reḥmath yūlpānā.

The love of learning.

L'amour du savoir.

yūlpānā melḥā hāw d-napshā: d-bēh methḥayṣā da-pyūtāh.

Learning is the salt of the soul, by which its blandness is checked,

ṭaʿmā ḥlīmā da-mmadhkh: l-ma(d)ʿā d-khlyōm hārēgh bēh.

a healthy taste that refreshes the mind, on which it meditates every day.

shrāghā d-hāwnā yūlpānā hāw: d-bēh methnahrā yadaʿtā.

Learning is the lamp of the mind, by which knowledge is made bright,

la-mpēydā d-ʿāal madhleq: b-ʿūbē ḥlīlē d-tarʿīthā.

it kindles a torch that enters into the hidden recesses of the mind.

shemshā hāw d-dānaḥ men edhnā: b-gāw reʿyānā w-manhar lēh.

It is a sun that rises from the ear, within the mind, and gives it light,

shārē lāh l-lā īdaʿthā: ba-d-mūth ḥūmā la-ghlīdhā.

it dissolves ignorance, as heat dissolves ice.

napshā d-napshā yūlpānā hāw: d-menēh qānyā ḥayūtā.

Learning is the soul of the soul, from which it gains its life,

w-kul napshā d-lā mlīḥā bēh: shladā (h)ī mītātā w-maslaytā.

and every soul not salted by it is a corpse, dead and despised.

bēh gēyr ḥāzyā l-alāhā: d-hwyū ḥayē da-b-rītā.

For by it the soul sees God, who is the life of creation,

w-menēh nāhrā d-tethbayan: b-hāw ʿāvōdā da-khyānē.

and from it comes the light by which it may know that Maker of natures.

men yūlpānā meshkaḥ a(n)t: ʾūrḥā d-ḥayē d-terdē bāh.

From learning you can find the way of life, that you may walk in it,

hāw nāgēdh lāh l-īdaʿthā: ṣydh qūshtā b-nahīrūtēh.

for it draws knowledge toward the truth by its brightness.

ʾīlānā hāw d-khlyōm methqṭep: w-khlyōm sāgyān ʿallātēh.

It is a tree that is plucked every day, and every day its fruits multiply,

lā methgardē men pērē: kmā d-nevʿe nāsh meshkaḥ bēh.

it is never stripped of fruit; however much one seeks, one finds in it.

layt lēh sathwā l-yūlpānā: da-ngazēywhī men ebābānē.

Learning has no winter, to strip it of its budding shoots,

w-āplā glīdā mʿāwekh lēh: men da-l-metal ʿallāthā.

nor does frost hinder it from giving forth its fruits.

āp b-zavnā wa-d-lā zavnā: l-malpānūtā mapes hāw.

In season and out of season it is bold for teaching,

w-lā ʾīth yāwmā d-lā shalīṭ: d-nethmalal bēh yūlpānā.

and there is no day on which learning may not be spoken.

ba-ṭīlē dēyn da-l-qūvlā: d-hālēyn melē ʾītayhōn.

But the idle are those who stand against these words,

w-lā qāṭpīn men yūlpānā: ebā mbasem tarʿīthā.

and do not pluck from learning the fruit that delights the mind.

maīnūtā ʿrāt enōn: w-hā mzaṭmīn malpānūtā.

Sloth has stripped them bare, and behold, they mock teaching,

w-beṭlānā ḥabīv l-hōn: ba-d-ghōn sānēyn qeryānā.

and idleness is dear to them, so they hate reading.

l-aynā d-rāḥam qeryānā: mḥasdīn lēh d-mevṣā hāw bāṣ.

The one who loves reading they revile, as one who pries too closely,

wa-d-lā nelōn ba-khthābē: mestatrīn ba-pshīṭūtā.

and so as not to labor over books, they hide behind simplicity.

hāwē āmrīn maīnē: d-lā dārshīnan l-alāhā.

The slothful keep saying, "We do not dispute about God."

l-ḥāz dāmēyn d-āmar (h)wā: d-la-ʾlāhī lam lā enase.

They resemble Ahaz, who said, "I will not put my God to the test."

b-reʿyānā plīghā āḥāz: lā shel ātā l-alāhā.

With a divided mind Ahaz did not ask a sign of God,

w-ba-ʿyādē d-maīnūthā: shāyṭīn saklē yūlpānā.

and by habits of sloth the foolish despise learning.

l-aynā d-hādas ba-khthābē: qrāūhī saklē dārōshā.

The one who takes delight in books, the foolish call a disputer,

wa-d-ḥabīv lēh qeryānā: mānēyn lēh aykh bāṣōyā.

and the one to whom reading is dear, they reckon a prying searcher.

sīmāthā b-seprē ṭmīrān: w-manīū da-b-hōn lā neḥpōr.

Treasures lie hidden in books, and who will not dig for them?

gazē ḥmīlīn ba-khtābē: wa-d-lāē b-hōn ʿātar lēh.

Treasures are stored up in books, and whoever labors over them grows rich.

ḥbenānē dēyn lāw ba-l-ḥōdh: melā b-seprē lā lāēyn.

But the lazy, not only do they not labor over the words in books,

elā āp ʿādhlīn l-aynā: d-maḥṣp yālap ītīrā.

they even blame the one who diligently learns the more.

b-meltēh d-īshōʿ nethbasrūn: d-shīṭā l-hōn malpānūtēh.

By the word of Jesus let them be put to shame, since teaching is despised by them,

d-hāw ḥasedh (h)wā l-y(h)ūdāyē: d-sakhlīn (h)wāw shūālayhōn.

for he rebuked the Jews, whose questions were foolish.

lā lam ktābē yādhʿītōn: w-āplā ḥaylēh d-alāhā.

"You know neither the Scriptures," he said, "nor the power of God."

mekayl men hārkā nēlap: d-ḥēyl alāhā ba-khthābē hāw.

From this, henceforth, let us learn that the power of God is in the Scriptures.

shelūhī gēyr zadwqāyē: ʿal a(n)tthā d-shavʿā gavryh.

For the Sadducees asked him about the woman with seven husbands,

d-mā da-hwā lam nūḥāmā: l-wāth aynā menhōn teshrakh.

"When the resurrection comes, to which of them will she belong?"

w-kad shamʿēh (h)wā l-shūālā: d-lāw radhyāīth ethmalal.

And when he heard the question, that it was not fittingly put,

asgī b-sar (h)wā l-ba-ṭīlē: d-ba-khthābē lā mdhāqīn (h)wāw.

he sharply rebuked the idle, who did not search the Scriptures closely,

lā lam ktābē yādhʿīn ʾ(n)tōn: w-āp lā ḥaylēh d-alāhā.

"You do not know the Scriptures," he said, "nor even the power of God."

hārkā galyāīth ḥapeṭ: ʿal qeryānā da-khtābē.

Here he openly urged them to the reading of the Scriptures.

mekēyl aynā d-lā qārē: da-l-qūvlā d-hādē ʾītāwhī.

Henceforth, whoever does not read stands opposed to this,
