand, and support me.

ʿlaykh ēmar a(n)t emar bī: w-rakev b-reʿyānī tashʿītākh.

Concerning you would I speak; speak then through me, and set your story within my mind.

lā (h)wā dēyn aykh bāṣōyā: elā mārī aykh sāghōdā.

Not, then, as one who examines, but, my Lord, as one who worships.

hav lī zaynākh ezke bēh: l-men d-ṭālam paghrānūtākh.

Give me your weapon, that with it I may conquer him who denies your taking of a body.

kōp lī qelʿā d-pethghāmaīk: nsīm kēpā d-haymānūtā.

Bend for me the sling of your words, that it may set therein the stone of faith.

tepōq b-ʾīdā d-ḥalāshūtī: w-arme l-ghūlyādh ṭālōmākh.

Let it go out by the hand of my weakness, and strike down the Goliath who denies you.

ʾō da-qne (h)wā klmedem: b-mūshḥātēh wa-b-tarbītēh.

O one who possessed everything, in its measures and its increase,

lā tbaṣar mēmarī da-ʿlaykh: d-lā b-ṣīr bī shrārākh galyā.

let not my discourse about you fall short, for your truth revealed in me is not lessened.

kyānākh mederan ethkasī: zīwākh ṭīnan eth ʿaṭap.

Your nature was covered by our dust; your splendor was wrapped in our clay.

alāhūtākh ba-khyānan: wa-khyānan b-alāhūthākh.

Your Godhead is in our nature, and our nature is in your Godhead.

layt mūzāghā w-b-w-l-bālā: w-lā shūghnāyā w-shūḥlāpā.

There is no mixture and no confusion, no alteration and no change.

Il n'y a ni mélange ni confusion, ni altération ni changement.

lā āwbdākh ʿal d-eshkaḥtānī: lā tāwbedaynī d-eshkaḥtākh.

Let me not lose you, because you found me; do not lose me, because I found you.

kyānākh qāwī aykh d-ʾītāwhī: wa-khynī tūv aykh da-b-raytāyhī.

Your nature remained as it was; my nature too, as you created it.

da-shqaltānī lā eshtaḥlaft: w-da-hwēyth d-īlākh lā ebadhth.

In taking me up you were not changed; in becoming yours I was not lost.

En me prenant, tu n'as pas changé ; en devenant tien, je ne me suis pas perdu.

da-ʿmart bī lā eshtaghnīt: w-dēethʿaṭaptānī lā phēyth bākh.

In dwelling in me you were not altered; and when you put me on, I did not vanish into you.

En habitant en moi, tu n'as pas été altéré ; et lorsque tu m'as revêtu, je ne me suis pas dissous en toi.

lā (h)wā kyānākh eshtaḥlap: wa-hwā paghrā d-lā enā.

Your nature was not changed, and it did not become a body that was not mine.

w-lā kyānī d-lā alāhūtākh: eshtwī d-nehwe alāhā.

nor was my nature, apart from your Godhead, made fit to become God.

a(n)t hāw b-raḥmayk ethʿaṭapt: l-nāshā d-nehwe akhwāthākh.

You it is who, in your mercy, put on man, that he might become like you.

a(n)t hāw l-beshtāyhī aykh naḥtā: lā (h)wā d-meshtlaḥ wa-d-vālē

You it is who put him on like a garment, not one to be stripped off and to wear out.

lā mzīgh kyānākh ba-d-yānan: w-lā ḥvīkh kyānan ba-khyānākh.

Your nature is not mixed with our nature, nor is our nature blended with your nature.

nṭīrā (h)ī bākh mārī shalmūtan: w-sharyā b-paghran ʾīthūtākh.

In you, my Lord, our wholeness is preserved; and in our flesh your being dwells.

bākh rēshītan salīqā: d-lan mārūtākh naḥīthā (h)ī.

In you our first-fruits have ascended, for to us your lordship has come down.

lā (h)wā b-sedhqā w-pūrshānā: w-āplā tūv ba-plīghūtā.

It was not by rupture and separation, nor again by division.

lā (h)wā ba-thrēyn parṣōpīn: w-lā ba-thrēyn b-nīn māwdēyn (ḥ)nan.

It was not in two persons, nor do we confess two sons.

lā ṣābēynan aykh sharkā: b-shedhyā nqīm haymānūtan.

We do not wish, like the rest, to set up our faith carelessly.

hālēyn gēyr da-b-mūzāgā: mwdēyn bēh wa-b-shūḥlāpā.

For these who confess him in mixture and in change,

psīq hāw savrhōn l-tartayhēyn: l-alāhūtēh w-nāshūtēh.

their hope is cut off from both, his Godhead and his manhood.

d-mā d-aʿelūn b-w-l-bālā: wa-ṭlamīw tartēyn men pāsh.

For when they bring in confusion and deny both, what is left?

neshtalḥūn men tartayhēyn: da-mshalḥīn lēh men tartēyn.

Let them be stripped of both, who strip him of both.

b-aynā kaī menhēyn māwdēyn: d-āwbedh enēyn tartayhēyn.

In which of the two, then, do they confess him who destroyed them both?

b-alāhūtēh kad mwdēyn: en eshtaḥlpat lāw (h)ī (h)ī.

When they confess his Godhead, if it was changed, it is no longer itself.

b-nāshūtēh ṣābēyn d-nāwdōn: hā la-ytēyh en hākan (h)ī.

They wish to confess his manhood; behold, it is not there, if this is so.

l-(h)ī d-lā shālmīn w-(h)ī shārēyn: w-(h)ī da-hwā besrā l-b-īkhīn.

What they do not accept, that they dissolve, but that which "became flesh" they hold fast.

enhw melthā hwā besrā: besrā hāw mādēyn w-lāw melthā.

If the Word became flesh, then it is flesh, and not the Word.

en mehwā hwā medemedem: l-medem nāḥēth ba-b-rīthā.

If, in becoming, it became any given thing, it comes down into something within creation.

hwā lēh mādēyn shūrāyā: w-ebadh melthā w-pāsh besrā.

It has, then, a beginning, and the Word perished, and flesh remained.

en melthā hāw hwā besrā: ethblaʿ lēh meltā b-besrā.

If it was the Word that became flesh, the Word was swallowed up in flesh.

w-aykh la-ytāwhī men hāsh melthā: elā besrā ba-l-ḥōdāwhī.

And so from then there is no longer the Word, but flesh alone.

hā ʿbadtāyhī b-rīthā mādēyn: l-hāw da-b-rākh w-a(n)t ṣaʿartāyhī.

Behold, then, you have made him a creature, him who created you, and you have insulted him.

Voici donc que tu as fait de lui une créature, lui qui t'a créé, et tu l'as outragé.

ṭāv hāw menākh āryānā: w-qadīm hāw lākh marqīōn.

Arius is better than you, and Marcion goes before you.

plagh hāw lēh ārīōs: ʾīqārā ṭāv men d-īlākh.

Arius allotted him honor greater than yours.

w-marqīōn tūv mīqar lēh: yatīr menākh ḥalāshā.

And Marcion, too, honors him more than you, weak one.

ārīōs gēyr māwdē bēh: d-bārōyā d-kul ʾīthāwhī (h)wā.

For Arius confesses of him that he was the Creator of all,

w-lā mshaḥlep lēh akhwātakh: w-mekā l-hārkā nāgēdh lēh.

and does not change him as you do, and from beginning to end holds him consistent.

w-marqyōn tūv ṭāvā sāmēh: w-lā mtaḥte lēh akhwāthākh.

And Marcion, too, set him down as good, and does not abase him as you do.

"The Word became flesh" you read, but "he dwelt among us" is too hard for you.

emrēth aylēyn d-qadīmn: d-lā nethbaṣran men avā.

I have told which things are eternal, so they might not be reckoned less than the Father.

emrēth d-āplā ḥdā ṣvūtā: qnāt tūqānā belʿādāwhī.

I have said that not a single thing in creation came to be without him.

meṭul mdēyn d-eshtaḥlap: b-besrā qāwī aykh da-hwā.

Since, then, he was changed, in flesh he remained as he had become.

en hāw hpakh napshēh wa-hwā: (h)ī d-shap menāh evdath lāh.

If he turned himself and became flesh, then that which excelled it has been lost to it.

lā hwā mādēyn alāhā: elā nāshā ḥatīthā.

He was not, then, God, but mere man.

w-aykā enēyn mʿalyāthā: d-ba-d-yāthqāwhī akhtev lan.

And where, then, are the exalted things that he wrote for us in his testaments?

en shūḥlāpā hwā tamān: abīdh ḥadh men tamān.

If there was change there, one of the two is lost from it.

S'il y eut là un changement, l'un des deux s'y est perdu.

en gēyr tēmar d-alāhā hāw: marsān lākh nāshyātēh.

For if you say he is God, his human traits will confound you.

w-enhw d-tēmar d-ba-rnāshā hāw: zākayān lākh d-alāhūtēh.

And if you say he is man, the things of his Godhead will convict you.

b-aynā shqāqā nāpq a(n)t: ʾō mdāwadh bēyth ʾūrḥātā.

By which lane will you go out, O one bewildered among the roads?

aynā men gabē gābēyt: ʾw d-lā yādaʿ ʿūdrānēh.

Which side will you choose, O one who does not know his own advantage?

en da-hwā besrā l-b-īkh a(n)t: zā(q)tā lākh alāhūtēh.

If you hold fast to "he became flesh," his Godhead stings you.

w-en tēmar lī d-alāhā hāw: bālmā lākh āp nāshūtēh.

And if you say to me he is God, his manhood, too, will muzzle you.

how then did John write that no man has ever seen God?

w-nūhrā b-ḥeshōkhā anhar: w-ḥeshōkhā lēh lā adhrekh.

And the light shone in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

lāw klnāsh mestakal bāh: b-hādē d-emar yōḥanān.

Not everyone understands this saying of John.

nūhrā b-paghrā ḥeshōkhā: w-lā ethḥapī ba-ḥṭīthā.

Light was in a body of darkness, and was not covered by sin.

ḥṭāhē lam aykh ḥeshōkē: l-kul paghrīn rdafw āp shapelīw.

Sins, they say, like darkness, pursued and subdued every body.

w-meṭul nūhrā d-manhar (h)wā: b-ghāw hāw paghrā ḥeshōkhā.

and because the light was shining within that body of darkness,

rdaf (h)wā bāthrēh ḥeshōkhā: w-lā ethmṣī l-madhrākhūtēh.

darkness pursued after it, and was not able to overtake it.

yōḥanān shedh ʿal nūhrā: da-nhaymen b-ʾīdēh klnāsh.

John testified concerning the light, that through him everyone might believe.

en nūhrā ba-l-ḥōdāwhī (h)wā: taḥpīthā l-men ʾīth (h)wā lēh.

If the light was alone, for whom did it have a covering?

l-men lā ethḥzī aykh d-ʾīthāwhī: d-hā b-tartēyn methmashaḥ (h)wā.

Why was it not seen as it truly is, for behold, it was measured under two natures?

w-en ḥadh hāw w-thūv eshtaḥlap: tartēyn bēh l-mā shkhīḥān (h)waī.

And if he was one, and was changed again, how could two be found in him?

For I do not know which of the two you deny to him:

Upon which of the two, then, did he tread, he, the contemptible one, who said this of him?

d-hā tartayhēyn ḥāzēynan: d-ʾīth hāw l-wātēh qrīḥāīth.

For behold, we see both clearly present in him.

d-rāshā hāw hapkāyā hānā: da-shīrā qnōmēh b-leshānēh.

Or is it not enough for the discerning man to condemn him by what Paul said:

wī gēyr (h)ī d-sābar d-yādaʿ: taksēh d-medem lā yādaʿ.

For woe to him who supposes he knows; rebuke him, for he knows nothing.

elā mānā d-āmar lan: d-melthā lam hāw hwā besrā.

But what does he say to us? That "the Word," they say, "became flesh."

d-ba-ʾḥūhōn lā ṣvāw nāwdōn: aykh nūkhrāyē methḥashbīn.

since they were unwilling to confess their brother, they are reckoned as strangers.

d-men sīmath ḥayē henōn: glazw napshhōn men mwdē b-hōn.

for they themselves cut off their souls from the treasury of life, from him who confesses them,

da-snāw henōn qnōmayhōn: qnōm d-īlhōn lā ḥāzēyn lēh.

They hate their own selves; they do not recognize their own person in him,

hāw d-ethkasī hadāmyn: da-b-raḥmē nḥūr w-neḥe bēh.

He who was clothed in our members — let us gaze on him with mercy, and live through him,

da-hwayn aḥē l-nāshūtēh: wa-b-nayā l-alāhūtēh.

that we became brothers to his humanity, and children to his divinity.

hwā aḥūn meṭul paghran: w-avūn meṭul shūlṭānēh.

He became our brother because of our body, and our father because of his power,

d-la-b-shanī gēyr meṭul raḥmāwhī: lā neṭlōm ḥnan la-ḥnānēh.

for since he clothed himself because of his mercies, let us not deny him our compassion.

nēmar lēh b-rīkh hāw kyānākh: da-gvā kyānan wa-ʿmar bēh.

Let us say to him: Blessed is your nature, that chose our nature and dwelt in it,

b-rīkh gazākh d-āp gēzavrā: ʿabadh lēh paghran la-nyāḥākh.

Blessed is your treasure, that even the treasurer made our body a resting place for you,

b-rīkh hāw shmākh da-l-besh la-shman: wa-shman ba-shmākh etdalī.

Blessed is your name, that clothed itself with our name, and our name was exalted in your name,

b-rīkh ʿūthrākh da-nḥeth wa-shrā: b-meskēnūtan w-aʿtar lan.

Blessed is your wealth, that came down and dwelt in our poverty, and enriched us,

b-rīkh da-hwā gnōnēh paghran: w-la-ghnōnēh qrā b-naī ṭōhmēh.

Blessed is he whose bridal chamber our body became, and to that chamber he called the children of his kin,

b-rīkh hāw d-lā ḥsakh māwhavtēh: men paghrē ṣrīkē d-gensan.

Blessed is he who did not withhold his gift from the needy bodies of our race,

nāwdē lēh l-avā d-shalḥēh: wa-l-rūḥ qūdhshā tlītāīth.

Let us give thanks to the Father who sent him, and to the Holy Spirit, in trinity,

d-ṣārēth ṣalmākh ba-khthīvāthī: ṣūr a(n)t shūvḥākh ʿal nūḥāmī.

You painted your image in my writings; paint your glory upon my resurrection,

wa-d-haymnēth bākh wa-b-paghrākh: eḥzēykh bēh m d-naḥemtānī.

and since I have believed in you and in your body, let me see you in it when you raise me,

One God who took flesh I proclaim to the blessed assembly,

One God who took flesh was born of the daughter of man,

One God who took flesh walked the earth thirty years,

l-ḥadh alāhā da-mgasham: l-bakhw y(h)ūdāyē qāṭōlē.

The murderous Jews ensnared the one God who took flesh,

l-ḥad alāhā da-mgasham: ṣlav ʿamā ʿal gāghūltā.

The one God who took flesh — the people crucified on Golgotha.
