ṭūbayk avūn da-ptakhrōnhōn bākh ethrgamgam:

Blessed are you, our father, for by you their idols were stoned,

w-āp maʿbdayhōn da-b-shēm qenṭrōp bk ethhgamgam.

And even their temples, in the name of Qentrop, were thrown into confusion by you.

ṭūbaykh avūn d-qeṣ ḥerḥā bākh ethgāramram:

Blessed are you, our father, for by you the end of the quarrelsome was cut off and crushed,

w-ʾp ʾōnōmhōn bāk ethraʿraʿ w-vāk ethgdamdam.

And even their name was shattered by you, and by you broken to pieces.

ṭūbaykh d-mārk b-madʿākh ettṣīr w-āp eṣṭlamlam:

Blessed are you, for your Lord was formed in your mind, and was also imaged there,

w-la-shmayānyān ethhaggh lēh w-āp eth(ḥ)lamlam.

And among the heavenly ones he was told of, and was also made strong.

ṭūbaykh d-sānāk b-da-rāwhī d-ʿamākh kad etdaram:

Blessed are you, for your enemy, in the generations of your people, when he was struck down,

qarnēh w-shūvḥēh ethgadamw l-hōn w-āp ethadam.

His horn and his glory were cut off from them, and he was also torn limb from limb.

Gate of Nun

Porte de Noun

hāydēyn avūn l-avūn grīʿē napshēh zayn:

Then our father armed himself against the father of the shaven,

w-ṣlī d-īshōʿ gūmraī nūr ʿlayhōn nḥaben.

And prayed that Jesus would kindle coals of fire upon them.

la-mbaṭālū ṭūʿyaī d-b-īshthōn ṣhe (h)wā wa-khpen:

To undo the errors of their wickedness, he thirsted and hungered,

w-la-mpāwshāshū da-rqūnūthhōn shqal ṭaʿnā ṭʿen.

And to calm their dragon rage, he took up a load and bore it.

yādaʿ (h)wā l-hōn l-harṭīqē kmā zēpānīn:

He knew how arrogant the heretics were,

Il savait combien les hérétiques étaient orgueilleux,

wa-mlēyn shūqrā w-ʿāūl w-ʿet w-āp esṭāsīn.

And full of lies, and wrong, and malice, and even of sedition.

ʿghīm (h)wā b-lebēh zēp ṭūʿnayhōn hāw d-bēh maʿlēyn:

He was grieved in his heart at the arrogance of their claims, which they bring in,

w-gāʿēṣ (h)wā lāh l-pazīzūthhōn (h)ī d-vāh mrāwzēyn.

And he loathed their rashness, in which they exult.

mpās (h)wā shapīr da-b-madbḥayhōn ptakhrē mṭashēyn:

He was well convinced that in their altars they hide idols,

wa-l-hōn mdabḥīn zaptrē zaprē wa-b-hōn mshaʿleyn.

And to them they sacrifice foul offerings, and with them they make sport.

rghīsh (h)wā sagī ba-qhālayhōn w-tarāwhī mparsēyn:

He was well aware of their assemblies, and the doors they open wide,

w-sūnhādōshōn mdamdmath ba-d-mēh d-vh ʿlāwhī maqrēyn.

And that their synod is spattered with his blood, by which they read out against him.

kad d-yn shalem ṣlōtēh shmīʿt (h)ī d-vh ethghen:

But when he finished his prayer, which was heard, in which he bowed down,

ya(h)vw lēh shālmā ʿīraī rāwmā wa-b-hōn etdhen.

The watchers of the height gave him peace, and he was anointed by them.

ken prash menhōn ḥad rūḥānā wa-l-wātēh rken:

Then one spiritual being parted from them, and bowed toward him:

shlām lākh rabn shlām l-nakhpūtākh emar w-qanqen.

"Peace to you, Rabban; peace to your purity," he said, and chanted.

meḥdā gepāwhī naqash la-ḥdādē wa-praḥ wa-shken:

At once it struck its wings together, and flew, and alighted,

w-la-ʾvūn b-ʿūzā d-rūḥā ba-pthōq mataī aben.

And to our father, by the strength of the Spirit, he came in an embrace.

hāydēyn sharī mpīs wa-mṣale w-shīrath mshaʿen:

Then he began to persuade, and to pray, and to take up the song of praise,

d-dam nhe pūrsā d-men ṭāʿyūthhōn nehwōn methpnēyn.

In case there might be a way for them to turn from their error.

ʾīṭā ettgīv men rūḥān d-lā lam tāyābīn:

Then he was answered by the spiritual being: they will not repent at all,

w-men masṭyūthhōn d-vātar da-ywē lā methhapkīn.

And from their straying after demons they do not turn back.

lā ṣābēnā b-mōth ḥaṭyē elā d-mettwēyn:

He does not desire the death of sinners, but that they repent;

Il ne désire pas la mort des pécheurs, mais qu'ils se repentent ;

wa-l-wāth hālēyn layt twāy w-lēh lā metdnēyn.

With these there is no repentance, and they do not submit to him.

Chez ceux-là il n'y a pas de repentir, et ils ne se soumettent pas à lui.

men qeṣ d-īlepw l-meʿbd b-īsht w-vh mettarsēyn:

Long ago they learned to do evil, and they are brought up in it.

prāthōzmīhōn shelmat d-la-shyōl nhōn mettaḥtēyn.

Their appointed time is complete, that they be brought down to Sheol.

mendresh ṣalī d-men ḥsām da-ywē lā lam nethḥsen:

Pray again, that he may not be overpowered by the envy of the demons,

wa-b-shūbāl shmyānāy nhe methʿshen.

And may he be enriched with the heavenly ear of grain.

w-men d-ūkh l-d-ūkh yablēh ʿdamā l-belōqtīqīn.

And led him from place to place as far as the library.

mnaqe (h)wā lēh l-shēd maṭʿyaī mle ṭūnāpyn.

He used to pour libations to the demon of error, full of defilements.

ʾp hāw da-ywā mnaṣaḥ (h)wā lēh b-sōgāth zavnīn:

That demon too had made him famous many times,

l-ʿēyn da-ynē wa-qdām malkē wa-shrekh nāshīn.

Before the eyes of judges, and before kings, and the rest of the people.

myadaʿ (h)wā ʿlāwhī d-sāʿar ḥaylē hāw alāhāēyn:

He made it known about him that he works divine powers,

w-mapeq (h)wā ʿlāwhī qdhām sagyēē d-ghālē hāw rzīn.

And spread it about him before many that he reveals mysteries.

athīv da-ywā l-aghnāṭīōs mle ṭūmāīn:

The demon spoke to Ignatius, who was full of impurities:

Le démon répondit à Ignace, plein d'impuretés :

ʾō rāḥemī w-ḥavrī mānāw da-hwākh d-hwyet maīn.

"O my friend and my companion, what has come over you, that you have become like this?

ṭabīʿ lebākh b-tarmōṭūth aykh ḥbenānīn:

Your heart is sunk in heedlessness, like the careless,

w-lā yādaʿ ʾ(n)t men hwā b-da-yrākh b-hālēyn yāwmīn.

And you do not know what has happened in your monastery in these days.

aghīv aghnāṭ l-rabēh da-ywā kad lēh mbagen:

Ignatius answered his master the demon, while he flattered him:

d-lā yādaʿ ʾnā l-mōn d-ʾmr (n)t ʾō rēsh shakhnīn.

"I do not know what you mean, O chief of the dwellers.

ḥdā yādaʿ ʾnā d-aykh mʿādhūtākh d-men sharūthīn:

One thing I know: that, against your custom from the beginning,

lā ḥzēyth ḥaylākh b-hānā ʿūmr men rōm yāwmīn.

I have not seen your power in this monastery for many days.

ṭerāṭūyābī w-qūlt d-meshḥā spaq w-lā pāsh b-hēyn:

My jars and my flask of oil were used up, and none is left in them,

w-mānaī ḥamr shrebū men bālī d-layt b-hōn ḥamrnayn.

And my vessels of wine were drunk without my knowing, so that there is no wine in them.

Et mes vases de vin ont été vidés à mon insu, si bien qu'il n'y a plus de vin.

gavrē w-neshē ethpseqw menan w-lā d-yn sālqīn:

Men and women have been cut off from us, and they do not come up,

w-bēyth gazā spīq w-āp aḥūsē lā methpaṣḥīn.

And the treasury is spent, and even the attendants are not glad.

ḥūb qelōrn d-rātaḥ (h)wā ṭāv b-kul ākhōlyn:

Our loaf, which used to be hot, and good for all who ate,

hā qar w-nashīsh w-sagī ṭʿaytān w-menk estlīn.

See, it has grown cold and stale, and we have strayed greatly, and are taken away from you.

māna (h)ī d-askeln āw d-vāk ahmīn b-ḥad dēyn men znīn:

What is it that has made us foolish, or that we have neglected you in any one way?

hā besmānē qdhāmayk sīmīn b-kul ʿedānyn.

Behold, spices are laid before you at all times.
